A harbinger of things to come? The Cardinals hope their season-opener win is just that. Why Paul Calvisi is considering meatless meatballs is anyone's guess, but he soon righted the ship with Darren Urban and Dani Sureck to chat about finishing the victory in the Big Easy, the Saints going up tempo but the Cards still playing solid defense, the Rabbit defense and all the dime looks, Will Johnson's fabulous debut, how the run game will impact the Panthers game on both sides of the ball (like last December), a new Wise Guy (Paul may have a chance …), the Kyler-to-MHJ connection trending up, Trey Benson getting caught from behind, what Bryce Young is doing, Dani gets the guys Cultured, and a look around the NFC West.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It wasn't always easy in "The Big Easy", but the Arizona Cardinals went into a hostile environment and won a close game on the road against the New Orleans Saints 20-13 to start the season 1-0. What stood out the most on both sides of the ball? Craig Grialou, Paul Calvisi and former Cardinals linebacker Rob Fredrickson break down what they saw on Sunday. Budda Baker and Jalen Thompson combined for the game-saving pass break up, Kyler Murray and Marvin Harrison Jr.'s connection was on display, how the newly assembled defensive front performed and rookie cornerback Will Johnson's outstanding regular season debut.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ep. 921 - A win is a win no matter how it looks, right? At least it does in Week 1, and it most certainly does in Week 1 on the road. The Cardinals survived their trip to New Orleans, beating the Saints, 20-13. Sure, there's a lot to correct. But isn't it better to get those mistakes cleaned up after a win rather than a loss? Of course it is. Craig Grialou and Paul Calvisi look back at Sunday's victory. The guys start with the defense because it was the defense that finished the game. They then turn their attention to Will Johnson, who impressed in his debut - he earned Paul's weekly Angry Bird Award (yes, it's back!); the Kyler Murray-Marvin Harrison Jr. connection looks improved from last season; and Trey Benson showed speed and decisiveness to begin Year 2. It's a Victory Monday, Bird Gang!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Earlier this summer Tom Llamas took over the reigns as the anchor and managing editor of NBC's Nightly News. A graduate of Loyola University New Orleans, and married to a local New Orleanian, the Big Easy has been like a second home for the journalist. I recently interviewed him for our sister publication New Orleans Magazine and recorded the conversation that spanned career, new beginnings and what New Orleans and Louisiana means to him.

Dozens of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention former and current employees demonstrated this week in support of the agency's top leadership, several of whom resigned following the firing of CDC director Susan Monarez. Plus, we have more from Georgia lawmakers about the mobilization of the National Guard in an effort to assist at Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in the state. And the Atlanta City Council is caught in the middle of a fight over what to do about the deterioration of the Fulton County Jail, where some people held there are again sleeping on the floor. We'll also look at how those who fled Hurricane Katrina 20 years ago have made an impact in Atlanta. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Follow along with slideshow visuals HERE. ENCORE ALERT! The Feminist Buzzkills are out on a summer break! But, no need to fear – we're leaving y'all with some extra brain juice to keep you company while we're offline. We're dropping an ENCORE POD EPISODE of when we collabed with the iconic “Boom! Lawyered” hosts Imani Gandy and Jess Pieklo IN DC and broke down SCOTUS' Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic arguments back in April. It went a little something like this… ATTENTION BUZZKILLAHSSSSS! WE DID A LIVE THING – in DC! Yep. Your “Feminist Buzzkills” joined forces with the “Boom! Lawyered” pod for an epic live show! After getting word that SCOTUS was hearing a case that could result in eliminating any healthcare provider from Medicaid payments if they provide abortion, we geared up for battle for one super-sized show with the amazing “Boom! Lawyered” hosts Imani Gandy (Rewire Editor-at-Large) and Jess Pieklo (Rewire Senior Vice President, Executive Editor.) We break down what this case means, and fill you in on all the outrageous tricks clown lawmakers across the country are playing trying to destroy access to reproductive care. It was a packed show full of rage and shenanigans and the DC crowd LOVED IT! This episode unpacks the arguments in Medina v Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, a case that could upend Medicaid beneficiaries ability to enforce their rights under the public benefit program all because conservatives hate abortion. We get into the history of efforts to kick Planned Parenthood out of the Medicaid program, the bad faith arguments made by conservatives to the Court as they try to do so again, and how a bad decision in the case could impact way more than access to abortion. Recorded LIVE at the Black Cat in DC, we gotta give a huge shout out and special thanks to the Black Cat crew for making the space for our loud asses AND for everyone who showed up! Tune in for the legal brilliance, the laughs, the knowledge, and some actions you can take to be the change you wanna see in this world. Times are heavy, but knowledge is power, y'all. We gotchu. On the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, from his home in the Garden District of New Orleans, Holbæk-born Danish tenor saxophonist and composer CHRISTIAN WINTHER recalls moving to "The Big Easy" in 1997 to play with and learn from some of his jazz idols. Staying true to the birthplace of American jazz and also continually innovating, Christian talks about performing on the stages of the iconic Preservation Hall and Snug Harbor, recording in New York, and traveling the world to play.Christian selects a work by P.S. Next to the St. Louis Cathedral and the Crescent City Connection, the Superdome is a visual icon of the city, completing the well-known skyline of the Big Easy. Through the ups and downs of football to playing host to the likes of The Rolling Stones and Muhammed Ali, The Superdome has seen the city through many phases since its opening. One, most notable, was the domed building's role in Hurricane Katrina. As the home of the New Orleans Saints celebrates its 50th anniversary and we look back on 20 years since Katrina, this episode we're taking a journey from the beginning with Evan Holmes. Holmes is the General Manager of the now-named Caesars Superdome, as well as the Smoothie King Center and ASM New Orleans.
Arrington sits down with New Orleans Councilman Oliver Thomas. He is one of many candidates running to be the next Mayor of "The Big Easy". He previously served on the city council from 1994 to 2007, first representing District B for two terms, then At large in 2002 until 2007. On December 11, 2021, Thomas again won election to the city council this time representing District E.
Frequent floods blight the poorest neighbourhoods of New Orleans but the residents are fighting back, one yard at a time. Physicist Helen Czerski joins the team behind the Front Yard Initiative as they strive to keep the Big Easy safe and dry, 20 years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. When Katrina hit New Orleans in August 2005, the levees broke, 800,000 residents were forced out and 1800 people died. $14bn was spent on concrete and steel to rebuild the defences but the city still floods regularly. This water isn't coming from the Mississippi River sealed behind the new defences, it's coming from the skies. Sudden, violent rainstorms are becoming more frequent and the city's low income districts have notoriously inefficient drainage systems. The water lands on concrete and asphalt and quickly overwhelms the drains. The team behind the Front Yard Initiative is working, block by block, to help residents beat the floods by turning broken concrete into rainwater gardens. Native flowers and cheap, simple engineering are helping to transform neighbourhoods and attract new residents to the battered but beautiful home of jazz, gumbo and Mardi Gras.Image: An example of a front yard made into a rainwater garden, pictured with the owner and team behind front yard initiative. We're dropping a very fun MINI SPECIAL POD EPISODE that we taped earlier this summer with the geniuses (and SISTERS!) behind “The Turnaway Play,” Diana Greene Foster and Lesley Greene! “What is the Turnaway Play?” you ask. It's a whole ass play based on Diana Greene Foster's “Turnaway Study!” The award-winning research paper is a comprehensive look at the harms caused by folks being denied abortion care, and it is INCREDIBLE. We stan this study soooo much that we dedicated a whole ass podcast episode to it last year and now we're bringing y'all a whole ass episode dedicated to Lesley Greene's play that has been bringing these crucial facts to the THEE-AYE-TAH, baby!! Early in August, Record Store Day held their annual "Summer Camp" meeting in New Orleans, once again returning to the lovely Hotel Monteleone, in the heart of the French Quarter, for a few days of meeting, schmoozing, and, frankly, Big Easy cuisine. During the week, host Paul Myers recorded a couple of live interviews with musicians talking about their approach to the music business in 2025. Today, we are sharing one of them. Guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer David Rawlings, whose most recent album with Gillian Welch, Woodland, was one of the best records of 2024, sat down with Paul in the Hotel Monteleone ballroom to discuss his duo's truly independent, and self-reliant, approach to the business of music making and distribution. Welch and Rawlings are co-owners of Nashville's Woodland Studio, their own Acony Records label, and now, they are partners in their own prestige pressing facility, Paramount Pressing & Plating, in Denver, Colorado. It's a fun talk! The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. When Joshua Robinson was in college, he was planning to become an English teacher and football coach when an opportunity for grad school appeared. Rather than sticking with his original plan, he decided to go to law school in the Big Easy. There, with his wife and first child, he completed his degree, but then he had to figure out how to use it. After returning to Arkansas, he decided to forego private practice and instead entered the prosecuting attorney's office, eventually rising to Chief Prosecuting Attorney for Benton County, Arkansas. Now, he has his sights set on the 2026 election and the position of circuit judge. In this episode, Josh discusses his background, his motivations, some cases, and why he chose to focus on serving the public rather than going for the big bucks. Give it a listen, it's a good one. #law #Prosecution #prosecutor #circuitjudge #joshuarobinson

HOUR ONE: Love, money, divorce, anger, and murder. One Pennsylvania family had it all and then some in the late 1800's. (The Butler County Tragedy) *** Count Saint Germain and Jacques Saint Germain, John and Wayne Carter, the Casket Girls of New Orleans. Despite many years between all of their lives, they all still have one grisly thing in common. All were thought to be, and possibly were, real vampires tied to the Big Easy… a place where real blood-suckers continue to live and roam the streets even now in the twenty-first century. (Vampires of New Orleans) *** They have a long history in the United Kingdom, stalking the moors and fog-carpeted streets in the night. But it appears hounds from Hell have also made their way to the Americas. (American Hellhounds)==========HOUR TWO: On a barren field in the U.S. state of Georgia, five granite slabs rise in a star pattern. Each of them weighs over 20 tons and on top of them, there is a capstone. Nobody knows who built it or why they were placed there, but one popular opinion that their purpose is to guide humanity after a predicted post-apocalyptic event that will come in the not so distant future. (The American Stonehenge) *** When you think "fairies," what comes to mind? You probably picture an adorable and sparkly creature akin to Disney's Tinker Bell, a lovely - and above all, friendly - presence. You may even want to make contact with them. Unfortunately, glittering humanoids with butterfly wings are the stuff of children's books. Retrace faerie folklore, and you'll discover their secret scary origins. (The Dark Side of Fairies) *** In the Summer of 1949, a geologist named Vadim Kolpakov discovered a strange feature on the surface of the earth in the Bodaibo, Irkutsk, region of South-Eastern Siberia. Encircled by a largely treed area, this anomaly is oval with a conical crater that contains a small ball-like mound in its middle. The geologic mystery has baffled scientists who are uncertain of what caused this weird formation. (What Caused the Patomskiy Crater) *** Is there any truth behind the enduring legend of the werewolf? In “There's No Business Like Hansen's Sno Bliz-ness,” Gravy producer Eve Troeh takes us to New Orleans, home of the sno-ball. In the South you need strategies to beat the summer heat, and ice plays a big role. Street vendors used to shave big blocks of ice by hand and add flavored syrup—a treat that became known as a sno-ball in the Big Easy. In the late 1930s, a local man, Ernest Hansen, invented a machine that changed the tradition. Sharp blades, encased in metal, turned chunks of ice into the most fluffy, fine “snow,” and he eventually patented this creation. While he kept his day job in New Orleans' manufacturing industry, Ernest's wife Mary ran with her husband's invention. She set up shop at home and eventually moved to a brick-and-mortar, dishing up fresh “snow” and dousing them with signature flavored syrups that she made by hand. They called their place Hansen's Sno-Bliz. Remarkably, Ernest's hand-built machines are still in use today, as are many of Mary's syrup recipes, and the business continues to cool off customers with some “air-conditioning for your tummy.” Hansen's Sno-Bliz is now in its 86th year, with Ernest and Mary's granddaughter, Ashley Hansen, at the helm. Ashley's was a long and loving journey to take on the business. She learned alongside her grandparents day by day. In a city that practically worships tradition, she honors her family and her customers by maintaining not just the original 1930s ice-shaving mechanics and syrup recipes, but also by cultivating the warm hospitality her grandparents always extended to anyone who entered. The cinder block corner shop on New Orleans' Tchoupitoulas Street looks humble, but you'll always find a line of customers stretching outside around the corner. The James Beard Foundation even bestowed Hansen's with its prestigious title of American Classic. New Orleanians from every corner of the city—and visitors from all around the world—eagerly line up to experience Hansen's, and form an of-the-moment community with each other as they choose their flavors and chat. In this cool edition of Gravy, Ashley Hansen shares the history, innovation, and spirit of her family's institution, always with Hansen's Sno-Bliz motto in mind: “There are no shortcuts to quality.” Learn more about your ad choices. We get into a secret partnership between the New Orleans Police Department and Project NOLA, a private nonprofit organisation that owns and operates an extensive network of cameras blanketing New Orleans. For years, Project NOLA has been running live facial recognition through their cameras and sending automated notifications to the police when a match is made using Project NOLA's privately maintained list of “wanted people.” By going through an unofficial private partner, police have been able to sidestep and undermine legal prohibition on their use of AI technologies like facial recognition. We get into the history of using New Orleans as a testbed for policing technology, the dangerous precedent being set by this public-private relationship, and how this surveillance nightmare is on track to become even more expansive and unleashed thanks to potential policy changes. ••• Police secretly monitored New Orleans with facial recognition cameras https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/05/19/live-facial-recognition-police-new-orleans/ ••• A bad facial recognition match costs Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto's office. When New Orleans native Ed Haslam began his research into the curious life and shocking murder of brilliant Tulane medical professor Dr. Mary Sherman, he didn't imagine that his inquiry would reveal a secret lab connected to some of the city's most unusual and historically significant citizens—Lee Harvey Oswald, David Ferrie, Guy Bannister, mob boss Carlos Marcello, medical titan Dr. Alton Oschner—and forces high up in the government. Nor did he expect his discoveries to change our understanding of the polio vaccine and AIDS, or the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. His book, “Dr. Mary's Monkey,” lays out the weird nexus of medical research, the CIA, Castro, and Oswald that all came together in the summer of ‘63 in the Big Easy. The plot he discovered is especially relevant today for its notable absence in the recently declassified JFK documents.Heroes Behind HeadlinesExecutive Producer Ralph PezzulloProduced & Engineered by Mike DawsonMusic provided by ExtremeMusic.com

In this episode, we talk with Christopher Nobles of Piety & Desire Chocolate in New Orleans.I visited New Orleans a very long time ago on a college road trip, and a lot of my images from that trip are still so sharp and clear. My impression of the city was that it didn't feel like it could exist in the United States, like it existed in a parallel version of the US or in a foreign country. The buildings and the foliage and the cemeteries—it all felt like it was just draped in this elegant decay. I haven't been back, sadly, but would love to revisit it now after having seen a lot more of the world and see how the city has changed, but more importantly, how I've changed and how my impressions of a place change with that.Christopher Nobles is a lifelong New Orleans resident, and at Piety & Desire Chocolate he brings elegance and indulgence to his range of bars and confections. In true Big Easy style, many of them incorporate alcoholic beverages from some of the city's new generation of producers. We talk about the flavors of New Orleans, its personality, and how it all makes its way into his chocolate. You can learn more about Piety & Desire Chocolate and order their bars on their website, or follow them on Instagram.
