Well folks, the end was nigh and now it's here. What a fun ride this has been. Whether you're just now watching or listening to us, been with us since the beginning (whoa, hell yeah, btw), we wanted to say THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for even wasting your time on our silly little podcast. If nothing else, this is a great time capsule to a very special time in human history, and expertly catalogues the growing friendship between two people. With this finale episode, we swung big and decided to talk about two movies: "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and "A League of Their Own". While on the surface, their differences could not be more starkly apparent, there is one clear connection that eagle-eyed watchers of both films will know. We took that as a clear signal from the eons of time immemorial that we chose the correct two films to discuss, and that this was indeed the proper time to close this chapter of our lives. So take care of each other, show your favorite people your favorite things, and nerd out together. In honor of Matt Wolf's big wins at the Emmys this year--not only for "Pee-wee as Himself" as Best Documentary Feature, but for his own win as director of that documentary as well as picture editing for Damian Rodriguez--we are re-releasing our interview with him at Sundance earlier this year. As Director Matt Wolf shows in his insightful and fun 2-part HBO series “Pee-wee as Himself”, in Pee-wee, Paul Rubens found a persona that allowed him to both reveal and yet hide some core truths about who he was. Fascinated with television and show business since he was a boy, Rubens combined elements of his childhood's pop culture with the art world of Southern California in the 70s and early 80s to craft a character that would both conquer the then punkish milieu of Melrose Avenue as well as create a nationally televised children's TV show. To achieve this, Wolfe delineates how Rubens deliberately foreclosed both his potential love life as well as cast aside long-held friendships. Wolfe's series demonstrates both the costs as well as the benefits of outsized talent and ambition. You can watch “Pee-wee as Himself” on HBO and HBO Max starting Friday, May 23rd. Follow: @mattpwolf on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and X The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.
This week we're looking at the arch-cult film from 1988, Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Its released was botched entirely by the distributor who were almost deliberately defiant in their unwillingness to screen the movie on much more than a few screens. It found its legs on cable and VHS where it was an instant hit and went on to launch a merchandising empire culminating in a video game and one of Universal Studios' most popular attractions at Halloween Horror Nights. When a UFO that looks an awful lot like a circus tent lands in Crescent Cove and aliens that look an awful lot like circus clowns wander into town with murder and mayhem in mind its up to a local cop, his ex-girlfriend, and her manchild boyfriend to stop them in their tracks and save Crescent Cove. Directed by the Chiodo Brothers, who were known for ambitious special effects, stop motion animation, and puppetry with credits under their belt like Elf, Critters, and Pee Wee's Big Adventure, it's a send up of 50's alien invasion movies with a plot that's almost one-to-one for the classic 1958 film, The Blob. We love it. You love it. Let's love it together. Have a listen.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/
Tarik and Ann start this week's tour of Milwaukee food news with a trip to the Caribbean ... sort of. The tropically minded cuisine will get a soul-food twist at new restaurant Jerkin' Me Crazy, which is set to open on Center Street this October. The concept from restaurateur Darryl Simmons will offer baked mac and cheese, chicken done three ways (jerk, curry, stew) and Caribbean-inspired cocktails — with some live jazz thrown in for good measure.Moving from Center Street to 3rd Street, the popular food hall just got a new tenant in Bebe Zito, the Minneapolis-based burger/ice cream joint from Ben Spangler and former MIAD student Gabriella Grant. When you stop by the new stall at the 3rd Street Market Hall, expect burgers (obviously), chicken sandwiches and ice cream flavors that can get a little unconventional. We also got another grand opening from a place we've talked about on the pod before: Summer of '85, the flashback-themed bar/restaurant on MLK Drive that features a patio, arcade, DJ booth and menu with plenty of nods to the 1980s. The Pee Wee's Big Adventure homage, “The Large Marge” (an oversized hibiscus/prickly pear margarita), is a personal favorite. Finally, we chat about the rebrand in the Deer District (Good City is now Explorium Distilled), as well as Ann's captivating interview with Birch chef de cuisine Zach Castillo in the print version of Milwaukee Magazine. The two got into Castillo's past as a ballerino (a male ballet dancer) and how the discipline required by the pursuit carried over to his next phase in the food world.

"Life has been a journey I am proud of," Libra Forde. A perfect quote to not only describe Libra's life so far, but also this interview. Libra, the Executive Director of the Women's Foundation of Oregon was born and raised in New York City. The only child of two wildly talented parents (her mother was a successful runway model and Dad was Denzel Washington's first acting coach and the King of Cartoons on Pee-Wee's Playhouse), she talks about the influence they both had on her. Her parents were adamant that she go to college and think about a "real job," and while she says she struggled in college (it wasn't her first choice), she turned things around and made it work for her. The journey continues with a move to Hawaii, finding her voice in Toastmasters, becoming a keynote speaker, and working to make this place beyond our existence.

On the forty- ninth episode of All the Film Things, I had the pleasure of interviewing producer/ director Jonathan Berman! Jonathan Berman is a California- based producer/ director who has been working in the industry for nearly 40 years. Before making his own documentaries often focused on sub- cultures not often highlighted in mainstream media, such as Commune (2005) and The Shvitz (1993), he worked as a producer, co- writer, and assistant sound editor on films and television shows with one of his first jobs being a production assistant on the set of Pee Wee's Playhouse. My Friend Paul (1999), Jonathan's sophomore documentary for which he directed, wrote, and produced was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival in 1999. His latest film, Calling All Earthlings (2018), won the Debut Feature Competition Jury Prize at the Illuminate Film Festival in 2018. Aside from his work in film production, he is a professor at Cal State San Marcos School of Arts and has taught courses on subjects like documentary filmmaking, media distribution, and both US and international cinema.Jonathan's documentary Commune, which is focused on the commune of Black Bear Ranch in the late 60s through the 70s, is celebrating its 20th anniversary by being screened in its newly restored form across the US. Three more screenings in California have been announced with the next in San Rafael on September 12, another in Los Angeles on September 17, and the last announced screening on September 20 in Ojai, California. More screenings are expected to be announced so follow @CommuneTheMovie on Instagram and Facebook to stay updated on the film and its upcoming screenings! This is Jonathan's first time on ATFT! I got connected to Jonathan thanks to Kelly Hargraves who presented me this excellent opportunity and then became a big help in setting the interview up. This episode was recorded on August 7, 2025. In this episode, Jonathan talks about his post- production process, specifically when it comes to trimming down hundreds of hours of footage to form a film, as well as his love for old noir and comedy films from the 1930s, and meeting Christopher Nolan. We also compared his film Commune to one of my favorite films: Easy Rider (1969)! All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

The Righteous Gemstones is a big broad comedy about excess, except for the first episode of season 4, which takes place nearly 200 years before the main series. With the American Civil as the backdrop, this story is gritty and dirty, a complete departure from the bulk of the series. Pee-wee as Himself is a disarming documentary playing with what is true and what is Hollywood gamesmanship. Featuring an uncompromising interview with Paul Reubens as he wrestles with where Pee-Wee starts and Reubens ends. A common thread between these two projects is pristine sound work that leads the charge. MOVIE MIKE'S MOVIE PODCAST: Mike was recently inspired by the Paul Reubens’ documentary after learning about Pee Wee’s Big Adventure being such an important first film for Tim Burton. He shared what directors he believes made the biggest splashes with their debut studio films, why he thinks the Oscars are wrong about animation and what new directors are just heating up. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about The Phoenician Scheme from one of his favorite directors Wes Anderson. Benicio Del Toro plays a wealthy and maligned industrialist Zsa Zsa Korda , who, after surviving one too many assassination attempts by rivals, names his forgotten daughter as his sole heir-over his eight sons. Mike talks about if Wes Anderson is still cool, where it ranks among his most recent films and why Michael Cera was born for this role. In the Trailer Park, Mike and Kelsey talk about Wicked: For Good, going to see Wicked on Broadway this summer and how it lines up with The Wizard of Oz. New Episodes Every Monday! In this compelling episode of The Lo Life, host Lo is joined by actor, writer, and producer Greg Furman to dissect the unexpected, emotional, and eye-opening documentary on Paul Reubens—the man behind the iconic Pee-wee Herman. Together, they unpack the cultural impact of a character that defined a generation, while also exploring the darker side of fame and the media's relentless effort to tear down one of Hollywood's most unique creative voices. The episode dives into how Reubens' eccentric genius challenged societal norms, only to be met with scandal, public shaming, and conservative-fueled controversy. Lo and Greg bring their own Hollywood experience into the conversation, drawing powerful parallels between their creative journeys and Reubens' battle to stay true to himself in an industry that doesn't always reward originality. What starts as a pop culture deep dive turns into something far more human—an inspiring and surprisingly emotional conversation about art, identity, and what it costs to be different. This isn't just a tribute to Pee-wee—it's a reexamination of a misunderstood icon, and a reminder that the truth is rarely what makes the headlines Facebook: Join the Coven: The Lo Life FB Group Instagram: @thelolifepodcast Your host: @stylelvr Guest: Greg Furman TikTok: @thelolifepodcast We have deals and steals for our kings and kweens- All thanks to our sponsors QUINCE: High fashion clothing for affordable prices. The new HBO documentary Pee-Wee As Himself isn't the boilerplate Hollywood profile you think it is. You get the biographical details you expect – how young avant-garde artist Paul Ruebens created the persona of Pee-Wee Herman, and the meteoric rise and fall that followed. But you also get a sense of what it cost Reubens to insist that Pee-Wee wasn't simply a persona, but in fact a real person. It's streaming now on Max.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopculture Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
