A Catholic exorcist sprinkles holy water on an inmate's tattoo and the man starts screaming that it burns. Over a decade as an exorcist has shown Father John exactly how evil gets carried into a home — a doll, a statue, a souvenir — and goes to work on the people you love before you ever feel it in the room. Catholic exorcist and longtime prison chaplain Father John breaks down generational curses, cursed objects sold in ordinary shops, the demon that admitted hatred alone can generate a curse, and the fairy statue that concealed a decapitated priest sealed in plastic. He explains how to tell mental illness from a spiritual attack, why heavy pornography use can leave a demon attached, and what the Church never taught its own priests. Raw field notes from a man who does this work every week — not theory. In this episode Jef "jumps the shark" and picks a decent movie for a change of spooky scenery. He picked 1990's "The Exorcist 3" aka "Legion" written and directed by the one and only William Peter Blatty. This film is rare in that the 3rd installment of the franchise is actually good! The true hero of this movie's thumbs up status is one of the best damn actors ever to grace a screen, Mr. Brad Dourif! And while this flick is filled with great shots, cool scares and a killer sound design, Mr. Blatty also did an amazing job directing even if the picture released was not entirely how he wanted it. If you have never seen it, be sure to check it out because Jef, Josh and Brian think you might like it! Enjoy!
Almost two billion Christians recite the Apostles Creed which states "He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. And one more thing...he descended to hell.In this powerful reflection Father Martins reminds us how brilliant and all encompassing Jesus' victory on the cross was. Hell despite it's best efforts became a pawn in God's scheme and now that which is meant for evil, God uses for good. How to balance the power of AI with the danger of AI may be the challenge of our age. As a Catholic, and as a parent, this job only gets more difficult. Join me in the next episode of Catholic Life Coach For Men as Andrew Gillsmith and I explore this topic as Catholic parents. He is a fiction author whose upcoming book is intended to explore this issue as a Catholic. We discuss some ideas for how to use it, some possible guard rails that parents might consider, and share our stories. This episode is not intended as a definitive "how-to" but rather as the start of a much larger discussion. We provide some questions for you to think about when deciding how to use AI in your own household. Andrew Gillsmith's new novel, Our Lady of the Artilects, is a mind-bending supernatural science fiction novel where The Exorcist meets Westworld, with a light dusting of Snow Crash. The book is not yet released, but will be soon! I'm happy to announce I have a book out and available! You can find it on Amazon (more options to come.)
Roger Fires is a production designer—”Nobody”, “Violent Night”, “Psycho Killer”—and one of the films he loves most is William Friedkin's “The Exorcist” (1973). He first encountered it not in a theater but through a wall as a child in Brazil, told not to watch and so he listened in the dark. That experience kept him away for nearly twenty years. At thirty he finally watched it and fell completely in love—and the specificity of that arc is what makes this conversation worth your time.Andy and Pete dig into what Roger calls the “unnoticeably good” standard: the refrigerated set, the spatial geometry, the window that marks two deaths and carries the film's entire theological argument. They cover what makes Friedkin's approach—dread over spectacle, religious drama over horror movie—still impossible to replicate, and Roger talks about his work on “Psycho Killer” and the “Scrubs” reboot along the way.
Long before Pazuzu terrorized audiences in *The Exorcist*, this ancient Mesopotamian demon struck fear into the hearts of the Assyrians and Babylonians—both as a harbinger of destruction and an unlikely protector against even greater evils.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/pazuzuFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: The Exorcist is widely regarded as one of the most influential horror movies of all time. Even now, half a century after its release, it continues to terrify audiences, in large part due to its horrifying practical effects and iconic antagonist: Pazuzu. (Pazuzu, The Demon ‘The Exorcist' Made Famous) *** Latoya Ammons and her family claim to have experienced demonic possession that began when they moved into what became known as the “house of 200 demons” in 2011. (The Haunting on Carolina Street) *** In the eerie depths of 1920s Los Angeles, a sinister tale unfolded, shrouded in secrets and steeped in darkness. It all began with May Otis Blackburn and her daughter, Ruth, who claimed to receive divine revelations from the angels Gabriel and Michael. Thus emerged the enigmatic Blackburn Cult, a group entangled in a web of prophecies, tributes, and whispered mysteries. (The Blackburn Cult) *** 19th-century freak shows brought both the extraordinary and the macabre to captivated audiences far and wide. Among the peculiar spectacles of these exhibitions stood a man whose skeletal frame defied all norms of human anatomy… as his skeleton and skin appeared to be the only parts of his anatomy intact. (Seurat, The Living Skeleton) *** In the heat of summer in 2008, a mysterious creature washed ashore on a beach in Montauk, Long Island, sending shockwaves through the community. What began as a simple sighting by local resident soon exploded into a media frenzy, with wild theories and speculation running rampant. (Hot Montauk Summer) *** While epic Hollywood films often depict gladiators as men, the truth is far more captivating. We'll step into the arena with the women who dared to defy convention and enter the gladiatorial games. Darkness Radio presents: Paranormality: Normalising The Paranormal with Medium/Author, Kieran Stanislaw Mace! As above, so below. Soon, the unseen will put on a show.We measure the world with finite concepts such as up and down, left and right, dark and light, north and south, and so on. In this reality of many realities, our world is a quantum leap beyond our perceptions, so vast that it is understandable that we should feel safer mapping our perceptual plot of land in the universe. It is when we spend our lives nurturing the existence of that perceived plot of land that we lose sight of the vast valleys beyond, as we are convinced that plot is all there is. What if the parameters were all false? In the book "Paranormality," Stan takes you on a journey of out-of-body experiences, reality-shifting visions, meetings with powerful entities, memorable hauntings, and more. You may be reading this because you have questions of your own about life. This journey is proof that the most unusual events can happen to people just like you. By sharing these true stories, I hope to normalise the skill of inquisition, as we all benefit from learning from each other's experiences, leading us to a greater understanding of life itself and an appreciation of each other's individual pool of knowledge.Removing the misnomer of ‘paranormal' opens minds to be more receptive to learning from each other and the world around us, as we often use that word as a barrier to halt learning beyond the defined parameters. Now is the time for you to break those barriers, don't you think? On today's show, we sit down with Stan and talk about everything from the childhood accident that triggered the penultimate out-of-body experience, to his burgeoning mediumistic abilities, to how he overcomes denial of those abilities that combine with a crisis of faith and a Skeptical eye on the paranormal. We also discuss whether one can go into the paranormal field and remain a skeptic or cynic for their entire life once they continue to see repeated paranormal evidence! Suspiria (1977), Inferno (1980), and Mother of Tears (2007) There are very few horror fans out there who don't know the work of Dario Argento, especially the giallo films he's most famous for. While he only occasionally ventured into supernatural horror, whenever he did, he approached it with the same unmistakable style that defines all of his work. After helping define the giallo genre with Deep Red, Argento shifted gears and gave us Suspiria, a film that presented violence through a blinding explosion of color and an intense soundtrack that pounds through the speakers. It looked unlike anything audiences had really seen before. Three years later, Argento continued the saga of the dreaded Three Mothers with Inferno, expanding the mythology surrounding these wicked witches even further. Then, after a 27-year wait, he completed the trilogy with Mother of Tears. Say what you will about any or all of these films, but they are all unmistakably Dario Argento. In this episode, we're taking a look at all three entries in the Three Mothers trilogy, exploring both the mythology behind the Three Mothers and the unique qualities that set each film apart. We all have our favorite of the trilogy, but hopefully you'll come away with a new appreciation for moments or ideas you may have overlooked in previous viewings. So join us for our little study group as we dive into the worlds of Mater Suspiriorum, Mater Tenebrarum, and Mater Lachrymarum. But a word of caution… they don't like people knowing about them, so be warned. Films mentioned in this episode: The Beyond (1981), The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), The Black Cat (1989), Cannibal Ferox (1981), The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971), The Church (1989), Deep Red (1975), Demons 2 (1986), The Exorcist (1973), Eyes Without a Face (1960), The Five Days (1973), Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), Häxan (1922), The House by the Cemetery (1981), Inferno (1980), Mother of Tears (2007), Night of the Eagle aka Burn Witch Burn (1962), Opera (1987), Phantom of the Paradise (1974), Suspiria (1977), Tenebrae (1982)

Screenwriter Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight, The Exorcist, Mortal Kombat II) returns to The Kingcast to talk about... not Stephen King. Well, not directly, anyway. The topic up for discussion is Joe Hill's 2025 epic horror tome King Sorrow which contains many familial references and those don't just include his famous father. The story centers a group of college friends who uncover the ability to summon a dark force to combat their enemies, but like most dark forces this protection comes at a price.Hill tells this story over multiple decades and litters the narrative with nods to many King titles, from The Dead Zone to The Dark Tower. We discuss the book without spoilers for the first half of the conversation and dig into some of the more spoilery stuff in the back. Don't worry, make it very clear when we're transitioning to spoiler territory.Make sure to catch Mortal Kombat II written by our guest Jeremy Slater in theaters this weekend!

When we released Predatory in 2024, it drew a lot of criticism. Why would we include an episode where it didn't end well? The short answer is because it unfortunately proves the rule more than the exception. Many cases do not end well. Sin is intoxicating and hard to give up. For Dylan, he wanted the benefits of God without the relationship, and that wasn't going to work for Father Martins. In this revisit of the case file, Father Martins breaks down a very complex case and the bizarre psychological elements. How could a demon manipulate people into lust? Why would God permit that? Why did the demon remain dormant for so long before finally unleashing its attack on Dylan? Father Martins breaks down what dynamics are at play. Trigger Warning: This case file may be triggering to some listeners given the theme of sexual assault that is discussed. Listener discretion is advised. Over the last century, mummy movies have taken many different forms. But “Lee Cronin's The Mummy” pushes this classic tale into full-on body horror territory. Tune in as we break down this modern reimagining — from the most explicitly gory scenes, to the moments that gave us serious “The Exorcist” vibes, and how it channels the same brutal style Cronin brought to “Evil Dead Rise.”
This conversation was originally recorded in June 2024. Exorcist priest Fr. Chad Ripperger grew up working in his father's diesel mechanics shop, where he learned that reality doesn't care what you think or how you feel. A bolt either fits or it doesn't. A machine is either fixed or it isn't. And a man is either being formed or he's being stunted. In this conversation, Fr. Ripperger unpacks why young men today are trapped in adolescence, what the curse of Adam has to do with effeminacy, and how the simple act of learning to use tools and do hard work is the antidote to the softness crippling an entire generation. From the lessons his father taught him through one-liners and long days under the hood, to why men find such deep fulfillment in buying a new tool, to how his formation as a mechanic directly prepared him for his work as an exorcist, Fr. Ripperger connects the practical and the spiritual in a way only he can. If you're raising boys or trying to become the man you never had an example of, this one's worth your time.
Writer Jeremy Slater has built serious genre credentials across major IP, from creating Marvel's Moon Knight and developing Netflix's The Umbrella Academy to writing on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the television adaptation of The Exorcist. Here he talks about his latest feature film, Mortal Kombat II, and his approach to adapting IP and making it his own.
Synopsis After the sudden disappearance of a journalist's young daughter in Cairo, his family is left shattered. Eight years later, they receive an unexpected call that their daughter has been found, although she is not quite the same. What begins as a moment of overwhelming joy turns into something much more disturbing. As unsettling events begin to unfold, her father and others start to dig into the mystery of her disappearance to find out what really happened to Katie during all those years. Review of Lee Cronin’s The Mummy I was really excited going into Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, the intro had me hooked and invested in these characters and the film is beautifully shot, even the gory parts. It does feel more like The Exorcist and Evil dead than a mummy movie but it was a solid attempt at doing something different. The special effects are incredible, I genuinely felt nauseated at certain points and had to look away. Unfortunately this doesn't make up for an unnecessary 2 hour and 13 minute run time. Parts became repetitive and there were many scenes that were unnecessary or could have been compiled concisely into other scenes. What really lost points for me more than anything was the awful ending that was also way too long and turned almost comical but not in a good way. Score 5/10
Scripture says the power of life and death is the tongue. Demons lie. Satan is known as the Father of lies. So what does that tell us about the importance of using our speech in honest ways? In a culture that is often marked by how well we communicate, how often do we stop to consider the weight and gravity of what we are saying. Are there areas of our lives creating spiritual vulnerabilities because of our "sins of speech?". Father Gregory Pine joins the show to share his reflections on how we can and must train our speech to avoid inviting mayhem into our lives. Get some plants and build your special space. Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Matthew Petrusek, senior director of the Word on Fire Institute and the host of the Word on Fire Show. Thank you for joining us. Hollywood is not known for being friendly to Christianity in general or Catholicism in particular, especially nowadays; unfortunately, there is no shortage of storylines and characters that mock and even demonize believers. At the same time, however, whenever the film industry wishes to depict a "religious looking" scene or add a transcendent element to the plot, it frequently employs Catholic architecture, Catholic sacramentals, and even Catholic priests to do so. What should we make of this ambivalence to the faith? What does Hollywood get wrong, and what, perhaps to our surprise, does Hollywood get right about Catholicism and the priesthood? What do these portrayals tell us more broadly about potential openness within the entertainment industry to God's existence, the divinity of Christ, good and evil, and life after death? Here to take a look at some pivotal classic and contemporary films that prominently feature Catholicism and Catholic priests, with an eye to unpacking their significance for the wider entertainment culture, is Bishop Robert Barron.
