Spooky September wouldn't be complete without talking about the spookiest movie of all-time! This week on Ready 2 Retro, Max's dad, Tim, sits in the cohost seat for the very first time to talk about the 50th anniversary of The Exorcist (1973). Both Max and Tim share why this was the scariest the movie they've ever seen in their youth and why it took them 50 years (for Tim) and 20 years (for Max) to revisit this cinematic masterpiece. Hope you enjoy it. It was so much fun recording it!This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5522857/advertisement

As we arrive at the end of season 1 of The Exorcist, we find ourselves mind blown, overwhelmed and eager to talk about all of it. In this episode, we sit down with Vincent Lampert, an American Catholic priest – and the designated exorcist of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis… Father Lampert didn't necessarily choose to become an exorcist; instead, he was appointed to this position by Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein. As one of only twelve designated Catholic exorcists in the United States, Vincent has been practicing this fascinating ministry since 2005. So, what does it take to perform an exorcism, and what “theatrics of the devil” has Father Lampert witnessed? Tune in now to see for yourself… Join us now to learn about: How priests become exorcists. How Vincent learned exorcism practices. The 4 criteria for true demonic possession. The ways that demons can take advantage of humans. Want to follow Father Lampert on his journey as an exorcist? Click here now! Episode also available on Apple Podcasts: http://apple.co/30PvU9C

On this week's episode we talk about the culturally ubiquitous phenomena of spirit possession, how the Catholic Church has a monopoly on the concept and why its various manifestations of power can be considered either good or bad depending on the context. We discuss tongues of flame, spontaneous levitation, strange smells and the sudden appearance of inexplicable wounds like the stigmata. In the extended edition of the show we loop back around to describe how these same phenomena are described in Japanese mythology and folklore before talking about Furbies, demons of the Goetia and how exorcism works from a Chaos Magick perspective. In 1973, William Friedkin terrorized the world with The Exorcist and then decided to make a film even more grim: a remake of George Clouzot's The Wages of Fear. This was an audacious move, since the 1953 original was already well-loved and regarded as one of the most suspenseful films of all time. But Friedkin followed his muse and created Sorcerer (1977), which belongs in the pantheon of Great Underappreciated Films. Like The Exorcist, it's a frightening peek into Hell; unlike that film, however, evil is pervasive rather than localized. No exorcist can cleanse Porvenir of evil; Max Von Sydow isn't showing up any time soon. You can try to outrun the Sorcerer, but it's like driving a truck and trying to drive away from its contents. Rarely has a completely nihilistic and sobering film experience been so exhilarating. William Friedkin's memoir, The Friedkin Connection, is an engaging read and includes a chapter on the making of Sorcerer. Follow us on Twitter or Letterboxd. Incredible bumper music by John Deley. Actors Griffin Dunne, Mark Metcalf, and Amy Robinson were looking for film projects for their fledgling production company and all agreed that Ann Beattie's novel Chilly Scenes of Winter was ripe for adaptation. Indie director Joan Micklin Silver came on board with John Heard and Mary Beth Hurt leading the cast. The film struggled at the box office in 1979 under the new United Artists imposed title Head Over Heels. When it was re-released in 1982 as Chilly Scenes of Winter, the film fared better and has since become a cult title. Dan and Vicky discuss the romantic "comedy" along with their thoughts on the end of Netflix's DVD service, the women of Sex and the City sequel And Just Like That, and Dan's planned trip to Spain. Welcome to the At The Flicks early Summer review show. Early Summer I hear you say, as everyone prepares for Halloween. Ah, but the At The Flicks team are like fine wine, we age well (other than referring to someone in the present tense who passed away after we completed the show!). And just to compound that delay, this is only half of the show! The other half will be released tomorrow. Trust me, there is method behind the madness of that split. With our extended team of excellent reviewers (and Jeff), we are having more in-depth discussions on our chosen movies these days. We tried to edit them down, however, to be honest we just didn't know what to cut out. Although we all panicked when Graham started brandishing one of Elijah's excellent swords! But we argued, we just cannot drop a two hour review show on our listeners. Not even Jeff's wife wants to hear him whittering on for that length of time. So, we had to come up with another solution. The answer is to split these shows in two now and in the future. In future the format will be Show one - A topical movie discussion then two film reviews (and from next time a special something just for listeners). Show two - three in depth reviews. And we promise you that show two will always be released the day after show one. There's too much stress in the world as it is, we don't want to keep you waiting any longer than we have to for you to hear your favourite reviewer. Now that's an idea, maybe we can have a poll to decide who that is – no, strike that, Graham will just get his extended family to vote for himself multiple times. Now that's sorted, let's talk about our “topical” discussion from a couple of months ago as featured in this edition. Since the recording, an aspect of the discussion is now out of date. Mainly because the director we referenced, William Freidkin, has sadly passed away since we recorded this episode. A great loss to cinema – and certainly to 1970's cinema. The Exorcist, The French Connection and the incredibly under rated Sorcerer – three of the best films of the decade. A magnificent talent, a sad loss. Coming back up to date as this recording will allow, there are two extended reviews for you here, and they couldn't be more different Air : The story of the Michael Jordan shoe. Now in the previous review extravaganza, Darren blew everyone's mind with his alternate take on Tar. This time he does it again with Air. Listen to what he says and how everyone reacts to that. We have all had to watch this superior movie again. Fast X : Jeff, the ultimate Fast and Furious fan leads this review. Is he mocked by the rest of the reviewers (wouldn't be the first time) or do they humour him as he calls it one of the best action films of all time? Check out our review to find out. Don't judge to harshly, remember he is still receiving treatment Tomorrow, we release the second half of the show which has reviews of Guardians Of The Galaxy 3, Spiderman Across The Spider Verse and The Swimmers. Find out what the team think of that motley crew. See you then. Bye for now.
