John Cusack Breaks Down Momo: Artaud, Aliens & a Rescue From an Insane Asylum John Cusack is back on Reza Rifts, and this time the conversation has nothing to do with the movies that made him famous. He sits down with Keith Reza to break down Momo, his debut graphic novel from Mad Cave Studios, hitting shelves September 29. What starts as a book talk turns into a full on history lesson. Cusack walks through the real life threads behind the story: Antonin Artaud, the French surrealist who once terrified all of Europe, Jackie Gleason, Richard Nixon, and a White House flight log with one name blacked out. He explains what actually happened, what he invented, and why he let the myths stay in. Cusack also gets into the craft. He wrote Momo in a loose screenplay form, built footnotes into the pages so readers could hear the soundtrack in their heads, and handed the art over to Ignacio Noe with one instruction: draw what you want. He talks about touring the book at San Diego Comic Con, what real fans pick up on, and the next project he and Noe already have in the works, The Chemical Wedding. Then the two of them get loose. When sixteen-year-old Anneliese Michel began having seizures and hallucinations in 1968, her parents took her to a doctor, who diagnosed Anneliese with temporal lobe epilepsy and depression and recommended psychiatric treatment. Two years later, however, her delusions and hallucinations returned, manifesting in the form of “devil faces” and voices that telling her she was evil and would be going to hell. DELIVER US FROM EVIL occupies an intriguing crossroads in genre film: police procedurals with demonic horror. I've read Scott Derrickson's 2014 film described as a blend of SEVEN and THE EXORCIST, which is accurate. To take it a step further, this movie's based on the real accounts of one Ralph Sarchie, a NYPD detective-turned-demonologist for the Catholic Church. Having a trained policeman in your church's back pocket when it comes to investigating demonic claims proves to be fortuitous: Sarchie can sniff bullshit from miles away. But this movie isn't based on the fakers; these stories aren't dismissed as poorly handled mental illness. Cops are used to witnessing fucked-up shit. But fucked-up shit that's inexplicable?That's where the movie finds Eric Bana's Sergeant Sarchie (sounds like a G.I. Joe figure) as he and his partner (a lovably brash, dual-knife-wielding Joel McHale) investigate a series of bizarre crimes in the Bronx. The evidence points to three veterans who've returned from Iraq with the spiritual remnants of a dark discovery.When Jesuit priest Mendoza (Edgar Ramirez) informs Sarchie of the high likelihood this comes from the demonic, the cop's skepticism wastes no time presenting in rolled eyes and sarcastic quips. But Mendoza, a man with his own difficult burdened past, recognizes a lost soul when he sees one. One of the best qualities of DELIVER US FROM EVIL is its focus on Sarchie as a faithless man, calcified by a bombardment of hate and trauma. This shell won't be easy to crack at all, let alone crack wide enough to allow faith in the cosmos or God to manifest. I've watched enough of Derrickson's movies to clock his leads as people in search of possibility, a new way of being, inner explorers of faith. But either from societal rigidity or internal roadblocks, they resist any worldviews they don't immediately understand, of which their knowledge can't be used to dominate/control their environments. But when the shell shatters, it fuckin' shatters.Derrickson's movies don't paint these journeys as easy. The dude who directed this and THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE doesn't present demons you could wave away as elaborate makeup jobs. Their movements look inhuman. They shudder. They scurry out of windows. They grind their fingers down to nubs frantically sketching a demon's mantra. If you're gonna dare to face down the Devil, he's not gonna go without a fight, without threatening loved ones and dredging up dried wounds. Welcome to another Film vs. Fact episode where we look at the true paranormal story and compare it with the film version. For this one, we'll tackle one of the most famous horror films of the 1970s: The Exorcist. William Blatty's 1971 novel of the same name was a huge success and the 1973 film would become the highest grossing R-rated film for almost 30 years until it was finally surpassed by The Matrix Reloaded in 2003. The film's popularity is undeniable, but what about the story itself? Of course it was based on a true story, that's why we're here! The film is inspired by the 1949 exorcism of a thirteen-year-old Maryland boy. Did the film get anything right? You'll have to listen to the episode to find out. Signs of Life with Bob Ginsberg Negative Energy, Grief Counseling, and the Ethics of Delivering Messages with Dusten Lyvers Medium Insights host Roman Karpishka catches up with newly credentialed Dr. Dusten Lyvers, a Forever Family Foundation certified medium, about negative energy, Ouija boards, grief therapy, and the ethics of delivering difficult messages from spirit. A Reunion And A New Doctorate Roman Karpishka opens Signs of Life's Medium Insights hour by welcoming back certified Forever Family Foundation medium Dusten Lyvers, joking about the pronunciation of his last name and tracing it to an old family surname, Levers, recorded in an ancestry book dating to 1669. Lyvers shares that since his last appearance, around Christmas, he has finished a seven-year doctoral journey and can now be called Dr. Dusten. Karpishka congratulates him, and the two banter about hair, aging, and Theresa Caputo's line that 'the higher the hair, the closer to God.' The mood is warm and unhurried, setting up an hour built around open conversation rather than readings; Karpishka repeats his standing rule that the show never delivers messages on air. A Haunted Apartment And A Search For Answers Crystal calls from New Hampshire describing years of frightening activity in her apartment that began in September 2023, weeks after a sudden death in her life, including sightings of a nun on her balcony, a floating head, and photos that appeared to show movement. Lyvers tells her he doubts a portal was opened but says significant loss often becomes a doorway through which people suddenly begin sensing spirit, sometimes overnight, a pattern he says many mediums describe in their own histories. He recommends she keep protecting and cleansing her space, connect with a support community, and seek out a spiritually open therapist rather than face the experience alone, adding that her sensitivity may itself indicate mediumship ability. Karpishka points her toward Victor Zammit's online resources and Lyvers mentions Psychology Today's therapist directory, which lets users filter for practitioners open to spirituality. Crystal says the activity has eased since she stopped photographing it, and thanks the hosts before the call ends warmly. In this end of Summer Episode of Off the Record we have a big mix of genres to report on.Ken, Stewart and Tyler sit down to watch Exit 8 from 2025. A curiosity by Tyler, the film starts off on a nice foot, but soon becomes repetitive and not too interesting. Exit 8 is a video game puzzle film that is popular among the young and in Japanese culture. Directed by Genki Kawamura and written by himself as well as Kotake Create and Kentaro Hirase. The film pretty much follows the same concept as the popular video game, which is available on steam. Ken and Stewart were not impressed, while Tyler seem more on board with this lost in a train tunnel exit (pun not intended.)Rasto then gives his short review on American Gods the TV series from 2017 and on. Created by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green with Ricky Whittle, Emily Browning and Yetide as starring actors. The series is about a new set of pagan gods who are not too happy that humanity no longer worships them. In their desperation they come up with new titles of modern culture to become the new gods. However the former god of war has other plans for the group. Rasto was somewhat hopeful for the series, despite not getting through the entirety of it and instead focused on the first two seasons.As the episode progresses, Stewart does his comparison of the 2021 film The Trip by Tommy Wirkola which is the original film that Over Your Dead Body is based on (English American Remake.) The film seems to be a bit more savage and serious than the American remake.Ken then burns what is left of the film ‘ASH' which is a 2025 Sci-Fi horror. Directed by the Flying Lotus and staring Eiza Gonzalez. Unfortunately the film left a burnt taste in both Ken's and Stewart's mouth. It seems the plot may of been thrown into the fire. Ken however would still like the praise the Flying Lotus for his attempts at making this film look good and his abilities.Finally Rasto brings us back to a common genre we have covered numerous times with the film Deliver Us from Evil from 2014. According to Rasto this is a somewhat faithful attempt at how an Exorcist clone or style should be, unlike most of the slop out there. Written and Directed by Scott Derrickson starring Eric Bana.Stewart wraps up the episode with a hot take on Star Trek Strange New Worlds, and this indeed is one strange new world we live in with this mess of episodes that range from bad to good and good to bad.
