Danh Vo talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Vo was born in 1975 in Bà Rja, Vietnam and raised in Denmark. He lives and works between Germany, where he has a studio in Güldenhof, 80km outside Berlin, and Mexico City. His art is often founded in personal experiences and relationships, but alludes to wider social and political conditions and structures, both present and historical. The way he reflects on his autobiography is distinctive: his art is embedded in his experience as a Vietnamese immigrant to Europe as a child and queer identity, for instance, but his collaborative practice often stems from coincidences or serendipitous occurrences in daily life. Danh uses found objects of different registers, from household items to historic religious sculptures, as well as archival images and texts, and brings them into dynamic relationships, in which the exhibition space and context is often a vital component. He also incorporates the work of other artists and designers into his installations, and his practice has been likened to that of a curator or archaeologist. Ultimately, his vision is entirely his own, but by involving the thinking and making of others, he ensures that it resonates with discussion, providing more questions than answers. He reflects on his idea to set traps for himself through his art in order to question his desires, and how that relates to the viewer's experience of his work. He discusses the balance between his studio life in Güldenhof and his use of the exhibition space as a studio to forge his installations. He reflects on the influence of Felix Gonzalez-Torres and his writing on the work of Roni Horn, he discusses the many collaborations in his work, from that with the artist and writer Julie Ault to his project working with Martin Wong's mother on the collection she built with her son. And he explains why William Friedkin's The Exorcist (1973) has been the source for numerous works. Ghosts, demons, and the old cliché, things that go bump in the night. On television and film, there's Amityville, The Exorcist, Stranger Things, a long list of Stephen King adaptations, and they date back to the earliest days of the silents.  And CGI makes everything real. It's a bit different live on a stage. We suspend our disbelief, but we're in a community with the actors, we're seeing effects live as they happen, all with the question, How exactly did they do THAT? Which is a question asked multiple times in the entertaining if often incoherent and vapid play, Paranormal Activity, now at ACT's Toni Rembe Theatre through March 22nd. The curtain rises on a two-tiered set. Downstairs, the kitchen, dining and living room areas, with a staircase that takes us to a bedroom on one side, a bathroom on the other, and a third door to an unseen room. We're in England, near London perhaps, A young couple, Louise and James, have recently moved overseas from Chicago.  He has a tight relationship with his mother, with whom his closeness is revealed in the opening moments via a phone call. Mom is religious, he's now an atheist. Lou seems okay, now that she's on anti-depressants. She does believe in ghosts, though and we will shortly find out why. Horror has a long history in theatre, the modern era peaking with The Cat and the Canary in 1927 and Dracula shortly after. Then there's the old days, Hamlet's ghost,  and MacBeth's three witches. More recently, we have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Conor McPherson's Shining City. Paranormal Activity exploits all that, switching gears from laughter to horror, from sudden shocks to dawning awareness, augmented by a sound design that soothes, relaxes and suddenly startles. There's also the chemistry between the very good Cher Alvarez and Travis A. Knight as the young couple, we fear for them, and us. If one isn't drawn into the couple's issues, the slow build can become too slow, and the shocks too infrequent.. But should you buy into it, and can handle the sound and lighting, not to mention the story's senselessness or massive plot holes. Paranormal Activity is a fun night in the theatre, certainly more fun than the real horrors going on in Washington, Gaza, and elsewhere. If you think L.A. is Sodom and Gomorrah 2.0 today, it was not exactly Disney World in the 80s either. A movie came out in 1985 that showed the not so glamorous side of L.A. with a story about Secret Service agents chasing down a murderous, psychotic counterfeiter around L.A. That movie is William Friedkin's “To Live And Die In L.A.”, and if Friedkin's name sounds familiar, it's because he also directed “The Exorcist” and “The French Connection.” He brings his gritty, never-know-what-you're-gonna-get style to his action thriller. William L. Peterson plays the main character, Secret Service agent Richard Chance and his target in a quest for vengeance is a clever counterfeiter named Eric Masters, played by Willem Dafoe. Masters murders someone very close to Chance and that triggers a dangerous, frenzied pursuit where you never know who's going to make it out alive. “To Live And Die In L.A.” is also famous for a 80s cool soundtrack by Wang Chung. The indie studio will first tackle a series based on the franchise with Glen Powell among the executive producers and The Long Walk writer JT Mollner attached to direct. Powell, it's noted, will only have a producing role in the project and isn't slated to appear on screen.HBO is developing Baldur's Gate, a drama series based on Wizards of the Coast's video game franchise set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons with The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin attached to create, write, executive produce and showrun the TV adaptation. Unlike HBO's The Last Of Us, which retold the story from the PlayStation games, the Baldur's Gate TV series will be a continuation to the games, telling a story that takes place immediately after the events of Baldur's Gate 3.Callum Vinson has been cast in Prime Video's God of War adaptation series as Atreus, the 10 year old son of the main character Kratos.Chiwetel Ejiofor has joined the cast of Mike Flanagan's reboot of The Exorcist for Blumhouse alongside Scarlett Johansson.Ted Lasso star Phil Dunster is set to join the cast of Universal Pictures' live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 in the role of Eret.The David Fincher-directed follow-up to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood called The Adventures of Cliff Booth delivered a surprise trailer during the Super Bowl this weekend. Currently a release date on Netflix is unknown, although the trailer did end with 'Coming Soon.'Netflix has released the first trailer for season 2 of One Piece and set a release date of March 10th for the series.Warner Bros. Pictures is reuniting frequent collaborators Mike Flanagan and Stephen King on a new adaptation of The Mist, based on King's 1980 novella.Universal has set a release date of May 19, 2028 for The Mummy 4, which is set to return Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to the franchise.
