Happy Friday, Regular Guys and Gals! Hey Regular Guys and Gals, we did it again. We made it through another week! How trying to help can actually sabotage healing, and why presence, not fixing, is the real gift. How “helping energy” can be rooted in ego and disempower those we care about. When to lean in, when to back off, and how to spot the difference. How seeing people (really seeing them) changes everything, whether it's a friend in crisis or a waitress with perfect Diet Coke timing. How your victim story gets you attention....and entitlement and not in a good way. How nostalgia (and a few good carney memories) can spark gratitude and grit. How “The Magic” works when you work it. And why gratitude isn't just a tool — it's a way to rewire everything. RGF Bonus: The dream of “Victim Con” is born, Alice Cooper's unlikely spiritual side, Starbucks union organizing (courtesy of Evan), and what really happens when Kev almost entered the cube farm to be the temp from hell. In this episode, we welcome Dale Sherman, author of The Quentin Tarantino FAQ, who takes us deep into the life and career of one of cinema's most unconventional directors. Known first for his books on rock legends like Kiss and Alice Cooper, Dale turned his focus to Tarantino, exploring how a high school dropout and video store clerk rose to redefine independent film. From Tarantino's abandoned first attempt at filmmaking, My Best Friend's Birthday, to the unexpected breakthrough of Reservoir Dogs, Dale reveals how persistence, vision, and timing shaped the director's path and changed Hollywood forever. Dale also dives into the evolution of Tarantino's storytelling—his nonlinear structures, pop culture-laced dialogue, and signature use of music—while addressing the controversies surrounding violence and language in his films. Drawing on extensive research, Dale offers filmmakers and film lovers alike a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how Tarantino developed his craft and navigated criticism without losing his voice. This conversation is not just a biography but a blueprint for understanding how passion and originality can transform the art of filmmaking.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

The story of one of the sunniest and funniest personalities to emerge in the world of rock, the Turtles‘ Mark Volman, is being told in a book whose title is a play on the name of his biggest hit, “Happy Together”. However, unlike many memoirs, Volman's own words comprise less than five percent of the text. Instead, this is a third-person oral history, much like Legs McNeil's wonderful punk rock history opus from 2016, Please Kill Me.Mark Volman's Happy Forever is told almost entirely by 100 of his famous collaborators, rock scenesters, friends, and family, with the occasional sidebar from Mark himself. This six-decade-long narrative includes his rise to fame with the Turtles alongside his singing partner Howard Kaylan, their brilliant stint with Frank Zappa's the Mothers of Invention, their solo career as Flo & Eddie, and their role as backup singers on mega-hits by Marc Bolan, Bruce Springsteen, Alice Cooper, the Ramones, Steely Dan and more.

This is a rebroadcast of my 2018 interview with John Hamer & Lachlan MacKay from the Community of Christ. They'll bust some LDS myths about the Kirtland Temple, Word of Wisdom, Alice Cooper, and more! Check it out! https://youtu.be/NjnkS1Y-tls Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission A Journey Through Kirtland and Beyond The early history of the Latter-day Saint movement is far richer and more complex than many realize, marked by vibrant architectural innovations, evolving theological understandings, and a dramatic succession crisis that led to the formation of numerous distinct traditions. Recent discussions with Community of Christ leaders, Apostle Lachlan MacKay and Seventy John Hamer, offer fascinating insights into this intricate past, shedding light on topics ranging from the Kirtland Temple's original appearance to the diverse interpretations of core doctrines. John is the author of Scattering of the Saints: Schism Within Mormonism. Bust LDS Myths on Kirtland Temple: Kaleidoscope of Early Worship The Kirtland Temple, a pivotal edifice in early Latter-day Saint history, holds a storied past, not least because of its surprising original aesthetics and a tumultuous ownership saga. When first constructed, the building did not present the pristine white façade it does today. Rather, it was designed to emulate a grand, cut-stone look, achieved through an ingenious building technique introduced by Artemus Millet. The walls, approximately two feet thick and 45 feet high, were constructed from rubble, primarily sandstone, held together with mortar. To create the desired elegant appearance, a hard plaster or stucco finish was immediately applied to the exterior. This stucco was mixed with crushed old crockery and glass, making the surface sparkle brilliantly when struck by sunlight. Mortar joints were then painted onto the walls, giving the illusion of large, meticulously cut stone blocks from a distance. Far from white, the temple was described as "blue" in the 1830s, likely a slate gray hue. Even the wooden shingles were dipped in red lead paint for preservation, and the front doors were olive green, presenting a far more colorful structure than we envision today. This vibrant exterior, sadly, was toned down over the years due to fading, extensive patching of cracks, rust streaks from iron in the sandstone, and eventually, the removal and replacement of stucco in the 1950s, leading to its brilliant white appearance only since the 1960s. The temple's initial function also differed significantly from modern Latter-day Saint temples. In Kirtland, it served as a public house for worship with a strong emphasis on spiritual and intellectual empowerment. Two-thirds of the temple was dedicated to classroom space, where people would attend worship on Sundays and school six days a week. It even housed the Kirtland High School, accommodating students from six years old through adulthood, making it the center of community life. This public access contrasted with the Nauvoo temple, where a tithe-payer's receipt was required for the baptismal font, a precursor to the modern temple recommend concept. The Kirtland Temple's ownership history is equally complex, described as "a mess". Joseph Smith sometimes owned it personally and at other times on behalf of the Church. Amid financial difficulties, it was signed over to William Marks to protect it from creditors. After Joseph Smith's death, there were attempts by various groups, including Brigham Young's followers, to sell or claim the temple. A particularly violent incident in 1838 saw dissenters storm the temple with guns and knives, aiming to take possession, only to be ejected by police amidst a chaotic scene involving a toppled stovepipe and soot. The Community of Christ's "Kirtland temple suit" in the 1880s was primarily about establishing identity as Joseph Smith ...

Pastor Greg Laurie sits down with rock icon Alice Cooper to trace his journey from shock-rock superstardom to a surrendered life in Christ. Cooper explains how the “Alice” persona was a theatrical villain—“Captain Hook” to everyone's Peter Pan—while real life offstage spiraled into alcohol and drugs. At his lowest, doctors warned he had about a month to live, and he recalls terrifying moments like seeing “blood coming out of my eyes.” Returning to the faith of his youth, he says Jesus is “everything,” the only answer fame and excess couldn't provide. Now long-sober, Cooper draws a clear line between the stage character and his Christian convictions, refuses to glamorize evil, and channels his influence into ministry work like Phoenix's The Rock Teen Center to give kids hope and purpose. He closes by urging listeners: if the Lord is knocking, answer. Jaggy and I thank you for tuning in and SHARING!

They dive into the role of schools in a world where every student might have access to unlimited knowledge in their pocket, how teachers' responsibilities may shift toward mentorship and motivation, and whether schools are even necessary when AI tutors can personalize learning better than any human. The conversation ranges from the challenges of managing devices in classrooms, to what employment might look like in a post-AI economy, to whether robots might one day replace teachers. Along the way, they touch on the social role of schools, legislative drag, the fate of universities, and even sneak in a nostalgic chat about Alice Cooper.
Typically, when I post the artists I have on the show, I also include the band they're in. For this episode, that's not necessary. Up first, The Metal God, Rob Halford, joins me to talk all things Judas Priest, and their upcoming tour with Alice Cooper. He talks to me about his relationship with the theatrical legend. The topic of Ozzy's passing came up. Rob said he couldn't believe it. He curled up in a ball and bawled his eyes out for hours. He shared some memories with Ozz and what he'd want everyone to do in his absence. Rob's a GREAT guy that I've had the privilege to speak with several times. He's one of my favorites for sure. Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden starts his solo tour today (August 22nd), so he came on to speak about fencing, the tour, and his solo career. He says the band he's playing with is solid and great to be around. He talks about playing theaters versus stadiums. Does he play new solo music for his Maiden bandmates? He answers that question, plus playing Maiden songs on the upcoming tour. He said he's playing a song they've never played live. Oh, he does answer the question about cowbell on stage....LOL Enjoy!

Ben gave us an update on Orion. He's starting to lose his appetite, which is always tough. What do you do when your dog doesn't want to eat? It's something a lot of pet owners face, and Ben's in the thick of it. On a lighter note, he's been living in a world of Clue. Playing the board game, rewatching Clue: The Movie, and even checking out Cal Poly's recent stage production where the ending changes each night depending on which solution the cast performs. (Yes, that's as fun as it sounds)—here's a behind-the-scenes look Steven has been getting some gaming in. He had a Shatterpoint rematch with Christina's husband—this time Steven lost, but it was extremely close. He also got to dive into This Is Not A Test, a post-apocalyptic skirmish game from Worlds End Publishing. Future or Now Devon started watching Dark on Netflix. It's a time travel show, and while the subtitles/dubs can get a little weird, the slow-burn mystery is “pretty good.” Each character has a younger/older actor because of the show's 33-year cycle, and by Season 3 it's seriously complex. But the real question: is it a slow burn, or is it just a slog? Devon says it's not hard to follow, but your memory has to do some heavy lifting. Devon and Steven circled back to Alien Earth. Their verdict: just alright. Some weird editing choices, decent acting, solid effects. The first episode had promise, but the second one dragged. Jury's still out. Ben came in with a much happier update: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back with “The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail.” Yes, Spock had a Sehlat—a giant bear-cat pet—and the episode absolutely nailed it. Even better, Star Trek finally won another Hugo Award for the first time since The Next Generation's finale. (Lower Decks took home two Hugos!) Here's the news And because Ben can't help himself, he also reminded us that Ryan North (yes, Dinosaur Comics Ryan North) had a hand in B to the F. Book Club This week we read “2 B R 0 2 B” by Kurt Vonnegut. It's a short satirical story set in a future where humanity has solved aging and disease—but keeps population at a strict 40 million. The catch? For every new baby, someone has to voluntarily die. Vonnegut being Vonnegut, it's absurd, bleak, and a little too close to home. You can read it free on Project Gutenberg or even watch a short film adaptation Next week we'll be reading “When It Changed” by Joanna Russ. It's the Nebula Award-winning 1972 short story about a colony called Whileaway where all the men died off 30 generations ago. When a ship of men finally arrives, they announce their intentions to “restore balance”—but the women of Whileaway have no interest in being “fixed.” It's sharp, powerful, and still incredibly relevant. You can read it here or check out this reading on YouTube.
School is back in session, and this week we're flunking out of reality with a double feature of academic anarchy: Classof 1984 (1982) and Class of 1999 (1990). Two movies, two decades apart, same message: high school is the worst.First up is Mark L. Lester's Class of 1984, starring Perry King, Timothy Van Patten, and a very young Michael J. Fox. It's a gritty tale of punks, classroom chaos, and teachers who have officially had enough. We're talking gang violence, courtroom drama, and a soundtrack by Alice Cooper that absolutely shreds. Then we crank the absurdity dial with Class of 1999, also directed by Lester, where robot teachers go full Terminator on the student body. Featuring Pam Grier, Stacy Keach rocking a mullet-rat-tail-combo, and Malcolm McDowell as the world's most exhausted principal. Basically, it's RoboCop meets after-school detention. The guy's debate whether a punk army with switchblades is scarier than Pam Grier's robot arm, if Michael J. Fox was already plotting Back to the Future during filming, and how Stacy Keach somehow looks both 40 and 400 years old at the same time.

Alice was also celebrating his latest album The Revenge of Alice Cooper which is the first with his original band in 51 years! Alice also divulges tales from his days in the Hollywood Vampires social club, holding a loaded gun on Elvis Presley and a wild story of turning down the advances of Hollywood starlet Mae West (and the rock star who actually took her up on her offer). It's another two-for-one on Talkin' Rock! Up first, drumming legend, Mike Portnoy. He and Dream Theater are about to kick off their fall tour, with a stop at the Fox Theater on September 21st. We discussed his love for the Beatles, his relationship with Neil Peart, and the multiple bands he is a part of. He shared his thoughts on the passing of Ozzy and the only time he ever met the legend. Great to interview Mike for the first time after I'd met him a few times before. Next, it's Alice Cooper band bassist, Dennis Dunaway. The Revenge of Alice Cooper is out now. He told me they had a lot of material to choose from. So much they could've recorded many more albums. He shared some Detroit stories, a stage prop that didn't work as planned, and much more. Thanks for listening!

ALICE COOPER, the Godfather of Shock Rock returns! In this riff-soaked episode, Team Derringer welcomes lifelong Alice Cooper fangirl Kathy Derringer to trace the Godfather of Shock Rock from his Phoenix-area origins through his chart-smashing heyday. IN THIS EPISODE The Band's Wild Origin Story: From Phoenix high school act to the Earwigs, then Spiders, Nazz, and finally Alice Cooper. It's a name this is as deceptively innocent as the stage antics were outrageous. Classic Albums, Shock and Awe: Early psychedelic albums Pretties for You (1969) and Easy Action (1970). Paul Derringer labels these albums “shockingly bad” but crucial to the band's formation. (To disagree with Paul, send an email to feedback@derringerdiscoveries.com – ATTENTION: PAUL)

On this episode, Jason McMaster of Dangerous Toys takes us behind the scenes of the band's 1989 hit “Scared,” a track born from fear, adrenaline, and a deep love for theatrical rock. Inspired by Alice Cooper and crafted in a quirky home studio setting, “Scared” blends personal storytelling with pounding percussion and a structure that wastes no time getting to the hook. Jason shares how the lyrics were shaped by real-life anxieties, how spontaneous moments and misheard lines sometimes added unexpected charm, and how collaboration played a key role in bringing the song to life. Along the way, he and Chris reflect on the nostalgic glory of late '80s rock, the emotional weight that music can carry, and what keeps the creative fire burning decades later.
