Ever heard of Gary Heidnik? Pop culture wise, he's made a much bigger impact than most murderers, but few seem to know his story. This literal genius, who was also schizophrenic, joined the army, became a nurse, made hundreds of thousands of dollars in the stock market, crushed whatever college courses he took, formed his own successful church, and dug out a pit in his basement to store women he'd kidnapped. Women he raped in an attempt to impregnate them, so that their mixed-race babies would help end racism and bring peace to the world! It is March 25, 1987, and police are about to enter a run-down home on North Marshall Street. Even though officers were told what they were about to encounter, there was no way anyone could ever prepare for what they saw. The smell hit them first before they even got into the residence. Officers were gagging as they made their way inside, trying desperately to concentrate on the task at hand. A sign outside the home indicated that it was a place of worship, claiming to be the United Church of the Ministries of God, but it was far from that: it was a severely demented man's torture chamber. In our annual Halloween episode, we discuss Dennis Depue, the inspiration for the creature in Jeepers Creepers. Like Depue, there have been many real-life cold-blooded killers who have inspired horror movies. These include Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, Gary Heidnik, John Wayne Gacy, and Ronald Defeo Jr., to name a few. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss Dennis Depue, a man who blamed his ex-wife for all his troubles. If there was a common theme in his life, nothing was his fault. He blamed his ex-wife Marilynn for leaving him and for his children siding with their mother. It culminated in 1990 when Dennis murdered Marilynn and dumped her body off the side of the road. But, it just so happened that a couple out for a drive saw him and phoned it into police as suspicious. In the 1980s, Gary Heidnik ran a church out of his home in Philadelphia with fifty devout congregants professing their unwavering loyalty. Flaunting multiple flashy cars and a considerable bank account accumulated through the contributions of his vulnerable devotees, this spiritual leader ensured that all adherents remained committed to his teachings and, crucially, perpetually subordinate. However, it was the tragic plight of a group of enslaved women kept in Heidnik's basement beneath his church that would ultimately catapult this despicable individual into infamy, and would later serve as the perverse inspiration behind the notorious cinematic character Buffalo Bill from "The Silence of the Lambs." Heidnik subjected his female captives to the horrors of ongoing sexual enslavement, severe physical abuse, and twisted psychological torment. If you've seen the literal horror movie based on this tragic case, you might believe you are prepared for the extent of the moral corruption and depravity at play. However, we urge you to exercise discretion while listening, as the gruesome and heartbreaking acts addressed in this episode surpass any portrayal a Hollywood production could possibly convey. In part 2 of our story on the intelligent and evil "Monster Preacher" Gary Heidnik, we see the events that transpire in a true basement of horrors. A series of kidnappings is followed by terrible physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, and that does not even count the atrocities performed inside the hand-dug hole in the basement floor. Beware what's cooking in the kitchen, because it may not actually be pot roast. We apologize for the delay, Jenn lost her father to a terminal illness this past week. "It puts the lotion on its skin"... everyone knows the chilling words of fictional serial killer Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb; some people may even know that his modus operandi was based on the traits of real serial killers. The least known of this murderous mash-up was an intelligent, manipulative, and eccentric monster named Gary Heidnik. With a very flavorful soup filled with childhood trauma, military service, religious cults, and cookies shoved down the throat by the devil himself, part one of his story is just as eclectic and deviant as the very thing he helped inspire. Gene and cohost Tim Swartz are joined by Maxim W. Furek on a fascinating pop culture and paranormal journey. He considers himself a student of the paranormal and has explored and published numerous articles on what some have called “The Coal Region Hoodoo.” With “Coal Region Hoodoo: Paranormal Tales from Inside the Pit,” Furek continues his sociological exploration of high strangeness inside the Pennsylvania wormhole that gave birth to “The Night of the Living Dead,” “The Blob,” and “The Philadelphia Experiment.” His book takes us beyond the netherworlds of Centralia, Sheppton, Chestnut Ridge, and The Pennhurst Asylum. It looks into the eyes of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren and the twisted souls of serial killer Gary Heidnik and controversial artist and experiencer Richard S. Shaver, while exploring the preternatural secrets of Bigfoot, cryptids, Kecksburg and other strange events.
In the mid-1980s, Gary Heidnik was capturing women and keeping them as prisoners in his torture cellar in Philadelphia, PA. He was the inspiration for the Buffalo Bill character in the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs. He was executed in 1999 and the last execution Pennsylvania has had since then.
This week is another true-crime rabbit hole, as we discuss the strange and somewhat unexplainable tales of the murderers Gary Heidnik and Harrison Graham -- two men that captured and killed women in their North Philly homes at the same times between 1986-87. Heidnik was not only some of the "inspiration" for Buffalo Bill in the Silence of the Lambs, but he was also dubbed the "Monster Preacher", owed to the fact that he actually held weekly church sermons at the same house where several women were imprisoned in his basement. There was at least one known congregation member that even helped Heidnik with his tortures. Graham was a mentally-handicapped drug addict living in the projects of North Philly, around an area that was known for its heavy drug trafficking. The community knew Graham for his childlike and somewhat unpredictable behavior, constantly carrying around a Cookie Monster hand-puppet and talking to the children of the neighborhood among other strange things. This man eventually, through circumstances never well understood, began abducting and murdering women from the neighborhood, in order to keep them in the second bedroom of his apartment as a sort of disturbing mausoleum. Join me as we discuss the stories of these men further, including their crimes, arrests and states-of-mind. What the hell was going on here in these Philly Houses of Horror? Just pure coincidence? There was absolutely no evidence ever found to even suggest that these two men knew anything about each other, so where does this leave us? Does hate float? Gary Heidnik was one of the worst of the worst. At his height, in Philadelphia, he would kidnap women and keep them chained in his basement, subject to horrific abuse for months. Or worst of all, "the Hole". Happy Re-New Year! That's right, we're starting the year over, and trying again. And it just so happens that we're starting off with a really dark episode: cue all the content warnings. This week, Hannah tells Katy about Gary Heidnik, the serial kidnapper/rapist who inspired one of Hollywood's most infamous villains. This is a story full of red flags, heroic women, and a subpar police investigation. The girls have their comfort snacks for this one (homemade mac and cheese and chocolate covered pretzels), and we suggest you do the same. Content warnings: sexual assault, suicide/mental health, cannibalism, torture, etc. Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/gary-heidnikhttps://www.phillymag.com/news/2007/07/23/inside-the-house-of-heidnik/https://www.truecrimeedition.com/post/gary-heidnikhttps://murderpedia.org/male.H/h1/heidnik-gary.htmhttps://www.oxygen.com/monster-preacher/crime-news/monster-preacher-what-happened-to-gary-heidnikhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-9215799/Victims-monster-preacher-raped-tortured-reveal-escaped.htmlhttps://6abc.com/philadelphia-crime-mass-murder-serial-killer/3429565/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_M._HeidnikSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!
