You want more? YOU GOT IT! Plenty of tangents, arts and crafts, and more swear words than usual make this bonus episode go to eleven (apologies to Nigel Tufnel). Further One Crazy Summer discussion, plus we talk about synthesizers, MIDI, PageMaker, organizing your movies nicely on shelves, George Clooney's Up in the Air, packing and moving, murals, paint and emotion, beer can designs, sketchbooks versus laptops, NYC's Strand Book Store, Bill Murray's brother Joel, and if you listen closely you'll hear Jason's pugs barking in the background every so often.
Hello, Cleveland! This week, Producer Mike continues his quest to make Discord & Rhyme more metal by turning it up to 11 with an episode on England's loudest band, Spinal Tap. The fictional Spinal Tap consists of guitarists David St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel, bassist Derek Smalls, and a series of cursed drummers, whose misadventures are chronicled in the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. The real Spinal Tap consists of Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer, three exceptionally gifted comedians who know what makes metal tick and are very smart at playing dumb. And that extends to the movie's soundtrack, whose songs walk the line between sophisticated songwriting and sounding like they could conceivably have been written by three boneheads. Because why waste good music on a brain?Cohosts: Mike DeFabio, Rich Bunnell, John McFerrinComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/146-spinal-tap-this-is-spinal-tap-1984Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpodPete and the Escapologists - Chronicles of a Dead End: https://peteescapologists.bandcamp.com/album/chronicles-of-a-dead-end
Content warning: This episode contains discussion of sexual violence (22:45–24:55). In this episode we welcome the excellent Barbara Ellen, who joins us on Zoom all the way from... well, the other side of London, actually. (It's a long story.) Barbara talks us through her illustrious writing career from zines such as her own Wax Lyrical and Ooh Gary, Gary (a footie zine dedicated entirely to one G. Lineker, Esq.) via ZigZag (in its Goth phase) to the golden decade she spent in the pages and offices of the NME. Always highly amusing in print, our guest is no less hilarious in (virtual) person – especially when recalling her 1987 interview with Guns N' Roses. But Barbara is also capable of reverence and seriousness, not least when speaking of the revelatory interview Madonna granted her in 1995. It's back to belly-laughs when we turn our attention to news of the planned sequel to This is Spinal Tap. A clip from Gavin Martin's 2009 audio interview with Tap axeman Nigel Tufnel (a.k.a. the 4th Baron Haden-Guest) has us all in stitches as we debate the wisdom or otherwise of attempting Spinal Tap 2. Another audio clip – of the late Genesis P-Orridge explaining why Santa Claus was originally a shaman – is almost as funny. After Mark quotes from interviews with Janis Joplin, Neneh Cherry and Thom Yorke, Barney cites splendid conversations with Beatles boffin Mark Lewisohn and power-balladeering songsmith Diane Warren. Finally, Jasper concludes the episode with his thoughts on Sophie Ellis-Bextor, muzak and a Hip Hop anniversary. Many thanks to special guest Barbara Ellen. Pieces discussed: Guns N' Roses, The NME, Madonna, Goldberg on Spinal Tap, Staunton on Spinal Tap, Genesis P-Orridge audio, Essra Mohawk by Michael Watts, Essra Mohawk by Max Bell, Janis Joplin, Lester Bangs, Neneh Cherry, Thom Yorke, Mark Lewisohn on the Beatles, Dianne Warren, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Elevator Muzak and 40 years of Hip Hop.
Dixon Dedman, founder of 2XO - "Two Times Oak" Whiskey, joins us today to explain why his award-winning blends will, in the words of Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel, "Take it to Eleven!" "Two Times Oak" is a blending process Dixon pioneered, where he re-barrels his hand-selected aged whiskey into new charred oak barrels. The result is intense wood notes and extraordinarily rich, complex flavors. Will these blends take it to 10? Well, sure. But sometimes you need.. "one more!" What makes 2XO 'American Oak' Special: The first of the "Oak" series with an innovative double oak technique. Dixon introduces additional charred oak to barrels with a moderate amount of rye in the mashbill. American Oak moves from sweet, rich butterscotch on the front, to savory roasted nutty notes in the middle, finishing with a lingering mild spice. It is very approachable and perfect for cocktails. Dixon Dedman has been turning heads for years as a blender using innovative techniques for adding flavor and complexity to his robust bourbon and rye blends. Episode One Hundred and Fifty-Two: The Flying Scissors (2009)Killing Gunther (2017)Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?Marty DiBergi: I don't know.Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?Nigel Tufnel: ...These go to eleven.-- This is Spinal Tap (1984)Logo design by: https://www.fiverr.com/ideahitsIntro voiceover by: https://www.youtube.com/kevincrockerheyjameswatchthis@gmail.com

Jeff Beck terrifies guitarists everywhere. He made sounds no one else could fathom, played the instrument in ways no one else could copy and took the electric guitar in directions no one saw coming. He may or may not have been the influence for Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel. Either way, he remains a huge influence on anyone who every picked up an electric guitar. Oh, and he fixed hot rods too.

First Act is a brand that almost nobody associates with a high quality instrument. We are used to seeing them in the Walmart toy section, not in the hands of professional touring musicians. But at some point in the mid-2000s First Act created their own Custom Shop. These instruments went into the hands of some very popular musicians of the era, and are experiencing a serious resurgence all these years later. Kelly Butler was a builder at the Gibson Custom Shop and was instrumental in creating the First Act Custom Shop instruments, and now owns his own brand K. Butler Guitars. I brought him on the podcast to tell the story, and it is an extremely interesting tale! We've got John Mayer, Slash, and even Nigel Tufnel (of Spinal Tap fame) waved into this one. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! And don't forget, we are giving a Gibson SG away and there are just a few days left to enter. Head over to Stringjoy.com to check that out. In this week's installment of how to lose friends and disappoint people, we're talking about the independent platform media culture, mostly of the male persuasion. So, yes. Much of this will drip with irony as I, a white male with a small platform, attempt to mansplain how to think about other men with platforms. Our three main subjects today have been in the news for various reasons. Dave Chappelle, Jon Stewart and Joe Rogan. These three have a combined audience reach that rivals any major network, which should challenge our assumptions of what defines the “mainstream media” these days. In this Quickie we dissect the changing media landscape, the nature of punditry and who has the power and responsibility in the relationship between platform and audience. -- If you like #UNFTR, please leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts: unftr.com/rate and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at @UNFTRpod. This movie is so monumentally influential that whether you've seen it or not, you've likely seen a comedy or two that were influenced by it. And yet, this film is a cult classic and not the up-front and center movie that it needs to be for any fan of modern comedy. This is Spinal Tap is rated R and was released on March 2, 1984 The film features the comedic talents of Rob Reiner as Marty DiBergi, Michael McKean as David St. Hubbins, Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel, and Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls. Settle in and relax as today we talk about Mayhem, the Norwegian death metal band that lived up to their name, whether it was intentional or not. They were the first to use the black & white corpse paint for their shows...not like those glam-rockers in KISS, or the theatrical effect like Alice Cooper. They wanted to make ugly sounding music and look grotesque while they shocked the audience with impaled pig heads and self-mutilation, paving the way for Dimmu Borgir, Watain, Cradle of Filth and Marilyn Manson, years before most of them took the stage. Amidst all the black, spike-studded leather and jackbooted kids with long hair with nothing better to do than scream into a microphone and bang their heads, there was suicide, murder, and plots of terrorism. If you were to ask Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap what he thought of Mayhem and how black these dudes were, he'd say "none...none more black." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message
Apologies to Nigel Tufnel for stealing his line and if you don’t get the title, then please go watch the classic movie This Is Spinal Tap. To quote David St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel, "It's such a fine line between stupid and clever." In this episode, Michael and Rob are joined by Sue London and Jeff Somogyi to test that line by workshopping a movie based on whatever was trending on Twitter at the time.

Ken Nordine - Yellow (1966) Colors is a "word jazz" album by voice-over and recording artist Ken Nordine. It was commissioned by the Fuller Paint Company to write radio advertisement spots, but after a few commercials became popular, it evolved to become an album of 34 songs. Each track personifies a different color or hue. Colors (1966) began as a short-lived series of radio commercials written and voiced at the behest of the Fuller Paint Company. The spots ran as scheduled; however, at the end of the campaign listeners began calling radio stations to request they be rebroadcast. Once word got back to Nordine, he rewrote the scripts -- sans sponsor of course -- and composed a few new hues to the initial order of ten. To accompany these quirky paeans, Nordine wisely chose the multi-talented Dick Campbell as his musical director. Campbell had contributed to the broadcast ads, providing apt sonic representations of Nordine's oft unconventional literal interpretations of a predominantly visual medium. Each selection runs roughly 90 seconds and represents a specific shade -- most of which are variations of those found on the aforementioned primary spectrum. Brother Theodore - Introduction & Bernice (1959) Influential Jewish German-American cult comedian whose monologue style was often referred to as "stand-up tragedy." His early recordings were often under the name Theodore prior to Merv Griffin giving him the title "Brother." Well-known for television and film appearances into the 1990s, including the variety programs of Griffin, David Letterman, Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, and Joey Bishop. What kind of Freudian nightmare is it that he is one of the two things I recall about the porn movie Gums? National Lampoon - Deteriorata (1972) Written by Tony Hendra. He was Spinal Tap's manager. The English fellow. Music by Christopher Guest (who played Nigel Tufnel) and sung by Melissa Manchester, who had big hits later in the decade with "Don't Cry Out Loud" and "You Should Hear How She Talks About You". Ken Nordine - Burgundy (1966) The Last Poets - E Plurbus Unum (1972) Ken Nordine - Green (1966) Jack Palance - Black Jack County Chain (1970) Ken Nordine - Olive (1966) Brother Theodore - Willow Landscape (1959) Ken Nordine - Beige (1966) The Last Poets - Niggers are Scared of Revolution (1972) Ken Nordine - Maroon (1966) Brother Theodore - Curse of the Toad (1959) Ken Nordine - Ecru (1966) Ken Nordine - Scratch (1979) Ken Nordine - Chartreuse (1966) James Brown - King Heroin (1972) Ken Nordine - Turquoise (1966) C W McCall - Four Wheel Drive (1975) From that Wikipedia: In 1973, while working as a creative director for Bozell & Jacobs, an Omaha, Nebraska, advertising agency, Fries created a Clio Award-winning (1974) television advertising campaign advertising Old Home Bread for the Metz Baking Company. The advertisements featured a truck driver named C. W. McCall, who was played by Dallas, Texas, actor Jim Finlayson. The waitress named Mavis Davis was played by Dallas actress Jean McBride Capps. The commercial's success led to songs such as "Old Home Filler-Up an' Keep on a-Truckin' Café", "Wolf Creek Pass" and "Black Bear Road". Fries wrote the lyrics and sang while Chip Davis, later of Mannheim Steamroller, wrote the music. McCall is best known for the 1976 #1 hit song "Convoy", which came at the peak of the CB fad in the United States. It sold over two million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in December 1975. Though McCall is not a one-hit wonder, "Convoy" has since become his signature song. McCall first charted the song "Wolf Creek Pass", which reached #40 on the U.S. pop top 40 in 1975. At least three other songs reached Billboard's pop Hot 100, including "Old Home Filler-Up an' Keep on a-Truckin' Cafe", "'Round the World with the Rubber Duck" (a pirate-flavored sequel to "Convoy"), as well as the environmentally-oriented "There Won't Be No Country Music (There Won't Be No Rock 'n' Roll)". A dozen McCall songs appeared in Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, including the sentimental "Roses for Mama" (1977). Ken Nordine - White (1966) The Last Poets - Mean Machine (1971) Ken Nordine - Flesh (1966) King Crimson - Elephant Talk (Live) (1984) Ken Nordine - Azure (1966) The Red Shadow - Understanding Marx (1975) Ken Nordine - Puce (1966) The Last Poets - The White Man’s Got a God Complex (1971) Ken Nordine - Magenta (1966) Velvet Underground - The Gift (1968) The Residents - Give It To Someone Else (1980) Annette Peacock - Succubus (1979) Godley and Creme - Ready For Ralph (1981)
Happy 11-11! t's Nigel Tufnel Day! If you've seen Spinal Tap, you know that D-minor is the saddest of all keys. You also know that Nigel didn't know the difference between inches and feet, much like the ancient Delians didn't know the difference between length and volume. The Delian Problem, also known as Doubling the Cube, provides a problem that is impossible to solve. This fun problem is definitely worth tackling and learning more about! If you want to learn more about the Delian Problem, please visit me at www.MathScienceHistory.com where I provide links to a more thorough explanation, as well as to the infamous Stonehenge scene that I'm talking about. Until next week, Happy Nigel Tufnel Day! Thanks for listening! - Gabrielle Birchak
For this edition of the Paltrocast, Darren spoke with some inspiring and very-entertaining from very different walks of life, Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls, Lacuna Coil frontman Cristina Scabbia, and Everclear founder Art Alexakis. All three have new albums and plenty of touring ahead.Points of discussion include touring, swimming, solo albums, Century Media Records, the future of the Summerland tour, and what Spinal Tap co-founders David St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel are currently up to.

Bird Essay 10 October 2019 I wrote a verse in this specifically for Brian. He shares way more on our podcast than I'm comfortable with so I'll share this about my buddy and coproducer Brian Lutz. He's been going through a country song of a stretch in his life. These words are specifically for him: "Inside your crumbled world know you're not alone / Outside the insular lonely people roam / dreamers and malcontents and rebels scared to win." Nothing ever works out according to plan. That's what ol' Lennon was saying in "Beautiful Boy:" "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." Initially this song grew out of a piano jam we did in Forgotten Sons in the 80s. C major. That's a dead give away. It was always in the Big Opera and then when we set about digitizing that motherfucker it wasn't. I tend to fall into the dark side of my personality and sometimes write overtly positive songs. Maybe as a self pep talk? Maybe I'm trying to talk my way into a good mood. Ugh. I don't know. I'm in the cavernous abyss right now that's for sure. THIS version of this song, you see, uh. Who cares. Whatever, right? Fuck. I had a lot of fun tossing around the word "ennui." I like how it sounds. I like that it's French. The Gauls and the Goths were epic awesomeness, am I right? Yo check out my keyboard wizardry on this'n. The Hammond B3 at the end, I couldn't do the right and left hand parts at the same time! Hah! I really really like C-major. It's jaunty. It's the opposite of Nigel Tufnel's the saddest of all keys. Here's some examples of the vibe of C major. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "The Ballad Of Curtis Lowe." You know what else is in C-major? "Imagine." "The Card Cheat" off of LONDON CALLING is C major. Shit, yo. I'm spinning muh goddamn wheels! Tell you what, friends, the gears are most definitely engaged. C and F. Love them. LOVE EM! I have existential angst at the moment. I have it to the point where I feel as if I don't deserve it. As if I haven't EARNED mine own angst! I'll tell you what, folks. I had the opportunity to work with a bunch of men and women from the post Gen X generations. Here's the reality, fellow middle age dorks and dorkettes. We fucked everything up good for today's young-ins. We've poisoned the land. We've destroyed the ecosystem. We've modified the earth so that we are no longer a part of it. I say it constantly, right? Team Thanos every day and twice on Sunday. Our party was way more intense than that of the Baby Boomers. They were naive little sissy-pants jag-offs. We knew full well that the heart that beats in the center of the party is dark. It has consequences (*PLUG* check out the song "Consequence" from TRAVELOGUE IV!). We were fucking and getting fucked up in college. Today's youths are assuming mountains of debt. A good trend I've seen is that the next ones ain't to keen on breeding. I love that. There are far too many human beings on Earth. I'll tell you why there's the greatest wealth disparity in the US since the 1920s. It all started with my homeboy Ronald Reagan saying "more government can't solve the problem. Government IS the problem." He was right. Governmental bureaucracy was bloated and self sustaining. It was an AI. Scaling back was the right thing to do. But now we need another course correction. The 1950s was a pretty good era economically. We ruled the world through normal traditional war ways and through culture. This was when it crystalized for me. It was the stimulus package passed by our gubmint in 2017. All the tax cuts for rich folk and for mega businesses are forever whereas the ones for working stiffs are temporary. It pains me to say this but the Democrats are the more fiscally responsible party. How the fuck did that happen? They try to at least pay for a portion of what their abdicating. Not the Republicans. Dammit. I was 100% down with the GOP's obsession with fiscal responsibility during 44's presidency. And then they passed that stupid fucking tax cut and exploded the deficit. There's ANOTHER way we're fucking the next generations. There you go, guys. Have fun cleaning up our shitstorm! We fucking suck.
Nigel Tufnel may like his amp volume turned up to 11, but in the 2018 film, Mandy, Nic Cage cranks the insanity beyond that number and breaks the knob. In this episode, Jim and Teal pay homage to two movie legends, composer Michel Legrand, and character actor Dick Miller. After, Jim and Teal focus their attentions on the revenge genre, and one of its most extreme examples, Mandy. Mandy may not be for everyone, but for fans of those 80s midnight cult films, this one could be your next obsession. Jim and Teal carefully thread the needle to avoid major spoilers, but they will make sure to guide you on a safe path on how to view this insane exercise in psychedelic movie mayhem!

Nigel Tufnel, lead guitarist of the band Spinal Tap, modified his amplifier for a higher energy state. Something that he could go to that was louder than the loudest, for when "10" wouldn't do. His amplifier goes up to "11." And he needs it for that special moment in the song "Hell Hole," I guess. Philip Moriarty is the guest for this episode of Ikonokast. The interview is a wide-ranging tour of education in the US and the UK, where Professor Moriarty teaches physics and is delighted on the first day of term to see all of the t-shirts with the names of metal bands, as the students file into class. Molecules Music depends on waves. Wave functions depend on, um, waves, too. So music and quantum physics are naturally related in form, if not always function. The humanities and science are not so easily separated. In Moriarty's book and in this podcast the two are firmly forged. Kevin Doxzen is a science communications specialist at the Innovative Genomics Institute in Berkeley, CA, associated with Dr. Jennifer Doudna. The Institute specializes in gene editing using CRISPR/Cas. The CRISPR/Cas system evolved as a bacterial defense against virus attack, but it has been exploited primarily to manipulate the genomes of eukaryotes. CRISPR/Cas has already revolutionized gene editing, and has led to the creation of a large number of modified animals, which has led to ethical questions about human genome manipulation. Dr. Doxzen talks about how CRISPR/Cas evolved, the various applications that is has been used for, some of the controversies associated with its use, and its further potential to improve human health. The microCase for listeners to solve is about Nigel Tufnel, an aging rocker with a wild lifestyle who comes down with a life-threatening disease after going fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Participants: Karl Klose, Ph.D. (UTSA) Kevin Doxzen, Ph.D. (Innovative Genomics Institute/U.C. Berkeley) Janakiram Seshu, Ph.D. (UTSA) Jesus Romo (UTSA)
Thirty four years after the world was introduced to Spinal Tap, you can still pull out a quote from their rockumentary and everyone knows who you're talking about. Spinal Tap reflected the heavy bands at the time; ask any artist still making music today, and the adventures and conversations on screen cut painfully close to the bone. Nigel Tufnel, David St Hubbins and Derek Smalls were, and are, living legends. When I discovered Derek Smalls was releasing his first ever solo album, and that he'd been streaming my radio show from the Northern Hemisphere, the opportunity was too good to pass up. I asked Derek to Take 5. Across five choices, we went lateral, literal, and multi-levelled. Mainly, I just tried to keep up. See if you can, too. Paul Shaffer and The World's Most Dangerous Band – ‘I Don't Need No Doctor (ft. Valerie Simpson and Felicia Collins)' Gregory Isaacs – ‘Night Nurse' Emerson, Lake & Palmer – ‘Brain Salad Surgery' Steely Dan – ‘Doctor Wu' Little Feat – ‘Rock And Roll Doctor'

This mockumentary follows the elderly David St. Hubbins who has reformed the Tap (with the help of some young gun musicians) and is planning a world tour. When the film crew locates former Spinal Tap members Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls and inadvertently breaks the news that David has reformed without them, they decide to form a rival Tap and hilarity ensues.
