In this episode of Disturb Me, Chris and Meg trade two stories that prove reality can be far more terrifying than fiction.Chris dives into the horrifying life of Albert Fish, a serial killer and cannibal whose crimes shocked early 20th-century New York.Meg counters with the eerie unsolved case of the Hinterkaifeck murders, where an entire family was slaughtered on their remote German farm, leaving a mystery that still lingers today.Together, these stories reveal how horror often hides in plain sight — in quiet houses, in ordinary lives, and in the shadows of history.https://www.disturbmepodcast.com/ Have a story you think will creep us out?

Step back onto the frozen soil of Hinterkaifeck, where a killer didn't just murder a family, he moved in. In Part 2, we rewind the scene one last time, then push deeper: the footsteps that came from the woods and never went back, the attic noises, the missing keys… and a methodical slaughter carried out in silence. We follow the town's favorite suspect, Lorenz Schlittenbauer, and then widen the circle. Karl Gabriel the “dead” husband, the Gump brothers, the Thalers, and the transatlantic boogeyman Paul Mueller. Autopsies in the barnyard, chores done by the killer, warm ashes in the hearth. This is the part where folklore swallows fact and the case refuses to die. Citizens of the Milky Way, prepare yourselves for The Shadow Over Hinterkaifeck: Part Two!
Spring in Bavaria — soft hills, quiet cows, the sleepy days of a farm world nobody ever writes about. But Hinterkaifeck was already rotten to the roots long before the first skull cracked open in the hay. Foul rumors, missing keys, footsteps in the attic, shadows in the woods — the whole place felt like a bad dream pretending to be normal life. Then, one cold night in 1922, somebody lured the Gruber family out one by one, killed them with farm tools, and stayed. Slept in their beds. Fed the cows. Kept the fire burning while six bodies cooled a few feet away. Part one drags you back to that doomed little farm, through gossip thick as mud, neighbors who looked the other way, and a crime scene so disturbing its still discussed over a century later. This isn't just murder — It's the kind of story that crawls under your skin and never leaves. Citizens of the Milky Way, prepare yourselves for The Shadow Over Hinterkaifeck: Part One! Lindsay is joined by Nora Koeppel, the daughter of author Adolf J. Koeppel to discuss his book, “The Lark's Call,” the gripping crime novel based on the Hinterkaifeck murders. Trigger Warning: This episode discusses incest. Underneath this crucifix, a peasant family of five and their maid lie in a family grave. All of them had their skulls smashed in. The extremely brutal murderer did not even stop at Josef, who was only two and a half years old. He killed the boy with a single blow through the roof of the pram. The criminal police assumed a sixfold robbery-murder, although all the money was left behind. The neighbours of the murdered family, however, suspected a man from their village of having committed the heinous act. He wanted to marry the beautiful farmer's daughter, but her father did not allow it. Did that man kill the whole family out of revenge, or did someone else have a dirty hand in it? Someone who was so close to the murdered family that no one paid any attention to him... Become a member on Buy Me A Coffee for as little as $1/month to support the show. In April of 1922, neighbors of the Gruber-Gabriel family stumbled upon a grizzly scene on a remote farmstead near Gröbern, Bavaria called Hinterkaifeck. They found all 6 residents - Andreas and Cäzilia Gruber, their daughter Viktoria, her children Cäzilia and Josef, and their maid Maria Baumgartner - bludgeoned to death with a farm tool. When police began their investigation they realized something incredibly eerie - the killer had remained on the property for several days after the murder, feeding the farm animals and using the kitchen, before vanishing without a trace. The investigation would lead to wild speculation about family secrets and local suspects, but the case remains unsolved, cementing it as one of Germany's most chilling true crime mysteries. On March 31st, 1922, on a cold, snowy, and quiet night in Germany, at a small unassuming farm roughly an hour's drive north of Munich, six gruesome axe murders were committed after various people in the home had been hearing strange noises coming from the attic for months. IN THIS EPISODE: Is it true that Jayne Mansfield's death was caused by a curse? (The Tragic Death and Haunting of Jayne Mansfield) *** In 1966 over 300 children and staff from a Melbourne school reportedly witnessed multiple UFOs silently flying through the sky before landing in a nearby field. So why are we only learning of it now, more than 50 years later? (300 Children Saw a UFO) *** We've all heard horror stories of people being buried alive. It's become a trope of television and film. But for Barbara Mackle, it was very real - and three days of a pure nightmare. (Barbara Mackle Was Buried Alive) *** Funerals can bring out the worst in some people, especially family members. (Window View) *** It is considered Germany's most famous and unsolved crime. What happened on the Hinterkaifeck homestead in 1922? No one knows, but there is a theory. Yet even the theory is a mystery, as no one will discuss it. *** A mother is awakened by her son, only it's not her son. *** The concept of creating life from nothing has been with us, literally, from the beginning, when God created Adam in the book of Genesis. Since then though, creating life from non-living matter has been limited to stories of fiction. Or has it? A man by the name of Andrew Cross may have actually done it, and even repeated it in a laboratory for others to see. If this is true, what happened? Why can't we replicate his results now, almost 200 years later? *** He was so vicious, even he admitted that he was pure evil. But although serial killer Sean Vincent Gillis may readily have confessed to his crimes, and even perhaps expressed some genuine remorse, the details of his murders will surely leave you thinking that he was nothing but pure evil indeed. *** How did the tooth fairy come into being? Such a strange little sprite most assuredly has just as strange of a history. *** A 911 call was placed, and the person who made the call wasn't just reporting a murder; he also admitted to it. But his excuse is beyond bizarre.SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“The Death and Haunting of Jayne Mansfield” by Troy Taylor: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/n7bdza8“Barbara Mackle Was Buried Alive” by Kara Goldfarb: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/u4p5zx4r“The UFO Seen By 300 Children” by Alley Foster: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/td3vewne“Window View” written by Maggie: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/3yhc3rw9(Unfortunately, info for the rest of the stories in this episode has been lost due to a computer crash.
