Dave is like nobody you've ever met. Or maybe you have, but didn't know it. Thrown out of his home at 14, he used his wits, charm and determination to become one of the most successful drug dealers in Canada. But, after the birth of his son, he knew he had to make one last big score before getting out of the game. So, he became an undercover police agent, the first one whose life wasn't in danger.Jerry Langton, one of Canada's best known crime authors, follows Dave's incredible trip while exposing the inner workings of the Canadian drug trade, weapons trade, crime organizations, police investigations and judicial system. Dave became as the president of a major biker gang chapter, robbed a powerful Russian gangster, occupied a maximum-security prison cell next to the notorious Paul Bernardo, struggled to find ways to hide all of his cash, drove cars worth as much as a suburban house without ever having a license and frequently taunted those in law enforcement who never found a way to shut down his drug business. The most incredible part of the whole story is that all of it was happening right under the noses of frustrated police services and naive neighbors. From a trip to Home Depot to pick up burglary tools to the purchase of a grenade launcher powerful enough to take down a large house, Dave plied his trade with almost total impunity.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. In "Amelia Porter", a bunch of dumb shit happens and the Criminal Minds crew loosely adapts the real life horrific crimes of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Poorly, of course. More importantly, though, Hotch cut those strings loose and is now a swinging bachelor, ready to get down and fuck. All because Beth's actress was gonna be on Prodigal Son or something.
Since the beginning of the RGS our go-to guest on issues concerning the Canadian justice system, Correctional Service Canada and the Parole Board of Canada has been a former Alberta crown attorney, executive director of the Canadian Police Association, senior policy advisor to a federal Minister of Public Safety, Scott Newark. In the 90's this included so-called "Club Fed" prisons like Ferndale in B.C. which included a 9 hole golf course inmates were allowed to use. In recent years the Canadian justice system has come under significant criticism for the easy (instant) parole granted dangerous individuals, for the moving of convicted serial rapist, kidnapper and murderer Paul Bernardo from a maximum to medium-security prison. We took our program inside two federal prisons, Joyceville and Warkarth, for live shows with the inmates committees. At Joyceville, we asked the inmates committee what would happen to Clifford Olson, British Columbia serial child/youth murderer if he were transferred into the general population of the prison, as Olson had been requesting. The chairman of the committee said bluntly "he would be murdered." Americans repeatedly told us how grateful they were Canadians had come to share the day with them. RGS producer Rick Zamperin and I walked the perimeter of St. Paul's Chapel, across the street from where the World Trade Center buildings had stood. St. Paul's was undamaged in the terror attack and thousands of people had placed memorial messages on the iron fence surrounding the chapel. One in particular remains seared in memory. A piece of cardboard on which, in a child's writing, were the words "I love you Daddy." - Rick decided to engage on his adventures in NYC where there was concern of a possible repeat terror attack. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's plan to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico is causing leaders here to come out strongly. The prime minister says he had a “good call” with Trump. But the premiers are worried, and so are farmers, energy workers, exporters and others who watch the relationship closely or depend on trade. Trump says he wants to combat drugs and illegal immigration, but the tariffs are likely to punish the U.S. too. And: Israel's prime minister is supporting a ceasefire deal in Lebanon. The ceasefire is expected to take effect at 4 a.m. local time Wednesday. Netanyahu says this ceasefire — which will mean an end to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah — will allow Israel to focus on fighting Hamas and Iran, and on freeing Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Lebanon's prime minister has also welcomed the deal.Plus: An election in Nova Scotia, Paul Bernardo parole hearing, a vote on coal mining in Crowsnest Pass, and more.
Greg Brady focused in on acrimony coming out of Ottawa. Prime Minister Trudeau is being accused of defending a less than truthful MP, masquerading as an Indigenous politician, when the PM dismissed an honest, ethical MP with loads of integrity, who actually is Indigenous...simply because she wouldn't defend the PM's shady dealings. Next, Michael Barrett, Conservative MP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, joins us to discuss the drama in Ottawa. And we also lament the state of our justice system when it comes to Canada's most notorious serial killer Paul Bernardo. Lastly, David Miller, former Toronto mayor. He's here to discuss his recent appointment by the NDP to craft a New Deal for municipalities. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
TUNE INTO THE TOWN: ROAD SAFETY AND BICYCLE LANES Jane Brown is filling in for Libby Znaimer today. She is joined by Karen Stintz, a Conservative Party of Canada Candidate for Eglinton-Lawrence, a former Toronto City Councillor, Councillor James Pasternak of Ward 6 York Centre and Councillor Stephen Holyday of Ward 2 Etobicoke Centre. Today: a discussion about road safety and bicycle lanes in Toronto, and the Ontario NDP enlist former Toronto Mayor David Miller as a "special advisor" to their leader Marit Stiles "on crafting a New Deal for municipalities" according to the Ontario NDP press release. THE UPCOMING PAUL BERNARDO PAROLE HEARING Jane Brown is joined by Ari Goldkind, a criminal defence lawyer based in Toronto. Paul Bernardo has a parole hearing coming up on November 26th. We found out late last night, the Parole Board of Canada is working with the families of Kristen French and Lesley Mahaffey to appear in person at Paul Bernardo's next parole hearing on Tuesday after earlier saying they could not do so related to security concerns. REACTION TO PM JUSTIN TRUDEAU ANNOUNCEMENT ON TEMPORARY HST + GST RELIEF Jane Brown is joined by Muhammad Ali, Liberal Strategist and a Vice President with Crestview Strategy in Ottawa and Tom Parkin, Publisher of the "Data Shows" newsletter. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today that his government plans to temporarily lift the federal sales tax off a number of items just in time for Christmas and send 250 dollar cheques to some 18 million Canadians in the spring. The proposed affordability measures come ahead of the government's fall economic statement.
In ten days Paul Bernardo, convicted serial rapist, kidnapper and murderer of teenagers Kristen French, Leslie Mahaffy and Tammy Homolka will again appear before the Parole Board seeking release from prison. Earlier this year Kristen's father Doug French died at age 92. Bernardo will again sit in the same room as the parents/families of his victims making his case for freedom. Meanwhile, if Bernardo were to be released into the general population of a Canadian federal prison his life expectancy would be brief. Guest: Tim Danson. Today's podcast: Today, some 11 days since Americans voted to return Donald Trump to the White House by a significant majority in what was expected to be a very close election, the president-elect's named cabinet officers list is generating both praise, scorn, and open concern, might we Canadians, exactly 1 year from today be dealing very recent and much unexpected federal election results of our own and what might such an unexpected federal election result have us facing? Meanwhile, former Liberal Deputy PM John Manley is advising a snap federal election now with a new Canadian federal government in place in time for Donald Trump's inauguration as U.S. President and able to challenge any Trump admin decisions potentially harmful to this country. Guest: Darrell Bricker. CEO. IPSOS Public Affairs There's no question that Taylor Swift is a music royalty and perhaps the single most successful music act ever (Bigger than the Beatles? Bigger than Elvis?) In Toronto, Swift is treated as royalty and a motorcade rivals what King Charles might experience. And who pays for this? And is it all necessary? Meanwhile, Swift's presence in Toronto adds some $282 million to the city's economy. While Taylor Swift still has concerts to perform in Toronto, she will then be in Vancouver from December 6 to 8, with the VPD preparing to add 700 officers to its rotation during the Tay Tay concerts. But about the bar set by Toronto. Guest: Joe Warmington. Columnist with The Toronto Sun. Alvin and Judith Neeley shared the worst kind of love story, one that involved murder. They were the precursors to the 'Ken and Barbie' killers, Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka, and liked to refer to themselves as 'Boney and Claude', a comical version of Bonnie and Clyde. The things that this dirtbag duo did to prove their love to each other ended the lives of Lisa Ann Millican and Janice Kay Chatman, but the truth about each of their involvement becomes very murky in the waters of he said, she said.
Couples From Hell Month continues with Christopher and Eric's outraged final serving of the last two episodes of KEN & BARBIE KILLERS: THE LOST MURDER TAPES on Max. Canada's most hideous murder case turns into Canada's trial of the century. (Don't just take our word for it, check out the comments from our Canadian Party People!) The resulting media melee raises questions about the nation's legal system in the process — questions that raise Christopher and Eric's blood pressure as well. Just when you thought this story couldn't get any worse, we're greeted by a legal legerdemain from hell, evidence so distressing it sends spectators fleeing from the court room and obstruction of justice of the lowest and most pernicious sort. Eric rounds out the fiery discussion with an interrogation of everything that wasn't covered in this otherwise exhaustive series. (Spoiler alert: Which wolves raised Paul Bernardo?)
It's May. Here at TDPS, wedding bells are ringing and true crime victims are screaming. To pay their own special homage to this season of renewals and nuptials, your bitter old hosts Christopher and Eric kick off our celebration of Couples From Hell Month with Part 1 of a True Crime TV Club installment serving up KEN & BARBIE KILLERS: THE LOST MURDER TAPES on Max. Our tale of marriage and mayhem begins in the Toronto area in the early 90's, where a sexual predator is stalking one of its most peaceful suburbs. As the evil spreads, the trial of clues leads to the doorstep of a charismatic and attractive young couple, Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Is this a story of domestic abuse spiraling out of control? Or is there evil beyond imagining behind closed doors? Christopher and Eric's discussion of episodes 1 and 2 ends with a shocking cliffhanger in this tangled investigation. In our next episode, they serve up the stunning conclusion of what many still describe as Canada's trial of the century.

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains graphic depictions of sexual violence. Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka certainly didn't seem like a pair of serial killers. They may have looked like a normal young couple from the outside, but video footage revealed incredibly dark secrets about the “Ken and Barbie Killers”.
