More than 50 years after the Zodiac Killer mysteriously vanished, his crimes and letters still haunt the world. The Zodiac Killer conducted a campaign of terror in the late 1960s, killing seven victims before taunting investigators through a series of cryptic letters, clues and coded messages sent to local newspapers. For more than five decades, investigators have searched for the identity of the Zodiac Killer. Hoaxes and forged letters fueled an ongoing media circus while the mystery inspired TV documentaries, feature films, books, websites, podcasts, and even copycat killers. This compelling biography is written by Michael Butterfield, a writer and researcher who has been investigating the Zodiac case for more than 30 years. He separates fact from fiction and lays out what we know about the crimes, the mysteries and the theories surrounding the case, its legacy in popular culture, and where the investigation stands today.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. We have guest on today's episode is hoping to bring attention and light to a very cold case. A few weeks ago, I had the honor and pleasure of speaking to 11 time Emmy award-winning (to name a few) creative composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and NOW filmmaker, Dan Brown Junior. Because you listen to this podcast and many other podcasts across the true crime landscape, I can say with a reasonable degree of certainty that you have most likely heard Dan's work…somewhere…on networks such as ABC,CBS, NBC, Disney, A & E, Investigation Discovery, Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, History Channel, Hallmark, NFL, HBO, TLC, HLN, Oxygen,, BET, AMC, Apple, Crime & Investigation… on shows such as Dateline, Snapped, Unspeakable Crimes, The Hunt for the Zodiac Killer, Pitbulls & Parolees, Killer Beside Me, Catfish, The Hunt with John Walks, Deadline Crime with Tamron Hall, Wives with Knives, American Greed, The Disappearance of Maura Murray, Very Scary People, Forensic Files II, The Disappearance of Crystal Roberts, A Current Affair…to name a few…there are literally thousands of places where you've heard his work and today, we will put…at least a voice to the musician who woke up one day and decided he wanted to “write the music you hear on the crime shows”. With that, Dan created Crimesonics in 2018 with a singular goal in mind…to take over the sound of crime television, films and games worldwide by supplying the globe with exquisitely criminal production music. Since then, Crimesonics, under Dan's creative vision and leadership, has amassed an eclectic repository of criminal and investigative music and sound effects, redefining what Crime TV could sound like. Dan has since crossed over into filmmaking with a project that is also a passion, with his documentary Girl Forgotten: What Happened To Brianna Wells. You heard the trailer of Dan's film at the opening, a link to which is in the show notes where you can watch and subscribe to Crimesonics on YouTube…which you're going to want to once you learn who Brianna was and is…and the ongoing efforts to solve her murder. With his documentary, Dan hopes to bring light to a case that has been languishing in darkness for more than a decade. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, from Los Angeles to San Francisco, Californians were terrorized by multiple killers including notorious serial killers like the Zodiac Killer, the Hillside Stranglers, Herbert Mullin, and Ed Kemper. While the decade may have ended with these killers disappearing or apprehended, the threat of violence and murder simply moved north.Though less known than his contemporaries, David Carpenter was no less prolific and frightening a killer than those men mentioned above. Nicknamed “The Trailside Killer” by the press, Carpenter terrorized Point Reyes and Santa Cruz County for a decade, assaulting, kidnapping, and killing at least eight people, but he was suspected of more. Like those other killers, Carpenter had a long history of violent and antisocial behavior going back to his childhood, including multiple arrests and incarcerations. Throughout the early 1970s, California's Bay Area was in the grip of terror as multiple serial killers operated at the time same time and in more or less the same space. In time, some of these killers, like Ed Kemper, would be caught, while others, like the Zodiac Killer, would remain unidentified. Yet it was the ones who appeared to kill at random, without any preferred victim, that would prove the most terrifying and most difficult to catch. Herbert Mullin was one such killer, and while he may have been active for a very short period, he managed to do a tremendous amount of damage in such a little amount of time.Over a five-month period in late 1972 and early 1973, Herbert Mullin killed thirteen people, including a college girl, a Catholic priest, and a former high school friend and that friend's neighbors. To investigators, Mullin's victims appeared to be—and indeed largely were—chosen at random and the weapons used were chosen more out of convenience than pathology. Had Mullin's final murder not been committed in full view of witnesses, there's a very good chance he would have gone on to kill many more people before being caught, if he ever was.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1972. Dirty Harry (1971) is a film that not only redefined the crime thriller genre but also cemented Clint Eastwood's place as one of cinema's most iconic leading men. In this week's episode of Born to Watch, Whitey and Gow are joined by special guest Will the Worky to discuss this gritty masterpiece that follows the relentless pursuit of justice by Inspector Harry Callahan. With its unforgettable storytelling, striking cinematography, and the moral dilemmas it raises, Dirty Harry is more than just a film—it's a cultural landmark. In this Dirty Harry Movie Review, we'll break down why this movie remains a genre-defining classic.A Plot as Sharp as Harry's MagnumThe plot of Dirty Harry grips you from the very first frame. San Francisco is under siege by the Scorpio Killer, a psychopathic sniper terrorising the city with seemingly random acts of violence. From the chilling opening, where a woman is gunned down while swimming in a rooftop pool, to Scorpio's taunting letters to the police, the film wastes no time establishing the stakes. Harry Callahan is assigned to the case, and the audience is quickly introduced to his no-nonsense approach to law enforcement. The tension escalates as Scorpio's crimes become more horrifying, including a demand for ransom and threats to kill schoolchildren. As Harry tracks the killer, the film raises moral questions about justice. Harry's unorthodox and often brutal tactics contrast sharply with the red tape and legal technicalities that allow Scorpio to evade justice. This moral grey area forms the backbone of the film, making every decision Harry makes feel weighty and consequential.Clint Eastwood as Harry CallahanClint Eastwood's magnetic performance as Inspector Harry Callahan is at the heart of the film. Already a star thanks to his roles in Sergio Leone's Westerns, Eastwood brings a rugged charisma to Harry, a man hardened by years of dealing with San Francisco's worst criminals. Harry's disdain for bureaucracy and willingness to cross ethical boundaries make him a fascinating antihero.Eastwood's portrayal balances toughness with a quiet vulnerability. Harry isn't a superhero; he's a man doing what he believes is necessary to protect the innocent, even if it means operating outside the boundaries of the law. His stoic demeanour and undeniable screen presence make Harry Callahan one of cinema's most enduring characters.A Villain Who Gets Under Your SkinA great hero needs a formidable villain, and Dirty Harry delivers one of the most unsettling antagonists in film history with the Scorpio Killer, played by Andrew Robinson. Inspired by the real-life Zodiac Killer, Scorpio is a sadistic predator who revels in chaos and fear. Robinson's performance is chilling, blending moments of eerie calm with outbursts of unhinged violence.Scorpio's unpredictability keeps the audience on edge, and his ability to manipulate the legal system adds another layer of tension. This isn't a villain Harry can overpower; he must outwit him while navigating the constraints of the justice system. The dynamic between Harry and Scorpio elevates the film, making their battle a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse.Cinematography and the Gritty Streets of San FranciscoOne of Dirty Harry's standout features is its use of San Francisco as a backdrop. The city becomes a character in its own right, with its steep hills, foggy streets, and iconic landmarks providing a rich, atmospheric setting for the story. The cinematography by Bruce Surtees captures the grittiness of urban life in the 1970s, grounding the film in a harsh reality that feels both timeless and authentic.Surtees uses natural light and shadow to great effect, particularly in the nighttime sequences, which heighten the tension and give the film a noir-like quality. The action scenes, from the tense stakeouts to the thrilling final showdown, are shot with a rawness that makes them feel immediate and visceral. The result is a film that immerses viewers in its world, making the stakes feel all the more real.Action and Suspense Done RightDirty Harry masterfully balances moments of quiet suspense with bursts of intense action. The pacing is deliberate, building tension as Harry gets closer to catching Scorpio. When the action erupts, it's brutal and unrelenting, reflecting the story's high stakes. The film's most memorable sequences, including Harry's iconic “Do I feel lucky?” confrontation and the climactic chase through a quarry, are perfectly executed, blending taut direction with Eastwood's commanding screen presence.Dirty Harry's grounding in the story sets the action apart. Every gunshot, every punch, every chase serves a narrative purpose, heightening the stakes and revealing more about Harry's character. The action is never gratuitous; it's a natural extension of the film's themes and conflicts.A Soundtrack That Sets the ToneThe film's score, composed by Lalo Schifrin, is another standout element. The music combines jazz and orchestral elements with avant-garde sounds, creating a sense of unease that mirrors the tension onscreen. Schifrin's unconventional rhythms and eerie melodies enhance the film's atmosphere, making the viewer feel the menace of Scorpio's presence and the relentless drive of Harry's pursuit.Themes of Justice and MoralityOne of the reasons Dirty Harry remains so compelling is its exploration of justice and morality. The film asks difficult questions about the balance between individual freedoms and the need for public safety. Harry's methods are controversial, often skirting the line between heroism and vigilantism. He's a character who doesn't fit neatly into the role of a traditional hero, which makes him all the more fascinating. The film also critiques the bureaucracy of law enforcement, highlighting how red tape and legal loopholes can prevent justice from being served. This theme resonated deeply in the 1970s, a time of social unrest and disillusionment with authority, and it remains relevant today.A Legacy That EnduresMore than 50 years after its release, Dirty Harry continues influencing the crime thriller genre. Its impact can be seen in countless films and TV shows, from Lethal Weapon to Breaking Bad. Harry Callahan's uncompromising attitude and moral complexity have become archetypes for antiheroes, and the film's gritty realism set a new standard for action cinema.Dirty Harry also launched a successful franchise, with Eastwood reprising the role in four sequels. While the later films vary in quality, the original remains a benchmark for the genre—a film that challenges, thrills and entertains in equal measure.Dirty Harry is more than just a movie; it's a cultural phenomenon that redefined what a crime thriller could be. With its sharp storytelling, unforgettable characters, and moral complexity, the film has earned its place as a timeless classic. Whether you're a first-time viewer or a longtime fan, Dirty Harry remains a must-watch for anyone who loves cinema. This week on Born to Watch, Whitey, Gow, and special guest Will the Worky explore why this 1971 masterpiece still resonates with audiences today. Tune in to the latest episode to dive deeper into the legacy of Harry Callahan and the world of Dirty Harry. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at

So picture this: It's 1994. The Pixies had been music-world darlings for half a decade or so, releasing some incredible records before fizzling to a stop. Their enigmatic singer, Black Francis, changes his name (again—his parents named him Charles Thompson) to Frank Black and embarks on a solo career that feels a little vexing at the time. His self-titled debut felt deeply connected to his old band, but for the next one, he struck an even richer songwriting vein: The songs kept coming and they turned into the double album Teenager of the Year, recorded with a crack studio band that included Eric Drew Feldman of Pere Ubu both as a player and producer. Teenager of the Year wasn't particularly well received upon its release 30 years ago, but it has slowly been recognized as a high point in Black's career, celebrated as his masterpiece by those paying the closest attention. It may not get the widespread attention that Pixies' Doolittle does, but the love it gets might even run a little deeper, both from its creator and his biggest fans. It's meaningful enough that Black and the original band that created it have just embarked on an anniversary tour during which they'll play the whole record, and it's being re-released on gold vinyl, a gold record that should have been. You can find dates online, they'll be hitting major US cities throughout January, ending in New York February 1 before heading to Paris and London. As a high school student, Paul Banks came to the Pixies via a love of Nirvana, and eventually found his way to Teenager of the Year, an album that—as you'll hear in this conversation—was massively important to him. Banks would of course go on to form the band Interpol, for which he has been the singer and guitarist since 1997. Their latest is 2022's The Other Side of Make-Believe, but Interpol has also been revisiting a beloved album recently, touring on the anniversary of their classic second record, Antics. These two have a great chat about Teenager of the Year here, plus they talk about Black's kids and their musical ambitions, lyric writing in general, and the time Black was asked to audition for the part of a serial killer in a David Fincher movie. They also get into some specifics about Teenager of the Year songs, including a great story about album opener "Whatever Happened to Pong?" Enjoy. In the 1970s, shortly after the horrific reign of the Zodiac Killer, another serial killer wreaked havoc on San Francisco, killing as many as seventeen men he'd met at bars and nightclubs across the city. Intriguingly, the killer reportedly sketched his victims before stabbing them and leaving their bodies to be discovered in public places - most commonly on a beautiful beach along the city's edge. This is the story of The San Francisco Doodler.
We all know the story of the Zodiac Killer, the mysterious psychopath who terrorized Northern California in the late 1960s. But what many don't know is just how many legitimate suspects there are in America's most baffling serial killer case.
In 1969, the Zodiac Killer sent the San Francisco Bay Area into terror. In this second part of my 2-part series, I tell you what happened next. I also tell you who I think is the most likely suspect. Hour 1 Yesterday Aaron Rodgers said something that should frighten Jets fans. He was asked if he's going to play next year and he said, ‘yes'. So they're going to bring in a new GM and a new coach with Aaron Rodgers? Gio wonders why he would want to go through that. Boomer said because it's a lot of money, that's why. Boomer said Jon Gruden would love to work with a QB like Rodgers. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of Aaron Rodgers saying he wants to play next season. The Drew & Stew podcast is taking some heat from Taylor Swift fans after one of the guys said to ‘throw her in the falls' (Niagara Falls that is). The Knicks lost to the Bulls last night. In the final segment of the hour, Caitlyn Clark was playing at a pro-am and sliced one into the crowd. Hour 2 Do we really think that Mike Tyson and Jake Paul are fighting for real and not scripted? Gio said it feels like Connor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather. Gio said it's pro wrestling. We took a ton of calls from people who really want to watch the match and are excited about it. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Kelce brothers talking about NFL players pooping their pants. Jeff Ulbrich is still saying nice things about Aaron Rodgers. Anthony Richardson will start for the Colts against the Jets this weekend. The Knicks lost to the Bulls as Jalen Brunson missed a last second shot. In the final segment of the hour, Gio watched the Netflix documentary series on the Zodiac Killer. Boomer is watching ‘The Diplomat'. Gio and Eddie both like ‘Severence'. Al is watching ‘Investigation Alien'. Eddie is watching ‘Foundation'. Hour 3 Boomer did another sports minute about Juan Soto even though we made a pact of not talking about him until he actually signed somewhere or there was legitimate news about him. Gio said somewhere here at work, someone is alleging another co-worker stopped talking to them because of the election. We played some of the audio of Al arguing with C-Lo and Al arguing with Jerry. Jerry returns for an update but first Boomer talks about a guy from Maryland who passed away. We get breaking news that Jon Gruden has signed a multi-year deal with Barstool Sports. We heard from John Minko as St. Johns beat Wagner. Hofstra beat Seton Hall and Jerry played the final call from Hofstra student radio. In the final segment of the hour, we talked more about the upcoming Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight. Hour 4 Rick Pitino joins us on the phone to talk about St. John's after beating Wagner last night. Rick is coaching against his son, Rich, as they play Mexico State at MSG. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with a reporter asking Aaron Rodgers if he wants to play next season. Jeff Ulbrich talked about getting back to actually tackling this week. In fact, Ulbrich had a ‘tackling presentation' this week for the team. The Moment of The Day: ‘Poop-a-vich'. In the final segment of the show, Keith Hernandez's cat, Hadji, passed away at 22 years old. Keith also responded on X to the pic of him smoking in the dugout. Boomer is having a hard time guessing the top selling NFL jersey as it's not who you think.

Jeremy Foy is a former Marine and a former Federal Law Enforcement officer. He has been releasing videos on tiktok stating that he knows that his grandfather, Richard Hoffman, a former police officer, was the Zodiac killer. I have no way of knowing if he was. There are many suspects. If nothing else, this episode should serve as a reminder that the Zodiac Killer murdered multiple people and has thus far gotten away with it. I hope that the Zodiac killer's identity will be revealed someday so that we can finally mark the case as solved.Tom Voigt's website: ZodiacKiller.comJeremy's tiktok: jeremyfoy_3.0See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
