In the humid nights of New Orleans in the early years of the 1900's, a shadowy figure prowled the moonlit streets. “They have never caught me and they never will. They have never seen me, for I am invisible, even as the ether which surrounds your earth. I am not a human being, but a spirit and a fell demon from hottest hell. I am what you Orleanians and your foolish police call the axman.” Whilst almost certainly not written by any real Axeman, this letter, published in the press during the peak of a series of attacks by a violent perpetrator, struck fear into the hearts of citizens who were already terrified of the brutal, seemingly random violence that had been wrapping the city in a terrifying mystery for almost a decade. Happy Spooky Wednesday! For our third week of 2024 True Crime January, we've got the notorious Axeman of New Orleans. This serial killer stalked New Orleans and the surrounding areas in the early 1900s. For over a year, this man brutally ended the lives of many using the tools he found in the homes, especially axes. The Axeman was never identified, and the murders remain unsolved. Is his spirit still lingering on the streets of New Orleans? Or is it just a bad memory that continues to plague the minds of the locals?
Over a century later, the Axeman of New Orleans remains unidentified. Writers and historians sometimes disagree on which cases should be grouped together and whether or not the early cases from 1910-1911 should be included. Join Mike and Gibby as they finish up with part on The Axeman of New Orleans. Most of the Axeman cases followed a pattern: forced entry, an attack with an ax, hatchet, or cleaver, and the perpetrator fleeing the scene quickly, occasionally stealing low-value items. In this second episode, we'll focus on the rest of the attacks, thought to be attributed to the Axeman, a scary letter, and a few potential suspects. (The Axeman's Jazz) *** The investigation of an apparent suicide in 1953 led to an unbelievable theory… not only had the victim used LSD years earlier, but it was quite possible it was forced upon him by the Central Intelligence Agency. (The CIA and LSD) *** You don't often hear of people being struck and killed by lightning – at least not nowadays. But pick up a paper from the early 1900s and you'd think people were doing it as a hobby. (Death By Electrical Storm) *** January 30th, 1835 was the date of the first attempt at assassinating a sitting U.S. President – Andrew Jackson. That fact itself doesn't warrant placement in Weird Darkness, seeing as the attempt failed – but the story leading up to the attempt, and the attempt itself, certainly earn their place in this episode. What kind of killer could chisel out the panel of a door and creep inside without waking a soul? How was he so light on his feet that nobody heard him coming on the dark, moonless nights on which he struck? That's what the people of New Orleans were asking themselves when their city was terrorised by a mysterious Axeman who targeted Italian grocers, leaving nothing behind but blood, fear, and a discarded weapon - and taking nothing with him except the secret of his identity. He came and went like a phantom, spreading a wave of brutality through the City of Festivals that would not easily be forgotten. At first the May 22rd, 1918 double murder of Catherine and Joseph Maggio on Magnolia Street in New Orleans seemed to be a family matter. Joseph's brother Andrew was the one to discover the bloody crime scene and he was soon arrested under suspicion of murder. But when police failed to find a motive or evidence linking Andrew to the crime, they were forced to let him go. Little did they know that these were the first of a series of brutal attacks that would plague the city of New Orleans for the next 18 months.Sources:The Terrifying Axeman of New Orleans from BuzzFeed UnsolvedThe Axeman of New Orleans: The Killer Who Loved Jazz from BiographicsThe Axeman of New Orleans Preyed on Italian Immigrants from Smithsonian MagazineThe Axeman of New Orleans from Legends of America The Axeman of New Orleans from The Ministry of HistoryLouisiana and the 1918-1919 Pandemic from Influenza Encyclopedia Current Murder Rates in New Orleans:Why New Orleans Has the Highest Murder Rate in America from the Wall Street JournalNew Orleans Now the Nation's Murder Capital from NBC NewsGreat Tours to Check Out When You Visit New Orleans: French Quarter Hauntings and History from Spectral City ToursGarden District Secrets and Scandals from Spectral City ToursThe Killers and Thrillers Tour from Ghost City ToursManchac Magic Kayak Swamp Tours from Wild Louisiana ToursSee ya next Wednesday! The Axeman of New Orleans was an unidentified American serial killer active in New Orleans, Louisiana, and surrounding communities, including Gretna, from May 1918 to October 1919. Thanks for joining us for our penultimate episode and we will be back next week for the final episode of the CC Unsolved podcast.
On this week's episode, we discuss the murders committed by the Axeman of New Orleans.
In the early 1900s, the bustling city of New Orleans, Louisiana was terrorized by a serial killer. They attacked 12 people in their homes over the course of a year. What makes this case unusual is the alleged killer's promise - to spare those that played jazz music from their homes. While the reign of terror ended in 1919, the aftereffects are felt even in the present. Today, we look at the disturbing case of the Axeman of New Orleans. The Axeman of New Orleans was a nearly forgotten serial murderer who assaulted twelve victims in the late 1910s. What has kept him from fading into complete obscurity is his letter to the local newspaper in which he claimed to be a demon from Hell that loved jazz music - and if the citizens of New Orleans wanted him to stop killing, they'd be in the middle of a swinging jazz party when he next visited their city. From May 1918 to October of 1919, the Big Easy of New Orleans was the scene of a brutal serial killer. Targeting mostly Italian immigrants, he would murder his victims and their families while they slept, cutting their throat with a straight razor or bashing their heads in with…an axe. Referring to himself as not human, but a spirit and a demon from the hottest hell, he would kill six of his twelve victims. And 103 years later, the ghosts of some of his victims still haunt the places they lived, or died. This is the unsolved case of the Axeman of New Orleans.Sources used for this podcastJOIN THE HITCHED 2 HOMICIDE IN-LAWS AND OUTLAWSSTART KRIS CALVERT'S BOOKS TODAY FOR FREEH2H WEBSITEH2H on TWITTERH2H on INSTA...

(The President and the Madman) *** I'll end the episode in the Chamber of Comments, but before that, my last story will the most disturbing one of the episode. Most ghosts are seemingly passive or even benevolent, appearing to scare people only by accident, never by intent. But then there are the stories of violent and angry ghosts – spirits that not only bring terror, but also bloodshed and even death by their own ghostly hands. We'll look at some famous cases of violent hauntings throughout history.
