Call it 'pro-active thinking' or a more 'watchful move', the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor's unscheduled address today definitely cheered the Street. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday revealed the central bank's blueprint to mitigate the impact of the second Covid wave that's wreaking havoc in the country. Most of the measures announced by the RBI Governor centred around boosting liquidity which analysts believe will support the economy and businesses. Some of the measures announced included - term liquidity of Rs 50,000 crore as on-tap liquidity for access to the emergency health facility, three-year TLTRO for small finance banks, another instalment of G-SAP of Rs 35,000 crore and lending by SFBs to MSMEs to be classified as priority sector lending. But no announcement on the moratorium front surprised some. What does this signal and what it means for the banking sector? And can the lure of 40 bps additional interest be enough to push banks into creating a Covid loan book at a time when they are struggling to manage regular operations? Moreover, Das also signalled the situation has altered on the economic front and MPC will take cognisance of the same in its next policy meeting slated in June. Will this lead RBI to change its inflation forecast and what should one expect from the next MPC outcome? We seek answers to these questions and more as we interact with Ajit Mishra, VP - Research at Religare Broking and Kajal Gandhi, banking research analyst at ICICI Securities
India administered 170 million Covid-19 vaccine doses fastest globally, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday. China took 119 days while the US took 115 days for reaching the same landmark. Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh account for 66.79 per cent of the cumulative doses given so far in the country. But there is shortage of vaccination across the country. Biocon Executive Chairman Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has expressed concern over shortage of Covid-19 vaccines and sought better transparency from the government regarding their availability so that citizens could patiently wait for their turn. India's most socioeconomically backward states may have to spend as much as 30% of their health budgets to procure Covid-19 vaccines for their populations, an IndiaSpend analysis of population and state budget data has found. They would have to shell out as much as 23% if they were to procure only Serum Institute of India's (SII) Covishield, and up to 30% for Bharat Biotech's Covaxin. Listen to the podcast for more
The deadline is over. And with that, WhatsApp's new policy changes came into force from May 15, onwards. But it seems that implementing this update won't be a cake walk for WhatsApp as the Indian government asked WhatsApp to roll back its privacy policy update, this week. This is because the government believes that the manner of introducing these changes, including in FAQs, undermines the user choice for Indians and harms their rights and interests. This is the second time the government has asked the Facebook-owned firm to withdraw its new privacy policy. And that makes the matter a tad crucial to all WhatsApp users in the country. Tune in to learn how
A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm 'Yaas' and is likely to cross the Odisha-West Bengal coasts on May 26 after turning into a very severe cyclonic storm. Yaas is expected to be about as intense as Cyclone Tauktae which slammed into the west coast last week but tamer than Cyclone Amphan which hit Bengal exactly one year ago and for about three devastating minutes sustained wind speeds of 240 kmph.
