"Savarkar was a great rationalist. The surprising thing is how such a rationalist went completely off the rails in regard to other matters. His writing is full of villains and among the villains are the Buddha, all Buddhists, whom he considered hereditary traitors, Ashoka, Akbar, Tipu Sultan, and then Gandhiji. On the question of Godse and Apte there was no doubt that they were his acolytes, they were his worshippers. Sardar Patel said the problem was that once you create an atmosphere then you don't have to tell anybody to go and assassinate; he reads your lips. You just have to see the publications Savarkar was patronizing... They were only penning hatred and it was all centered on one man -- Gandhiji. Savarkar felt that the Marathas were the real legatees of the Mughal empire and then the damn outsiders, the British, slyly took over. The same thing happens in his own life . He thinks he is the heir to Lokmanya Tilak and then this outsider Gujrati comes and takes the whole prize away. This great disappointment in his life gets centered on one man and becomes hatred. Today, Gandhiji is a great inconvenience because he embodies Hinduism, the collective memory of our people. If Savarkar's line is pursued, then India will become a dismembered nation like Pakistan; society will be riven by hate. This eternal search for purity always ends in that. The difference between Indic religions like Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism from Semitic religions is that ours is an inner-directed search. Everything - pilgrimages, idol worship, mantras etc. is to aid this inner search. When you marry it to the State, religion becomes an instrument of the State. You only have to look at the Jewish religion when Gaza is to be bombed - it just becomes an instrument. Secularism is a way of keeping the purity of religion. It's not anti-religion. Keep religion and the State separate. That is why my book ends with this appeal - Save Hinduism from Hindutva" - Arun Shourie, author, 'The New Icon; Savarkar and the Facts' talks to Manjula Narayan on the Books & Authors podcast.

In this important conversation examining the vital role of journalists and documentarians in conflict zones, Palestinian journalist, Mariam Barghouti and Jenin resident, Rawand Arqawi share their firsthand experiences with Palestinian trauma healer, Ashira Darwish, cutting through the fog of misinformation to reveal the human realities often obscured in Western mainstream narratives. Our guests shared first-hand experiences on reporting from Jenin and the broader region, exploring both the crucial importance of ground-level documentation and the challenges faced by those who undertake this work. Documenting truth has become increasingly dangerous as we've seen more journalists killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza and Lebanon in the past 12 months than in any similar recorded period since 1992, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Mariam Barghouti is a Palestinian-American writer, researcher, and journalist based in Ramallah. She holds a BA in English from Birzeit University and an MSc in Sociology from the University of Edinburgh, where she focused on Israeli Ashkenazi-Mizrahi racial hierarchies. Barghouti is known for monitoring humanitarian aid in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine for various organizations. Her political commentary and research have featured prominently in CNN, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, BBC, The New York Times, and more. She has contributed to books like I Found Myself in Palestine and written profiles on Palestinian figures such as artist Khaled Hourani and politician Dr. Hanan Ashrawi. Ashira Ali Darwish worked for 15 years as a TV & Radio journalist and researcher in Palestine for the BBC, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. She is the founder of Catharsis Holistic Healing, a trauma therapy project pioneering a type of Sufi active meditation which draws its roots from ancestral and Indigenous knowledge. Her personal healing journey from full body paralysis with a severed spinal cord in 2012 has given her a deep insight into the process of recovery and healing. In 2021, she received the “ISABS Honours” from the Indian Society for Applied Behavioural Science for her contribution to positive societal transformation. Rawand Arqawi is a producer and cultural manager who was born and grew up in Jenin. She worked as a production coordinator for nearly six years with the Freedom Theatre, working under theater artist Juliano Mer-Khamis. During her time with the Freedom Theatre, she coordinated dozens of performances, workshops, international tours, exchanges, as well as managing communications, international volunteers, fundraising, and logistics. Beyond her work with the Freedom Theatre, she has contributed to various local artistic projects and groups, including working as a production assistant for Al Jazeera Children. In 2013, she initiated Fragments theater, and has since then continued to produce several performances and workshops. She is passionate about using arts as a tool of resistance. Do you find it difficult to get a good night's sleep? If you do, you are not alone. According to the US National Institutes of Health, between 6 and 30 per cent of adults suffer from insomnia or lack of restorative sleep. Since the establishment of sleep medicine a century ago, we have learnt a lot about the causes of sleeplessness. And yet, as the continuing development of new sleep aids demonstrates, its prevalence remains high. Persistent lack of sleep can have serious consequences for your health but despite this some writers, and other creative people, seem to welcome it. Franz Kafka famously claimed that if he couldn't pursue his stories through the night, they would "break away and disappear". Iszi Lawrence discusses our changing understanding of insomnia, and its hold over our imagination, with Dr. Manvir Bhatia, the vice-president of Indian Society for Sleep Research; science journalist Kenneth Miller, author of Mapping the Darkness; the Scottish writer – and self-confessed ‘intermittent insomniac' - A L Kennedy; and World Service listeners.(Photo: A woman lying awake on a bed at night. "Nehru and Ambedkar represented two very different visions of the way Buddhism could be imagined. Buddhism is a full-fledged revolution for Ambedkar and Nehru's government was not comfortable with that sort of vision of Buddhism. [Similarly] there is a fracture between the Ambedkarite vision of Buddhism and SN Goenka's vision, in which you can be a Hindu or Christian and still practise Vipassana. It unfolds in a wider ecumenical, secularised idea of what a modern India could be like, and I think those two trajectories are really difficult to reconcile. In its totality, what I really wanted to do was paint a picture of all walks of Buddhist life -- the lives of labourers who were inspired to convert to Buddhism, of intellectuals, of both Sanatan Hindus, who had a certain vision of Buddhism, as well as liberal, more secular-minded Hindus, of progressives, Leftists and Right Wing figures... I wanted to understand the whole composite picture of what Buddhism looked like during this broader period of time."

This special event, jointly organized by CSWR and HDS Buddhist Ministry Initiative, aimed to commemorate Dhamma Chakra Day and delved into the enduring legacy of Dr. Ambedkar. His peaceful, egalitarian, grassroots movement has left an indelible mark on Indian society and politics. The event showcased three speakers whose research has deepened our understanding of Buddhism's impact and potential in fostering equality and social justice in India. Speaker List: - Dr Ambedkar: Restructuring of Indian Society towards Liberty, Fraternity, and Equality - Prof S. K. Thorat, Chairman, Indian Institute of Dalit Studies - Dr. Raja Sekhar Vundru, "Buddhism and Emancipation of oppressed classes in India," author of Gandhi, Ambedkar and Patel - Chief Secretary, Haryana State, India. - Dr. William Edelglass, Director, Barre Centre for Buddhist Studies, author of "Equality, Solidarity, and Religion: On Ambedkar's Conversion" Buddhism made a significant comeback in India in October 1956 through a momentous mass conversion led by Dr. Ambedkar and his 500,000 followers, predominantly from the marginalized Untouchable communities. Despite enduring severe structural violence, Dr. Ambedkar eschewed the path of aggression, opting instead for the peaceful transformation of society. He believed that this transformation could only be achieved by embracing the teachings of Buddha-Dhamma. Presently, India boasts over 50 million Buddhists, many of whom found inspiration in Dr. Ambedkar. His conversion movement is a pivotal force, reshaping India's religious and social landscape to a degree not witnessed since the times of Buddha and Ashoka. This event took place on October 19, 2023. This is an episode for those who want to hear an alternative view of the world's largest country. McKinsey has said we are living in the “Indian Century”. Morgan Stanley believes 20 percent of global growth in the next decade will come from India. Our guest today, Princeton economist Ashoka Mody, has a different view, which he details in his new book: “India Is Broken”. He argues that there are two Indias, a successful, highly skilled and educated elite and a billion-plus population that remains very poor. Mody believes that this dangerous equilibrium is maintained by a close link between the government, big business and, in some cases, organized crime. This association produces projects that attract capital and headlines but leaves an employment deficit of over 100 million jobs.----------EXCEPTIONAL RESOURCE: Find Out How to Build a Safer & Better Performing Portfolio using this FREE NEW Portfolio Builder Tool----Follow Niels on Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or via the TTU website.IT's TRUE ? – most CIO's read 50+ books each year – get your FREE copy of the Ultimate Guide to the Best Investment Books ever written here. And you can get a free copy of my latest book “The Many Flavors of Trend Following” here.Learn more about the Trend Barometer here.Send your questions to info@toptradersunplugged.comAnd please share this episode with a like-minded friend and leave an honest Rating & Review on iTunes or Spotify so more people can discover the podcast.Follow Kevin on SubStack.Follow Ashoka on Twitter & read his book.Episode TimeStamps: 04:14 - Introduction to Ashoka Mody 10:19 - The development path of East Asia 14:41 - The path that India did not take 19:32 - The path they did take 23:37 - Different versions of India 30:37 - What is Hindutva? 34:09 - The Guljurat model of development 39:34 - A corrupted government 46:17 - Finding the accurate data...

You probably don't spend much time thinking about all the gifts WA politicians receive. But maybe you should. Because no one gives anything to a pollie because they are so grateful for democracy. Gifts are usually given to politicians because the giver is trying to suck up. So does it work? Well, that's the key question here. In an ideal world, no policy decision would be shaped by getting a gift hamper of artisan jams and relishes. But this ain't an ideal world, is it. That's why it's a great thing that The West Australian is going to be, for the first time publishing the official register of gifts and hospitality received by WA cabinet ministers. I'm not going to go through all of it right now - so let's just focus on what our glorious leader Mark McGowan has been given. And if nothing else, it's a pretty fun list. There's a beaded necklace, and some sweets from the Indian Society of WA. A silk satchel for good luck from the Chinese consul. The AFL commission gave him a match day ball from the AFL grand final that was played in Perth last year. A couple of stuffed dog toys from the Guide Dogs association. A hand knitted lime green jumper with the words It's OK to run with a kebab” embroidered on it - what a keepsake that is. A CD from the Albany Shantymen. Yes, apparently CDs are still a thing. 5 kilos of frozen prawns from the Kailis brothers. And there is so much more. So what is the takeaway here? Well, for starters it's good to be the king… Whoops… I mean the Premier. Because you certainly get sent a lot of interesting stuff. Not that McGowan kept it all, in fact a lot of the really crappy stuff he handballed to his office staff. But has any of it influenced the Premier's thinking on certain issues? Well, that's a lot harder to assess. But having it all listed in such a transparent way is the first step in figuring it out.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our guest on this episode of the podcast is Anil Santhapuri, Director of Learning and Development at CGI - a consulting service that helps accelerate returns on investment.Anil started off his career as an IT consultant. Five years into it, he found himself leaning towards HR and Learning. After spending 19 glorious years in talent management, learning and leadership development, he definitely has a lot of insights to share in this episode.Prior to CGI he worked at various firms such as Western Union, HCL Technologies, Mahindra Satyam, and iGate Global Solutions. He has designed and delivered award-winning talent initiatives. He is a 'future of work' and 'digital transformation' enthusiast, and is currently a Technical Advisory Board member for Global Skill Development Council - an international credentialing and certification body for the latest emerging technologies. He is also an adjunct teaching faculty with the Indian Society for Training and Development (ISTD).Anil curates a weekly 'L&D Practitioner Knowledge Series' called "Learning Circles" which is open to anyone from the HR/Learning profession to join and participate. He is also a frequent speaker and panelist in HR and Learning industry events.Episode Highlights:1. Role of Leadership in a Crisis Anil Santhapuri talks about eight practices that every leader of an organisation that faces a crisis should follow. They are:Revisiting the purpose of establishing the organisationFocusing on the confidence of stakeholders and employeesEngaging with key stakeholdersBecoming proactive in communicationDemonstrating visibilityResponding to the crisis through focused execution, Changing or adapting the business model according to the changed situationDemonstrating a sense of urgency. 2. Ways of implementing and managing workplace changes effectively The shifting mindset of employees across the world needs to be taken into account, according to Anil. The workplace is no longer a physical location after the pandemic, and therefore business plans must consider the new market dynamics. He said adapting for a hybrid workplace is also essential from now onwards. 3. Future workplace and importance of employee engagement The future workplace for every organisation would be different, but the basic principles will remain the same. Organisations are focusing on the employee-driven market nowadays, and the pandemic has played a huge role. Therefore, we must relook at engaging policies. Organisations should promise employees two things: (a) How will the companies contribute to employees' professional development, and (b) how will they engage them. Anil talks about intellectual alignment to engage the employees' minds and emotional alignment to engage their hearts. Empowering them and working on their legacy will engage both their body and spirit, according to Anil. 4. Future skills that the workplace needs to be prepared for There is a huge gap between what systems generate and what industry requires. Anil suggests the adoption of cloud computing, AI, data analytics, etc. He recommends reading the World Economic Forum to learn more about the key skills required for the future workplace. He talks about classifying skills into three types: upskilling, reskilling, and meta-skilling. Upskilling is thinking about the next thing that an employee should focus on while working in an organisation. Reskilling is adapting to new technologies like AI and the cloud.Follow Anil on LinkedIn.Produced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Rohan Mankad

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, in the town of Meerut, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to Company power in that region, and was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also known as the India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Mutiny, the Revolt of 1857, the Uprising of 1857, the Sepoy Rebellion, and the Sepoy Mutiny. The Mutiny was a result of various grievances. However the flashpoint was reached when the soldiers were asked to bite off the paper cartridges for their rifles which were greased with animal fat namely beef and pork. This was, and is, against the religious beliefs of Hindus and Muslims. Other regions of Company-controlled India – such as Bengal, the Bombay Presidency, and the Madras Presidency remained largely calm.In Punjab, the Sikh princes backed the Company by providing soldiers and support. The large princely states of Hyderabad, Mysore, Travancore, and Kashmir, as well as the smaller ones of Rajputana, did not join the rebellion. In some regions, such as Oudh, the rebellion took on the attributes of a patriotic revolt against European presence. Maratha leaders, such as the Lakshmibai, the Rani of Jhansi, became folk heroes in the nationalist movement in India half a century later; however, they themselves "generated no coherent ideology" for a new order.qaThe rebellion led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858. It also led the British to reorganize the army, the financial system and the administration in India. India was thereafter directly governed by the crown as the new British Raj.The podcast is under an hour, brief but informative and the history hit you are looking for. Please review! If you are in University years, this episode is great for you! It's also wonderful for you as a parent!  In this episode, we dive into:  “University Life & Sleep” Professor Krishnan's origin story and how did he reach this space of being Director at IIMB? Upto 60% of college students suffer from poor sleep quality. As someone who is an integral part of so many people's formative years in college, what does he see are sleep challenges among them? Does it need to be that way? From 2010-2018, sleep disturbances significantly increased in college students with 25% of them having difficulties. This can have short term and long term cognitive and behavioural repercussions.  Research has found 60% of them having insomnia. This can impact academic performance. Do universities need to bring in sleep quality and mental health screening programs? Is counselling a part of IIMB? By supporting students in improving sleep, it can contribute to helping them with better memory, improved grades, less health challenges, decreased risk of falling sick, improved mood, better performance and less mental health challenges. Do universities in India have support in place for helping their students to sleep better? How would he advice students that supporting themselves with better sleep and improved health is actually beneficial to them?
