Weekend Recap with Cubs, NBA & NHL plus portal commits, Alec Busse talks Cyclones

Have you noticed how southern Africa tends to be hit by deadly cyclones that leave a trail of destruction? Right now the people of Mozambique are trying to piece their lives together after Cyclone Jude battered the country this month. Before it, two others, Chido and Dikeledi, hit the same part of southern Africa in quick succession. All three claimed dozens of lives, leaving schools, homes and other buildings severely damaged. Today Alan Kasujja sits down with Lehlohonolo Thobela of the South African Weather Service in Pretoria. “If you speak about Mozambique, Madagascar, South Africa, those are usually the areas that usually experience tropical cyclones. Geographically, the Indian Ocean is in the eastern parts. The Indian Ocean itself is where cyclones are born. Why? Because they need warmth”, Lehlohonolo says. Alan also hears from Mary Louise Eagleton of UNICEF, who is in Maputo. She's been to the most affected areas and shares what she's seen.

Sunday was a big day on and off the court for Ole Miss senior guard Cam Brent. His 6-seed Rebels (24-11) punched just their second-ever ticket to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament with a dominant, 91-78 win over 3-seed Iowa State. Next is 2-seed Michigan State (29-6) on Friday in Atlanta. Tipoff is 6 p.m. CT on CBS.Second-year head coach Chris Beard handed Brent the Ole Miss placard to stick to the oversized bracket in the locker room following the win over the Cyclones. But before he did, Beard announced Brent, a three-year walk-on, was getting a full scholarship. “Congratulations on your full scholarship,” Beard said.Brent joins Ben Garrett on this edition of Talk of Champions to discuss the special moment, as well as the Rebels' unforgettable March Madness run. The Ole Miss men and women are both in the Sweet 16 in the same season for the first time in school history. Brent didn't appear in any games until the 2023-24 season, when he appeared in six. Our Cesta Cyclones picked up a huge comeback win yesterday, but Billy has some criticism of the Cyclones' management to kick off the show. Jess is still trying to watch every Best Picture nominee before Sunday's Oscars, but Greg thinks there are too many nominees. He also believes he could be an actor in a Best Picture nominee with one month of practice. Could he hit a 100 mph fastball? Probably not. Could he take a carry in an NFL game? He'd probably lose three yards. But could he be as good as Walton Goggins? Maybe! Then, the Miami Heat are playing as badly as we've seen them, and our show is over them. Mike Ryan is ready to take another victory lap about Terry Rozier, but is it worth talking about? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
We are celebrating Ron Magill's upcoming 65th birthday today! Then, Ron joins the show to discuss turning 65, whether or not sharks are death machines, and how he ruined the chupacabra myth. Plus, Ron is fired up about the Cyclones after last night's massive comeback win and counters Billy's criticisms from earlier with compliments to management for the team they've put together. Then, we cap off the hour with a discussion of the Lakers' strong defensive metrics with LeBron James and Luka Doncic so far and Anthony Davis's new prank show. Learn more about your ad choices.
