Hinglish is as a vibrant, dynamic linguistic fusion that is reshaping communication in India and beyond . It's a hybridized language where English and Hindi meet, with English words often "peppered" into Hindi, Urdu, or Punjabi structures, especially in India. Its widespread popularity is largely attributed to mass media, including advertising jingles and movie titles . Hinglish offers practical utility by expanding vocabulary and has a "magical capacity" to "unite the mind and the heart", connecting emotional Hindi with the formal and practical aspects of English.Structurally, Hindi often acts as the "matrix language" (providing grammar), while English is the "server language" (providing content words) . This fluid mixing is seen in examples like "Mujhe kal Airport drop kar dena" .While some language purists view Hinglish as a "dilution" , the summary emphasizes that mixed languages are not new, citing historical examples like Hindi and English themselves, as well as Nagamese and Urdu . Hinglish is presented as a "great equalizer" that allows for deeper connection and expression, navigating both global and local worlds [Audio Summary].

We chat to actor, filmmaker and the author of Both Not Half, Jassa Ahluwalia We're ending our season with something truly special - a transformative conversation with Jassa Ahluwalia that we know will stay with you long after listening. Jassa is a British actor, writer, filmmaker and trade unionist, known for roles in Unforgotten, Ripper Street, and Peaky Blinders. Born in Coventry to a white English mother and Punjabi father. His hashtag #BothNotHalf emerged from a viral video and evolved into a movement exploring mixed identity. His TEDx talk "How Language Shapes Identity" has garnered over 200,000 views, and his BBC One documentary Am I English? won an Asian Media Award in 2022. In our conversation, Jassa shares how that viral Instagram video led to his powerful book Both Not Half: A Radical New Approach to Mixed Identity. This isn't just about personal identity. It's about revolutionising how leaders create belonging, moving from allyship to solidarity, and why challenging binary thinking is essential for modern organisations. Three simple words - "Both Not Half" - that could transform how your organisation thinks about identity, belonging, and true inclusion. As it's our season finale, we've also packed in Paul and Zoe's holiday reading and podcast recommendations to take with you over the break. We're 10 years old!!! And we’re still reelin’, reminiscing, and replaying the bangers that made our indie hearts beat faster. This week, we’re flashing back to the not so distant past - our Best of 2023 – a year that gave us Assamese jazz-pop, Urdu blues, Punjabi folk, and a Marathi abhanga with a guitar solo that’s soooo good, it deserves its own Aadhaar card. We even celebrated our 300th episode that featured a cult band from the early 2000s, and went gaga over a shoegaze dream pop band from Nepal who put across a strong case that momos from Nepal were the best EVVVAAAAAA! Bhai Mani Singh Ji Shahid (c.?-c.1737) was an eminent 18th century Sikh commander and theologian who captained the Khalsa through the dark days of the post-Banda Singh era genocides. A sagacious diplomat and preacher, he converted thousands to the Sikh fold before being executed by Lahore's Muslim-Hindu combine. This episodes draws upon the detailed works of Bhai Ratan Singh Bhangu in his Sri Gur Panth Prakash (mid-19th century) and Giani Gian Singh in his Shamsher Khalsa (early 20th century) that themselves reiterate primary eyewitness accounts to derive lessons from last days of Bhai Mani Singh the martyr.

As recently as 1928, a vast swathe of Asia – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal, Bhutan, Yemen, Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait – were bound together under a single imperial banner, an entity known officially as the ‘Indian Empire', or more simply as the Raj. It was the British Empire's crown jewel, a vast dominion stretching from the Red Sea to the jungles of Southeast Asia, home to a quarter of the world's population and encompassing the largest Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Zoroastrian communities on the planet. Its people used the Indian rupee, were issued passports stamped ‘Indian Empire', and were guarded by armies garrisoned in forts from the Bab el-Mandeb to the Himalayas. And then, in the space of just fifty years, the Indian Empire shattered. Five partitions tore it apart, carving out new nations, redrawing maps, and leaving behind a legacy of war, exile and division. Shattered Lands: Five Partitions and the Making of Modern Asia (William Collins and HarperCollins India, 2025) by Sam Dalrymple, for the first time, presents the whole story of how the Indian Empire was unmade. How a single, sprawling dominion became twelve modern nations. How maps were redrawn in boardrooms and on battlefields, by politicians in London and revolutionaries in Delhi, by kings in remote palaces and soldiers in trenches. Its legacies include civil war in Burma and ongoing insurgencies in Kashmir, Baluchistan and Northeast India, and the Rohingya genocide. It is a history of ambition and betrayal, of forgotten wars and unlikely alliances, of borders carved with ink and fire. And, above all, it is the story of how the map of modern Asia was made. Dalrymple's stunning history is based on deep archival research, previously untranslated private memoirs, and interviews in English, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, Konyak, Arabic and Burmese. From portraits of the key political players to accounts of those swept up in these wars and mass migrations, Shattered Lands is vivid, compelling, thought-provoking history at its best. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Hosted by Gagan Boparai, this episode features Ajaydeep Singh Dhaliwal, a powerful voice in Punjabi intellectual circles.Together, we uncover the deep-rooted issues plaguing Punjabi communities in Canada and India, the global political chessboard, and the psychological traps that shape modern identity and conflict.
Veteran historian Dr. Balwant Singh Dhillon returns to the Sikh Renaissance to discuss his latest book on the Hukamnamahs (edicts) of the Sikh Gurus. After almost a near-century, Dr. Dhillon is the first historian to review the extant Hukamnamah manuscripts and recompile them. In this episode he discusses his various findings, what these manuscripts reveal, and the multiple fabrications he identified on his scholarly journey.More importantly, these Hukamnamahs counter the myth of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, being a pacifist ascetic meditating his life away until called for Guruship. Contrastingly, they reveal an intelligent statesman and an astute Gurmukh engaged in both political maneuvering and converting the masses to Sikhi.Listen to find out more!

"One thing that's become abundantly clear from the ancient DNA revolution of the last 10 years is how important migration has been in the history of our species. So, of course, there has been hybridisation, cultural, genetic, linguistic. There is no such thing as a pure people, pure culture, pure language. Genes, culture and language do not map neatly onto each other. This book was a huge amount of work because the only way you can tell the story of Proto Indo European [the ancestor of Latin and Sanskrit and their daughter languages including English, German, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi and many, many others] is by combing the fields of linguistics, archeology and genetics. It's very fast moving and the point of writing the story now is that it's had this huge impetus from genetics" - Laura Spinney, author, Proto; How One Ancient Language Went Global talks to Manjula Narayan about the ancestor of the Indo European family of languages, the Yamnayas, the birth and death of languages, the great migrations out of the Steppes, the Harappan script, multiethnolects and why AI might be great for predicting language change Learn more about your ad choices. These concerts featured a repertoire, language and content that was both demanding and beyond the experience of a child. I was, however, entranced by the sound and feel of the music, even from an early age. My father would play tapes of Indian music for me and we would also listen to Bollywood on the radio,” Ahluwalia recalls. “So when a song came on that I wanted to learn, my mother would quickly write down the lyrics for me and I would sing along to learn the melody."

1Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One. Hi,Bob. You speak very good Chinese. Not really, Mary. I just know a little. Actually, not being able to speak a foreign language is a bit of a British trait or a particularly British characteristic. The British are generally considered to be lazy linguists. We just don't bother to learn another language. I guess the main reason is that when you travel around the world, you find that English is spoken almost everywhere. Yes,yes. We get by. We survive on just using our mother language. But you seem to love learning languages a lot. How many foreign languages can you speak? Not that many. A bit of German, some French, Polish a little, Chinese of course, a bit of Japanese. That's about it. I'm impressed. Well, what is the second most-spoken language in England? Is it Chinese? No, I don't think so. Then, that must be French. No.According to the recent census, 104 different languages are spoken in the UK and Polish is the second most spoken language, followed by Punjabi and Urdu. Then,do you have to learn a foreign language in school? No,it's not compulsory. But recently a campaign was launched to encourage everyone in the UK to learn at least 1,000 words of another language. It hopes to help Britain increase international trade. 1,000 words?1000个词?Yes.It's called the 1,000 Words Campaign because it says a vocabulary of 1,000 words would allow a speaker to hold a simple conversation. That sounds like a good idea. Yes.It gives you self-satisfaction and self-esteem if you can speak another language when you're travelling. And I think it also gives you an edge in a lot of different areas in the workplace. You feel good about learning a new skill and you feel good about yourself, and it boosts your confidence. Imagine going on a holiday to Spain and being able to speak to the locals. Of course it does make one feel good. And there are also the economic benefits of speaking another language. It gives you an advantage, especially if you are dealing with foreign companies. Yes.It also shows politeness and respect for other people by showing you have made an effort. You're right. In our latest episode of Saade Aala Radio, we dive into the bizarre and shocking story of YouTuber Jasbir Singh from Punjab and Jyoti Malhotra getting caught spying for Pakistan. We talk about how unbelievably idiotic and reckless this act is—not just for national security but for the entire Punjabi community. We also highlight the real consequence of such stupidity: the risk of losing access to Gurdwara Nankana Sahib, a sacred place for Sikhs that took years of diplomatic efforts to open. This is not just one person's mistake—it affects thousands. As always, we mix hard-hitting truths with humor, exposing the absurdity behind these actions and calling out the irresponsibility of social media fame-seekers.

The brass and dhol-led party band Red Baraat began as a Punjabi wedding band here in New York, but for the past 15 years they've brought their raucous energetic dance sound to everyone through a series of well-received albums and their memorable live shows. Drummer and bandleader Sunny Jain, infused the band with the sounds of his upbringing: music of the South Asian diaspora (Bollywood soundtracks, Jain Bhajans (devotional songs), and Bhangra ) injected with go-go, jazz, and rock. Red Baraat plays in-studio to celebrate their 15 year anniversary and the release of their new album, Bhangra Rangeela. Set list: 1. Bhangra Rangeela 2. Thums Up 3. Zindabad
