Many Australian businesses are allegedly registering employees as contractors to avoid paying legally required benefits, including superannuation, leave entitlements and insurance. Members of the Punjabi community have also been caught up in this illegal practice, known as ‘sham contracting'. A major new national report has found that young and newly arrived migrants, often unaware of the legal and financial differences between a TFN and an ABN, are among the most vulnerable. The ATO and Fair Work Ombudsman are now stepping up enforcement and warning employers of tougher penalties.

In this episode of Scripture Untangled, seasoned journalist Lorna Dueck speaks with Dr. Jeff Green, CBS Vice President of Scripture Translation about Bible translation, Indigenous languages, and the way Scripture in your heart language inspires hope, strengthens identity, and deepens faith. In this episode, Jeff and Lorna discuss: Jeff's journey from a church-rooted upbringing and studying math at Waterloo to discovering Biblical languages and Bible translation as his life's work. How the Canadian Bible Society works alongside Indigenous communities under local leadership to support Scripture translation in heritage languages. The healing and hope of Scripture in Indigenous languages: language loss, revival, community restoration, and the powerful truth that “God speaks my language.” Why Bible translation is not solo work, but involves church leaders, translators, reviewers, and whole communities. Jyoti Chand grew up the youngest child and only girl in a Punjabi immigrant family in West Covina, California, in the middle of a 95% Mexican neighborhood, in a gang-infiltrated area, in a household where her dad ironed her clothes, did the laundry, cooked the food, and showed up to every parent-teacher conference while her mom worked nights. She was spoiled with love. She was the class clown with a binder of printed jokes. She was the smart one, the good girl, the straight-A kid who also snuck out to Bong Fest, talked back to everyone, and graduated high school at 16. She was also someone who had no idea that alcohol was quietly shaping her entire story. In this episode of Sense of Self, Dr. Gowri Aragam sits down with Jyoti Chand, known to hundreds of thousands as Mama Jotes, a mom, a content creator, founder of Jyotes by Jyoti Chand, author of the graphic novel Fitting Indian, and one of the most genuinely funny and disarmingly honest voices on the internet. What starts as a warm, hilarious conversation about growing up first-generation in LA becomes something much more honest. A story about dual identity, undiagnosed ADHD, inherited anxiety and depression, a suicide attempt at 18 that her university tried to quietly erase, abusive relationships she didn't think she deserved better than, and the slow realization that the substance she thought was just fun was actually the main character in a story she desperately wanted to rewrite. And then she stopped drinking. And everything changed. 00:00 Cold Open and Retakes 00:54 Mom Life Small Talk 01:49 Name Origin and Fireworks 04:14 Growing Up West Covina 07:18 Assimilating and Blending In 11:57 Home Life and Superdad 16:17 Sibling Chaos and Teen Rebellion 22:10 Comedy as Survival 28:09 High School Anxiety and Coping 33:00 Family Mental Health Patterns 35:37 Modeling Coping Skills 36:20 Breaking Generational Cycles 37:27 Growing Up Too Fast 38:24 College Freedom Party Life 43:17 When Drinking Feeds Anxiety 45:00 Alcohol and Parenting Boundaries 47:18 Good Girl Bad Girl Split 52:51 Breakup Depression Spiral 56:40 Hospital Hold and Dorm Fallout 59:35 Therapy Break the Cycle 01:07:30 Writing as Healing Path 01:11:39 Self Worth and Relationships 01:12:41 Choosing Love Through Discomfort 01:15:01 Brunch Meltdown and the Ring 01:18:13 Reparative Love and Co Regulation 01:23:31 Alcohol After Marriage and Motherhood 01:27:20 Moderation Fails and Pandemic Spiral 01:28:23 Dry January and Quit Like a Woman 01:35:19 Sobriety Fuels Creativity and Growth 01:43:02 Self Esteem and Resilience Muscle 01:48:06 Who I Am Now and Closing About Our Guest: Jyoti Chand, known online as Mama Jotes, is a content creator, author, and advocate for first-generation Americans navigating identity, mental health, and sobriety. Hindus claim their ancestors raised their elder sons as Sikhs out of genuine devotion to the Khalsa. Puneet Sahani and others repeat this claim endlessly in both English and Punjabi. This episode proves it is a lie, documented, evidenced and irrefutable. The historical record tells a completely different story. Bhai Sukha Singh Shahid Mari Kambo converted of his own free will and his own family drugged him, cut his sacred Kes and killed his infant daughter. Master Tara Singh converted and his father threw him out of the house. Pandit Har Kishan converted and his orthodox Hindu father fainted in Maharajah Ranjit Singh's court cursing him for destroying Sanataan. Professor Sahib Singh converted and the family Pandit grabbed his belongings declaring him polluted. Swami Ram Tirath studied the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, became Sikh and his family disowned him immediately.Gurdino was never a Hindu practice. Giani Gian Singh's Shamsher Khalsa documents how Sehajdhari Khatris and Jatts raised their elder sons as Khalsas as a deliberate generational investment in Sikhi. The Saakhi of Guru Amardas Mahlla 3rd and Guru Arjan explicitly differentiate Sikh identity from Hindu identity centuries before the Khalsa was created. The Sehajdharis were never Hindus. Gurdino was never a Hindu gift.Delivered in Punjabi for the Punjabi speaking Sikh community globally.

On the Saturday May 9, 2026 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet YouTuber, actor, screenwriter, comedian, and musician Jasmeet Raina. His series “Late Bloomer,” a dramedy about a millennial Sikh content creator balancing online ambitions, family expectations, community pressures, and personal growth, is in its third season on Crave right now. Critics call it funny, heartfelt, and eye-opening. He rose to fame in the late 2000s/early 2010s on YouTube with sharp, satirical sketches about growing up in a Punjabi immigrant family in Guelph, Ontario. His irreverent humor on culture, family, and identity earned him millions of views and a loyal following but he stepped back from YouTube around 2018, to created, write, produce, and star in the semi-autobiographical “Late Bloomer.” Then, we’ll meet actor Shamier Anderson. He’s best known for roles like Deputy Marshal Xavier Dolls in Wynonna Earp, Trevante Cole in Invasion (Apple TV+), and the memorable Mr. Nobody / The Tracker in John Wick: Chapter 4. He’s also involved in initiatives supporting Black Canadian talent, like co-founding awards and events with his brother, actor Stephan James. Today we’re talking about how he made the switch from law enforcement to acting, studying kung fu and his latest role, playing controversial Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson. “Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story” is a satirical comedy miniseries for Paramount+ and GameTV that focuses on Johnson’s 1988 Seoul Olympics 100m gold medal win (and world record), the subsequent doping scandal that stripped him of it, and a “definitely-not-biased” retelling that explores the legacy, the pressure, and perhaps the bigger picture of athletics in that era. Finally, we spend some time with Nicholas Braun. You’ve seen him in supporting roles in films like “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “How to Be Single” and “Zola,” although the 6'7" actor is best known as the awkward, ambitious Cousin Greg Hirsch on Crave’s “Succession,” a role that earned him three Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Today, we’re talking about his latest project, “The Sheep Detectives,” a new, all-star whodunnit comedy now playing in theatres, about a flock of sheep attempt to solve a murder mystery. You heard me right. This bizarre but crowd-pleasing murder mystery for the whole family that could have been titled “CSI: Livestock.” Murder, talking sheep and philosophy intertwine to create echoes of “Babe: A Pig in the City” and “Old Yeller.” Nicolas Braun plays Tim, the only, and rather clumsy, police officer in a small town, who investigates the murder of the local shepherd played by Hugh Jackman, as a flock of crime-solving sheep try to crack the case first.

Queen Victoria was Empress of India. She was also godmother to the children of the man whose kingdom she helped destroy. Victoria called him “your affectionate friend.”But as Polly Putnam tells me, it was a strange relationship between conqueror and conquered.Polly is the Collections Curator at Historic Royal Palaces, the historian behind Netflix's Bridgerton, and the curator of The Last Princesses of Punjab — her 31st exhibition, and the hardest one she has ever done. She did not want to tell this story from above. She wanted South Asian voices in the room.In this episode, we cover why Sophia sold suffragette newspapers outside Hampton Court, why Bamba had snowballs thrown at her on the way to medical school, why Catherine told a Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, “I'll be that person,” why Duleep Singh died with a Bible at his bedside despite taking Sikh initiation, and the revelation that almost everything in this family's London history happened in Kensington, including the birth of the women's suffrage movement itself.

On his Australia tour, we recorded an interview with UK-based Mohan Singh, founder of the Sikh Awareness Society, about the increasing risks of online grooming for young people and the need for open conversations around relationships and sex education in Punjabi families. Singh says grooming is often a gradual process of controlling a young person's trust and thinking, with digital platforms now a major entry point. He urges parents to watch for warning signs such as changes in behaviour, secrecy, unexplained gifts, and emotional withdrawal, and to speak honestly with children about safe relationships, boundaries, and how to report concerns. With decades of experience supporting victims, Singh has also appeared in the BBC Inside Out documentary on grooming.
