Yesterday we spoke to Laura Reiley, a writer at Cornell University whose only child died by suicide after suffering from anxiety and depression. Laura shared her daughter Sophie's story in an essay for The New York Times because while she had been seeing a human therapist, Sophie had also turned to a therapy chatbot for help between sessions and it was the chatbot that she confided in when she chose to end her life. fWotD Episode 3024: Rani of Jhansi Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles.The featured article for Friday, 15 August 2025, is Rani of Jhansi.The Rani of Jhansi (born Manikarnika Tambe; 1828 or 1835 – 18 June 1858), also known as Rani Lakshmibai, was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The queen consort of the princely state of Jhansi from 1843 to 1853, she assumed its leadership after the outbreak of conflict and fought several battles against the British. Her life and deeds are celebrated in modern India and she remains a potent symbol of Indian nationalism.Born into a Marathi family in Varanasi, Manikarnika Tambe was married to the raja of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao, at a young age, taking the name Rani Lakshmibai. The couple had one son but he died young, and so when Gangadhar Rao was on his deathbed in 1853, he adopted Damodar Rao, a young relative, to be his successor. The British East India Company, the overlord of Jhansi, refused to recognise this succession and annexed Jhansi under the Doctrine of Lapse, ignoring the Rani's vigorous protests to the Governor-General Lord Dalhousie.In May 1857, the Indian troops stationed at Jhansi mutinied and massacred most of the British in the town; the Rani's complicity and participation in these events was and remains contested. She took over rulership of Jhansi and recruited an army to see off incursions from neighbouring states. Although her relations with the British were initially neutral, they decided to treat her as an enemy: Major General Hugh Rose attacked and captured Jhansi in March and April 1858. The Rani escaped the siege on horseback and joined other rebel leaders at Kalpi, where Rose defeated them on 22 May. The rebels fled to Gwalior Fort, where they made their last stand; the Rani died there in battle.After the rebellion, the Rani's name and actions became closely associated with nationalist movements in India. Her legend, influenced by Hindu mythology, became hugely influential because of its universal applicability. She was regarded as a great heroine by the Indian independence movement and remains revered in modern India, although Dalit communities tend to view her negatively. Marathi cinema is the oldest film industry in India and from Dadasaheb Phalke making the first full feature length movie more than 100 years ago to Prabhat films all the way to 2016's Sairat,, you can directly connect the dots from this rich legacy to every corner of India's film industry today.So on this SPOTLIGHT episode of Trust Me, I Know What I'm Doing, and yes, I'm aware of the mild irony of this, नमस्कार आणि आपल्य सर्वांचा स्वागत करतो. आणि नेहमीप्रमाणे, आज आपण या मुलाखतीत  अंग्रेजित बोलणार आहोत! So, let's focus on how this Marathi film legacy is undergoing a contemporary revival at the intersection of art, business, and community, through the North American Film Association (NAFA) and its founder, Abhi Gholap. As a serial entrepreneur, investor, and passionate Marathi film enthusiast, Abhi has personified that bridging of tradition and today's film landscape, and is the convener of the upcoming 2025 North American Film Festival in San Jose. Notably, he is the producer of the acclaimed award-winning 2011 film Deool, a movie that not only achieved commercial and critical success but also underscored the social impact and artistic power of Marathi storytelling. His experience with Deool shaped his unique approach to filmmaking, blending an entrepreneurial drive with a keen sensitivity to meaningful, community-centered stories. And now with the non-profit NAFA, and the focused  lens of the upcoming 2025 North American Film Festival, it was great to explore how Abhi and NAFA are creating new opportunities—connecting local voices with international platforms and using film as a common language of inclusion and growth.
