hello, hello, hello. welcome to episode twelve of the podcast, hosted by the chaotic energy of @tyrathetaurus on twitter, tik tok and instagram. today we are going to be discussing the controversy surrounding the Asha Sanctuary in New York State. Tracy Murphy, the owner of Asha, has been running this sanctuary for over a decade. she recently came in contact with two cows that escaped a beef farm and wandered on to her property. she immediately reported the two cows to the SPCA where she awaited someone to claim ownership of the cows. the two cows were in her care for about 10 days before..well.. things turned. Scott Gregson, a New York State trooper, showed up at Asha to attempt to retrieve the cows that he planned to slaughter at 2 years old. after refusing to return the cows, Tracy was arrested and later released the same day. the case gained recognition from vegan activist and actor, Joaquin Phoenix, who spoke out in support of Tracy Murphy and her desire to save those two cows. in this episode, we are joined by Matt Albert, the attorney for Tracy Murphy and one of my best friend's, @torontoveganmom! we discuss the facts of this case, state some opinions and clear up ongoing allegations and rumors surrounding the case. so, grab a kombucha, grab a wine glass, grab a reusable water bottle and come be my friend for an hour or so? welcome to episode seven of the show. glad you are stopping by. TRIGGER WARNING for this episode: sexual assault and violence. in this week's episode, i get vulnerable with you guys in an unscripted timeline of my experiences dealing with internalized hatred for my blackness and dating white men. our society has historically hyper-sexualized black women and this tradition has continued into my childhood, teenage years and adulthood. sit back, grab a kombucha, a glass of wine or a snack as I relive what it is like to grow up in my world full of hatred, racism, sexual violence and assault.
welcome back. crazy times were living in, right? in this week's episode of the podcast, hosted by tyrathetaurus, we dive into the controversy that surrounds a New York TImes Bestselling vegan cookbook "Thug Kitchen". Thug Kitchen has been a blog and a cookbook for a few years now and it has sparked conversations in PoC spaces and platforms. People of color have expressed anger and resentment towards the creators of Thug Kitchen due to their appropriation of black culture, slang and oppression. Towards 15:00, we discuss the back story of how Thug Kitchen was created. Around 44:41 we talk about how dehumanizing PoC feelings and emotions is common in white spaces and society and what coded language and phrases are. Last towards 46:34, we discuss exactly how I personally feel about the cookbook, the creators and the book's usage of black oppression, ebonics and AAVE. Grab a drink or two, and come be my friend for an hour?
welcome to episode five of kombucha hour. in today's episode we will be discussing the contraversy surrounding the new impossible burger whopper at burger king and their animal testing. this is a hot topic in the vegan community as of late. some vegans believe you are not vegan if you consume the burger, some vegans believe you are plant based if you consume it and others see a bigger picture. in the first half of the episode, i discuss the actual study conducted on animals (rats) in order for impossible foods to receive their GRAS certification through the FDA. i also give tips on how to order vegan at most fast food chains. around 43:33 i start to give my personal opinion on the impossible burger, their brand & how i feel as a vegan about their testing on animals. towards the end around 1:07:38, i discuss the frustration associated with living in a non vegan world that is full of everyday products that have ingredients that were once tested on animals. so sit back, grab a kombucha and enjoy the episode!
episode four: this week's episode is all about the controversial banned superbowl commerical from the animal rights organization PETA, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA decided to use the famous protest style: kneeling, coined by former 49ers quarterback, Colin Kapernick, as a way to advocate against speciesism. everyone has different views on the ad that never made it to the superbowl and we discuss those perspectives in my longest episode to date. 1:00:00 we discuss different historical black liberation organizations that have intersected veganism with black rights such as the MOVE organization, founded by John Africa. Towards 1:18:00 we get into the politics of black veganism and the fast food industry.
