In this episode, Lex speaks with Marcelo Ruiz de Olano, Co-Founder of KPK (Karpatkey), an on-chain asset management firm born out of Gnosis DAO. Marcelo recounts KPK's evolution from stewarding Gnosis's $1B treasury to advising on more than $2B for leading protocols like ENS, Balancer, and the Ethereum Foundation. The discussion dives into the mechanics of non-custodial treasury management - balancing governance, security, and risk - along with strategies across lending, liquidity provision, and stablecoin yields. Marcelo also shares why the rise of large Ethereum treasury companies could be a turning point for DeFi, injecting institutional-scale liquidity and potentially making ETH more liquid than Bitcoin. NOTABLE DISCUSSION POINTS:Origins and Scale of On-Chain Treasury ManagementKPK spun out of Gnosis DAO, which had one of the earliest and largest on-chain treasuries (~$1B). From there, KPK evolved into an independent manager now advising on over $2B of DAO and foundation treasuries (ENS, Balancer, Ethereum Foundation, etc.), pioneering non-custodial, fully on-chain asset management practices.Conservative, Mission-Driven Approach vs. Yield-ChasingUnlike many DeFi actors during “DeFi Summer,” KPK deliberately rejected risky high-yield strategies. Instead, they prioritized capital preservation and mission alignment—for example, ensuring ENS's treasury only supports Ethereum-strengthening initiatives (like minority client staking or avoiding centralization risks). This contrarian, values-driven approach built trust and positioned them as long-term stewards of DeFi treasuries.Transformative Potential of Ethereum Treasury CompaniesMarcelo highlights that emerging Ethereum treasury firms (similar to MicroStrategy's BTC play) could deploy $10B+ in ETH treasuries. A single such “mega whale” could inject unprecedented liquidity into DeFi—making ETH potentially more liquid than BTC, bootstrapping entire verticals (DEX liquidity, lending, insurance), and creating a flywheel where treasury strategies directly accelerate Ethereum's adoption and price stability. In this episode of The Defiant Podcast, Paul Frambot, Co-Founder of Morpho, details how DeFi is transforming the financial industry by intersecting with fintech, shifting value to network users, and reshaping how lending protocols work. He outlines the evolution from early peer-to-peer lending to today's permissionless, immutable infrastructure, highlighting Morpho's product design, its approach to risk management, and specific use cases in institutional finance and global wallet integration. Discussions cover the role of risk managers, transparency benefits, the emergence of DeFi as backbone infrastructure for fintechs, and how platforms like Coinbase now use Morpho behind the scenes.Paul reflects on how Morpho enables global liquidity, allows businesses and individuals to create custom lending markets, and how DeFi's open competition leads to better rates and more efficient markets. The conversation wraps with thoughts on unsecured lending, the path to real-world financial product integration, and Morpho's long-term vision to become the foundational protocol for global financing.Chapters:00:00 Fintech disruption, DeFi's impact on infrastructure 01:21 Founding Morpho: backstory and protocol design 03:04 Pushing for permissionless, immutable protocol infrastructure 04:16 Institutional adoption, wallet integrations, and B2B use cases 07:01 Managing risk and collateral in open protocols 10:32 Shift in institutional engagement and business adoption 15:20 Native on-chain fund issuance, regulations, and international frameworks 17:04 Equity and securities as next steps for on-chain finance 19:03 Real-world example: Coinbase leveraging Morpho for global lending liquidity 20:28 End-to-end DeFi integrations: wallet abstraction and feature parity 22:26 Four core benefits when fintechs use DeFi as backend 24:07 Transparency, self-custody, and proof of reserves in DeFi 25:06 Institutional desire for infrastructure ownership—not just distribution 26:29 Competitive rates: DeFi vs. traditional finance lending 27:51 Barriers for banks: regulation, compliance, privacy, and operational hurdles 30:00 Privacy on-chain: transaction anonymity vs. amount privacy 32:29 How DeFi lending markets evolved: competition and network effects 34:00 Differing visions: Morpho as infrastructure vs. Aave as integrated bank 37:12 Market size: overcollateralized and undercollateralized lending potential 38:04 How DeFi could unlock unsecured credit 41:24 Under-collateralized lending, trust, and on-chain identity primitives 44:28 Morpho's long-term vision and the future of DeFi/fintech convergence
Description: This week, we're digging into the market's reaction to the latest CPI data and what it means for the macro landscape as we look ahead to the Jackson Hole symposium. We'll discuss expectations for the event, the ongoing debate around potential new Federal Reserve appointments, and provide an update on the tariff situation. The main event in crypto is Ethereum's explosive +23% move on the week, with LDO moving in concert. We'll break down the key drivers behind the rally, including a massive $1.8 billion in ETF inflows, over $2 billion in large Digital Asset Trust (DAT) purchases, and a significant regulatory clarification that liquid staking derivatives (LSDs) will avoid security status. While ETH is technically overbought, we note that funding rates have not yet become excessively rich.We then look at the future of the Ethereum ecosystem, providing an update on the staking exit queue and the evolving discussion around new products like staking ETFs versus the established DATs. We'll also touch on strong network fundamentals, with daily transactions averaging 1.7 million in August. Finally, we have game-changing news from Coinbase. The company is rolling out DEX trading directly in the main Coinbase app for U.S. users, unlocking access to millions of on-chain assets, particularly on Base. As a result, available liquidity has shrunk and temporarily sent the interest rate the protocol charges borrowers to more than 10%.~This episode is sponsored by iTrust Capital~iTrustCapital | Get $100 Funding Reward + No Monthly Fees when you sign up using our custom link! ➜ https://bit.ly/iTrustPaulGuest: Stani Kulechov, Founder of AaveAave website ➜ https://bit.ly/AaveSite00:00 Intro00:17 Sponsor: iTrust Capital00:34 BNY Money Market01:54 Aave skyrocketing02:30 Explain: Ethereum Treasury companies strategy using Aave06:00 Ethereum Supply shock incoming?07:30 Could yield rates increase?08:28 How does Genius Act & Clarity Act affect Aave?10:50 $GHO Stablecoin 12:52 Tokenized stocks & ETFs coming to Aave?15:00 Will Robinhood use Aave?17:00 Biggest Aave chain in 2025: Arbitrum vs Avalanche vs Base?18:22 Bonus Aave Rewards19:15 Avara family of products: Upcoming updates to watch20:25 XRP & Solana on Aave?21:35 Outro#XRP #ethereum #Crypto~Ethereum Demand Skyrockets on Aave!

Co-host is Mauro Halve. Met Daniël Mol bespreken we elke week de stand van de cryptomarkt. Apart from incentivising market participants to secure the network through inflationary rewards, many consider staking as an equivalent of stock dividend yield. As a result, although Bitcoin is regarded as digital gold, protocols are looking for ways to increase its utilisation in DeFi and, ultimately, generate yield. Nowadays, while newer networks are struggling to attract investors and sustain a healthy, decentralised validator set, more established blockchains capture the lion's share of PoS actors. However, in a constant race for profit basis points, centralised consolidation of stakers seems inevitable. Lex chats with Stani Kulechov - founder and CEO of Aave, a leading decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol. They explore the evolution of DeFi, Aave's growth, and its architectural shift from a peer-to-peer model to pooled liquidity. Stani reflects on the early days of DeFi, the impact of the FTX collapse, and the increasing adoption of DeFi over centralized exchanges. They discuss Aave's strategies for attracting assets, the importance of capital efficiency, and future innovations, including the tokenization of real-world assets and the role of stablecoins. Notable discussion points: 1. Aave Reaches $40 Billion in Net Deposits: Stani Kulechov shared that Aave has achieved a record-breaking $40 billion in net deposits and $25 billion in active liquidity, making it the largest DeFi lending protocol ever by total value locked (TVL). 2. DeFi's Evolution from Peer-to-Peer to Liquidity Hubs: The conversation detailed Aave's architectural shift from early peer-to-peer lending models to pooled liquidity and now to a hub-and-spoke model with Aave V4 — designed to balance capital efficiency and risk segregation for both native crypto and real-world assets (RWAs). 3. The Rise of Real-World Assets and Stablecoins in DeFi: Kulechov emphasized that tokenized real-world assets (like treasuries) and decentralized stablecoins (such as Aave's GHO) are reshaping the DeFi landscape, predicting RWAs will outgrow both stablecoins and native crypto assets in total value locked within five years. MENTIONED IN THE CONVERSATION Topics: Aave, Lens Protocol, GHO, Horizon, FTX, Project Guardian, AaveDAO, MakerDAO, Web3, DeFi, Lending, stablecoins, tokens, RWA, decentralized finance, capital markets, DAO, Digital Assets ABOUT THE FINTECH BLUEPRINT
