De vierde editie van Bitcoin Amsterdam trok deze week opnieuw veel bezoekers naar de hoofdstad. De conferentie verhuisde naar een nieuwe locatie en dat gaf het geheel een ander karakter. Onze co-host Mauro Halve was erbij. Hij zag grote namen, interessante talks en een goede sfeer. Het moment dat hem het meest bijbleef, kwam van de Luxemburgse minister van Financiën, die vertelde dat zijn land al eerder één procent van de reserves in bitcoin had gestoken en dat pas achteraf wereldkundig maakte. Ook vriend van de show Bart Mol stond op het podium. Hij benadrukte dat bitcoin alleen digital gold kan worden als het eerst digital cash blijft. Mauro ziet dat de conferentie in vier jaar is veranderd van een niche-evenement met vooral een lokaal publiek naar een internationale bijeenkomst met een institutionele uitstraling. Dat uitte zich ook in de bezoekers: waar hij eerder bijna de enige in pak was, liepen er dit jaar veel meer rond. De vraag is wat die verschuiving zegt over de fase waarin bitcoin zich nu bevindt. Ondanks de huidige dip in de markt leek dat op de conferentie weinig invloed te hebben op de sfeer. Want echt goed gaat het niet op de cryptomarkt. De koers zakte tot ongeveer 90.000 dollar per Bitcoin. Dat heeft vooral te maken met rente- en hoogtevrees op alle financiële markten. Daarbij lijkt het langzaam wel tijd om afscheid te nemen van de vierjaarscyclus van Bitcoin, en misschien ook de huidige trend omhoog. Verder was er nieuws over Aave. In verschillende publicaties werd gemeld dat het DeFi-platform als eerste een MiCAR-vergunning zou hebben gekregen, maar dat klopt niet. Het lenen en uitlenen dat centraal staat bij Aave valt niet onder MiCAR en de dienst zelf is decentraal georganiseerd. De vergunning geldt voor een commercieel dochterbedrijf dat een wisseldienst aanbiedt tussen euro’s en stablecoins. Daardoor kunnen gebruikers direct geld storten en opnemen via Aave, wat het platform toegankelijker maakt, al blijft het daadwerkelijke lenen en uitlenen nog ongereguleerd. Een jaar na de invoering van MiCAR zijn er inmiddels meer dan tachtig partijen met een vergunning. Banken uit meerdere Europese landen hebben zich aangesloten en ook fintechbedrijven zoals Trading212 en Revolut kregen goedkeuring. In Nederland kwamen onder meer Blox en Coinmerce erbij. Toezichthouders worstelen ondertussen met verschillen in toezicht. Er gaan geruchten dat in december een pakket wordt gepresenteerd dat moet leiden tot meer centrale aansturing vanuit Europa. Sommige landen staan daar positief tegenover, terwijl andere zich fel verzetten.
