    Buying a new mountain bike is always fun, but it can also be super confusing and overwhelming due to ever-evolving technology and how quickly the dollars add up.  Rather than spend endless hours scouring the internet for information, the best thing you can do is go to your local bike shop and talk to an expert. So that’s what we did.  We sat down with Josh Mueller, the manager of Guthrie’s Bicycle shop in Bountiful, UT, just north of Salt Lake City.  Josh shares his expertise on mountain bikes and talks about what to consider when buying a new bike, from deciding on the right type of mountain bike based on your goals, to consideration on suspension, wheel size, and carbon vs. aluminum frames.

    Maurice Isserman is a professor of American History at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY and the author of several books on the history of mountaineering.  We spoke to Maurice about his two latest books, The Winter Army: The World War II Odyssey of the 10th Mountain Division, America's Elite Alpine Warriors and Continental Divide: A History of American Mountaineering. Maurice is also the author of the award-winning book Fallen Giants: A History of Himalayan Mountaineering from the Age of Empire to the Age of Extremes.

    To kick off season 3, we sat down with a local Salt Lake legend, Steve Achelis, who is quite possibly the most interesting man in the Wasatch.  Steve is a software entrepreneur with a deep passion for outdoor recreation and wilderness safety.  Over the years, he’s used his engineering skills to develop various software applications geared towards outdoor recreationists and medical personnel, one being the hugely popular Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Map.  We sat down with Steve to learn about some of his projects, get a behind the scenes look at how he created the map, and hear about his experience as a Search and Rescue volunteer.

    For this month's episode, we sat down with former ultra-runners Cynthia and Ron Daniels to talk about the Wasatch 100, which has become one of the premier events on the ultra-running circuit, known for its tough terrain and beautiful scenery.  Cynthia participated in 12 Wasatch 100s during the 90s and early 2000s, supported by her husband Ron, and they gave us an inside look at what it takes to prepare for and finish the race.  Along the way, we also learned a bit about the evolution of ultra-running and heard some funny stories from the trail.  The race will mark its 40th anniversary this September.  Visit the website to learn more about its history: https://wasatch100.com/.

    Injury Prevention for Outdoor Recreationists

    In February, we sat down with Julia Reich, PT, DPT, to discuss common injuries seen in outdoor recreationists, how to prevent them, and what to do when an injury occurs.  Even though the episode focused heavily on skiing, the basic themes apply to all activities and are especially important when transitioning from one season’s activities to the next.  So, we’re releasing the episode today as a bonus. Julia is originally from New Jersey and practices outpatient physical therapy at Alta View Hospital in Sandy, UT.  Outside of work, you can find her laying down skin tracks in the backcountry, ripping singletrack on her mountain bike, bagging peaks, or riding the lifts at Alta.  An endurance athlete herself, she understands the concerns and frustrations of active individuals when it comes to injuries.  Follow Julia on Instagram at @ja_reich.
