Misty Skolnick, co-owner of Uncle Jerry's Pretzels in Lancaster County is our first guest on the program today! Misty shares how her co-owner father Jerry began the company in 1988--delivering pretzels in the Delaware Valley--as well as the company's growth and development from local business to having a national presence. Uncle Jerry's Pretzels have been free of oil, sugar, preservatives and article dyes since the company's inception. Skolnick discusses how this comes into play today, with new Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s recent warnings to PepsiCo, General Mills and other large food companies that one of his top priorities will be eliminating artificial dyes from our nation’s food supply to combat growing rates of chronic disease and other health issues among Americans. Retired FBI agent Scott Payne also joins the show to discuss his new book, Code Name: Pale Horse: How I Went Undercover to Expose America's Nazis. Payne, a decorated agent dubbed the “Hillbilly Donnie Brasco,” takes readers along with him on some of the most terrifying and riskiest assignments in FBI history. He went deep undercover with the lethal Outlaw Motorcycle Club in Massachusetts; to the front lines of the opioid epidemic in Tennessee; and infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in Alabama. Through it all, he stayed married to the love of his life, raised two girls, and spent his Sundays at church, sustained by family and faith. Two entrepreneurs created a preservative-free, clean meat snack company  -Joburg Meats - that produces traditional South African biltong using only beef, apple cider vinegar, salt, and spices - making it ideal for low-carb and health-conscious consumers.Jon Engleson and Yusef Baumgarten, the founders of Joburg Meats are bringing traditional South African biltong to the American market with a focus on clean ingredients and quality sourcing. Unlike conventional jerky, which is cooked with sugars and preservatives, their biltong is naturally cured for two weeks using only beef, apple cider vinegar, salt, and spices. The meat comes from pasture-raised, grass-fed cattle from South America, where traditional farming practices are still the norm. The conversation takes an interesting turn when Yusef shares his personal experience of losing 10 pounds in one week simply by switching from eating babka (a sweet bread) to biltong for breakfast. The company is expanding their line to include new flavors like Korean BBQ and truffle, plus developing clean versions of traditional salamis without nitrates or preservatives.Did You Know...?One of the founders was originally a tech professional who also practiced as an energy healer and EMT for 15 years. This unexpected background led him to be particularly conscious about creating clean, additive-free products, as he had developed sensitivity to testing food quality through his healing work.NOTABLE QUOTE"You kind of muscle test each product. You're like, is this really good? Is this really not good? And you test and nope, no good. I'm like, okay I'm going to need it anyway. Okay. When it came to this built tongue, I was introduced to it. And I don't know why subconsciously I did a muscle test and ask, is this a good product? Is this healthy for me? And I got a confirmed solid yes."Send Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. She explains that she never really aspired to be an entrepreneur, but was inspired to start Oddball after becoming frustrated with "catfish foods" - highly processed products masquerading as healthy. Also, seeing more diverse role models in entrepreneurship gave her the courage to make the leap. When she was younger, she did not see female founders that "looked like her". So in the beginning of her career, the thought of starting up on your own was too daunting. We are also talking about the importance of meaningful work, making a difference in the world and meaningful relationships. Sophia explains that as she has grown, she has learned to rely on different friends for different needs, rather than expecting one person to fulfill all her needs. She openly shares her challenges with stress and anxiety, and finding ways to truly relax and recharge. She finds solace in activities like travel, exercise, and discovering new, beautifully curated spaces. Connecting with other entrepreneurs also helps provide perspective and motivation when she struggles.Sophia started Oddball to create a healthy, minimally processed snack inspired by how ate growing up in Hong Kong and Singapore: balanced and whole food-based eating. The goal is to bring bach the fun and joy into snacking, without the guilt or pressure associated with many health foods today.Sophia is gearing up for a nationwide launch by the fall and discusses the lengthy prosedd of perfecting the product formulating and building out the team and supply chain to support the larger launch.Follow and learn more about my guest today:Instagram: Sophia Cheng LinkedIN: Sophia ChengInstagram: Oddball WorldWebsite: Oddball WorldTo learn more about SHIFT HAPPENS, click here To learn more about Claudia's business Curated Conversations and her Salons in New York, Zurich and Berlin, click hereYou can also connect with Claudia on Instagram @shifthappens.podcast and LinkedIn at ClaudiaMahlerNYCThis podcast is created, produced and hosted by Claudia Mahler.Social Media support Magdalena Reckendrees

The conversation also touched on the challenges faced during the product development phase, including sourcing sustainable ingredients and ensuring the bars met high taste and nutritional standards.
