A version of this essay was published by Deccan Herald at https://www.deccanherald.com/opinion/let-s-make-our-own-planes-3607351June 23rd was a very sad anniversary: it was exactly 40 years ago that Air India Kanishka, Flight AI 182 (Montreal-London-Delhi), a Boeing 747, was blown up in the sky off Ireland, killing all 329 on board. There has never been closure, because the Canadian government stonewalled the investigation into how alleged Khalistani terrorists on their soil perpetrated one of the worst airline disasters in history. The black box and cockpit voice recorder were recovered, and confirmed a loud explosion and sudden loss of communications and an explosive decompression, consistent with a bomb in baggage. Separately, two baggage handlers at Narita were killed when another bomb linked to the same terror group exploded on the ground on flight AI 301 on the Toronto-Tokyo-Bangkok-Delhi route. On June 12th, 2025, the as-yet unsolved crash-landing of AI 171 (Ahmedabad-London) killed all but one of 242 on board, and at least 35 people on the ground, as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner failed just after take-off. The black box has been recovered, and India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau was able to decode it. The detailed results will take another couple of weeks. Fortunately, the black box didn't have to be sent to the US because they would have an incentive to exonerate Boeing.Indeed there is already a media narrative of a) incompetence of the Indian pilots, b) poor maintenance by Air India. While there have been previous complaints about broken seats and entertainment systems, there was a clear objective to limit reputational damage to already beleaguered Boeing. Whistleblower reports have long suggested shoddy manufacturing practices especially on jets earmarked for delivery overseas.Boeing appears to be an engineering-driven company that was ruined as the focus shifted to bean-counting and finance, ever since they took over McDonnell Douglas in 1997, but paradoxically allowed the latter's cost-cutting managers to dominate. Instead of innovating, they now tend to recycle old designs. A 2022 Netflix documentary, “Downfall: The Case Against Boeing”, is scathing in its accusations.India is building the infrastructure for significant growth in air travel, to the extent that the hostile Financial Times mocked it with a story titled “Air India crash tests Narendra Modi's ambition to get his country flying”, blaming Air India and the airline regulator (but not Boeing). All this has implications for India, considering that Air India ordered 220 Boeing aircraft and another 350 from Airbus, while Indigo ordered 500 Airbus planes. That's many billions of dollars. The obvious question is: why isn't India making these commercial aircraft? Surely aerospace is a growth sector for India? Yes, there will be offset-based sub-assembly manufacturing, and maintenance operations, but why not India's own passenger aircraft?Brazil's Embraer, Russia's UAC and China's COMAC are eyeing the cosy Airbus-Boeing duopoly. Strategic autonomy suggests India should also strive for its own design. There are military reasons too. Warfare is changing, and drones and missiles are becoming more important, though fighter aircraft remain critical. India is developing the Tejas and the newly-approved AMCA, but there is the salutary tale of the indigenous HF-24 Marut, phased out because of underpowered engines, inadequate infrastructure, and poor coordination between HAL, the IAF, and the government; also no private sector involvement and the lure of imports.India has to build its own fighter jets, and especially jet engines like Kaveri: India is last in line for foreign engine-makers, and anyway, they keep the kill switches. India may be able to sell fighter jets to many countries, along with the battle-tested BrahMos, Lakshya and Akashteer, so spending on them is an investment with likely returns. There is still the siren-song of the US F-35, the Russian Su-57, and so on. There is, ironically, a British-owned F-35B sitting, forlorn, in the rain, on the tarmac at Trivandrum airport since June 15th. It has a) fuel issues, b) hydraulic problems with STOL, c) other problems. This $100+-million jet may end up having to be hauled back in a big transport plane, unable to take off on its own. Local trolls advertised it on OLX for a mere $4 million for scrap.British specialists were flown in, but couldn't fix it. They await Americans now. Obviously, even the closest allies do not get full technology transfer.Let us also remember that the first F-35 built under license by Mitsubishi in Japan ended up in the Pacific Ocean. The pilot, who died, was blamed for ‘spatial disorientation', not Lockheed Martin. The black box was damaged, so the story ends there.Suffice to say that in both civil and military aircraft it is time for India to get its act together.775 words, 29 June 2025The AI-generated podcast based on this essay is here. There have been huge increases in phishing globally over the past 12 months - and that phishing itself is undergoing a significant transformation. Both of these risk leaving people and businesses exposed going into 2025. Growing risks of phishing links in 2025 Netskope's Threat Labs researchers have found that: Phishing is surging globally, representing a major growing cybersecurity threat going into 2025: The number of users clicking on phishing links tripled in 2024, up to 8.4 out of every 1,000 users. This is a massive increase and represents a significantly bigger threat posed by phishing to people and organisations. The main factors leading to this increase are cognitive fatigue (with users constantly being bombarded with phishing attempts) and the creativity and adaptability of the attackers in delivering harder-to-detect baits. Phishing is fundamentally transforming, leaving many people and organisations with an outdated understanding of the threat. Unusually, the growth in phishing was driven by links shared through cloud applications, which were clicked on ten percentage points more than banking applications (27% of total clicks vs 17%). Microsoft 365 was the top target; other major targets included Adobe, DocuSign and Yahoo (see attached examples of what these phishing attacks look like in practice). This represents an evolution of phishing from primarily targeting money (e.g. via access to personal banking) to targeting data - reflective of the expansion of our digital lives and a shift in strategy from those carrying out phishing attacks in light of the growing value of data and its ubiquity in people's everyday lives. People are still the first line of cybersecurity defence, but these findings point to the fact that we have not improved understanding and education at the pace of technological change. With so much effort to educate the workforce to identify email threats, we need a similar campaign to re-frame what phishing looks like today Commenting on the findings, Ray Canzanese, head of the Netskope Threat Labs, said: "Social engineering will continue to be the top method attackers use to get an initial foothold in their target organizations in 2025, and phishing will be one of the most common techniques. "Despite years of efforts to educate people on how to spot a phishing link, the number of people clicking on phishing has tripled year over year. It is increasing because people are being bombarded with phishing links from all directions: email, social media, ads in search engine results, and all over the web. Furthermore, genAI is making it easier for attackers to craft convincing phishes. "All of this underscores the fact that educating users on detecting a phishing page is insufficient and that education must be coupled with technological solutions to the phishing problem." The finding comes in Netskope's 2025 Cloud and Threats report summarising the global cyber threats in 2024 - please find a copy here. Please also see below further findings which may be of interest. Personal app risk - Personal app use is rampant in the enterprise, with more than one out of every four users (26%) uploading, posting, or otherwise sending data to personal apps every month, with personal use of cloud storage, webmail, and genAI apps posing the most significant risks to organizations worldwide. Remote work blurs the lines of personal and business life, workers are also blurring the lines with personal and business data. There are also issues between using approved and preferred applications - particularly when it comes to GenAI apps which leads to the increase in shadow AI tools There has been a significant increase in the number of apps blocked by the top 25% of organizations, where the number of blocked apps more than doubled from 6.3 to 14.6 over the past year Adversarial risk - Adversary activity in 2024 mirrored the broader geopolitical landscape, with Russian groups TA577 and UAC-0050 and the Chinese group Salt Typh...

In this episode of On Mission, Sarah Harrigan Scalfaro, Chris Pierno, Jonathan Sitko, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. discuss the history of the Union of Catholic Apostolate, founded by St. Vincent Pallotti.St. Vincent Pallotti's foundation had a very remarkable history. Having all people united as apostles of Christ was the dream of St. Vincent Pallotti and from the beginning this group took on a new form of an “Association” and immediately in 1835 it received the approval of the competent ecclesiastical authority. It is a community, which unites priests, religious, lay people and takes the name “Catholic Apostolate”. This community started many new initiatives answering to the many needs of the Church (Foreign Missions, Local Missions, Retreat Work) and in the city of Rome (evening schools, a soup kitchen, orphanage – Pia Casa di Carità, etc.). But the new ideas soon met with suspicion, many people could not understand his ideas and Vincent Pallotti had to defend his vision and his foundation again and again. After his death the name of his foundation of priests and brothers was changed into “Pious Mission Society” and there remained only this community and one of sisters. But the members of these communities never forgot that the idea of Pallotti was more than their present realization. Now, in the new millennium, St. Vincent Pallotti's idea has become a living reality again. On October 28, 2003, the Union of the Catholic Apostolate received the official approval and blessing of the universal Church from the Pontifical Council of the Laity. This happened only after much study of St. Vincent's charism and reformulation of their individual guidelines by the various Pallottine groups that have continued to hold St. Vincent as their founder. Hence, the reason for the name -- Union of Catholic Apostolate. And the Union is simply -- men and women, lay, religious and priests -- working together for the glory of God and working to spread the name of Jesus while fostering His love among all peoples. In this episode, we delve into the intricacies of Google UAC strategies on iOS post Apple's introduction of App Tracking Transparency (ATT). We love this episode as this is from an ex Googler who gives us the inside track into the dynamics at play within Google that shaped a lot of the changes that happened post ATT. Ashley Black describes details about Google's initial response to ATT, and talks about modeled conversions. We also uncover the challenges and limitations Google faces with iOS ad inventory, particularly the inability to prompt for ATT in browsers and the significant enhancements brought about by SKAN4, including web-to-app tracking. Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of how Google maneuvers through changes like those that happened with ATT on iOS - and, more importantly, how you can adapt to a post-ATT world on iOS with UAC.KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Adam and Porter breakdown the news of Eric Musselman to UAC and discuss what is next for the Razorbacks.
More often than not, UAC forecaster Craig Gordon heads into the backcountry alone. He loves it. the solitude. Moving at his own pace. Spending as much time as he wants, as much time as it takes to understand the snowpack. He also understands the risks involved in touring alone. Craig joins us to talk through two of his most memorable solo backcountry tours, what he learned out there, and how he came back a changed man.
If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's snow. In his 20-plus years as a UAC forecaster for the Logan region, Toby Weed has seen snow's uniting effects. The Logan mountains boast an abundance of terrain, and for years, motorized and non-motorized users battled for the best slopes. But, Weed says, these days, things have changed. He joins us to talk about how, by focusing on the snow, and how to travel safely on it, we can all just get along.
Simone Plourde may be new to the professional scene, but how she races and handles everything running would make you think she has been in the sport for decades. Simone Plourde rose to recognition quickly in the NCAA while at the University of Utah. She finished 4th in the 3000m at NCAA Indoors, Pac-12 champion over 1500m, and earned All-American honors in the outdoor 5000m. It wasn't a perfect final year for the NCAA, but it was a perfect year for her to transition into the professional ranks, signing with Nike and UAC. Her summer consisted of a podium finish at the Canadian Championships and representing Team Canada in Budapest at the World Championships. Even after the long year, she lowered her 1500m PR to 4:06. Simone is well-spoken and articulate in how she talks about running, but not in the way you might think. She is a refreshing listen and we are sure her mindset and monologues will make you a fan of hers ahead of the Paris 2024. Topics of the Episode include: - Introduction to running and NCAA system/transfering Universities - Decision to leave NCAA early - Exceeding all expectations in 2023 - First World Championship experience - Nike/UAC - Fan Submitted - BanterBowl Disclaimer: Audio quality is lower than in previous episodes as Dave forgot his microphone cord and headphones but ordered a new set that will be ready for the next episode. Enjoy!
The La Sal Mountains of southeastern Utah erupt out of the surrounding red rock desert. They sport steep slopes and big alpine lines that just beg to be skied. But this is expert terrain, says UAC forecaster Eric Trenbeath. It's highly avalanche prone, especially in the heart of winter, when the coverage is thin. Trenbeath is based in Moab, and he's been forecasting for the La Sals and nearby Abajos for nearly 15 years. All that time, and for years before he arrived, the shadow of the Gold Basin accident has hung over winter recreation down there. Trenbeath joins us to recount the tragic events of February 12, 1992, and to explain how the shockwave of an avalanche fatality can reverberate through a community for years.
