In this episode, Russell Marcus joins us to discuss how this occurs in a two-week philosophy summer program. He is the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of Philosophy at Hamilton College. Russell specializes in the philosophy of mathematics and the pedagogy of philosophy. He is a Past-President of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers. Since 2018, Russell has been running a philosophy summer camp at Hamilton College designed to help faculty develop more effective teaching practices while also benefiting students. fWotD Episode 2950: Zeng Laishun Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles.The featured article for Monday, 2 June 2025, is Zeng Laishun.Zeng Laishun (c. 1826 – 2 June 1895) was a Chinese interpreter, businessman, and educator. He was among the first Chinese students to study at a foreign college. Born in Singapore to a Teochew father and a Malay mother, he was orphaned as a young child. He was educated by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, a Christian missionary organization, where he converted to Christianity. He was sent to the United States in 1843 and in 1846 was admitted to Hamilton College, but was unable to graduate due to a lack of funds. Zeng then traveled to China, and following several years of working as a missionary assistant in Guangzhou he left with his family to pursue a trading career in Shanghai.In 1866, Zeng was hired by the imperial government as an English instructor at the newly established Fuzhou Navy Yard School. Seeking to gain experience with Western practices and institutions, the imperial government began the Chinese Educational Mission in 1871, amassing a group of 120 Chinese boys to study in the United States. He worked as an interpreter and English tutor for the mission under bureaucrat Chen Lanbin and Zeng's colleague Yung Wing. He returned to the United States in 1872, where he was frequently and erroneously hailed as the "Chinese Commissioner of Education". Zeng settled with his family in Springfield, Massachusetts, and began giving public lectures on Chinese society alongside his participation in local civic life. He was briefly dispatched to Cuba around the end of 1873 to investigate the poor working conditions of Chinese indentured servants brought to the island as part of the coolie trade. He was abruptly recalled to China in late 1874, likely for diplomatic purposes; during his return, he traveled through Europe to assess universities for future educational missions. In that capacity she oversees a staff of over 150 professional social workers and support staff that provide a wide range of social work services in inpatient acute, outpatient and residential settings. Social workers at VANJHCS provide case management, discharge planning, program coordination, psychotherapy and educationservices. Prior to being appointed to her current position, Emily was the Program Manager for the Transition and Care Management (TCM) program at VANJHCS which serves Post 9/11 Veterans, providing case management and other support services. She began her career with the VHA in 2008 when she was hired as a CBOC Social worker at the Hudson Valley VA Health Care System. In that capacity she provided concrete services, case management and crisis intervention to Veterans in a Primary Care clinic. This allowed her to learn the VHA system inside and out rather quickly. Prior to joining VA, Ms. Feiner enjoyed a varied career in Social Work spanning over two decades. She worked with adolescents and young adults in schools and an outpatient clinic, homeless pregnant women in a maternity shelter, and was the Director of an Outpatient Substance Abuse Counseling Center. Ms. Feiner was also an adjunct professor of Social Work at Fordham Graduate School of Social Services where she taught courses in Advanced Practice, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Substance Abuse Treatment and Clinical Practice seminar. In addition, she also taught in the Human Services program at Westchester Community College. She has maintained a private psychotherapy practice since 1988. Emily has always had a strong commitment to her community and has served on the boards of several community agencies including HeadStart of Rockland and Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic. She was twice elected to her local Village Board of trustees. Ms. Feiner holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College and a Masters of Social Work from Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has completed the coursework for a PhD in Social Work at New York University. She is the proud mother of two young adults, and enjoys going to hear live music, skiing and hiking in her free time. In that capacity she provided concrete services, case management and crisis intervention to Veterans in a Primary Care clinic.   She worked with adolescents and young adults in schools and an outpatient clinic, homeless pregnant women in a maternity shelter, and was the Director of an Outpatient Substance Abuse Counseling Center. Ms. Feiner was also an adjunct professor of Social Work at Fordham Graduate School of Social Services where she taught courses in Advanced Practice, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Substance Abuse Treatment and Clinical Practice seminar. In addition, she also taught in the Human Services program at Westchester Community College. She has maintained a private psychotherapy practice since 1988.   Emily has always had a strong commitment to her community and has served on the boards of several community agencies including HeadStart of Rockland and Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic. She was twice elected to her local Village Board of trustees. Ms. Feiner holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College and a Masters of Social Work from Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has completed the coursework for a PhD in Social Work at New York University. She is the proud mother of two young adults, and enjoys going to hear live music, skiing and hiking in her free time. From January 2001 to June 2003, Dr. Haass was director of policy planning for the Department of State and a principal advisor to Secretary of State Colin Powell. From 1989 to 1993, he was special assistant to President George H.W. Bush and senior director for Near East and South Asian affairs on the staff of the National Security Council. Previously, he served in the Departments of State (1981–1985) and Defense (1979–1980), and was a legislative aide in the U.S. Senate. A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Haass holds a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College and master's and doctorate of philosophy degrees from Oxford University. He has also received numerous honorary degrees and was a member of the faculty of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and Hamilton College. Dr. Haass is the author or editor of fourteen books on American foreign policy, one book on management, and one on American democracy. He is as well the author of a weekly newsletter Home & Away published on Substack. Marcie B. Ries '72 is a retired Ambassador with more than thirty-five years of diplomatic experience in Europe, the Caribbean and the Middle East. She is a three-time Chief of Mission, serving as Head of the U.S. Mission in Kosovo (2003-2004), United States Ambassador to Albania (2004-2007) and as United States Ambassador to Bulgaria (2012-2015). She was a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs from 2020-2021, where she co-authored the report “A U.S. Diplomatic Service for the 21st Century.” She was also co-author of Blueprints for a More Modern Diplomatic Service, published by Arizona State University in 2022. Brad Cooper just completed his first season as the Men's Basketball Head Coach at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. He spent the previous season as an assistant at Hamilton College. Prior to joining the staff at Hamilton, Cooper was the head coach at Keystone College in La Plume, Pa., from 2013 to 2023 and an assistant coach at Keystone for the previous two seasons.Cooper has also been the 17U boys' coach for Scranton-based NEPA Elite AAU since 2022, and was an assistant coach at his alma mater -- SUNY Fredonia -- during the 2010-11 season. Bio Dana serves as Chief Compliance Officer for Stryker and is responsible for overseeing the global compliance, privacy, and enterprise risk programs and functions. Dana also currently serves as the global president for Stryker Women's Network, which seeks to improve Stryker's results by fostering an open and inclusive culture, with a focus on attracting, developing, and retaining talented women. Dana has more than 20 years of experience in the life sciences industry. She joined Stryker in 2017 as Chief Legal Counsel, leading a global legal team advising on regulatory and quality, manufacturing and supply, technology and cybersecurity, commercial and government contracting, and privacy. Prior to Stryker, she served as Assistant General Counsel at Novo Nordisk, where during her 14-year career she held several positions of escalating responsibility within the legal team, overseeing support to the commercial, clinical, medical affairs, R&D, compliance, and government affairs organizations. Dana has worked extensively on matters related to product development and commercialization, market access and reimbursement, and compliance and risk management. Previously, Dana worked in private practice at O'Melveny in New York City. Dana received her law degree from New York University School of Law and her bachelor's degree from Hamilton College.

There are all different types of friends. From the one best friend you've known since kindergarten to the coworker you have small talk with by the water cooler. These more casual, or “medium” friends, people you hang out with every now then, but don't divulge all your secrets to, can be just as beneficial as your closest companions. You can stretch your social muscles, get some serotonin from your interactions, but not have to put as much time and effort into emotional labor. But these relationships can also cause some anxiety, especially when the expectations about what these friendships are get muddied.  Today on AirTalk, we talk to Keelah Williams, professor of psychology at Hamilton College, about the more casual friends in our lives. Today's poem from Ezra Pound (a poet with his own colorful history of exile) is after the style of Li Po, featured last week.Ezra Pound was born in Hailey, Idaho, on October 30, 1885. He completed two years of college at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a degree from Hamilton College in 1905. After teaching at Wabash College for two years, he travelled abroad to Spain, Italy, and London, where, as the literary executor of the scholar Ernest Fenellosa, he became interested in Japanese and Chinese poetry. He married Dorothy Shakespear in 1914 and became London editor of the Little Review in 1917.In 1924, Pound moved to Italy. During this period of voluntary exile, Pound became involved in Fascist politics and did not return to the United States until 1945, when he was arrested on charges of treason for broadcasting Fascist propaganda by radio to the United States during World War II. In 1946, he was acquitted, but was declared mentally ill and committed to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C. During his confinement, the jury of the Bollingen Prize for Poetry (which included a number of the most eminent writers of the time), decided to overlook Pound's political career in the interest of recognizing his poetic achievements, and awarded him the prize for the Pisan Cantos (New Directions, 1948). After continuous appeals from writers won his release from the hospital in 1958, Pound returned to Italy and settled in Venice, where he died, a semi-recluse, on November 1, 1972.Ezra Pound is generally considered the poet most responsible for defining and promoting a Modernist aesthetic in poetry. In the early teens of the twentieth century, he opened a seminal exchange of work and ideas between British and American writers, and was famous for the generosity with which he advanced the work of such major contemporaries as W. B. Yeats, Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, H. D., James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, and especially T. S.
