We return to the subject of vampires on The Folklore Podcast, a subject which we last covered in detail way back in Season 2 with a two-part investigation into the folkloric vampire.This time, we focus on the vampire as it is found in the Slavic regions, with our guest Sam Grant. The East Side Freedom Library invites you to a discussion of the new book, Watershed: Attending to Body and Earth in Distress, featuring author Ranae Hanson and discussants Sarah Degner-Riveros, Chelsea DeArmond, and Sam Grant. Watershed explores the lands of northeastern Minnesota where Hanson's parents cleared land and built a house by a lake. As a young person in those woods, Hanson learned an abbreviated history of the land—one that largely left out Indigenous neighbors. “The fur trappers left cabins; the lumbermen, tree stumps; the Finns, grandmothers on swamp farms; the Englishmen, mine shafts; the miners, company towns. All of us came from somewhere else. None of us belonged.” As an exchange student in Europe, during the Vietnam War, Hanson explains: “I discovered, to my surprise, that some people found my life interesting. My new friends had never been in a canoe, did not know how to knead bread, had not built a fire or slept in a tent.” As a graduate student in Ohio, Hanson “began to see the woods where I had grown up as an outsider would. I had thought we were living a real-time regular life, that eating from the woods was what people did. […] We had been part of nature.” Hanson raised two children on her own, taught at three colleges while pursuing a doctorate, and began to notice how quickly the earth was shifting. “In the summer of 1989, the rains did not come. When I drove north, I noticed that the pines on the southern edge of the boreal forest were dying.” She noted that tent caterpillars ate the early birch and poplar leaves four years in a row. Drinking water from the lakes was no longer safe. In Watershed, Hanson asks: What if we tended to an ailing ecosystem just as we care for ourselves in the throes of a medical condition? She offers a work that is at once a memoir of illness and health, a contemplation of the surrounding natural world in distress, and a reflection on how these come together in opportunities for health. The Covid vaccine has given us a ‘roadmap’ out of the lockdown but it also provides us with a whole new set of moral conundrums. The virus will likely be with us forever, so the question becomes: how will we live with it in the medium and long-term? We’ve all accepted conditions on our daily lives, with the view that they would be temporary, but should we have to get used to them? Downing Street says the idea of a "Covid passport" app is still under review. Should we make the ability to travel, socialise in public or even go to school and work conditional on having been vaccinated? Those in favour, say it’s a pragmatic route to normal life in a world of vaccine hesitancy. Others base their argument on the principles of safety and fairness: there is a good reason to treat people with immunity differently if they are not a risk to others. The 200,000+ people who signed a recent online petition urging the government not to introduce vaccine passports are worried about their impact on civil liberties and social cohesion. Sam Grant from the human rights organisation Liberty said they would, "create a two-tier society where some people can access support and freedoms, while others are shut out - with the most marginalised among us hardest hit." For many, conditionality is an issue of trust, fairness and proportionality; it is part of the give and take of the responsibilities and rights of citizens. In welfare, for example, they believe people should demonstrate their commitment to finding work in order to receive benefit payments. For others, conditionality undermines social cohesion, because it comes with an implicit sense of blaming victims. Rather than further stigmatising people by attaching conditions to their daily lives, they believe we need to understand better why they are not pursuing a particular course of action. They are joined by MN350’s very own Sam Grant, who discusses MN350’s campaign to support the bill, as well as MN350’s mission to address climate justice in the food system, transportation and divestment from fossil fuels. The Headwaters Bill is a visionary piece of legislation that will create and maintain a decentralized food web economy across the state: a source-to-table model that's actually designed to meet the demands of food, water and climate. This wide-ranging conversation explains the many ways in which the publicly-funded industrial food system fails our communities - extractive of the earth, and destroying the health of ecosystems and communities - especially communities of color. Marita and Sam offer examples of North Minneapolis community members and organizations whose work has shifted food policy, and given people access to land and healthy food. Dec. 8, 2016 Storytelling is powerful. Most youth workers know that, but so often miss the opportunities to gather and tell meaningful stories about youth programs. Sam Grant shares her thoughts on the four ways we mess up storytelling: (1) we make the story about our organization, (2) we want the story to be perfect, (3) we have the story but nothing to back it up, and (4) we try to appeal to emotions and end up victimizing our customers.   Podcast Transcript

Sam Grant is a transformative organizer, educator and facilitator working through multiple formations to advance the convivial dreaming process of individuals and networks actively manifesting health in self, relationships and local to planetary socio-ecologies. Dan and Sam discuss creativity in activism, transdisciplinarity and the fallacies of academic disciplines, the problem with "expertise," heeding the call of intuition and the "dreaming" process, and the messiness, joy, and agony of creative inquiry. Sam’s PhD work at the California Institute for Integral Studies focuses on integrating his life-long passions in environmental, economic and cultural justice through the lens of Africana Critical Theory to theoretically imagine how we co-transform the domination –control paradigm toward an intercultural ecological democracy. Sam is doing grassroots prototypes of what this could look like in the United States and Sierra Leone. Sam has been on community faculty at Metropolitan State University since 1990, where he created and leads their Minor in Community Organizing and Development. He is the Faculty Director of the Environmental Sustainability program at the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs, working with students from 26 colleges and universities to engage in climate justice through local to global socio-ecological systems. He is a lead consultant with three firms: a) a firm assemblage he founded with his wife – the Movement Center for Deep Democracy and Embody Deep Democracy – through which he is currently a capacity building consultant on a local food systems initiative funded by the Greater Twin Cities United Way; b) he has a long-standing consulting partnership with The Public Policy Project, which is now working on a major environmental justice initiative; and c) he is a consultant with Creative Catalysts, working on the African American Futures Initiative with the Saint Paul Foundation. In addition, Sam is on the participatory design team for the revamp of a long-standing arts-based community development initiative – the Creative Community Leadership Institute. He current lives in the Twin Cities metro area of Minnesota with his wife Zea and their daughter Sol – two of the most amazing creative catalysts in his own life.
