I sit down with veteran screenwriter and lifelong competitive martial artist Brian Herskowitz on how he applies his concepts from competitive martial arts to lasting success as a storyteller, keys to competing for over 50 years, maintaining your body, applying the same mindset to everything, upgrades in regenerative medicine (prolotherapy, PRP, stem cells), giving yourself as a writer and martial artist room to play, how "do what I say and not as I do" can make sense when there's free play, how the belt system was a late addition to martial arts, and allowing the student to define their own success. You can't be a dictator to other people's wants and goals, and you can't allow others to dictate your wants and goals as well. What you want to get out of anything, you get to decide. My intent in speaking with trainer, fitness writer, and gym owner Chris Bathke was to make an evergreen episode about every possible fitness scenario and question that are relevant to most people. And when you break it down, for most people, it's not an infinite number of questions nor scenarios. So what you will find are practical answers that will be useful for every phase of your life. So you've been rejected. That sucks. Sorry. But what kind of rejection? There's the obvious one we all know, romantic rejection. But there are also professional rejections, like not getting a job or getting into a school or program. Then there's being rejected as a friend, or generally, as a human being. I recently moved Must Triumph to a new podcasting host. Now, none of this should matter to you. What's supposed to happen is, all the platforms you listen from should seamlessly switch over from the old host to the new host. But sometimes that doesn't happen. So to make sure your feed has been updated, I've uploaded this episode and if after a few days you see a new episode after this one, then you're good. You don't have to do anything. But if this is the last episode you see on your feed forever, then your feed somehow didn't update. It takes a lot of creativity to be angry and miserable. But you can't use up misery, you'll always have more. Misery isn't something that builds up, like a pressure cooker, it's more like an addiction or habit. And just as using more drugs doesn't get drug addiction out of your system, constantly venting misery doesn't make misery go away. Writer and poet Maya Angelou said, "You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” And that's the same for misery, the more you use, the more you have. Often it is the warrior like Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi (c. 1584 – 1645) who is more applicable to the everyday person than a philosopher or monk. It is not that we need a more adversarial viewpoint or that Musashi gives us better insight than German philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein or Taoist poet Chuang Tzu. Do not brag over what is not yet done. Be playful, be childlike. Kids think then they do. We need to add some of that back into our lives. Fear of risk stagnates progress. It might feel safe to do nothing, yet most of the world's ills happen because "we should have done something." Happiness is an internal state, but it's driven by external actions. The more meaning we provide others, the happier we feel. So for the sake of others and yourself, have your accomplishments surpass the things you wish you had done. This is one of the many pieces I wrote several years ago while I was taking care of my mom during hospice. Much of my philosophy was crystallized during this period. I wrote this in thinking through my despair. And there is a difference, between depression and despair. Depression is clinical, but despair is philosophical. And I think we often mistake the two—and for many of us, what we suffer from is despair. It may even take our life. And for me, philosophy saved me from despair. And hopefully—with this piece—I can help others who are also going through despair.
