In the early 17th century, Japan was witness to a samurai who was arguably its greatest warrior ever. He wasn't just one of the greatest swordsmen in history; he was a philosopher, a writer, an artist, and, in contravention to the samurai code at the time, he was a vagabond. Today, he is considered a saint of Japanese martial arts, and he has been portrayed in Japanese movies and books. Send us a textIn 2015, Fairfax criminal lawyer Jonathan Katz finished court early enough to rush over to the Mindful Leadership conference in Arlington, eager to meet such great teachers as Roshi Joan Halifax, Jim Dethmer and Rhonda Magee. Sold out, said a front desk person. A woman overheard my asking what I could do about that, and she sold me her extra ticket. This conference was so good that it would have been worth flying coast-to-coast for such an experience. Learning applications of mindfulness to my life and work are very important. Among the best teachers for that at this conference was author of Awake at Work (and more) Michael Carroll -- currently with Global Coaching Alliance, and a student of such advanced teachers as Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche -- who immediately captured me with leading a grounding sit followed soon after with the story of a tollbooth angel who would greet people even at the most trafficked, sweaty and stressful times of day, hand them an M&M candy, and wish them a nice day. Michael bridges any gap between mindfulness and Buddhist teachings and applying them to the real world, including the rough and tumble of the workplace, and, in this episode, the courthouse. I should have known long ago already about highly accomplished samurai and Five Rings author Miyamoto Musashi, but did not, other than hearing about Five Rings. In this podcast interview with Jon Katz, Michael masterfully relates the lessons of Musashi's masterful defeat of Sasaki Kojiro to its applications to our own lives. Michael is a life tourguide who helps reveal plenty, including lessons and truisms that are right in front of our eyes, but that we have yet to see more clearly. Check out -- and read -- his books and more here. This podcast with Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com. Paul Martin is a Japanese sword expert who has worked at the British Museum and traveled extensively in Japan to study swords and armor. Martin's new book Japanese Swords and Armor covers 30 famous samurai warriors and their swords, armor, and other artifacts associated with them, from antique sets to modern treasures, each with its own historical and cultural significance. The book was originally published in both Italian and French, and will now be available in English from by Tuttle Publishing in Oct. 2024.He discusses the history and significance of Emperor Go-Toba, who was exiled to the Oki Islands but continued making swords there. The swords he made were marked with a chrysanthemum, which became the basis for the current Imperial seal.In this podcast episode, Paul Martin highlights some of the most notable pieces in his book, including a wooden sword made by Miyamoto Musashi and sword fittings attributed to him. Martin provided recommendations on the best places in Japan to see historical Japanese swords.Empeor Go-Toba was known for his poetry, much of it written while in exile on Oki Island. One particular poem involves the poet banishing the frogs from a nearby pond:"Frogs, croaking in the pond,Go away, banish your noise; In this world of sorrow,There is no need for your song." (translation generated from ChatGPT)This poem highlights Go-Toba's despair and the heavy burden of his exile. The imagery of banishing the frogs from the pond serves as a metaphor for his own banishment and desire for peace amidst his suffering.Paul also talks about the beginning lines of the Tale of the Heike, an epic that recounts the history of the late Heian period, including the life and exile of Go-Toba“The sound of the Gion Shoja temple bells echoes the impermanence of all things; the color of the sala flowers reveals the truth that to flourish is to fall. The proud do not endure, like a passing dream on a night in spring; the mighty fall at last, to be no more than dust before the wind.” Helen Craig McCulloughLastly, Paul's favorite books are:1. They Came to Japan by Michael Cooper, a collection of Jesuit records from the 17th century.2. The Tale of the Heike, (version translated by Helen Craig McCullough) a classic Japanese epic poem that reflects the concept of impermanence.“The sound of the Gion Shoja temple bells echoes the impermanence of all things; the color of the sala flowers reveals the truth that to flourish is to fall. The proud do not endure, like a passing dream on a night in spring; the mighty fall at last, to be no more than dust before the wind.” Helen Craig McCullough3. The documentary "The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On" by Kazuo Hara, which explores the ambiguities of Japanese culture and the horrors of war.Be sure to pick up his book: Japanese Swords and Armor: Masterpieces from Thirty of Japan's Most Famous Samurai Warriors (Tuttle, Oct. 2024)You can follow Paul Martin by clicking on the following links:Website: The Japanese Sword (thejapanesesword.com)YouTube: Paul Martin: The Japanese SwordFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/The.Japanese.SwordInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejapanesesword/Twitter: @thejapaneseswrd (https://x.com/thejapaneseswrd)LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thejapanesesword/ The Books on Asia Podcast is sponsored by Stone Bridge Press. Discipline is a very important trait to have and develop once you commit to The Way you been true destined to go. Discipline does not matter when it comes to time and how long something takes, discipline is a forever present quality that few have mastered. Great book to read in this regard is "The Book Of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi who was a legendary Japanese samurai. "If you know the way broadly, you will see it in everything." A reading and commentary of Dr. Edwin Vieira's By Tyranny Out of Necessity: The Bastardy of Martial Law, Chapter 3, Part 3. We delve into the intricate interplay of mindset, martial art, and the science of political-economy to address the problem of monopoly cartels that are undermining good governance and the livelihood of ordinary citizens. Through the lens of samurai philosophy, particularly insights from Miyamoto Musashi's "Book of Five Rings," we'll explore how every challenge presents an opportunity for victory. From the erosion of individual liberties, debasement of the currency, and social degeneracy to international conflict, together we'll uncover the silver lining that is always available in every dark cloud in the form of actionable solutions rooted in personal freedom, popular self-government, and local militia, that has the power to dismantle the perverse incentives of the political caste (politicians, bureaucrats, technocrats, and oligarchs). In this episode, we delve into the teachings of Miyamoto Musashi to uncover the roots of stress, anxiety, and lack of productivity. Musashi advises perceiving beyond what is immediately visible, urging us to identify underlying fears and insecurities that fuel our overthinking. He emphasizes that there is more than one path to success and warns against fixating on a single solution. Adaptability is crucial in resolving conflicts between inner desires and outer expectations. Musashi encourages focusing on personal aspirations rather than societal constructs, highlighting the importance of prioritizing tasks that genuinely serve us, avoiding distractions from relationships, media, and social drama. Musashi's philosophy underscores the importance of living in the present and maximizing each day. He advocates for conquering today's challenges as a victory over oneself, paving the way for future successes. Overthinking, he suggests, stems from impatience and an obsession with immediate results, which can detract from the journey. By balancing mind and body and taking each day one step at a time, we can overcome the distractions that hinder our progress and focus on becoming better versions of ourselves. This episode is a guide to channeling our energy towards meaningful growth and achieving our goals through patience and perseverance.

In the early 17th century, Japan was witness to a samurai who was arguably its greatest warrior. He wasn't just one of the greatest swordsmen in history; he was a philosopher, a writer, an artist, and, in contravention to the samurai code at the time, he was a vagabond. Today, he is considered a saint of Japanese martial arts, and he has been portrayed in Japanese movies and books. In this honorable episode of Sorry, We Tried, we're talking about the man many call the greatest swordsman of all time, Miyamoto Musashi. He went on an undefeated streak of 60 duels and zero losses, and most of the stories of his fights are absolutely bonkers. Where did he come from? Who was he? And how did he use the oar of a boat to defeat one of the best swordsmen in all of Japan? Tune in for all these answers and more! Also in this episode, Harrison kills Spencer's musical dreams. Robby shares a bowling-related scheme. Spencer reminisces about an incredibly strange bully. And the guys can't get enough of bizarre talent show performances. The Way of combat strategy can be likened to the craft of carpentry. Comparing samurai with carpenters is related to the subject of “houses.” We speak of noble houses, warrior houses and the “Four Houses.” We also talk of the collapse or continuation of a house. In the arts we refer to a school or tradition as a house. It is because the label “house” is employed as such that I draw parallels with the carpenter's Way. The word “carpenter” (dai-ku) is written with the two ideograms meaning “great” and “craft.” The Way of combat strategy is also a “great craft,” which is why I relate it to the carpenter's endowments. Study the content of these scrolls carefully if you seek to become accomplished in the craft of war. Train assiduously, with the teacher serving as the needle and the student as the thread. Stelios and Josh discuss the wisdom of Miyamoto Musashi, the masterless samurai and undefeated dueler who wrote the Book of five rings.
“If you know the way broadly you will see it in everything.” — Miyamoto MusashiEver since I started History on Fire, one topic has been the most consistently requested by listeners. Over the years, I received hundreds of messages asking me to cover the life of Miyamoto Musashi. That time has come. Here we go. Musashi has been the subject of one of the greatest bestsellers ever written, a novel by Eiji Yoshikawa that sold over 120 million copies. And yet, the story of his life is mixed with so many myths and legends that it's rather difficult to separate fact from fiction. He lived across the late 1500s and early 1600s, during the waning phases of the Warring States period. By that point, after over 100 years of on and off civil war, Japan was a country suffering with PTSD. Soldiers and civilians alike had all been exposed to insane amounts of bloodshed and brutality during the Sengoku Jidai. Musashi was born in the midst of that, so it's little surprised that his is a tale filled with intensity and violence. In this second and final chapter of this series, I'll explore some of the key events in the latter parts of Musashi's life: from the siege of Osaka to the Shimabara Rebellion, from his adopting sons to his grief over the death of his daughter, from his exploration of Zen Buddhism to his writing of the Book of Five Rings, and much more!
