Our guest for this episode is Newton Cheng, a father, world class powerlifter, engineer, and Google's Director of Health and Performance. In his work he leads a team with the mission to support the physical, mental, social and spiritual health and wellbeing of Google's global workforce. We went into this conversation looking to compare corporate wellness with tactical human performance, but we came away from it with so much more. This wide ranging conversation covers everything from the importance of mastery practices to making meaningful social connection their primary measure of effectiveness. While Newton works in a space that is very different from the military, it is astonishing how many of the points he made are directly relevant to challenges we face. At times it felt like he had been in some of the same meetings we have. He argues that retention means ensuring talented people flourish in your system, that quantitative data may not be the most important thing when considering health and wellness outcomes, and that vulnerability is a superpower because of the way it enables meaningful social connection. He highlighted Microsoft's Work Trend Index, and especially its emphasis on increasing rates of employee burnout.

Warrior quotes on strategy, resilience, and vision from one of the greatest samurai warriors in history who wrote The Book of Five Rings. The Book of Five Rings is a text on kenjutsu and the martial arts in general, written by the Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi around 1645. Many translations have been made, and it enjoys an audience considerably broader than other martial artists and people across East Asia. Who was Miyamoto Musashi? Miyamoto Musashi, original name Miyamoto Masana, artistic name Niten, (born 1584, Mimasaka or Harima, Japan—died June 13, 1645, Higo), was a famous Japanese soldier-artist of the early Edo (Tokugawa) period (1603–1867). Musashi began his career as a fighter early in life when, at age 13, he killed a man in single combat. In 1600 he was on the losing side of the Battle of Sekigahara (which paved the way for establishing the Tokugawa shogunate), becoming one of the rōnin (masterless samurai). In time he set out on a personal quest to develop perfect sword technique. He invented the nitō ichi-ryū, the style of fencing with two swords, and is often referred to today as kensai (‘‘sword saint''). Musashi claimed to have fought in more than 60 individual sword fights, many of which were to the death and all of which he won. Musashi's most famous encounter took place in 1612, against his arch-rival Sasaki Kojirō, a swordsman whose skill was reported to be equal to his own. The contest took place on a small island off the coast of Japan. While being rowed out to the dueling site, Musashi fashioned a wooden sword out of an oar. When the two enemies finally met on the beach, Musashi quickly dispatched Kojirō with a well-placed blow to the head using his wooden sword. After that, feeling that he had reached his peak as a swordsman, Musashi retired from the dueling life, though he trained some students and helped to suppress the Shimabara Rebellion in 1637. Tsume, Kaizoku, and Boa were held as guests in Setsuo, the village elder's house. The townsfolk crowded into Setsuo's house to catch a glimpse of the ronin as they ate their evening meal. The party was introduced to the other community leaders. There was Natsumi, an outspoken and strong young woman, who seemed to act as Setsuo's second in command. Next was Shinichi, a wiry and lithe man, stablemaster and previous owner of the waystation which operated on the outskirts of town. After him was Daizo, the enlightened spiritual head of the village. Finally, there was Hiroto, the large and boisterous sake brewer-- his sake was the pride of the village.During their introductions to the village leaders, Naoki remembered where he knew Tsume from. And he remembered just how much he owed him. The shrewd man said nothing, but you could see the gears begin to work in his head.The village leaders began to explain the many problems which had befallen their village in recent months. Foremost was the new lord who took up residence in Closed Shell Castle, Reju Jikai. Aside from being a callous and cruel man, his rice tax had become astronomical, and the village was struggling to keep up with it. He went so far as to even forbid the villagers from brewing sake. To him, the sake was a waste of the rice which was rightfully his. To make matters worse, the new lord had started over hunting the forest, making food and resources even scarcer in the region. It had also become apparent that Jikai had begun hiring a small army of ronin to serve him in the castle, and now these thugs terrorize the local villages.Worst of all though-- the water kami seemed to be very upset with the village. Daizo had done all he could to subdue the river's unceasing anger, but to no avail. The river slows to a trickle so the crops may wither and die, and when it comes time to harvest what remains, the river bursts with energy, flooding the village and destroying what's salvageable. As a result of the villages being thrown into poverty and the forests becoming overhunted, bandits had started robbing people on the roads, and packs of wolves had started becoming more aggressive in their search for food. The bandits have become so bold, they've even kidnapped Setsuo's son, Ichiro. Never letting an opportunity go to waste, Kaizoku pledged to find and return Ichiro in exchange for the village's help in repairing his boat.The village asked another favor of the ronin. Just a few days ago, Jikai's thugs burned down the village way station, burning many alive, including Shinichi's late wife. Being too afraid to sully themselves with the flesh of those who died such grizzly deaths, they asked the ronin to help.Feeling he had heard enough, Kaizoku went for a walk by the river. Dying for a sip of his Liquid Void, the pirate began searching the banks of the river for his lost vial. Desperate, he waded into the river, searching every snag and stone for the precious substance. But the water kami had other plans for this intrepid fool. The storm surged and the river swelled. Kaizoku lost his footing and was swept away by a torrent of water.After some time, Tsume and Boa began to look for their new friend. Following his tracks in the fresh mud, they found where he walked into the river. Tracks went in, but none came out. Anxious, they followed the river downstream, onto the outskirts of town, the darkened forest looming ahead of them. Then they heard a deafening yell. The sound of a man teetering on the precipice and clinging onto dear life.Following the sound, Tsume and Boa found an imprint of where Kaizoku's body must have been, and tracks leading deeper into the forest, as if he had been dragged. Following the tracks, they began to see the orange flicker of fire, and the sound of raucous voices. Peering through the bushes, Tsume and Boa found an old, ruined monastery which had become an encampment for a large gang of bandits. A terrible storm rolled in from the bay, wreaking havoc upon the land. Wind and rain battered the landscape while distant thunder warned wayward travelers. Upon some forgotten road in some distant valley walked two figures, each baring vestiges of a former life. There was Naoki, once a reputable merchant of decent wealth living in the capital city, now a peddler of mundane wares traveling from shrine to shrine. And there was his bodyguard, Boa, a castaway from the Crane clan. Once a student in the arts of sword and brush, now a master in the arts of plow and ox. The two followed the muddy bank of a raging river when suddenly a small boat lost control in the rapids and crashed into an outcrop of jagged rocks. The boat's two passengers were flung from the boat and into the rocks below. Steering the ship was the deckhand-turned-pirate, Kaizoku. A man whose ambitions are only outnumbered by his enemies. His passenger was the rogue, Shiroi Tsume. Born a hinin butcher, Tsume turned to a life grave robbing and treasure hunting in order to support his family after the death of his father.Seeing the incident unfold before them, Naoki and Boa jumped into action, helping to pull Kaizoku and Tsume to shore, as well salvaging as much of their equipment as possible. Assessing the damage, Kaizoku realized that his ship was in need of considerable repair. A couple of items had gone missing too: his father's fishing net, and a vial of Liquid Void-- a substance to which he had become fiercely addicted.Once on shore, Tsume got a closer look at his rescuers. His heart sank when he made a startling revelation. The peddler, Naoki, was a man to whom he owed a great deal of money, and who has blackmail on Tsume, knowing all about his criminal lifestyle. Luckily for him though, it had been years since they last saw each other, and Naoki did not seem to recognize him.Naoki recommended they all travel downriver to the nearby town of Twin Blessings Village. He and Boa were traveling there already, and he suspected that Kaizoku and Tsume could find their lost equipment there as well.Upon walking into town, they the noticed the crops of the village had all seemed to either wither and die, or become flooded by the rain and river. Then they heard shouting and the hoof beats of horses. It sounded like the village was under attack.They found two drunk samurai clad in teal and purple, wearing the mon of a family they did not recognize. These two samurai were demanding a tribute of sake from the villagers. When the villagers insisted that they did not have any more sake to give, the samurai grew belligerent and began assaulting the peasants. When Kaizoku tried to intervene, he was intimidated and told to step down. Once the samurai got tired of berating the villagers, they rode off.Afterward, the party was greeted by the head of the village, an elderly man named Setsuo. He thanked the party for trying to stand up for them, but insisted that confronting the samurai would only anger them, and make them come back in force. Setuso welcomed the party as guests in his home and showed them what meager hospitality he could afford: a fire and a warm bowl of rice.Setsuo explained that those samurai were in the service of a new lord who had recently taken power in the region. His name was Reju Jikai. He was cruel and abusive, and has been hiring large numbers of ronin to bolster his ranks—a resource which there was no short supply of these days after two consecutive wars and a huge shift in power.Setsuo asked the party to stay as long as they need. The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi is a classic text on strategy and martial arts, but it also contains valuable lessons about motivation. Motivation is a crucial aspect of achieving our goals and fulfilling our dreams. It is what drives us to take action and make progress, even when faced with obstacles and challenges. The Moody Blues song "22,000 Days" is a reminder of the limited time we have to pursue our passions and achieve our goals. With approximately 22,000 days in the average human lifespan, each one is a precious opportunity to live a fulfilling life. When it comes to motivation, remembering the finite nature of our time on this earth can be a powerful tool. Knowing we have a limited amount of time can motivate us to take action and pursue our goals with greater urgency. The song encourages us to "find the joy in life" and to "live before we die." Motivation is not just about achieving specific goals, but also about finding meaning and enjoyment in the journey. The Book of Five Rings is a classic text on strategy and combat written by legendary samurai, Miyamoto Musashi nearly 400 years ago. Today I am joined by Mark Mireles to talk about how the wisdom contained in this book is still relevant for self protection today. Mark is a 2 time recipient of the LAPD Medal of Valor, a threat assessment and personal protection practitioner, and a high ranking martial artist in several styles. He killed a man in combat when he was 13 years old. He was one of the fiercest Japanese warriors of his day, and he also created and perfected an art form. He is also known by the names Miyamoto Masana or Niten. Born in 1584 in feudal Japan, Musashi began fighting as a warrior very young. At the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, his fellow soldiers lost - which made him a ronin. A ronin was a masterless samurai. They were like the Wild West Gunslingers of the American West– soldiers for hire, duelists, and mercenaries. They were competitive, sometimes hired to protect, but usually they fought for their own honor, rather than someone else's. He worked toward mastering his skills with the sword. His goal was to create the perfect sword technique, and what he created would become known as kensai. Kensai is a fencing style with two swords. Musashi fought and won more than 60 sword duels, many to the death. On one occasion, the youthful Musashi traveled to Kyoto to fight the master at the Yoshioka family school of martial arts. He arrived late, but the duel went on. It was not a battle to the death, but a wooden sword duel. One blow from Musashi and Yoshioka Seijuro was out of the fight with serious injury to his shoulder and arm. Seijuro resigned from teaching and became a monk. His status and honor as master had been skunked by a young man. The new head of the family challenged Musashi. Musashi arrived late again, but killed him with a blow to the head. Now, the Yoshioka family, dishonored by Musashi's prowess in battle, invited Musashi to another duel with the new head of the family, a 12 year old boy. They knew he had been late to the last two duels, so they plotted an ambush. This time, though, Musashi arrived early, and saw the family setting up the ambush. He attacked and killed the boy, and then victoriously fought his way through the mob of mercenaries that meant to kill him. In 1612, Musashi's most notorious duel was fought against Sasaki Kojiro. His rival was known to be as good if not better of a swordsman as himself. The battle was fought on a remote island off the coast. As they rowed out to the battleground, Musashi carved a wooden sword from his oar. And then, entering the fight, quickly killed Kojiro with a strike to the head with the wooden sword. Musashi knew it was time to “quit while he was ahead,” and retired from sword fighting. He did go on to train other swordsmen, and write a very well known war strategy known as The Book of Five Rings. That book would go on to inspire and inform many warriors, and later western business executives in the 1970s after it was translated to English. Miyamoto Musashi was a Japanese swordsman, philosopher, and writer who lived from 1584 to 1645. He was renowned for his skills in the art of sword-fighting and wrote the famous book “The Book of Five Rings”, which is still studied by martial artists today. Musashi was also known for his distinctive fighting style, which involved using two swords simultaneously. He was considered one of the greatest swordsmen in Japanese history. The Book of Five Rings is a treatise on swordsmanship and martial arts written by Miyamoto Musashi. IMHO the top five concepts introduced in the book include: No Mind The Void Three Modes of Attack The Way of the Sword The Five Rings No-Mind The concept of “no-mind”, or mushin, which is the state of being completely focused and free from distractions or emotions. No-mind or mushin is the idea that a martial artist should be able to remain focused and free from distractions or emotions during combat. Musashi believed that this state of mind was essential for success in battle, as it allowed the martial artist to respond quickly and decisively to any situation. He wrote that “the primary thing when you take a sword in your hands is your intention to cut the enemy, whatever the means. Whenever you parry, hit, spring, strike or touch the enemy's cutting sword, you must cut the enemy in the same movement. It is essential to attain this.” The Void The concept of “the void”, or mushin, which is the state of being empty and free from preconceived notions or expectations. The concept of “the void” or mushin is the idea that a martial artist should be empty and free from preconceived notions or expectations during combat. Musashi believed that this state of mind was essential for adaptability and flexibility in battle, as it allowed the martial artist to respond to any situation without being limited by preconceived notions or expectations. He wrote that “the void is not emptiness. It is rather a place of potential, a space that can be filled with any number of possibilities. When you are in the void, you are able to see all options clearly and choose the best course of action without being influenced by your own desires or expectations.” “The Void is not emptiness. It is rather a place of potential, a space that can be filled with any number of possibilities.” Three Modes of Attack Musashi discusses three different modes of attack in The Book of Five Rings: the “direct” mode, the “indirect” mode, and the “combined” mode. The direct mode “Ken no sen” involves attacking an opponent directly and with full force, using powerful strikes and techniques. The indirect mode “Tai no sen” involves using feints and other tactics to trick the opponent and create openings for attack. The combined mode “Tai tai no sen” involves using a combination of direct and indirect attacks in order to keep the opponent off balance and gain the upper hand. The Way of the Sword The concept of “the way of the sword” is the idea that the pursuit of martial arts should be a lifelong journey of learning and self-improvement. Musashi believed that this was the key to success in combat, as it allowed the martial artist to continually improve and adapt to changing circumstances. He wrote that “the way of the sword is not just about mastering a particular technique or style. It is about constantly seeking to improve and grow as a martial artist. It is about never being satisfied with your current level of skill, and always striving to become better. The way of the sword is a lifelong journey, and those who follow it will find that they are always learning and growing.” The Five Rings The concept of “the five rings”, which are the five elements of strategy that Musashi believed were essential to success in martial arts: the earth, water, fire, wind, and void. After defeating the Chimi our Hapless shinobi run into a mysterious caravan with black garbed guards and emaciated peasants hauling lumber from the Shinomen Forest.
