Looking to answer a simple question, has there ever been a good video game movie adaptation?
Assault on Arkham is the prequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum. So it hols a very niche' place in the "Arkhamvers". Which is a term I didn't even know existed. It refers to the media that is related to the Arkham video games. So far, this is the only movie in that universe, and while it's not as great as it could have been, it definitely isn't as bad as it could have been either. The voice cast definitely helps elevate this movie. The story is all over the place, and then animation is a little cheap, but overall it's fun.
Street Fighter II: The Movie, an animated adaptation of a sequel to a video game that didn't get a film adaptation. This movie is made for fans of the series, like if you don't know who these characters are, and what happened to them in the first game, too bad! Still, it's got some great fight scene's and animation. Check it out!
We're doing the Super Mario Brothers Movie, again! It was our first episode, but we just can't stop talking about this absolutely bonkers film. It's silly, it's fun, and Dennis Hopper plays King Koopa! How could you not want to talk about this movie. We are joined by local film critic and enthusiast Matt Giles!
On this episode we are talking about the video game influenced, and very trippy, David Cronenberg movie, eXistenZ. This isn't one of Cronenberg's most well known movies, but it is a lot of fun, especially as it comes at a time when there were several films that tackled the nature of reality. Fans of the Matrix, Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor will also find a lot to enjoy with this film. We are also joined by special guest Steve Weidner. Steve has played video games since the Fairchild Channel F system, but is primarily a tabletop RPG gamer. He has been a genre film nerd since his mom took him to a double feature of Barbarella and Fantastic Planet. He still has a working laserdisc player and too recently realized that he spends way more time shopping for weird movies than watching them. He supports his film addiction as an instructional designer at a small college in central New York.
Going back to the Pokemon well this week as we discuss Pokemon - The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back! Which is a very strange title. Anyway, Producer Erin is on this episode and they discuss their experience with, I think, every Pokemon video game ever made. This is a very strange movie, that tries to teach a lesson, that is ultimately abandoned because everyone's memory is wiped.
It's Pixel Theater Time everyone. On this episode we're talking about Warcraft. An ambitious Fantasy Epic, based on one of the most popular video game franchises of all time! It... ok, like not great, could have been better, but isn't as bad as it could have been. We also talk a little bit about Zero Dawn Horizon, which would probably make a really great movie.
We've got a brand new episode for you, and this time we;e talking about the latest Mortal Kombat movie. This movie starts with a lot of promise, but ultimately doesn't delivery. Ron, especially, took it pretty hard.
We're taking on The Rock, with this episode as we discuss "Rampage" a movie that, for some reason, exists! I don't know how they got some many people together for such a dumb, middling movie. However, it's still one of the best movies we've ever watched on this podcast. So, if you like mindless action, or gorillas that know sign language, you could do A LOT worse.
Paul WS Anderson and Mila Jovovich are back, and this time they are tackling the world of Monster Hunter. We watch their latest film this week, and also introduce out new, rebooted format. It's the beginning of Season 1 for us, everyone. Everything that came before is practice, this podcast just got real. We also discuss Raft, The Pretender and The Avengers game.
Alright, we have quite the strange little film for you today. A film sequel to the immensely popular video game Final Fanbtasy 7. 3 out 4 of our hosts have found memories of this movie, 1.. less so. 5 points to whoever guess who doesn't! (It's Nick!)
Ok, so this isn't technically a video game adaptation. But, it's close enough for us! We're watching Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, which was supposed to be the launch of a digital actress, who would appear in multiple films. That didn't happen though because this movie lost a lot of money. It's a very strange film, but one that brought about a ton of innovation. It's kind of like the Phantom Menace for Motion capture. Which isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.
Aaron Paul and Dominc Cooper star in a movie about car racing, I think. Maybe it's about stealing cars too? It's sort of about friendship... also revenge, we think? It's a bit of a mess honestly. Anyway, here is Need for Speed!
New episode, hot off the presses! We're talking Assassins Creed today. A movie, and some would say franchise, that isn't exactly sure what it wants to be. Check it out!
2020, what the heck? Am I right? Let's talk about it.
Our latest episode is on Tekken. A movie that, if nothing else, sets the record for the most times the word Tekken is said on screen. Other then that, there isn't much to say about it.
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, another example of the difficulty in turning a fighting game into a movie. Especially, if you hold back on the crazy story elements, and try to make it exist in the real world. Fighting games are bonkers, and the movies made from them should be bonkers as well. Go. Full. Weird, Hollywood, you'll have more fun.
Another week, another Hitman movie. This is the second Hitman movie, not the one no one liked staring Timothy Olyphant, the other one know liked staring Rupert Friend. We talk about all the goofy nonsense happening in this odd take on the Hitman franchise. Hope you like!
The first of two Hitman movies. This one staring a miscast Timothy Olyphant and, I'm sure, other people. Come for the stilted dialogue and nonsensical plot, stay for the... not really sure why you should stay.
Doom Annihilation is a movie. You now officially know more about it then we did before we watched it. This movie barely made a blip when it came out, and with good reason as it just isn't that good. It does, however, employ the tried and true low budget movie trope of having a bunch of people wander around a water treatment plant and pretend it is a space ship.
We're continuing our Halloween episodes with Silent Hill: Revelations. A sequel that manages to, somehow, be even more confusing then the first movie.
We're continuing our Halloween theme with Silent a Hill, a movie filled with supernatural horrors that still somehow manages to be really boring.
Just in time for Halloween, it's Doom! The movie based on the iconic video game. This is a loose adaptation, that really doesn't know what it wants to be or even who it's main character is. Still, it's mostly fun.
It's all about Payne in this episode. Max Payne! A movie that really wanted to be interesting and just failed spectacularly. Hear the painful dialogue, watch the confused actors, marvel at the miscasting. It's really Maximum Pain, for the audience.
In this we're episode we're talking about Prince of Persia, a deeply flawed movie adapted from one of the greatest games ever made.
We did it! We watched all six Resident Evil movies. We're finally free!!! This ends our second Resident Evil Trilogy, we hope the episodes haven't been as uneven as the series of movies they were about.
We're coming to the end of our second Resident Evil Trilogy! Just one more movie and we can be done. At least until the inevitable reboot!
The fourth movie in the resident evil franchise. Not that great.
We really thought it couldn't get worse then House of the Dead. But this makes House of the Dead look like Alone in the Dark.
It's part two of our first three part Uwe Boll Trilogy. If that's confusing, it's only because this movie broke my brain
We're entering into UWE Boll territory, a place movie reviewers fear to tread. Take our hands, gentle listener, and we will guide you through, "House of The Dead"
Nick and Ron talk about the #1 movie in the world, Sonic the Hedgehog. A movie that could have been a disaster, but turned out to be pretty fun! And, even though it briefly scared Ron's daughter, we really enjoyed it. Check out this episode, tweet us with your thoughts and comments!
We're continuing our series on Resident Evil with the third episode in the franchise. Resident Evil: Apocalypse. It's better then the others in some ways, with a kind of mad meets meets some zombies kind of vibe. Ron seemed to like it more then Nick, though it didn't really stick with either of them. Check it out, and come back next time when we're talking about House of the Dead from Uwe Boll.
This episode we're discussing Resident Evil 2, Directed by Alexander Witt, Staring Mila Jovovich and Written by Paul W.S. Anderson. It's a shorter episode this week as Ron had to work, but also we couldn't remember much about this movie. Hope you like it, and let us know what you think!
On this episode we are discussing the netflix series, The Witcher. Which is a fun fantasy series, with an epic story lurking on the fringes. We also discuss, as we often do, Star Wars in general, and the Mandalorian specifically.
It's the start of our Resident Evil Series with, unsurprisingly, the first Resident Evil Movie staring Mila Jovovich and Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. Anderson is an interesting case as he appears to one of the few directors to thrive making video game adaptations, unlike other directors who seem to have been crushed by the experience. Paul W.S. Anderson is the first director to make a repeat appearance, as he previously directed Moral Kombat. This is also another entry into Mila Jovovich's ouvre of badass ladies who fight well and kinda have magic powers. Se also: Fifth Element and Ultra Violet
Nick and Ron discuss the rebooted Tombraider franchise, and games that were impossible to plat, in this episode of Pixel Theater. This closes out our Tombraider trilogy, but hopefully we'll be back to talk about the sequel, assuming that ever gets made.
Continuing our Tomb Raider series with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - Cradle of Life
On this episode we're talking about Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. A movie that has all the elements of a good movie, but that no one making seemed to really care about. Hav fun listening and tell us what you thought!
On this episode we are talking Wing Commander. Based on one of the best selling games of its era, that in many ways set the standard for modern games. The movie... did not do that.
We go back to Mortal Kombat for our 6th episode, with the sequel to the surprisingly watchable Mortal Kombat. This one is... less so.
Here it is! Our episode about Mortal Kombat, a movie that, at least in our opinion, hols up pretty well. Hope you enjoy the episode and we'll see you next time when we talk about *sigh* Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
So, Detective Pickachu came out in Blu Ray a few weeks ago, and because we are so timely we are releasing a podcast about it now. Ron and Nick had very little interactions with Pokemon up until this point, so enjoy getting frustrated with their ignorance.
Hey Everyone, This episode we're talking about Street Fighter. A movie both Nick and Ron liked as Kids, but found a bit lacking as adults. That may be putting it mildly. Ron may not recover from watching it.
On this episode we'll be talking about Double Dragon, probably one of the few movies in existence that can make Super Mario Brothers look like a work of cinematic genius.
We kick things off on Pixel Theatre with the (probably) first video game adaptation ever, Super Mario Brothers. Find out what Nick and Ron thought on Pixel Theater!
