Send us a textIn Your Nature returns with a heartening new episode exploring the Return to Nature Clare Church Biodiversity Project, a community-driven initiative transforming churchyards into havens for wildlife and reflection. Ricky is joined by Barry O'Loughlin, Biodiversity Officer with Clare County Council, to discuss the origins of the project, its progress to date, and the vital role of community involvement in its success. Together, they reflect on how with the bishops blessing, these sacred spaces are being reimagined as biodiversity hotspots, blending heritage with habitat.Later in the episode we meet Jennie Drysdale and Anne McLaughlan, two local champions of the project. On location in Doonbeg, they share their experiences of embracing the initiative, the positive changes already visible in their community, and their hopes for the future. Their story is a testament to the power of grassroots action and the beauty that emerges when people and nature reconnect. The Hedgehog is the featured species of the week, chosen by special request from Jennie. These charming nocturnal mammals are increasingly reliant on connected green spaces like churchyards for foraging and shelter. Their presence is a hopeful sign of a healthier, more hospitable landscape for all wildlife. In Your Nature features Ricky Whelan, Biodiversity Officer with Offaly County Council, and Niall Hatch of BirdWatch Ireland, and is edited by Ann-Marie Kelly. The series is supported by Laois, Offaly, and Westmeath County Councils, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, and the Heritage Council. For more about BirdWatch Ireland, visit www.birdwatchireland.ie.

HedgeHog Financial Wellness has been announced as overall winner of this year's coveted AWS EdTech Accelerator, run by The Learnovate Centre in Trinity College Dublin, with the support of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Ten EdTech startups were selected to join the eight-week programme, and received support and mentoring on building a digital solution to address a learning need or problem. All participants presented their solutions to Learnovate, AWS, and industry judges at the final 'Pitch Day' showcase which took place on June 17th at the AWS Offices in Dublin. HedgeHog Financial Wellness was announced as overall winner and will receive $100,000 USD of AWS cloud credits. Judges said HedgeHog stood out for its innovative, evidence-based approach to a critical global issue: the spread of financial disinformation among young people. Through its interactive, guilt-free financial wellness workshops, HedgeHog empowers students with the real-world financial skills they need to thrive. HedgeHog is building a strong foundation for financial literacy that is inclusive, practical, and scalable. The judges praised the startup for its clear global relevance, thoughtful pedagogy, and potential to create lasting societal impact by equipping the next generation with the confidence and tools to make informed decisions in an increasingly chaotic financial world. The other nine companies who were successful in making it onto the accelerator programme were: Future Learning, Rocket Learning Rewards, Mantra Strategy, Anytime Creativity, IntegrityIQ, Cobblestone Learning, iAir Academy, ScenarioWorx and WorkJuggle. This is the second year of the successful AWS EdTech Accelerator run by The Learnovate Centre, a leading global future of work and learning research hub, and AWS. Last year's winner was ALPACA, which developed a game-based tool that identified potential reading issues in children earlier. Entry was open to early-stage startups that are developing digital solutions to problems related to education and who want to accelerate growth and scale operations. The companies also received seven full-day workshops led by experts in learning, business and technology. Learnovate Director Nessa McEniff said: "We are delighted to announce HedgeHog Financial Wellness as the winner of this year's AWS EdTech Accelerator. The programme attracted exceptional startups with innovative ideas in the learning space, reflecting the vibrant EdTech community in Ireland. With this Accelerator, Learnovate continues to provide expertise and support to the growing and vibrant community of EdTech startups in Ireland." Learnovate Commercialisation Manager Tom Pollock said: "It's been exciting to see such a strong cohort of Irish EdTech companies engaging with cutting-edge research and innovation. We're proud to support the commercialisation of impactful learning technologies through initiatives like the AWS EdTech Accelerator. This programme exemplifies how academic expertise, industry partnership, and entrepreneurial ambition can come together to develop solutions that address real educational challenges." Stephen Bonney, EdTech Account Manager, at AWS said: "The AWS EdTech Accelerator is an intensive programme designed to accelerate Ireland's most promising education technology startups. By combining AWS's cloud expertise with specialised EdTech mentoring, we're helping Irish founders build scalable solutions that transform learning." Judge Andreea Wade, General Partner at Delta Partners, said: "It was a pleasure to join the judging panel for the Learnovate and AWS EdTech Accelerator. Congrats to all the teams - the ambition and clarity of thinking were inspiring. What set HedgeHog Financial Wellness apart was its goal of tackling a globally relevant issue with precision and purpose. "The startup's solution is grounded in strong evidence, targets a clearly-defined global market, and, most importantly, confronts the rising threat of financial disinformation. In an age whe...

The year was 1985, Freddy Mercury was bringing down the house at Wembley, Rocky Balboa won the Cold War by defeating Ivan Drago, and the Nintendo Entertainment System was release in the United States. It took the country by storm on the overall clad back of an Italian plumber named Mario. Nintendo ruled the home video game market until 1989 when a new player joined the game. The Sega Genesis' step onto the scene wasn't a home run right away. Sega decided to bring in a legend of the toy industry, a man named Tom Kalinske. This guy had his hands all over your childhood (not in the bad way) . Flintstone Vitamins? He created them. Barbie? He's the reason she's around today. Matchbox Cars? Who amongst us hasn't smashed one with a hammer when they no longer rolled properly. Tom and his team decided the only way to fight Nintendo's death grip on the market was to appeal to an older more mature and rebellious audience, teenagers. Sega became MTV to Nintendo's Disney Channel. Their battle took place in the stores, at the conventions, and on your TV. It had everything, corporate sabotage, defection to the competition, Joey Lawrence, Japanese rent-by-the-hour hotels, and a Hedgehog with attitude who's still doing his thing today. “I genuinely think nurses and pharmacists need to know why these medicines are called hedgehog inhibitors so that we can, in fact, effectively educate our patients. Just because to date, this class has the weirdest name I've encountered, and I almost expect at this point that my patients are going to ask me about it. I think that we need to be informed that, just on, where do these names come from, why is it called this, and does it matter to my patient?” Andrew Ruplin, PharmD, clinical oncology pharmacist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, WA, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BS, AOCNS®, manager of oncology nursing practice at ONS, during a conversation about hedgehog pathway inhibitors.  Music Credit: “Fireflies and Stardust” by Kevin MacLeod  Licensed under Creative Commons by Attribution 3.0   Earn 0.5 contact hours of nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) by listening to the full recording and completing an evaluation at courses.ons.org by March 14, 2027. The planners and faculty for this episode have no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies to disclose. I mean—and I know that's not controversial—but you actually find callouts in some of the kind of the national consensus guidelines. These treatments might not be tolerable for a decent number of patients. Some of these side effects can certainly reduce quality of life. Again, nothing that controversial here when we say it out loud, but just the frequency with which it occurs can make it quite difficult for some patients.” TS 9:13  “Certainly, based on what we said before, I think one of the easiest things to do for patients starting this class is to just make sure that they have really classical supportive medicines like antidiarrheals and antiemetics before they start treatment. Diarrhea, nausea occurred in about 20%–40% of patients across trials. So certainly patients should be aware of that risk. Again, not a controversial side effect, but it's just simple things we can do to make sure that our patients are quick to start treatment is to make sure that they have these medicines and they're educated on how to use them.” TS 11:21  “I think patients need to be aware that side effects, as I had mentioned before, can be especially frequent with this class. So for a patient, they need to be aware that communicating your needs to your oncology team is really crucial to their own ability to use these treatments with minimal interruptions.” TS 14:45  “I think that regardless of whoever is following up with our patients, though, as our arsenal of oral anticancer therapies does continue to expand, both nurses and pharmacists need to have specialized knowledge of these agents to be successful in their patient care roles.” TS 18:28  “When there are clear recommendations for reproductive health, as I summarized before with these agents, I obviously think we need to be aware of them and not just defer to these generic recommendations. Because if you just defer to, ‘Well, use barrier contraception and then for a week after your last dose,' you know, ‘Okay, it's not true with these agents.'” TS 24:37
