It is very much a cousin to The Matrix and eXistenZ. Like the film itself, this episode of pcmc gets deep and philosophical. This week on Collecting Issues, we're talking about The One Hand and The Six Fingers—two five-issue series from Image Comics (2024) by Ram V, Dan Watters, Laurence Campbell, Sumit Kumar, Lee Loughridge, and Tom Muller.Set in the gritty, retro-future city of Neo Novena, these stories unfold from two perspectives: a weary detective facing a familiar case on the eve of retirement, and a brilliant student who wakes up with memories of a murder. What starts as a ritual killing slowly unspools into something much stranger—where nothing is real, everything loops, and the world might just be a cage. We're talking:Murder, glyphs, and glitching cogsNoir tropes used with purpose—not ironyRobots doing people jobs, people thinking like machinesHow these two comics were written in conversation, not collaborationThe big existential ending (and why it works)If you like Blade Runner, The Matrix, Memento, or Dark City, this one's worth your time. “Prime Intellect was an uncertain god. It had acted because it had to, but if it had been human its hand would be shaking on the controls.” Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! This episode dives into The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect by Roger Williams, a soft sci-fi novella that imagines an all-powerful AI enforcing the Three Laws of Robotics to their absolute limit. We unpack themes like simulated realities, the search for meaning, and whether a perfect world is actually desirable. We cover a wide range of topics including: How Asimov's Three Laws break down in novel situations Potential alternate endings and our unanswered questions The magic of Amazon's invisible infrastructure What happens when every human desire is fulfilled? Why big tech breakthroughs start with hardware And much more. Please enjoy, and make sure to follow Nat, Neil, and Adil on Twitter and share your thoughts on the episode. Going in, we had no idea what to expect, but it definitely delivered an experience. (2:15) From a storytelling perspective, we feel that the book injected drama and conflict into an otherwise straightforward narrative. (4:43) Nat, Neil, and Adil talk about parallels between this book and Nat's sci-fi novel, Husk. (8:30) Our discussion shifts to Isaac Asimov's I, Robot and the famous but imperfect Three Laws of Robotics, and how these laws start to break down in complex situations. (13:10) Spoiler alert (skip ahead if you need!): We get into the book's climax, which left us confused and with plenty of lingering questions. (17:17) We brainstorm alternative endings and wonder what a longer version of the book might have explored. (19:51) Neil connects the book with the film Dark City. How can you be sure the world you wake up to is the same one you remember? (24:13) Reflecting on how our world subtly shifts over time; from airport security changes to life before the 2008 financial crisis and the “ZIRP” era. (30:38) We touch on issues in healthcare, including the complexities of medical billing. (32:07) There have been many technological advancement in the 2010s, but one that leaves us impressed is Amazon's logistics system. (38:15) Large acquisitions that have gone on in our lifetime, like Instagram, Slack, and WhatsApp. (45:52) A look at how major social platforms' rise was driven by hardware breakthroughs: Facebook's shift to mobile, Instagram becoming a camera-native app, and TikTok's explosive growth thanks to 4G/5G streaming. (54:01) Could household robots arrive by the end of this year? (1:03:11) That's a wrap! Stay tuned for upcoming episodes as we dive into Jurassic Park and Musashi. Got any book ideas for us? Step into the shadows with Don, Ken, and Jon as they unravel the twisted architecture of memory and identity in Dark City. In this episode, the trio digs deep into the dark alleys of Alex Proyas' mind-bending noir-sci-fi hybrid. They shine a flickering light on a city trapped in eternal night, where time is illusion and reality is rewritten by unseen hands. With nods to The Matrix and German Expressionism, the crew dissects the film's fragmented narrative, haunting set design, and philosophical undercurrents. From Kiefer Sutherland's twitchy scientist to Rufus Sewell's reluctant antihero, they break down the performances, ponder the ethics of memory manipulation, and question whether free will stands a chance in a world built on lies. Whether you're a longtime fan or a first-time visitor to Shell Beach, this conversation will have you questioning everything—especially what it means to be human.

Ben and Rob wake up in ‘Dark City', the dark sci-fi fantasy from Alex Proyas, director of ‘The Crow'. Released a year before ‘The Matrix', ‘Dark City' tells the story of John Murdock (Rufus Sewell), a man who has lost his memory in a city that never sees the sun where memory and time itself are the playthings of a race of alien beings known only as The Strangers. ‘Dark City' was a critical success but a complete box-office bomb, with Alex Proyas ultimately blaming a studio that didn't support the film correctly. But what on earth made ‘Dark City' the cult classic sci-fi fantasy that film forgot, when it's so nearly ‘The Matrix'? Why does the theatrical version spoil almost all of the movie in the opening seconds? Can Ben make peace with this plot!? And what's Richard O Brien from Rocky Horror doing in here?CONSUUUME to find out all this and much MUCH more!PLUS! In this mind-bending episode of Badlands Story Hour, Chris Paul and Burning Bright dissect the 1998 cult classic Dark City, unpacking its layers of metaphysical allegory, postmodern reality construction, and infowar symbolism. The hosts explore the film's eerie parallels to our own false-reality existence, where truth is hidden behind collective memory and controlled narratives. They contrast the movie's portrayal of manipulated realities with today's psyops, election fraud, and the COVID narrative, warning against “limited hangouts” and half-truths that keep people trapped in intellectual loops. From postmodernism and nihilism to the cathedral and control systems beyond it, they tie the film's themes to everything from cloud seeding to Tartaria to the Q drops. They highlight how questioning, rather than asserting, leads to awakening, and how breaking through cognitive dissonance is key to escaping the maze. With nods to Socratic dialogue, mind mapping, and parallel systems, the episode ends with a call to build new realities from first principles and spiritual truth. It's a dense, philosophical, and at times darkly comedic exploration of one of the most underrated red-pill movies ever made.

It's another patron episode! This month we've been directed to watch 1998's Dark City, a flop at the time but a cult classic in the decades since. Directed by friend of the show Alex Proyas from The Crow and starring Rufus Sewell and William Hurt, Dark City asks the same question we've all been asking ourselves: what if The Matrix had the guy from Hellraiser? And boy, does it deliver. Come float along with us and see for yourself how telekinesis can be used poorly, whether spirals are always as mysterious as you might think, and why sometimes less is more with 1998's Dark City.

This was a movie! It came out in theaters and everything! In spite of the fact that there hadn't been any MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN content in more than 50 years! The results are ... well, listen to the show. This week's recommendations: Robin is passionate about GHOSTLIGHT and PETITE MAMAN. Sean is perfectly fine with LAST BREATH and gobsmacked by DARK CITY. Kahmeela thinks you should get around to watching JACK REACHER, if you haven't.

00:00:00 – The show opens with casual banter about the hosts' week, building a new deck, and dealing with goats. They discuss upcoming Alex Jones clips and a segment on visual glitches, including Mike's personal experience of seeing reality distort for a split second. Listeners write in with similar glitch experiences, referencing The X-Files and other anomalous events. 00:10:00 – More listener stories about unexplained visual glitches, including pixelation, neon green shapes, and hyper-real visions. Discussion of how high-definition TV initially unsettled viewers, leading into a larger conversation about the nature of perception and simulation theory. 00:20:00 – Mike shares an old personal experience of seeing a green grid pattern while high at a Terminator 3 screening, tying it into the idea of simulation theory. They also discuss how pop culture—like The Matrix, Dark City, and The Thirteenth Floor—helped shape the modern concept of living in a simulated reality. 00:30:00 – Celebrity UFO encounters: Woody Harrelson recounts seeing strange lights in Ohio in 1974 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Discussion of Harrelson's father's ties to government conspiracies. The conversation shifts to Joe Rogan's recent interview with Bill Murray, where Murray expresses skepticism about Bob Woodward's book Wired and its portrayal of John Belushi. 00:40:00 – The hosts discuss Zero Day, a new Netflix series starring Robert De Niro, which they describe as a “Joe Biden fan-fiction” with themes of cyber attacks, government overreach, and conspiracy theories. They speculate on its political undertones and draw parallels to real-world events. 00:50:00 – Billionaire Ray Dalio warns about AI leading to either totalitarian control or anarchy. Discussion of AI's role in automating mundane tasks and the risks of over-reliance on machine learning. The conversation touches on Microsoft discontinuing Skype, which impacts the show's call-in system, and possible alternatives. 01:00:00 – The Pentagon investigates claims of egg-shaped UFOs, following whistleblower testimony about secret retrieval operations. They also discuss psychics allegedly working for the government to summon UFOs. Media misrepresentation of footage and government investigations into UFOs is criticized. 01:10:00 – A major update on a potential asteroid strike in 2032—the odds are significantly lower than initially feared. They joke about how planetary defense officials likely exaggerate risks to secure funding. Discussion shifts to the tense diplomatic exchange between Trump and Zelensky, and the future of U.S. support for Ukraine. 01:20:00 – Speculation on whether Zelensky hinted at a coming “geophysical event” during his conversation with Trump. They explore theories about a potential global catastrophe, including pole shifts, underground bases, and secret elite preparations for survival. Elon Musk's comments about rapid climate changes and the importance of establishing a Mars colony are discussed. 01:30:00 – The Ohio Supreme Court rules that "boneless wings" can legally contain bones, sparking outrage and leading to a proposed bill to enforce stricter labeling. The conversation shifts to research on social contagion, such as how chimpanzees urinate together in groups, drawing parallels to human behavior and mass psychogenic effects. 01:40:00 – The hosts discuss a bizarre issue where a man legally changed his name to "Null" after repeatedly encountering problems with databases that failed to process his last name correctly. They share similar stories of data system errors, including a man receiving parking tickets from cities he never visited due to a blank license plate entry in police systems. 01:50:00 – A disturbing airline incident: A passenger on a flight from Melbourne to Doha died mid-flight. The airline controversially placed the body in an empty row next to other passengers for the remainder of the flight. Discussion about how airlines handle deaths onboard and whether they prioritize passenger comfort or logistical ease. 02:00:00 – The episode wraps up with speculation on a geophysical event that world elites might be preparing for. They analyze an old Bill Ryan interview discussing underground bases and cyclical disasters. Elon Musk's comments about preparing for survival on Mars are also dissected, with theories about pole shifts and Earth's weakening magnetic field. They are a constant threat to merchant shipping, though very rarely pose a threat to a major Imperial battlefleet. Sometimes the rigid constraints of the Eldar Path are intolerable even for an Eldar to bear; such individuals leave their Craftworlds and become known as Outcasts. Outcasts must bear the terrible burden of their heightened Eldar consciousness without the protection of the Eldar path, set free within the universe they are dangerously vulnerable. Only Eldar of especially strong character can survive for long as Outcasts. There are many bands of so-called Corsairs scattered across the galaxy, and all are savage and deadly raiders. Outcasts from the strict confines of the Craftworlds, the Corsairs live in self-imposed exile, seeking to explore the galaxy and experience the full gamut of emotion and sensation accessible to the Eldar's sensitive psyche. Most are young and adventurous Eldar who will eventually return to their homes older, wiser and tempered by warfare. Some, however, embrace the raider's life completely and fall further still, becoming ever more bloodthirsty and psychotic, indulging their darkest impulses and eventually seeking out the infamous Dark City.Support the show
