Reused props from the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie! Castor Troy's box of fun! Child endangerment! Awkward use of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow!" Efficient establishment of a bitter rivalry! Lengthy explanations of illogical pseudo science! Copious melodrama! Possibly the least subtle use of mirrors you've ever seen! Random sci-fi elements! Highly quotable lines! Bold parenting strategies! Hand waterfalls! Multiple amazing action set-pieces including an opening sequence that lesser movies would save for the finale! Environmental destruction, explosions, stunts, and sparks for days! This time on General Witchfinders, we're heading into deep space — and hell itself — with the notorious 1997 science fiction horror film Event Horizon.··Directed by Paul Anderson and written by Philip Eisner, Event Horizon is set in 2047. A rescue crew investigates the ship Event Horizon, which vanished years earlier and is now orbiting Neptune.··After Mortal Kombat (1995), Anderson was suddenly in demand, linked to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and even X-Men. Instead, he wanted a darker R-rated project. Paramount gave him Eisner's script, first about alien creatures, but Anderson reworked it into a haunted house in space, drawing on The Haunting and The Shining.··Filming was rushed when Titanic slipped its release. The first 130-minute cut was heavily trimmed after poor test screenings. One infamous scene, a Bosch-inspired vision of Hell using amputees and adult performers, survived only as brief flashes but fuelled the film's cult status.··The gravity drive began as a floating black hole but was redesigned as rotating spiked rings, echoing Clive Barker's Hellraiser and biblical Ophanim. Built to really move, it rattled so much that dialogue was re-recorded later. Eisner admitted Warhammer 40,000's “Warp” also influenced the idea.··At the time Anderson was credited as “Paul Anderson.” He later added the W. S. to avoid confusion with Paul Thomas Anderson. His later films include Resident Evil entries and Alien vs. Predator.··Filming took place at Pinewood Studios with visual effects by Cinesite and the Computer Film Company. The interior design was inspired by Notre Dame, creating a cruciform gothic cathedral feel. An early space station shot of Dr. Weir took 10 weeks, a third of the FX budget, and was redone more than 20 times. Composer Michael Kamen worked with Orbital for a hybrid score.··Laurence Fishburne plays Captain Miller of the Lewis and Clark. He later voiced the Silver Surfer, played Jack Crawford in Hannibal, and appeared in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3.··Sam Neill plays Dr. William Weir. Famous for Jurassic Park, he once auditioned for James Bond, losing to Timothy Dalton, and appeared in Possession and Omen III: The Final Conflict.··Jason Isaacs appears as D.J., the medic. Early credits include The Tall Guy. He went on to play Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and Harry H. Corbett in The Curse of Steptoe. He recalled Event Horizon as “genuinely disturbing,” especially the “hell set.”··Sean Pertwee plays pilot Smith. Son of Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor, he appeared in Cadfael, horror favourite Dog Soldiers, and later Gotham as Alfred Pennyworth, reimagined as ex-special forces.··Event Horizon remains a cult 1990s sci-fi horror, combining gothic design, disturbing imagery, and a cast of future stars. Its lost footage and production stories keep fans returning to one of the most infamous horror films of the decade.·Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Hosted on Acast. The only election that matters is the Condo President of Del Boca Vista! Also in the news, the Switch's eventual successor will be backwards compatible, in what form, we don't actually know, and the Netflix animated series Arcane based on League of Legends cost more than most movies to make??? Plus 3 new LEGO movies are in development at Universal, and we got a full trailer for the new Star Wars show Skeleton Crew. The Goonies vibes are high! That plus a hell of a lot more.

This week on the Everything Actioncast, whoever wins, we lose because we're talking about 2004's AVP: Alien vs. Predator, which came out 20 years ago this week. There's also a new Alien movie, Alien: Romulus, in theaters right now.Directed by schlockmeister Paul WS Anderson, AVP: Alien vs Predator pits the two intergalactic entities against each other in an Antarctic pyramid discovered by Weyland Industries. The company's head, Charles Weyland (Lance Henriksen) wants to claim the structure in his name as one last grand action before he dies from a terminal disease and he assembles a team that includes scientists, drillers and Alexa Woods (Sanaa Lathan), an expert guide in arctic environments. The group explores the pyramid but soon finds themselves caught between the Xenomorphs and the Predators, with the pyramid being a training ground for young Predator warriors to prove themselves or die in a rite of passage. Zach and Chris discuss how there was over a decade of hype for this battle from the comics and games, the lack of any interesting kills thanks to the PG-13 rating, how the Antarctic environment doesn't affect anything, how quickly most of the Predators die, and more. You can watch AVP: Alien vs Predator on Hulu. Next week, we're talking about John Woo's action classic The Killer as the new version, also directed by Woo, hits Peacock. We want to hear your comments and feedback. Send them all to contact@everythingaction.com. We're back and checking out another video game film adaptation! This time it's the Monster Hunter film that took the world by storm during Covid (not really), BUT is it as bad as people say it is? Tune in to find out!
It's June, so that means it's time for the AIPT Movies podcast's “Junesis” series! Where we cover movies based on/revolving around video games! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt are joined by comic book artist/writer Tony Sedani (Return to Rander, Skin Deep), to discuss Paul W.S. Anderson's first journey into the world of video game adaptations, 1995's Mortal Kombat!Endearingly dated VFX! A lovably awkward-looking four-armed monster man with back problems! A delicious turkey dinner being heartlessly discarded! Surprisingly faithful character designs! An unexplained cybernetic eye! More high kicks than you can count! A committed cast that includes Robin Shou, Bridgette Wilson, Linden Ashby, Trevor Goddard, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and a wonderfully-miscast Christopher Lambert! An iconic EDM soundtrack that not only influenced future Mortal Kombat games, but possibly also The Matrix and 1998's Blade! An enjoyably sincere and campy movie with vibrant colors and impressive sets that looks shockingly expensive by modern standards, which despite its watered down gore, may also be one of the most faithful and successful video game adaptations of all time!In addition, everyone shares their spoiler-free thoughts on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, while Tony talks about In A Violent Nature, and Alex discusses the remarkably bizarre 1999 rom-com, Never Been Kissed! You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The AIPT Movies podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from three filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Instagram and Twitter @ActionHarris. Matt is a terrific artist that you can find on Instagram @no_wheres_ville. Tim can't be found on social media because he doesn't exist. Tony Sedani can be found on Instagram @tsedani. If you have any questions or suggestions for the AIPT Movies crew, they can be reached at aiptmoviespod@gmail.com, or you can find them on Twitter @AIPTmoviesPod.Theme song is “We Got it Goin On” by Cobra Man.

Were you looking to see a film adaptation of the previously unreleased, unannounced, and undeveloped Assassin's Creed: Viva Le France?! Then you've come to the right place, because this week, we've got a high-flying clock punk classic for you on our hands! On this episode of The CineMEH Podcast, Josh and Ryan cover the 2011 interpretation of The Three Musketeers helmed by acclaimed video game director Paul WS Anderson. Yes, that's right, video game nerds, that was an Aklaim joke. Also, despite the heavily video game influenced introduction, rest assured this movie has absolutely nothing to do with video games. It has ven less to do with Alexandre Dumas's classic work. In a spiraling, death-defying "tribute" to the original text, we'll take you to the soaring heights and abysmal lows of this unbelievably strange take on swordplay, gunslinging, romance and adventure. Every wonder what Leelo from 'The Fifth Element' got up to after her date with destiny? This movie attempts to answer that question. Not really. But that's Ryan's theory, anyway. Come along for the ride as we swing from chandelier to chandelier and try and make sense of this hamfisted attempt to invent a new action-adventure franchise in the wake of Pirates of the Caribbean leaving the screens. Yes. Wake. Like a ship's wake. Ships. Pirates. Get it? I promise you, this is the best the humor gets considering how much of a tragic misfire this movie is. Yes. Misfire. As in musket. I'll stop now. The Three Musketeers was released in 2011 and stars Orlando Bloom, Mila Jovovich, Mads Mikkelsen, Christof Waltz, and a bunch of other people who probably thought this would launch their careers and instead, they went down in flames. Down in flames. Because airships crashing. Just listen to the episode. The CineMEH Podcast is a Slyjack Media, LLC production Like what you hear? We're greeted by The Video Dropbox's Josh Gorski & Joe Larsen, Filmmaker Dylan Reynolds and Podcaster Josh Hansen to discuss the popcorn Action/SciFi/Horror Paul W.S. Anderson (no, not the Wes or Paul Thomas guys!) and his brand of divisive big-budget B-movie themed material. Outside of Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon and the Blade Runner spin-off, are there any fans of his other productions (Pompeii, The Dark, The Sight, Monster Hunter, DOA, Pandorum, Death Race remake)? Is Alien Vs. Predator best enjoyed as a Godzilla/Universal Monsters slugfest or is it still too bland? Are the Resident Evil films best enjoyed as Mad Max and 28 Days Later type mayhem or are they still too debatable like the many Transformers and Fast & Furious type blockbusters? Is he another reliable mid-budget entertainer or still flawed in his visions? The roundtable chimes in and settles a Final Verdict so be there or be square! 228 - It's week three of our 'A Brief History of Zombies' miniseries. This week is notable admission to the Zombie cannon, although pretty polarising in appeal. But it's based on a game, a great game! WHAT A GAME! Anyway, Umbrella Corp, Mila Jovovich and a bunch of white dudes that look alike, oh and that one laser that dices that dude up... it's Resident Evil!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I gotta tell ya, this is the most a movie has ever been hyped for me where it's also matched the expectations set. It's spooky, it's bloody, it's shockingingly great for a Paul W. S. Anderson movie, and every performance was on point. Other than poking at the director, I have no bit for this episode, this movie kind of kicks that much ass. My good buddy Alex and I really enjoyed talking about it, and we also have a lot to say regarding the Audio Description and accessibility for both streaming and theatrical releses. Dig it!
With a cinematic franchise spanning 7 movies and a television show, it's hard to believe the movie that started it all off in 2002 is Rotten at 35% on the Tomatometer. The Paul W.S. Anderson-written and directed action-horror flick may have not scored well with the critics, but audiences all over the world seemed to love this big-screen adaptation of the beloved Sony Playstation video game.Comedian and writer Lisa Wallen joins Mark and Jacqueline in discussing whether or not 'Resident Evil' deserves its low rating all on today's show!If you'd like to give your thoughts on this movie or have another movie you feel like Rotten Tomatoes got wrong, email us at RTisWrong@RottenTomatoes.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The class had so much fun talking about things that weren't STEEL DAWN that they needed their own episode. Such wide ranging topics as: the false scarcity of the Disney Vault, Lawrence of Arabia puns, and imagining the beauty of Paul W.S. Anderson's Murder on the Orient Express. It's been a long time since we chatted to Phil aka Phil the Bear about his famous director retrospectives. We put that right this episode as we talk about his article on Paul Thomas Anderson (not to be confused with British director Paul W S Anderson, although we are sure Phil has written something about him as well). Like an early ensemble Paul Thomas Anderson movie, we have brought the band back together for this one. There is Neil (the one with the dark hidden past), Graham (the one with the current guilty secret), Phil (the man in charge who has demons of his own), Dec (the sage like one) and Jeff (too many secrets and a not so hidden anger). Phil is our guide through the career of the great man, and who keeps order when there is dissent, and trust me, there is plenty of dissent, although not always from the quarter you would expect. Now, the sharp eared amongst you will realise that this show has not been recorded recently. In fact, it is part of our huge batch of lockdown recordings we have yet to edit and release for your entertainment. This show was recorded in the first half of 2021. So, when you listen to it and hear the complete nonsense, we say about the film that was eventually released as Licorice Pizza, just remember that was all anyone outside of the production knew at the time. If you want to know what we thought of the film after its release, check out episode 196 for our review of Licorice Pizza. Similarly, if you want our more detailed thoughts on 'There Will Be Blood', please check out the review teams comments of that movie in episode 96. As for this episode, we address such tantalising questions as: Why didn't Burt Reynolds like Boogie Nights? What was it about watching the trailer for Magnolia on repeat that made it an unmissable film for Phil? Which member of the team really hated The Master? How many of Paul Thomas Anderson's films has Neil actually taken the time to watch? Which of Paul Thomas Anderson's films has a possible connection to the legendary Midnight Run? The answers to all of these are given in the show, along with the usual team banter you have come to expect from us. So, sit back, relax, and think back to those lockdown days when we recorded this.
4X4 2: PAUL WS ANDERSON PT. 1: MORTAL KOMBAT & EVENT HORIZONIt's the OTHER Paul Anderson in the spotlight for our third 4X4 this season. This is the guy that's married to, and works with, Milla Jovovich, not the guy who has kids in some kind of common law deal with Maya Rudolph and made a few of the best movies of the last two decades. We start with two early bangers from WS. Mortal Kombat (1995) literally makes no sense but - BUT - is ridiculously entertaining nonetheless. It is only Anderson's second film but the first to embrace the crazy genre enthusiasm that would define him. If you haven't seen it in a while, here is a spoiler: it is still unintelligibly plotted and acted but Goro still rules hard as a true marvel of practical effects. On the heels of Kombat's box office success, Anderson's next film, the Lovecraftian space horror film EVENT HORIZON (1997) was a box office disaster. That its reputation has only grown since as a cult favorite makes it a fascinating turning point in young WS's career as a kind of "what could have been" on his artistic trajectory. What do we think, though? (it's pretty good). Anderson was able to make his unappealing version of David Webb People's legendary Solider script before Event Horizon was released and the box office failure of both films put him in director jail for four years until he went back to the well adapting video games with Resident Evil. More on that in part two. BONUS: This is also part one of two of Jack's swan song before leaving America. Good times. DOUBLE BONUS: Ken and Jack watched Event Horizon on VHS. This is not an official VHS episode, however, because no one seems to like those (shhh).
