POPULARITY
For the latest installment of "Fighting VideoLAMES," we're looking at Capcom's second attempt to bring their beloved Street Fighter II to the big screen. Far from the silly, colorful spectacle of the JCVD/Raul Julia version, this time around Capcom opted for a more grounded, dramatic take, focusing primarily one single Street Fighter character in hopes of kicking off an MCU-like string of sequels ultimately culminating in a big team-up movie. But even with Kristen Kreuk, a hot TV star of the time, in the titular role as one of the video game's most popular characters, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li once again failed to cement Street Fighter as a cinematic brand. So what went wrong this time? How much can you change from the source material before you're no longer really making a true adaptation? And just what is going on with that Chris Klein performance? We discuss all this, and more! Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd

The Film Review Nobody Wanted/The Real Reason Lana Left It's a new year, so we had to shake things up a bit. Join us in our first viewing of the unforgettable, 3% certified fresh, Street Fighter movie from '09. The most legendary of useless characters all-around and we get to prove how this story is canon to Lana's character arc. HIGHLY RECOMMEND* to watch the movie before listening to us give it the best review it'll ever receive. #It'sALanavilleSummerInBangkokAfterAll (P.S. - please excuse the audio issues during the intro) (P.S.S. - remember to leave those FIVE STARS!)
Back in 2009, I was graduating high school and watching this film in the theater. I hated it. So much that I never watched it again...Until now! I had Anita check out the original movie first, so she gives her quick thoughts on that one. Chris tries hard to help us through this terrible plot and Anita caused a whole tangent that probably got used as the clip for this episode. Oh, and this film may have one of the funniest "seduction" scenes, i've ever seen. Can anyone tell us what was unrated in this unrated version too because it ain't feel very unrated! Acomi and Turk182 put on their martial arts gis and prepared for an an outdoor brawl. This isn't a dead or alive virtual fighting mortal combat in rage filled streets, with fist of fury flying about and pummeling someone till they just can't tekken any more. No. We're talking a good ol' fashion bareknuckle, no shoes, international Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li (2009). Ignoring everything about Street Fighter and the video game story, SF:TLOCL creates a new lore centered around Chun Li, while keeping some character and location names. Laughably boring, with fight scenes that are less entertaining than watching someone actually play Street Fighter II. Another case of good actors in bad movies. Not as good as the 1994 Street Fighter II Animated Movie, or the 1994 Street Fighter live action movie. Join Acomi and Turk as they dodge and feint poor writing, bad fight scenes, and bad dialogue. The day they released ST:TLOCL was the most important day in your movie career, but to us, it was just another bad movie. Acomi and Turk182, along the occasional special guest, provide running commentary of awfulsome movie and TV shows. The hosts select movies that either one, or both, have never seen. All jokes and comments are improvised. NO PREPARED JOKES OR COMMENTS! During recording, the movies are watched at a low volume and with the subtitles on. This week the Bloody Good Film Podcast goes where few podcasts have gone before... We wasted our free time so you don't have to, and watched quite possibly the two worst video game movies of all time. We continue through these franchises and break down two sequels and discuss both Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Is Chris Klein the worst actor of all time? Is it possible to be Irish, raised in another country, never be around Irish people ever in your life, and still have an Irish accent? Is there a guy from the Black Eyed Peas playing Vega? We answer all these questions and try to figure out exactly what went wrong with this "Street Fighter" film. I doubt there is any movie podcast that could enjoy Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. If there is, you should really take a second to think whether or not you can trust their opinions. No Lambert, no Tagawa, no Bridgette Wilson? This movie never had a chance. We discuss everything from Raiden's new haircut to the awful CGI animality attempts. Most importantly we give you the answer to our weekly question...Are Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation bloody good films? We encourage everyone to watch along while you listen and make sure to comment and let us know what you think. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for the June installment of their TV podcast. This time the brothers are talking about the Smallville series finale, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Coincidently, the series premiere will celebrate its 20th anniversary later this year. Smallville is a retelling of Superman's origin, focusing on Clark Kent's high school years and early adulthood, largely set in the hero's hometown of Smallville, Kansas. The series premiered October 16, 2001 on The WB. During the show's 217-episode run, The WB merged with UPN to create The CW, where Smallville continued until its tenth season. The two-part series finale aired on May 13, 2011. In the series Clark (Tom Welling, Lucifer) faces many challenges, such as fighting supervillains and balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his desire for a normal life. One of his adversaries is Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum, Justice League Unlimited), with whom he forges a friendship before a falling out. Clark's allies include his adoptive parents, Jonathan (John Schneider, The Dukes of Hazzard) and Martha (Annette O'Toole, Superman III), his high school friend Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack, Wilfred), and Oliver Queen AKA Green Arrow (Justin Hartley, This Is Us). Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) and Lois Lane (Erica Durance, Saving Hope) serve as Clark's love interests, as they do in the comics. Aaron and Josh go into when they first saw Smallville and their feelings on the show as a whole before breaking down each element of the series finale. The brothers also discuss the series' legacy and its crossover with The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths. Welcome to the place where I get to let my geek flag fly and talk about all things geek. Basically a fuzzy guide to life, the universe, and everything but mostly geek stuff. This is where I look into the world of geekdom and some geek news, comics, The Simpsons, Star Wars, and whatever randomness finds its way onto the recording. This level of the podcast is completely inspired by the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie and my ruminations about the quality (or lack there of) of video game adaptations. Thankfully Mr. Deuce, Blue, and Cory agreed to join me to SPOILER chat all about a bunch of movies which include: Super Mario Bros. (1993) / Double Dragon (1994) / Street Fighter (1994) / Mortal Kombat (1995) / Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) / Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) / Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) / Resident Evil (2002) / House of the Dead (2003) / Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005) / Doom (2005) / Silent Hill (2006) / Hitman (2007) / Max Payne (2008) / Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li (2009) / Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) / Ace Attorney (2012) / The Angry Birds Movie (2016) / Warcraft (2016) / Assassins Creed (2016) / Castlevania (2017-S4) / Rampage (2018) / Detective Pikachu (2019) / Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) / Monster Hunter (2020) / Mortal Kombat (2021) We also chat future video game movies content: Werewolves Within (June 2021) / Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (Nov 2021) / Uncharted (Feb 2022) / Sonic 2 (Apr 2022) / TBA: The Last of Us, Borderlands, Mario film, Pikachu sequel, Five Nights at Freddys, Crossfire, Ghost of Tsushima, Just Cause, Mega Man, Minecraft, Metal Gear Solid, Space Invaders, Tomb Raider 2, and Saints Row NOTE: This is a SPOILER heavy episode especially at the 1:39:30 mark where we do Mortal Kombat (2021) SPOILERS Congrats on completing Level 242 of the podcast! The finest moment of Chris Klein's career. With Heather Rogue
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, another example of the difficulty in turning a fighting game into a movie. Especially, if you hold back on the crazy story elements, and try to make it exist in the real world. Fighting games are bonkers, and the movies made from them should be bonkers as well. Go. Full. Weird, Hollywood, you'll have more fun.
The only thing worse than a bad movie is a boring movie, and this is a boring as hell movie. There is no true cohesiveness to this movie, the characters who are on the same team don't talk until the last fifteen minutes of the movie, but it turns out that they have always been in connection, but the scenes showing that connection was deleted. The male lead is a horrible actor, Moon Bloodgood is just a pretty face, Kristen Kreuk is awful, and Robin Shou is probably the best thing in this movie which is the equivalency of finding shit in a quarter. This movie is atrocious, and I am rueing the day I ever created this podcast. Enjoy. Raul Julia, Imma let you finish, but Chris Klein gave the best Street Fighter performance of all time! Meanwhile, where are the streets? Where is the fighting? WE WERE ON A BREAK!!!!
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li somehow manages to be the worst big screen adaptation of the franchise. The 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme wasn't a huge hit and was most certainly not critically beloved. Thus, Chun-Li had a low bar to clear, but it still could not do it. It made less money—$12.8 million vs $99.4 million—and couldn't even cross the 10% threshold critics set for 94's. It sits at just 5% on Rotten Tomatoes with a viewer average of 18%. To quote film historian Leonard Maltin, "The 1994 movie was one of the worst films ever inspired by a video game; it should have been titled Four Hundred Funerals and No Sex. Yet this bomb makes it predecessor seem like Gone With the Wind." Yes, it is that bad. Its script is bland; its characters are underwritten; and it's a martial arts movie where the fight scenes and choreography just aren't good. For a game known for its flying fisticuffs, that's quite a predicament. Chun-Li's issues with what should be its signature moments is a little befuddling. It was directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak—who'd served as the cinematographer on several high-profile movies and had also helmed other movies in this genre. Not to say that Cradle to the Grave and Romeo Must Die are excellent or anything, but they're certainly more competent than this. In Chun-Li, the action scenes are hacked to death, quick cutting from one moment to the next. And when Chun-Li finally unleashes her iconic "Spinning Bird Kick," it's lost in the haze of a diluted camera filter. These problems are entirely attributable to the movie's casting. From Neal McDonough as an Irish M. Bison to Taboo (yes, the guy from the Black Eyed Peas) as Vega to Kristen Kreuk as the titular hero, it's sort of a nightmare. Their lack of training and martial arts acumen are far too apparent. Save for Chris Klein, who's the only person who seems to understand the kind of movie he's in, as Charlie Nash and Robin Shou as Gen, the movie would be virtually unwatchable. Robin, you deserved better. So sit back, spin-kick the cap off of a Tsingtao from Tsingtao Brewery, and polish up your Hadouken! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are taking to the streets to throw down with M. Bison and his magical tiger fists! Episode Notes This week the brothers delve into the dim world of video game adaptations with Super Mario Bros (1993) and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009), making this the only podcast with nice things to say about Street Fighter (1994), and also Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas.
No flights! No tights! A whole lotta Kryptonite! Join Dan and Faith for a look back at the show that brought Clark Kent to the CW (or is it WB...we get confused!), Superman to 21st century television, and gave the future superhero his greatest challenge: HIGH SCHOOL! TOM WELLING (The Fog remake, Cheaper By The Dozen, Draft Day) stars as high school freshman Clark Kent, a teenager with unique abilities growing up in the meteor capital of the world, Smallville, Kansas. ANNETTE O'TOOLE (48 Hours, Superman III) and everyone's favorite good ole boy JOHN SCHNEIDER (The Dukes of Hazzard, Snow Day) star as Clark's adoptive parents Jonathon and Martha Kent. KRISTIN KREUK (Eurotrip, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) is Lana Lang, the girl next door, and MICHAEL ROSENBAUM (Urban Legend, Cursed) brings a fresh take to arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. The entire ten season run of SMALLVILLE is currently available to stream on Hulu and can be purchased digitally. Somebody save me!
This week marks our first franchise reboot with Hollywood's second attempt at a Street Fighter film, and it's not as bad as we thought it was going to be. Familiar faces don't make up for bad casting, but the action is fun and the plot is just dull enough to not sting us while we're watching. There's lots to talk about besides the film this week though as Disney+ finally fixes The Simpsons when Fox wouldn't, The CW's Arrowverse faces its first major recast with the departure of Ruby Rose from Batwoman, It's Always Sunny breaks records with its latest season renewal, and our favorite blue blur is dashing back to the silver screen. Also, Drew really wants you to watch Space Force on Netflix. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/absentminded/message
Week Three of Video Game Month finds the boys waxing nostalgic over the good old days when Street Fighter movies were enjoyable and had at least ONE Van Damme in them, as they put themselves through the ringer with this un-asked-for reboot starring Smallville's Squishface McCrier and Chris Klein as well as a cameo from some guy from the Black Eyed Peas. So grab a drink, sit back, and ask yourself "Isn't anyone going to help that man over there??!" --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/refund-theater/support

But this time, the duo are not alone! Joining the pair is Jesse Balzer, the PhD candidate behind the research project "Ruining Trailers." This week on the show, in honour of our dear friend Rob O'Sullivan, who has recently had his birthday and is still fighting the good fight in hospital following his life changing car accident, we decided to take on Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. We chose this movie because Rob is a massive Street Fighter fan (although the same cannot be said for Rob or any of us regarding this awful, awful movie). In the second half, we discussed the best and worst video game movie adaptations in general, with the consensus being that many are terrible, with only a few being decent at best. Killscreen Cinema 50. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li The Killscreen Cinema gang take on [...] The post 50. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li appeared first on The Destination.
It took 15 years for filmmakers to hit the reset button on Street Fighter, with a second movie ditching JCVD’s paramilitary squad in favor of an origin story for kung fu pianist Chun-Li. Does Smallville star Kristin Kreuk prove legendary in the title role? Is Oscar-nominated giant Michael Clarke Duncan slumming for work by teaming up with unconscionable real estate developer Bison (Neal McDonough)? Is embarrassment the reason Black Eyed Peas rapper Taboo won’t remove that mask? I gotta feeling confused video game players will have a good good night when they listen now.

Oh screw everything. Time for another mistake. Let's talk about a film that is definitely not a comedy like Rush Hour. All it has are those Billy Zane eyes.
Kidnapping, murder, gentrification, abortion, infanticide, sociopathic orphans, domestic violence, funerals and extended captivity. What do all these themes have in common? They can all be found in a fighting-video-game movie aimed at families but made for no one! This week Matt and Bob ask local socialite, scientist, dog-owner, Meg Mercieca, to choose a movie and she thankfully pointed to the UNLEASHED AND URATED DVD of STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI! Is Neal Mcdonough's Bison one of the most disgusting villains to ever grace the straight-to-video screen? How hard did Kristen Kreuk's extensive fight training go before her dreams were crushed by the final product? Did you know Liu Kang was in this? The Retronauts holiday tradition continues with a fourth trip to our cabin in Parts Unknown, and, due to popular demand, this year's special marks a return to the Movie Month style of episodes we did a few years ago! Join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Ray Barnholt, and Laser Time's Chris Antista for a long, painful look at 2009's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, a box office bomb that's mostly been forgotten (and with good reason). Kristin Kreuk and Chris Klein star in this kind of sequel to 1994's Street Fighter. When Chun-Li is given a mysterious scroll, she engages in her own hero's journey to find out if her father is still alive. Or is it defeat Bison? Or clean up the slums of Bangkok? Meanwhile Chris Klein squints his way through his role as an Interpol agent hot on her heels. Or Bison's. Also everyone knows magic.
