You may think you know the Nintendo story: a plumber named Mario, a princess named Zelda… and didn't they buy the Seattle Mariners at some point? We thought we knew it too. And then we started researching and were blown away. The lovable Disney-like Nintendo that we know today is a 130 year-old a playing card company (i.e. gambling), forged in the shadowy world of the Yakuza and shaped by a four-generation cycle of bitter family betrayal. And its unlikely transformation into a global multi-billion dollar media monopoly was led by an iron-fisted patriarch who — amazingly — never played a video game in his life! Welcome to March 10th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate Scottish pipes and a brave little plumber. Anna: Hey Marlo, word association…I say bagpipes, you say? Marlo: Scotland Anna: Yup, bagpipes are considered to be from Scotland but the origins may go as far back as the Hittites in 1000 BCE! Bagpipes appeared in Europe in the early 1000's and are explicitly mentioned in The Canterbury Tales from around 1380. After the Scottish uprising of 1745 the loyalist government banned bagpipes. But today, bagpipes are a symbol of Scotland and known the world over. On International Bagpipe Day, celebrate the Ceòl mór of the pipes. If your name is Mario get ready to kick up your feet, this day has your name all over it. But just a heads up, the one we are celebrating has a brother named Luigi, and he has earned the day off for all his heroic feats. Jumping over barrels, stomping on killer turtles, racing go karts over rainbow highways. There's not much this brave little plumber hasn't done. Since his first appearance in Donkey Kong way back in 1981, Mario has become the most popular character in video game history. Today celebrates anyone named Mario, but this video game icon is the most famous of the bunch. On National Mario Day, dust off an old copy of Super Mario Brothers and spend a few hours saving the world from Bowser and his evil Koopa Troopers. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Shigeru Miyamoto has developed some of the most popular games of all time including Mario which is the most successful game franchise ever. Mario has actually been in 250 videogames and The Super Mario Brothers movie was the first major motion picture ever made based on a videogame. Well maybe that one was a little regrettable, but I'm sure the next Mario movie will be great. Interestingly though, Miyamoto's big break came largely by accident. When he was first hired by Nintendo, he was making designs for their game cabinets. Nintendo had grossly overestimated the popularity of a game called Radar Scope and found themselves with 2,000 cabinets in need of a new game. They wanted to make a Popeye game, but couldn't get the rights so Miyamoto came up with a new concept and Donkey Kong was born. When his game was released in 1981, it pulled in $200million and Miyamoto was quickly put in charge of game development. Do you remember your first video game? Do you remember learning how to play that game? If you're like me, probably not. For me, Super Mario Brothers just made sense. There was trial and error, but nothing too challenging. So why do us as parents feel pulled to teach our kids how to enjoy our favorite medium? Is it even possible? And where do we draw the line between trying to guide and letting them fail. And ultimately, how did we, as young gamers, navigate this surprisingly tricky pastime with no help whatsoever. Welcome to Episode 284 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things pop culture provided that our DVR's have space and our streaming accounts are paid up. This week, the Geeks (Mitch, & Jake), joined by Reese Jenniges and Jake's friend Hunter, are virtually together to discuss all things geek. The Super Mario Brothers looks like it'll be a fun movie and is causing some excitement. Jake talks some Apple TV+ shows, such as Spirited and Slow Horse. We talk some Wednesday, which has been a great show to watch! Jake's friend Hunter is getting caught up on the MCU, and finally we do a dive into Titans. Is it the "Worst Best Show" on Television, or the "Best Worst Show", due to its writing and acting? It can be awesome and so bad at the same time! And lastly, Hogan's Heroes and how star Bob Crane got his skull caved in by a co-star he filmed having rough sex. What are your thoughts? Super Mario Brothers is a beloved video game. The adventures of Mario and Luigi have crossed over into many different media. This includes the genre of film. On this episode of The PVDcast, I discuss the 1993 film, Super Mario Bros. and the upcoming animated film. As you will hear, this topic is truly controversial, splitting the fans into two distinct camps. This discussion took place at this year's Galaxy Con Columbus, as part of the convention's line up of panels. Don't forget to rate, review and subscribe to the show.
On this episode of LOL, the crew does some Bochinche Bites and dishes about John Leguizamo being angry about the new Super Mario Brothers movie not casting a Latino plumber, Pete Davidson dating another celebrity beauty, a former Miss Argentina and Miss Puerto Rico announcing their marriage, and a 100 year old man getting a lap dance for his birthday.

Timothy Isaac, otherwise known as parknride_469 was a caught in the Greenville, Ohio sting. He is best known for his uncanny resemblance to Mario from the Super Mario Brothers series. 41 at the time, Isaac began chatting with a girl he believed to be fifteen that went by the screen name “sadie_the_smarty”. After finding out her age, he immediately begins asking her very personal questions, such as the panties she was wearing, if she was still a virgin, and if she would ever go out with someone his age.

When are people going to stop trippin over cartoon characters? lol We talk about the new trailer that dropped for the Chris Pratt led latest CGI animated movie, Super Mario Brothers! What many expect is not necessarily what you're going to get! But again, it's a kid movie so, stop trippin lolWe talk about some of the iconic performances at this years BET awards, which one gave Joey goose bumps, why were we yelling "Git it girrl!" Plus a Pass The Mic that was one of the best ones yet! We break it down for you!Jenna Ortega is killin it! Her portrayal of Wednesday Adams is looking better & better with every new trailer & clip that's been released! But why are we so upset about this missed opportunity with the new Tim Burton spin-off, "Wednesday"!? We also talk about a terrible throwback movie called "Silent Night, Deadly Night" that spawned several sequels...but why are we talking about Christmas movies, well that' because David Harbour aka Hopper (Stranger Things) just dropped a new trailer for his upcoming Santa Claus movie "Violent Night"! Yikes, this one looks wild lol@JoeyBravo @AlliyahMarie208 @SippinTeaWithJoeyAndMarie @LatinaPodcasters @LatinoPods

Hello, everyone. Welcome or welcome back to 3-minute Japanese. Today's topic is money. Money is so deeply rooted in our lives from young age. Some of us may have learned the role and meaning of money through board games such as Monopoly, and video games such as Super Mario Brothers or through allowance we received from our parents in real life. Some people instinctively ace the game of money and have a large list of things they can buy, and a lot of people are just getting by, others are sadly scraping by. So what is money? We learn about the origin of a currency system, where people started using tokens instead of barter exchange. I often hear the following: Money is a tool. Money is energy. Time is money. Money is a store of value. I won't go too deep on the philosophical route about money here, but I would like to make space to think about money in the next few series as its form is constantly changing, whether that's credit cards, digital currency, or cryptocurrency. The form of making a living is also changing, especially in the past couple of years thanks to the modern technology. That's it for today. In the next episode, we will talk about “o” in “okane”, the word for money in Japanese. Stay tuned. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/juliasachiko/message
Today Emily reveals that her recent neighbor friend has been acting different since we first heard about him earlier this week. Is he stalking her now? Well, not quite, but the real reason is a bit more cringeworthy. Find out more as we laugh and lament on today's Leftovers, the segment where Em shares stories she doesn't mention on her morning show. We also invite our friends from the Texas Roller Derby to the studio for a brief interview and a fun game! Blocktoberfest is back in action, so you'll want to check it out. Come support our local derby ladies! Check out the details about Texas Roller Derby here. Find those event details as well! There's more, but, come on, it's Friday for me. I want to leave. I want to go home. I want to sleep. Just listen to the episode. What are you doing wandering this far into the description? Did you decide you wanted to read instead of listen to something? By all means, go ahead. But come back and listen to this episode. It's fun and informative. Okay, bye. Ben adds a couple more pasta shapes to last weeks list. Does anyone in your family call sauce gravy? Is elbow the best for mac and cheese? Steve blacks out. Ben recommends eating pasta from Misi in Brooklyn, but you won't get in without an Aya. Where the app developers at?! Good Steer closes its doors after 70 years and the guys miss their shot to have one last cheese dream and a convo with their pal, Bob. If only The Walking Dead would take some notes… nobody wanted another TWD spin-off. Tales of the Walking Dead will premier August 14th. Steve can't stop bringing everything back to Breaking Bad, but thankfully Anthony pulls Gustavo from that world to The Boys world and The Guys recap the last two episodes of season 3 and speculate the future of the show (45:50).
