After years in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the blockbuster survival horror video game Resident Evil finally hit screens in 2002. As opposed to just retelling a story fans were already familiar with, this was intended to be a prequel featuring a new set of characters and references to the series deeper lore. That's... sort of what this is. Not really. And as a result, the film's financial success was offset by a backlash from gamers who didn't appreciate the bait and switch. Or a Resident Evil that was light on gore and heavy on post-Matrix style action. But now that we're on the eve of Zach Cregger's reboot, we thought it would be a good time to take a look back at where it all began for RE on the big screen. Topics include: earlier incarnations that were more reflective of the first game, George A. Romero's involvement with the project (and unceremonious departure), why Paul W.S. Anderson was exactly the right guy for the approach the producers favored, how many similarities this shares with his eventual Alien Vs. Predator film, the make-up and effects, whether or not the lack of gore is the real issue here, thoughts on the sequels, hopes for the reboot, and much more! This week, we review Mortal Kombat (1995), Paul W.S. Anderson's action-packed martial arts fantasy based on the iconic Midway video game franchise. Robin Shou, Linden Ashby, and Bridgette Wilson star as Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade — three warriors chosen to fight in an ancient interdimensional tournament to save Earth from the clutches of the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung, played by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. With Christopher Lambert presiding over the chaos as the thunder god Raiden, and Outworld already sitting on nine wins out of ten, the stakes couldn't be higher. This film raises intriguing questions about what it truly means to fight for humanity — and whether a dodgy CGI lizard man is really the best line of defence. Is Mortal Kombat a finishing move or a finishing disaster?

Simon McQuoid Mortal Kombat (2021) was an unexpected hit and good time. The fans wanted a few things changed but It's safe to say it was far and above what was expected after the 1997 disaster. Mortal Kombat II gave fans more of what they wanted but at the sacrifice of the little story that made the 2021 film so unexpectedly great. MKII has more Kano, some excellent Johnny Cage, and more fights between destined characters (and a few deaths!). What was your take on it? This week on The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey revisit one of the most iconic video game adaptations of the 1990s, Mortal Kombat (1995). With Mortal Kombat II arriving in cinemas, the pair head back to the original tournament to find out whether this cult classic still holds up nearly three decades later.Three martial arts warriors journey to a faraway island to battle for the fate of the Earth realm. It's dumb. It's glorious. And it absolutely holds up more than you'd expect. From nostalgia-fuelled memories of seeing the film at the drive-in, to breaking down the surprisingly strong fight choreography, practical effects, and unforgettable techno soundtrack, Jamie and Corrina dig into what made this adaptation a standout in an era when video game movies rarely worked. They also unpack the film's wild casting “what ifs”, including alternate choices for Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Raiden, plus behind-the-scenes trivia around Goro's infamous animatronic suit and the production challenges faced by director Paul W.S. Anderson.Highlights Breakdown: - Why Mortal Kombat (1995) remains a nostalgic favourite for longtime fans - The surprisingly impressive practical effects, costumes, and production design - How the film influenced Mortal Kombat lore, including Kano becoming Australian - Why the original techno soundtrack is still iconic - Comparing the 1995 cult classic to the 2021 reboot and upcoming sequelDoes Mortal Kombat deserve its reputation as one of the best early video game adaptations? Oberzombie Lucas Barwenczik (CUTS, Gelesen. Phew!
On this episode of Geek Freaks Headlines, we break down Sega's next video game-to-movie swing: a new House of the Dead film. We cover why Sega is calling it a priority after the success of the Sonic movies, the early details around Isabela Merced starring and executive producing, and what it could mean that Paul W.S. Anderson is directing. The big hook is the “real-time” approach, and we talk through why that could actually fit the frantic, arcade-style energy of the original 1997 game, plus what it might signal for a new wave of zombie movies.00:00 – Sega's new House of the Dead movie push and why it's a “priority”00:08 – Isabela Merced attached as lead and executive producer00:14 – Paul W.S. Anderson directing and what that suggests for tone00:14 – The “real-time” pitch and why it could work for this franchise00:27 – The game's arcade legacy, the chaos factor, and the pressure-cooker vibe00:42 – The old House of the Dead movie flopped, plus the bigger zombie-movie moment00:51 – Wrap-up and weekend sendoffSega is treating House of the Dead as a major film priority, likely fueled by how well game adaptations have been performing lately.Isabela Merced being both the lead and an executive producer is a meaningful signal that she's closely involved in shaping the project.Paul W.S. Anderson is a very specific kind of fit for this material, which can be exciting or worrying depending on your tolerance for his style. The “events in real time” concept is the most interesting creative angle so far, especially for a story built around constant pressure and momentum. The original game's identity is more “panic and pace” than deep lore, so a two-hour, continuous survival scenario could be the smartest way to translate it.Between this and fresh Resident Evil momentum, we might be heading into another era where zombie stories get a big studio push again.“The pitch is that this movie is going to be immersive. They're going to show the events in real time.”“If you are watching a movie that is, say, two hours and it's actually a two hour slice of a zombie invasion, maybe that anxiety will play a part in it.”“It didn't make a House of the Dead movie back in the day. Your favorite sleep-deprived monsters return this week to dive headfirst into Mortal Kombat (1995), directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and its chaotic little gremlin cousin Mortal Kombat:Annihilation (1997), directed by John R. Leonetti. What begins as nostalgic love for flying bicycle kicks, techno bangers, and flawless '90s vibes quickly mutates into a full-scale emotional fatality. We lovingly scream about how the first Mortal Kombat is still a beautiful, dumb, perfect arcade fever dream where every punch sounds like someone slapping a rotisserie chicken and every slow-motion kick feels like cinema history. Paul W.S. Anderson gave us glowing eyes, practical sets, unforgettable character entrances, and a soundtrack that could legally be classified as a controlled substance. This movie didn't just raise us — it babysat us while our parents were in Blockbuster arguing about late fees. Then… we willingly walk into the Outworld disaster zone that is Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, a sequel that bravely asks the question: “What if we replaced half the cast, forgot how physics works, and spent the entire budget on Party City cosplay and unfinished CGI dragons?” We spiral into madness over:•Johnny Cage getting deleted faster than a bad tweet•Raiden turning into a dust cloud instead of, you know, lightning (sir???)•Random characters popping in like cursed Pokémon cards•Animalities happening whenever they feel emotionally ready•A centaur that may or may not be two American Gladiators sewn together in a garageAt some point the episode completely derails into debates about centaur anatomy, bad sequel trauma, why Scorpion keeps shooting demon snakes instead of a perfectly good spike-on-a-rope, and how this movie taught us — as children — that sometimes art hurts you on purpose.Through laughter, yelling, nostalgic joy, and light emotional damage, we celebrate what makes the Mortal Kombatmovie franchise endlessly rewatchable: insane fight choreography, iconic characters, wildly questionable creative choices, and the kind of beautiful stupidity only '90s genre cinema could deliver.CREEP-O-RAMA is: Store: CREEP-O-RAMAYouTube: @creep-o-ramaJosh: @joshblevesqueArtwork: @bargainbinblasphemyTheme: @imfigureAudio: @stranjlove
