Mark and Norbert discuss the 2004 sci-fi action film Alien vs. Predator. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and starring Sanaa Lathan, Lance Henricksen and several beefy Yautja hunters, the movie focuses on what happens when dummy aliens attempt to battle xenomorphs (it ends badly). In this episode, they also talk about epic fights, ice time and a smokeshow of an archaeologist.Make sure to listen to the other Alien franchise episodes that Norbert and I have recorded. Get ready to reside in pure evil as Dan and Sarah kick off Season 12 of Shoot the Hostage with a deep dive into the 2002 action horror film, Resident Evil! After our last season got us all hooked on movies about drugs, we're booting up a brand new theme: video game movies! And who better to start with than the master of computer game adaptations, director Paul W.S. Anderson? Join us as we explore the cult classic that spawned a franchise (and a very specific type of career for its director). We're talking Milla Jovovich's transformation into an action icon, her real-life romance with Anderson, and the shocking revelation that her role as Alice was nearly a damsel in distress! We also discuss the memorable contributions of Michelle Rodriguez as Rain, and the unforgettable, meat-cubed moment starring Colin Salmon. Brace yourselves for our unfiltered thoughts on the film's dated CGI, its "edgy" Marilyn Manson-infused soundtrack, and the curious case of the always-convenient amnesia trope. We unpack why George A. Romero's original script was deemed too violent, and how the movie makes some surprising Alice in Wonderland connections. Is it a faithful movie adaptation? Is it even a good film? And is it truly a zombie movie, or just a reanimated corpse of a good idea? Here's what to expect from this Resident Evil deep dive: How Resident Evil (2002) kicks off our new season of video game movie adaptations Dan's long history with PlayStation and Sarah's gaming preferences The career of director Paul W.S. Anderson and his frequent collaborator Milla Jovovich Why George A. Romero's original Resident Evil script was deemed "too violent" for Hollywood Our thoughts on the infamous laser hallway scene and Colin Salmon's cubed fate. Why the film's "edgy" soundtrack, co-composed by Marilyn Manson, might give you a headache. A debate on if Resident Evil truly counts as a zombie movie and where it ranks amongst them. Insights into why computer game adaptations are notoriously difficult to get right, and how this film stacks up. Would you like to see the full lineup for season 12? September 5, 2025 ~ Jamie Furbush, CEO, Frankenmuth Convention and Visitors Bureau talks to Paul W about what's new and exciting in Frankenmuth.
“Do you see?” We never imagined discussing an Event Horizon comic on the podcast, but the moment the notion was floated, we were enthralled. The original 1997 movie, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, struck a chord back in the day, but it was also a movie that was obviously jumbled about and fumbled in the editing room. And since the story relied on the device of a spaceship lost in a black hole/literal hell for decades, it so easily allows for prequel expansion. All that's required are the perfect creators to expand the material. Maybe even mend some of it. Christian Ward and Tristan Jones are the perfect creators for Event Horizon. If you've read their work, especially Ward's time on Batman: City of Madness and Jones' time on Aliens, you're probably already subscribed to the new prequel series from IDW Publishing. Event Horizon: Dark Descent tells the story of the original starship crew who ignited the Gravity Drive, popped into the space between spaces, and found their damnation in the abyss. It's always a pleasure to have Christian Ward on the podcast, but this week, that's especially true because we're all geeking out about the original movie, discussing how it influences all of his work, and why prequels are a damn good narrative delivery system. Yes, we talk about trauma and therapy, but also demons and personifying hell in the most joyful comic booky fashion. Event Horizon: Dark Descent is the best book you didn't expect in 2025. Let's all go to hell together. Event Horizon: Dark Descent is written by Christian Ward, illustrated by Tristan Jones, colored by Pip Martin, and lettered by Alex Ray. Variant Covers by Jeffrey Alan Love. Issue 1 is now available from IDW Publishing, and FOC for Issue 2 is Today (9/1/25). Call your shop and get subbed. Also, continue this conversation with Christian Ward by visiting his Website and following him on Blue Sky and Instagram. We gush over the film's incredible production design, moody atmosphere, and a first half that lets the crew (and the dread) breathe. This week Parker from @DissectThatFilm joins us as we dust off a forgotten slice of late-'90s sci-fi action with Paul W.S. Anderson's Soldier (1998), starring a mostly silent but fully shredded Kurt Russell. From the bleak wastelands of junk planets to the emotionally stunted heart of a genetically bred killing machine, we're breaking down the brutal, the bizarre, and the surprisingly heartfelt moments in this cult favorite. Was Soldier ahead of its time or just another discarded relic from the video store shelves? We talk military programming, emotional reawakening, slow-motion explosions—and how this film might secretly be a cousin to Blade Runner.

Computer game adaptations: perhaps the least respected form of film-making around. And let's face it, the ratio of good films to bad films is pretty darn low. This week, we team up with the guys from the Grandad and Mr Tech gaming podcast to have a close look at two much maligned entries in this subgenre: Street Fighter (1994), directed by Steven E. de Souza, and Mortal Kombat (1995), directed by Paul W.S Anderson. Tune in, sit back, and FINISH IT!!! Let's just say, plot is somewhat secondary in importance to the conception of both of these films. so we won't be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for either of them. If you are on tenterhooks about the dramatic resolution of either of these films, please watch them before listening (our advice: don't worry too much about that). Want to get in touch? Paul W. Werth, How Russia Got Big: A Territorial History (Bloomsbury, 2025) “Even people who know little about Russia know that it is big.” Thus Paul Werth begins his forthcoming book, How Russia Got Big: A Territorial History. The geographical expanse of the Russian Empire—known since the eighteenth century to span 1/6 of the earth—has been widely marveled upon. Scholars have explained Russia's size variously: an urge to the sea; a search for natural borders in landscapes lacking them; entrepreneurial happenstance; an insatiable hunger for conquest and more territory; a special world-historical mission. Explanations and answers, especially given Russia's invasion of its sovereign neighbor, Ukraine, are highly charged. In this small book on a big topic, Werth assembles a rivetingly concise account of what constituted the territory of Muscovy, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation when. The result is a startlingly refreshing synthesis that sets him up to consider the deeper ‘hows' and ‘whys' of Russian expansion and longevity. Among multiple constructive insights, Werth's analysis lays bare numerous ways in which sovereignty can be more gray than black and white—thought-provoking circumstances he frames as ‘Russia Beyond' and ‘Russia Within'. Listen in on this conversation where we talk about this book slated for release in September 2025. Paul Werth is professor of History at University of Nevada-Las Vegas. In addition to the forthcoming How Russia Got Big, he is the author of four monographs, numerous scholarly articles, and two edited volumes on Imperial Russian history, as well as a textbook. He served as the editor of the journal Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian Studies for many years. In 2022 he was named a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. In the Spring of 2023 he was the Gerhard Casper Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin, and in Spring of 2024, a fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies in Uppsala. Min 4. Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we explore some of cinema's biggest box failures and decide if they deserve a second chance. In this episode, Troy and Brad discuss one of the most underrated science fiction films of the last 30 years—a film that raises the intriguing question: “What if Kurt Russell didn't have a mullet?” This week, they delve into the 1998 film Soldier, which some consider a potential sidequel to Blade Runner. This film stretches the limits of "face acting"—and maybe even Paul Anderson's directing chops. Is it worth a second watch? Does Russell manage to leave a mark with just 104 words of dialogue? And will Brad at long last reconcile his oddly specific obsession with child death in cinema? Tune in to find out!Soldier is directed by Paul W.S. Topics:Why PE Should Hire VeteransNavigating the Challenges of Growing CompaniesHow Mentors Play a Role in Breaking into PE...and so much more.Top TakeawaysWhat do your company and a brontosaurus have in common? As businesses grow, founders often struggle with transitioning from generalist roles to more focused leadership. Professor Carter Cast's HBR article describes the Dinosaur Diagnostic that uses the brontosaurus' long neck to illustrate the growth curve. This diagnostic helps you pinpoint when it's time to hire functional experts and stick to just your leadership hat. Understanding when and how to make this shift is essential for setting a company up for scalable success.Acquisitions often stumble when integration begins. To avoid the "merger of equals" trap, establish clear leadership early, define KPIs, and integrate companies under one unified identity. Without proper management and measurable goals, acquisitions risk chaos, with overlapping teams and conflicting cultures. A dedicated integration team ensures smooth execution and helps keep everything on track.Tip for transitioning veterans: start early and build a strong network. Transitioning from military to civilian life takes planning, so start at least a year in advance. Also, a mentor can make the process smoother by providing guidance and industry insights. In mentoring sessions, be ready to connect your military skills to civilian roles and ask thoughtful questions that show your genuine interest in the industry. With the right support, veterans can thrive in finance, offering fresh perspectives and strong leadership.About Paul W. Swaney IIIPaul W. [This is an encore of Episode 100, originally released November 9, 2022]. Paul's award-winning achievements in the music industry are beyond compare. His work has woven itself into the fabric of 20th and 21st century popular culture. His memorable songs have touched multiple generations around the world. But, as with many alcoholics, Paul's genius grew out of a Dickensian childhood, full of family upheavals and physical challenges that left him with little solace, save his song-writing. By the time alcohol and drugs entered the picture in his early 20's, his musical talents had been honed into a career in which he enjoyed unbridled creativity and massive success during the 1970's. But Paul's burgeoning alcoholism cunningly resided off-stage, in the shadows of his own denial and the enabling of those around him. By 1989, after a decade lost to the disease, Paul faced the bleak reality of his alcoholism and its devastating effects on his life and those he loved. As the gates of hell loomed ever-larger with each passing day, a series of “God-moments” occurred that brought Paul to his knees at the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous. Willing to embrace AA's Program of action, he embarked on a spiritual journey that ultimately saved him. Over the years, he has offered his experience and hope to countless alcoholics, both inside and outside the rooms. Infusing his own fame and fortune with the humility of one who has thoroughly worked a spiritually-guided Program, Paul enjoys his broad role as a trusted servent to those who need AA now or may need it in the future. His gentle, yet powerful, words of encouragement and hope are every bit as inspiring and heart-felt as the songs he created over the years. The challenges of producing an anonymous interview with someone so well-known were considerable. But both Paul and I turned the final outcome over to a power greater than ourselves. I believe you will be pleased by the results. Unfortunately, the sound quality is less than stellar as Zoom was somewhat glitchy the day of the interview. But give it a few minutes. Paul's story will whisk you away to a clear and wonderful awareness of his words. So please enjoy the next hour and ten minutes of AA Recovery Interviews, my one hundredth podcast, as you listen to the insightful and exhilarating words of my friend and AA brother, Paul W. If you've enjoyed my AA Recovery Interviews series, have a listen to Lost Stories of the Big Book, 30 Original Stories Missing from the 3rd and 4th Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an engaging audiobook I narrated to bring these stories to life for AA members who've never seen them. These timeless testimonials were originally cut to make room for newer stories in the 3rd and 4th Editions. But their vitally important messages of hope are as meaningful today as when they were first published. Many listeners will hear these stories for the first time. Lost Stories of the Big Book is available on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. It's also available as a Kindle book and in Paperback from Amazon if you'd like to read along with the audio. I also invite you to check out my latest audio book, “Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism”. This is the word-for-word, cover-to-cover reading of the First Edition of the Big Book, published in 1939. It's a comfortable, meaningful, and engaging way to listen to the Big Book anytime, anyplace. Have a free listen at Audible, i-Tunes, or Amazon. My friend Paul Peterson (married father of 3, lives in Arkansas, Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Valdosta State University, owns/runs his own practice) joins us to talk about how we can know we are whole/perfect now and we are always loved by God—and tools to absolutely accept this. Paul talks about how this helps us to “become”—not from a feeling of shame/brokenness—but from a position of strength, fully understanding our identity as a beloved child of God. Paul brings his personal experience, academic training, theological understanding, and professional experience to make this a reality in our lives. I was deeply moved (and calmed) listening to Paul. I encourage everyone to check out this episode and read Paul's book—I believe it will help you and give you more tools to help others. Thank you, Paul, for being on the podcast and your much needed work in our community. It is good people like you that give me hope.
