Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Fez. We talk about its platforming and how it fits to taste, game style, and rule escalation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: More cubes! Issues covered: platforming feelings and taste, inspirations and how they play out here, additional move set, floaty physics, a mental game with mostly generous platforming, a game that takes place in your head rather than in your fingers, seeking high highs, sloppiness and guiding the player, no longer seeing the whole world but only the tells, the pleasure of figuring things out, checking out the achievements, how many people get everything, the craft of the game, wanting to feel capable, finding a solution that was not the intended solution, dominated by the puzzle side, those moments where you give a big "no way," extending a simple idea and iterating on it for a fleshed-out game, iterating ideas, a chain of implication, not making the leaps of logic too large, ladders that line up and teach you how to think about the world, not knowing whether you can do a thing yet, not wanting to diminish the revelations, puzzles games Brett hasn't finished and why, editorial from the publisher and Key Performance Indicators, finding a tribe for your indie game, side games, smaller and more cohesive teams, a choose-your-own-email, having an experience, leaving endings open. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Hollow Knight, Indie Game: The Movie, Phil Fish, Nintendo, Mario (series), Little Big Planet, Guacamelee, Super Mario Galaxy, Demons's Souls, Dark Souls, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Tomb Raider (2013), The Matrix, Deep Thoughts/Jack Handey, MYST, Pierre de Fermat, Megaman, Resident Evil, The Witness, Braid, The Talos Principle, Obduction, Cyan Worlds, Super Meat Boy, Fallout, X-COM, mysterydip, Mass Effect, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Twin Peaks, Half-Life, While We're Young, Noah Baumbach, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: More Fez! Note: Amusingly, though I did not call out the actresses, Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfried appear in While We're Young, and both also appeared in Twin Peaks: The Return Twitch: timlongojr Discord DevGameClub@gmail.com

The series, Who is Jesus?, continues and as we look at John 20:1-10 Pastor Dustin Clegg poses 3 questions to ask of the scripture:1) Why would John record the reactions of Mary and the disciple in an unbelieving light? John was mainly concerned with the facts of the resurrection.2) What was it about the grave clothes that caused John to believe? He knew the body was not stolen.3) Why the stone even moved at all? The stone was moved to let the disciples (and us) in, not to let Jesus out.The message of the resurrection......"Come and see!".

Greg and Nathan dive deep into the themes of justice as portrayed in popular action series like Reacher, Daredevil: Born Again, and Netflix's Tomb Raider, examining how these shows explore the concept of justice in a world often marred by corruption and violence. They discuss the characters' struggles with vengeance, redemption, and moral clarity, drawing parallels between these narratives and the justice found in the gospel. Reflecting on how the gospel presents justice—not as blind retribution but as a path to healing, forgiveness, and restoration—the hosts offer insights on how these modern stories both reflect and contrast with Christ's call to justice and mercy.
Get you popcorn and drink of choice, turn off your brain and just have a good time with Anna's Banger Month pick of 2001s Tomb Raider. Long time friend and first time guest, Daniel from The Geeks with Beards podcast, joins us for a rip-roaring conversation. While not as good as the three Indiana Jones movies (yes, there are ONLY three) but clearly better than King Solomon's Mines, this movie is an enormously fun adventure movie with a ton of ridiculous action perfectly suited for the flavor of the classic video game series. Movies don't have to be "good" to be entertaining and this film is the perfect example of that. With all it's flaws, Tomb Raider is absolutely worth your time. Just don't take it so seriously.

Ubisoft Game, Set, Match | Generation X Gaming #434a huge batch of industry shake-ups! Ubisoft teaming up with Tencent for a $4.3 billion subsidiary is wild—wonder how much control Tencent will have. The Hogwarts Legacy Definitive Edition getting canceled is an interesting move by WB; maybe they're cutting losses or shifting focus. That internal memo from Yves Guillemot could give insight into what Ubisoft's long-term plans are. Also, crazy to hear that Crystal Dynamics is laying off staff—hope this doesn't affect the next Tomb Raider too much. And PS5 owners wanting Xbox games? No surprise there, given the recent shifts in exclusivity.Oh, and the fact that publishers are scared enough of GTA 6 to delay their games? That's just hilarious. We are going back to one of our favourite episodes, Video Game Adaptations, for the third time. Joining me for the third time also is the fabulous Claire from Why the Flick? Warning we will be talking SPOILERS The host is going first for this episode, and is going for a rebooted/prequel video game adaptation in the form of Tomb Raider from 2018 starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. On this one we talk about how they incorporate the video game elements into the story telling. We talk about how the film could be considered over stuffed with action and the story feels more realistic but disappointing by the end. We about the amazing physical performance from Alicia Vikander and the brilliant subtitles from Walton Goggins as the villain. Plus we talk about fox hunting in central London.

Shoot us a text and share your thoughts, game suggestions, etc.!Episode 44 - The Best (and Worst) Retro Game CollectionsLou and I are diving into the world of game compilations, remasters, and collections! Some are incredible value-packed bundles, while others feel like quick cash grabs. But before we go any further, let's get something out of the way—Lou absolutely hates the original Tomb Raider games on PS1. Like, with a passion. He thinks they control like a drunk tank rolling down a hill. So, if you're a Tomb Raider fan, prepare for some heated opinions! We also talk about what makes a game collection truly great. Super Mario All-Stars on SNES set the gold standard, not just bundling games together but actually improving the graphics and gameplay—something modern collections rarely do. On the flip side, we discuss disappointments like Super Mario 3D All-Stars and GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition, which somehow managed to make their games worse. From Rare Replay to The Orange Box, we break down the best bang-for-your-buck collections, while also debating whether digital-only bundles are helping or hurting game preservation. Are these collections the best way to play retro games legally, or is emulation still king? Tune in and find out!Support the showWe've got merch!Check out the site for some awesome Gen 'S' swag :)

TCW Podcast Episode 229 - US Gold US Gold started as an importer of American games before becoming a dominant force in the British gaming industry. Partnering with Ocean Software, they formed a duopoly that shaped the UK and European gaming markets, bringing top titles to 8-bit computers and later expanding into consoles—US Gold backing SEGA while Ocean focused on Nintendo. When competitors began importing Japanese games, US Gold responded by securing a deal with Capcom to port its arcade hits to home computers. As its parent company, CentreGold, went public, US Gold also acquired Core Design—unknowingly setting the stage for gaming history.
