Est-il vraiment un bon film ou si on dit maintenant tout de suite que c'est un film naze comme n'importe quel film du MCU, on devient automatiquement misogyne, on se fait cancel et on arrête le podcast pour de bon ? In July of 2023, just a few weeks before SAG-AFTRA asked podcasters to refrain from discussing struck work, we recorded an episode on the Tomb Raider movie. With the strike over and ending on good terms, we felt it appropriate to finally release this episode to the public. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is a peak 2001 (pre-9/11) movie in which Angelina Jolie is an adventurer seeking to acquire ancient artifacts said to being the key to controlling the flow of time. One of the scariest things for scientists is watching entertainment media portray your field of study inaccurately—the horror! Flood resilience officer and social volcanologist Jazmin Scarlett turned her hobby of playing video games into a paper discussing the depictions of volcanic hazards in games such as Pokémon, LEGO DC Super Villains, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The typical video game volcano nearly always has molten lava, but would these games be even more fun to play if they incorporated fissure eruptions, pyroclastic flows, and the dangerous effects of ash and toxic gasses? Jazmin talked with us about her views on natural disasters in fiction media, what scares her about volcanoes, and why she left volcanology to work on flood resilience with the UK's Environment Agency.
