Ian and Michael from Lord Of Adders Black: A Black mo baadder Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Ian's choice The Death of Stalin. The Death of Stalin (2017) is a satirical black comedy written and directed by Armando (The Thick of It) Iannucci. In the wake of the death of Joseph Stalin, the remaining members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union bicker and fight over who will succeed him. Its ensemble cast includes Steve Buscemi, Simon Russell Beale, Paddy Considine, Rupert Friend, Jason Isaacs, Olga Kurylenko, Michael Palin, Andrea Riseborough, Dermot Crowley, Paul Chahidi, Adrian McLoughlin, Paul Whitehouse, and Jeffrey Tambor. The Death of Stalin attempts to condense a very complex period of what was then the Soviet Union into 1 hour and 47 minutes with added satirical comedy. Its sheer number of key players adds to its denseness. It's tricky balance of humour and people being shot in the head won't be for everyone and the recommendability scores reflected this. The Death of Stalin scores 4.23 overall. Do you have that problem where someone is always asking you to watch a romantic movie but the movie has too much of that, ya know, love and romance? I just might have the solution you've been looking for in this week's movie “Companion.” This movie is a romantic movie in marketing only to perhaps help you get your special someone to watch it with you. Then you'll both get to watch how the movie spins its head and becomes a twisted, malevolent, bloody, yet funny, series of devious plot twists. What kicks off the movie is Josh (Jack Quaid) and Iris (Sophie Thatcher) traveling out to a remote lake house to just have a weekend hang with Josh's buddies. It's a fun, casual environment as they all eat, drink and be merry. Josh and Iris are getting along swimmingly with everyone else. Then something deadly happens and Josh and company have to go into “we're on a mission” mode before any devious plans are revealed and more people die. Who will live? Who will die? Who will try this apple pie I just made? Is it worth finding out? Check out this episode to see. “Companion” also stars Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillen, Rupert Friend, Jaboukie Young-White, Matt McCarthy, Marc Menchaca, Woody Fu and Ashley Lambert. We finally received an update on the second of the two WandaVision spinoffs in development, with the news that Marvel has enlisted Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas as showrunner for the untitled Vision series. Details remain sparse, but we know that Paul Bettany will reprise his role as the albino synthezoid and Marvel Studios is eyeing a 2026 Disney+ release. The 2024 summer movie season continues to struggle as newcomers Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie, essentially tied for the number one spot for the holiday weekend, each debuting at a muted $31 million; the worst Memorial Day weekend at the box office in almost 30 years. Furiosa particularly came in lower than estimates as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road and receiving the same B+ Cinemascore. Advance tickets for Deadpool & Wolverine became available last Monday, resulting in an estimated 200,000 tickets sold for roughly $9 million and enough to break the record for first-day, R-rated ticket sales. Subsequently, at still two months out, it leads 2024 in all presales with all signs pointing to it being the year's first $100 million plus opening weekend.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Wingard, director of the last two MonsterVerse films, will not return for the third installment due to timing issues. The split is amicable, with a future return possible. Netflix revealed a first look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. Hemsworth replaces Henry Cavill for the final two seasons, with season 4's release date currently to be determined. Glen Powell revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he recently turned down major roles, including the upcoming Jurassic World film and a reboot of The Bourne Identity. Damon Lindelof, one of the co-creators of Lost and The Watchmen is officially behind the creative team for the upcoming Green Lantern series for DC Studios. Chris Mundy, the showrunner behind Netflix's crime series Ozark, as well as long-time DC comic author Tom King round out the creative team. Netflix released the first trailer for Beverly Hills: Axel F, featuring Eddie Murphy returning as Axel Foley. The new film, following the original 1984 release and its sequels, will stream starting July 3. Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel to Showtime's Dexter announced casting of Patrick Gibson playing young Dexter, Molly Brown; his sister Debra, and Christian Slater portraying their adoptive father. The premiere date is yet to be announced. Warner Brothers dropped a new trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice that features a more extended look at the cast. The film debuts in theaters on September 6. Rian Johnson announces his next Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, releasing on Netflix next year with Daniel Craig reprising his role and lots of other big Hollywood names being added to the cast daily, including Fleabag's Andrew Scott. Rupert Friend, star of Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, will join Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey in Gareth Edwards' new Jurassic film for Universal. Jeffery Wright joins The Last of Us season 2 as Isaac, reprising his role from the video game.

In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Arun and Patricia talks about 4 shorts exclusive on Netflix written and directed by Wes Anderson, the writer and director of Fantastic Mr. Fox. They are The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar, The Rat Catcher, The Swan, and Poison starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Rupert Friend, Richard Ayoade, and Ben Kingsley. The Swan is about a 15-year-old boy who is tormented and bullied by two kids who are going around and killing birds with a hunting rifle. Poison is about two British soldiers stationed in India. One of them is laying in bed very still with a poisonous snake in his stomach and the other is reaching out for help to rescue him before it's too late. This week's Nose has gotta be more like a rat than anything else in the world. Cleverer, even, than a rat, and that is not an easy thing to be, let me tell ya. The Nose returns! On September 15, The New Yorker ran a story that reported out a number of embellishments / untruths / lies in Hasan Minhaj's standup specials. Minhaj had reportedly been the frontrunner to become the new permanent host of The Daily Show. On September 27, Variety reported that Comedy Central was going back to square one with their search for a host. And: In September, 2021, Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company for $686 million. Wes Anderson has written and directed adaptations of four Dahl short stories: “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” “Poison,” “The Rat Catcher,” and “The Swan.” They're the first projects released by Netflix as part of their ownership of Dahl's work, and they star a repertory company of actors that includes Ralph Fiennes, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ben Kingsley, Dev Patel, and Rupert Friend. This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we are going to delve into the obsessions of the auteur with this past Summer's Oppenheimer directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Alden Eherenreich, Casey Affleck, Tony Goldwin, and a whole host of blink and you'll miss them celebrity walk-ons, the most since The Muppet Movie, as compared to Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, with his embarrassment of riches cast, Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Adrian Brody, Edward Norton, Jeffrey Wright, Matt Dillon, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton, Maya Hawke, Rupert Friend, Willem Dafoe, Steve Carrell, Hong Chau Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Steve Park, and Margot Robbie. We are also joined by series regulars George Young, David Johnson, DMD, and Roseanne Caputi, who will begin the talk by each defining the word “Twee.” Before we march into the mêlée of the maestros, the synopsis: Oppenheimer tells the story of legendary nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer as he stares into the void a lot, develops the atom bomb and then slights a future contender for the U.S. Senate, who drudges up Oppenheimer's Communist past in an epic IMAX movie of a series of meetings in sweaty conference rooms and senate chambers. While waiting for the return of The Crown, Sam Cheung, Carlyn Greenwald, and Ivan Vukovic, three regular everyday Americans, watch Jean-Marc Vallée's 2009 film The Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent, Mark Strong, and Harriet Walter. Was this a political drama, a low-stakes romance, or a pseudo-thriller? Why not all three! Plus, Ivan shares which movie has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score that he still enjoyed.

Rupert Friend who plays the Grand Inquisitor, talks about playing the character in Obi-Wan Kenobi and reveals he deliberately didn't watch Rebels in order to portray the character in a fresh new way. I disagree with this but hey what do I know, I'm not an actor. With Dave Filoni and Deb Chow involved, I'm sure it'll be fine, but I feel it would be even better if all actors caught up on Rebels and the prequels. Ewan and Hayden Christensen rewatched the prequels and the Clone Wars (Hayden) to prepare for the role they originally portrayed, so I don't think newcomers should take liberties like this...but hey...I'm sure it'll be fine, I'm just a nit picker. Wes Anderson's 11th film is nothing short of brilliant! Keep watching to see my thoughts and full review on Asteroid City which is one of my favorite Wes Anderson films since 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums.
On this special bonus episode of Cinemaholics, we discuss Asteroid City, the latest movie from writer/director Wes Anderson. His new feature has a few things in common with his previous one, The French Dispatch, particularly when it comes to his ability to convince almost every recognizable actor in Hollywood to show up. And show up they did for this quirky sci-fi romantic comedy drama about a Junior Stargazer convention in a 50s desert town where events take an alienating turn, so to speak. Asteroid City was directed and written by Wes Anderson and is based on a story by Anderson and Roman Coppola. The ensemble cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Steve Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, and Jeff Goldblum. The film premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and opens in limited release on June 16 through Focus Features. It will later go wide on June 23. Why, you send Jane, the oldest and prettiest to catch a cold in the rain so rich Mr Bingley will fall in love with her! You let your boring cousin take his pick of the flock, Lizzy; but when she's not into it, he goes off and marries her best friend so your plan is again RUINED! You don't take any of the rest of your daughters seriously, till the youngest one SCANDALOUSLY runs off with Mr Wickham. In the end, neither pride nor prejudice can get in the way of Bennet sisters marrying for love plus, conveniently, carriage-loads of money. Join Jenny Owen Youngs, Helen Zaltzman and Vanessa Zoltan to investigate the 2005 movie adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and investigate such mysteries as whether this could be recut as a horror film, why is everyone so mean to Mary, whether rainstorms are sexy or just soggy, and why the hell are these wigs allowed. This episode is a joyous union between VMI and Vanessa's podcast Hot and Bothered, which is all about romance novels.
