Grab your cricket bat, raid the fridge for a cold one, and head to the Winchester, because this week, the Born to Watch crew are diving deep into one of the smartest and most beloved horror-comedies of all time with their Shaun of the Dead (2004) review. With G-Man MIA (probably off playing Tekken in the shed), Matt and Sir Dimmy hold the fort to break down Edgar Wright's 2004 cult classic that reanimated the zombie genre and redefined the zombie flick with a pint of bitter and a dash of British wit.In this week's episode, the lads explore how Shaun of the Dead walks the tightrope between gore and giggles, creating a film that works just as well as a slacker comedy as it does a horror satire. Damo admits to confusing it with The World's End (don't worry, he's new here), while Matt reveals he's seen the film nearly 20 times and could watch it on loop, especially with a packet of pork crackle and a Pepsi Max.From the iconic walk to the shop (twice), to the Queen-backed zombie beatdown in the Winchester, the boys dissect every major scene with the kind of reverence usually reserved for Tarantino or Scorsese. They also dig into Simon Pegg's breakout role as the titular Shaun, Nick Frost's glorious (and infuriating) turn as Ed, and the supporting cast of Britcom legends including Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, and the ever-reliable Bill Nighy. They ask all the important questions:Is Shaun actually a zombie at the start of the film, who awakens into humanity?Could a pub really be the best place to ride out the apocalypse? And how the hell did Shaun survive that crowd of flesh-eaters outside the Winchester?Damo goes full philosopher, questioning the human condition in the age of smartphones (spoiler: we're all zombies), while Matt wonders why anyone would throw priceless vinyl at the undead. But it's not all jokes and Queen sing-alongs, the episode also touches on the emotional beats of the film, like Shaun's relationship with his mum and stepdad, the heartbreak of watching loved ones turn, and the surprisingly poignant ending that still manages to sneak in one last gag.The boys also fire off rapid takes in “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly,” with highlights like:The perfect pacing and editing of the dual morning walk sequencesThe underappreciated brilliance of the bizarro “mirror crew” sceneAnd Ed's ability to be the most annoying – yet somehow still likeable – flatmate in cinema historyThrow in some choice reviews from critics (both good and hilariously bad), box office trivia, and the revelation that director Edgar Wright used just $4 million to craft a film that grossed over $30 million and launched a thousand pub-themed Halloween costumes, and you've got yourself one hell of a breakdown.Oh, and yes, the team briefly wonders why cricket bats are now over $1,000, a real horror show.So whether you're a diehard fan of the Cornetto Trilogy or new to the undead scene, this episode is a must-listen.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Shaun of the Dead the best zombie comedy ever made?Would you ride out the apocalypse in a pub? And what's the best record to throw at a zombie?#BornToWatch #ShaunoftheDead #EdgarWright #SimonPegg #ZombieComedy #BritishHumour #HorrorComedy #NickFrost #CornettoTrilogy #MoviePodcast

"Fighting VideoLAMES" concludes, with a look at the adaptation at one of the most popular, financially successful fighting game franchises in the world. But even that pedigree wasn't enough to save the movie from a lengthy struggle to even get released. Disregarded by many fans upset over changes to the source material, and equally disavowed by the game's creators, the Tekken movie is arguably one of the lesser-known cinematic video game adaptations. But does any of that necessarily mean it's bad? We're here to discuss that very question, and also ponder what exactly constitutes a "failed franchise," as this movie did manage a sequel of sorts a few years later. So why are we talking about it here? Listen on to find out! Plus, a preview of our upcoming episodes with the selection of our annual "Summer Surprise" movies! fWotD Episode 2949: Namco Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 1 June 2025, is Namco.Namco Limited was a Japanese multinational video game and entertainment company founded in 1955 which operated video arcades and amusement parks globally, produced video games, films, toys, and arcade cabinets. They were one of the most influential figures in the worldwide coin-op and arcade game industry; Namco produced several multi-million-selling game franchises, such as Pac-Man, Galaxian, Tekken, Tales, Ridge Racer, and Ace Combat. In 2006, Namco merged with Bandai to form what is now named Bandai Namco Holdings; the standalone Namco brand continues to be used for video arcade and other entertainment products by the group's Bandai Namco Amusements division. The Namco name comes from Nakamura Manufacturing Company, derived from its founder Masaya Nakamura. In the 1960s, it manufactured electro-mechanical arcade games such as the 1965 hit Periscope. It entered the video game industry after acquiring the struggling Japanese division of Atari in 1974, distributing games such as Breakout in Japan. The company renamed itself Namco in 1977 and published Gee Bee, its first original video game, a year later. Among Namco's first major hits was the fixed shooter Galaxian in 1979. It was followed by Pac-Man in 1980. Namco prospered during the golden age of arcade video games in the early 1980s, releasing popular titles such as Galaga, Xevious, and Pole Position.Namco entered the home market in 1984 with conversions of its arcade games for the MSX and the Nintendo Family Computer, later expanding to competing platforms, such as the Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, and PlayStation. Namco continued to produce hit games in the 1990s, including Ridge Racer, Tekken, and Taiko no Tatsujin, but later endured financial difficulties due to the struggling Japanese economy and diminishing arcade market. This led to the 2005 announcement of a merge with toy maker Bandai, which was completed in 2006 as Namco Bandai Holdings; Namco's former video games division was merged into a subsidiary of the holdings company, Namco Bandai Games, now called Bandai Namco Entertainment. Namco is remembered in retrospect for its unique corporate model, its importance to the industry, and its advancements in technology. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:51 UTC on Sunday, 1 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Namco on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Emma.

26 years is how long the SNK faithful have been waiting for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves to finally arrive, the follow-up to 1999's Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Obviously, comparisons will be made but Fatal Fury has since become a staple that endures in a charming old-school way that contemporary Street Fighter and Tekken entries no longer possess.
@GameAgentET (OGiH) and The Six-Button Samurai are joined by @Hoptimus (RFC) of Retro Futurist Culture to grapple with the arrival of Nintendo Switch 2 after the Direct hype cooled a bit. While we're still pretty excited about the hardware itself, the nickel-and-dime nature of charging for updated visuals for older games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (not to mention overall game prices) feel a bit greedy. The gang also takes on the uneven state of fighting games in 2025, specifically some of the upheaval in the Tekken 8 community following their Season 2 launch, some weird marketing moves from SNK. and what may be next for Street Fighter VI in Season 3. Summer Games Fest is also within shouting distance, and we're intrigued to see what Not-E3 has in store at such a weird point for the industry. The FGC has been in an uproar, and this episode of FGC-Ism pulls no punches. We break down Pakistan's clean sweep over Korea at the latest Tekken 8 pro event — and why Arslan Ash's victory speech stirred the pot. Meanwhile, Tekken 8 Season 2 changes sparked serious backlash from fans and pros worldwide. We also dive into SNK's bold move to add two actual people to the base roster of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, speculate on Elena's return to Street Fighter 6 (and how Nintendo might be holding her hostage), and celebrate the biggest Virtua Fighter 5 Revo online tourney yet — backed by Sega and Maximilian Dood. Finally, we ask the question: what's next for NetherRealm Studios? With no announcements on the horizon, the silence is loud. It's all that and more on this week's FGC-Ism — where we keep it real and frame-perfect. Hosted on Acast. Send us a textThis podcast is about dealing with your identity struggle as part of the Asian diaspora. I share personal stories and sometimes interview others to promote healthy, honest conversations about what it means to carry trauma, resentment, and confusion—and how we move toward peace, joy, and self-love. I don't have all the answers. This is an ongoing conversation. But today, I have a solution: learn martial arts.If you're a young, lost kid struggling with your identity like I was, this can change your life. It might not solve everything, but it will transform you—physically, mentally, emotionally. Go find a dojo. Book a class. If it's not the right fit, find another. Keep showing up. That's the secret: consistency. On this show, I talk a lot about accepting your cultural identity—learning to forgive your family, let go of resentment toward your mother culture, and finally accept yourself. But maybe I've been overthinking it. Maybe you just need to get your ass kicked… and then learn how to kick ass.Even if you're not into martial arts yet, it'll still help. You'll gain strength, confidence, discipline—and most importantly, you'll start respecting yourself. That's what I would've told my 15-year-old depressed, awkward, gooning, video game–addicted self. I'd throw him into a dojo and watch that flabby blob turn into a diamond stud. Now I'm 32. I'm in the best shape of my life. I go to the gym five days a week. I box. I just tried muay thai for the first time (shoutout to Byron). I'm a blue belt in Kyokushin karate with three years of training, and I wish I had started at 15. (Big shoutout to San Diego Kyokushin Karate and Sogyel Sensei—thank you!)Were you into Dragon Ball Z, Bruce Lee, Tekken, or Final Fantasy? I'm telling you: lean into your Main Character Syndrome. Become the hero of your own story. Martial arts will get you fit, teach you how to protect yourself, and give you the energy that says “I'm not someone to mess with.” You'll walk taller. You'll carry yourself with quiet, calm confidence. You won't be stuck in your head all the time. You'll be punching, kicking, sweating, growing. And yeah, if you're stronger and more confident, your dating life improves. If you're more disciplined, your work improves. Because how you do one thing is how you do everything.Martial arts makes you a better person. And if you're Asian, it connects you to a deep, ancient legacy. If you're not Asian, you're still joining a global tradition. The Ancestors will smile on you.Channel your pain—rage, sadness, neglect, confusion—into one clean punch of pure positive intent. A kamehameha wave from your soul. Change your life. Then change the world. Here's the twist: there is no solution to the identity struggle. Because it was never a problem. It only has power when you obsess over it. Once you move differently, live with strength and purpose, that struggle starts to fade. You've just proven to yourself that you're capable. That you can do pushups, throw a kick, protect your loved ones, and make a difference.Do it for 15-year-old you. Do it for your future self. Do it for the ones you love. Do it for your ancestors. Do it for love.Fantastic video if you want to get started in martial arts:DAY ONE | What I'd Do If I Was Starting From ScratchBruce Lee: Be like water (Inspirational)Support the show

It has been a whirlwind of a week for the games industry. Massive studio closures continue at a rapid pace and now we have Fable delay for the cherry on top! Where to begin? Well, for the Xbox faithful, let's sink into Fable first. It was given a 2025 release window at Xbox's 2024 Summer Showcase, but Playground Games has pulled the plug early on that happening. Announced by new head of Xbox Game Studios Craig Duncan, we also got a glimpse at some pre-alpha gameplay for Fable. The game looks great, at least visually, but has left many wondering what's taking so long? Rumors of this game started kicking around in 2018 only for the game to be fully announced in 2020. By summer 2026, we're looking at six full years of building this game up. So, what gives? Is it a PS5 port, the looming release of GTA VI, or something much deeper? The Dukes discuss in Cog's return! Naturally, we dive deep into the mismanagement of WB Games as we have for weeks. To put an exclamation point on things, they have shut down Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego. As their game's division continues its tailspin, the Dukes sift through the wreckage to see if there's any hope in saving what remains of WB Games. We also tackle the conversation around MUSE once more following new comments by Satya Nadella, how NetEase is hitting a speed bump despite the rocketing success of Marvel Rivals, and much more! Games is making big cuts, closing three studios — Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego — and cancelling its long-in-development Wonder Woman game, the publisher told employees on Tuesday. All projects from those studios have been canceled.
