This was considered the biggest bomb of all time but does it earn that honor? Find out as we take a look at the infamous Waterworld. Set in a world ruled by water, we follow the mariner played by Kevin Costner as he tries to navigate this frankly confusing world. With bonus Dennis Hopper!

In this episode of the show we are joined by Jak and Carson to celebrate the show's 250th episode. In this show we spare a few minutes reminiscing and we also engage in a brief game of Uncut Gems trivia before talking about the movie of the day, John Dahl's Red Rock West. In this part of our show we discuss the film's difficult fate, cult resurrection and universal critical acclaim. We talk about Dahl banking on a great story and the cast plucked out of David Lynch's closet, Nic Cage at his most subdued and nuanced and the unwieldy Dennis Hopper as the film's agent of chaos. We also talk about how noir films tend to emerge on the fringes of the mainstream, whether we admire Cage's skill of doing one-armed pushups and if Dahl's choice of aspect ratio is enough to send at least some of us into a tailspin.Tune in and enjoy!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsFeaturing: Jak-Luke Sharp & Carson TimarIntro: Infraction - CassetteOutro: Infraction - DaydreamHead over to uncutgemspodcast.com to find all of our archival episodes and more!Follow us on Twitter (@UncutGemsPod), IG (@UncutGemsPod) and Facebook (@UncutGemsPod)Buy us a coffee over at Ko-Fi.com (ko-fi.com/uncutgemspod)Subscribe to our Patreon! The fifth episode of our season on the awesome movie year of 1971 features the year's biggest flop, Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie. Directed and co-written by Dennis Hopper and starring Hopper, Stella Garcia, Don Gordon, Julie Adams and Tomas Milian, The Last Movie put Hopper's directorial career on hold for nearly a decade. The contemporary reviews quoted in this episode come from Roger Ebert (https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-last-movie--chinchero-1971), Vincent Canby in The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/1971/09/30/archives/screen-the-last-moviehopper-cast-as-a-mythic-film-cowboy-in-work-he.html), and Stefan Kanfer in Time magazine (https://time.com/archive/6843984/cinema-from-adolescent-to-puerile/).Check out more info and the entire archive of past episodes at https://www.awesomemovieyear.com and visit us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/awesomemovieyear You can find Jason on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JHarrisComedy/, on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jasonharriscomedy/ and on Letterboxd at https://letterboxd.com/goforjason/You can find Josh online at http://joshbellhateseverything.com/, on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/joshbellhateseverything/, on Bluesky at signalbleed.bsky.social and on Letterboxd at https://letterboxd.com/signalbleed/If you're a Letterboxd user and you watch any of the movies we talk about on the show, tag your review “Awesome Movie Year” to share your thoughts. You can find our producer David Rosen and his Piecing It Together Podcast at https://www.piecingpod.com, on Twitter at @piecingpod, on Bluesky at piecingpod.bsky.social and on Letterboxd at https://letterboxd.com/bydavidrosen/ Join the Popcorn & Puzzle Pieces Facebook group at
Hailing from the central coast of New South Wales, Australia, Ross Clarke-Jones joined the ASP world tour in 1986, at age 19. He was good in the small waves that the tour typically competed in at that time. But when the surf jacked up to 20-plus feet in the 1986 Billabong Pro at Waimea Bay, Clarke-Jones heaved himself over leadges and exited the water as one of the world's great big waves surfers—and has held that position ever since. He's been a major force in nearly every Eddie, winning that coveted event in 2001. He's paddled Jaws, towed Mavericks, Nazare, and Shipstern Bluff, and pioneered several mutant, way-out-to-sea slabs. He was the subject of the 2006 documentary titled The Sixth Element: The Ross Clarke Jones Story, narrated by the late Dennis Hopper. He and Tom Carroll starred in Storm Riders, a big-wave surfing reality show on the Discovery Channel, which led to Storm Riders 3D, a feature-length documentary. In this episode of Soundings, Clarke-Jones sits down with Jamie Brisick to talk about glory and catastrophe at Waimea Bay, manifestation, his lifelong relationship with Hawaii, racing sports cars, overcoming injury, maintaining motivation, dealing with fear, and the joys of small waves. Produced by Jonathan Shifflett. Music by PazKa (Aska Matsumiya & Paz Lenchantin).
to quote Charlotte Caffey and Kathy Valentine, I am certain there are moments “"head over heels, to time to think / Looks like the whole world's out of sync” resonates deeply with each and every one of you. And that's why I do this program each and every week, to try and help you make sense of the senseless. I'll admit that I've not done a particularly good job in the regard — I tend to get sidetracked with a particular musical theme and completely disregard whatever larger point I'd sought out to make, but that my friends, speaks to the power of music While this week's Ace Frehley tribute in hour #3 is only availalble to Patreon subscribers, the preceding two hours are, in my opinion the very pinnacle of my narrow-casting tenure.
The blood runs free as Justin Kerswell joins Joe, Rob and Bryce for our latest instalment of Creepy Spooky Month! Obnoxious expats, killer hippies (or are they angels?), and Dennis Hopper being a scumbag all feature in obscure genre art-piece, Bloodbath (a.k.a. The Sky is Falling) (1975), directed by Silvio Narizzano. And then we buckle in for a truly demented bit of late-cycle Italian horror, Sergio Bergonzelli's Blood Delirium (1988), in which John Phillip Law kills women so he can use their blood as paint in his horrible artworks, and Gordon Mitchell plays a butler with a penchant for rape, cannibalism and necrophilia - but apart from that, he's a model servant. It's not really possible to spoil Blood Delirium, but we will call out Spoiler Territory for Bloodbath. If you want to skip ahead from that point, you can rejoin the conversation at the 1:07:03 mark to avoid spoilers. Want to get in touch? This is an unusual version of the podcast. An old friend passed, someone I've known for 40 years, someone who was friends with our moderator Luana Anders on the Flipside, and by his own estimate was friends with 80% of our class on the flipside. Henry Jaglom was a Hollywood icon, known by everyone, knew everyone, used to hold the most attended New Year's Eve parties where I got to meet the cast of the Sopranos, met Ang Lee, Oscar winning actors, directors - Peter Bogdanovich, would run into my friend Carl Weathers and Sally Kellerman and her husband Jonathan Krane. It was always fun - and Orson was a born raconteur. He also didn't believe in the afterlife at all. He was adamant about it - and if the topic came up, would squint at me, wrinkle his brow, shake his head - just the way Luana's pal BJ Merholz does when the topic comes up. All I can say is Harry Dean Stanton was the King of Skeptics - and when we spoke to him on a number of occasions (and he proved beyond a shadow of doubt he still existed by giving me private health messages to friends of his at his memorial - who were flabbergasted to hear what Harry had to tell them as only he could have known those intimate details from the Afterlife.. Harry told us to tell people to "believe in the possibility of an afterlife so they don't waste another minute of their lives arguing about it like I did." As noted in the podcast, Jennifer was able to squeeze me in today when I told her a friend had passed, without telling her anything about it, and his friends had already reached out to me to ask some questions. So sincere best wishes to his family, to his kids, to his exwives, to all those who loved him and think this is an unusual way to pay our respects. Yes, I know that Orson Welles was upset that he caught Henry secretly taping him - I heard it from Orson's secretary at a party at Henry's house. She whispered to me that Orson felt so betrayed, "He never left his home again." I didn't have to tell Jennifer who I was asking about - she could see them. And to be clear - Jennifer is not a movie fan, she spends much of her day on criminal cases helping out various law enforcement agencies pro bono - I've interviewed some of those agents or detectives. She is interpreting what she gets - like when I asked her on BJ Merholz behalf - "who introduced him to Henry?" I thought it might be their mutual pal Jack Nicholson - but Jennifer got that it was a woman - and wasn't Luana (even though that makes sense) but really couldn't pin down who it was. Why? Who cares? She was aware of Bert Schneider without knowing who he was (or how his first name is spelled) and how he "left the planet too early." (How could she know?) Or that Dennis was Dennis Hopper, or that Orson was Orson Welles - she knew nothing, zero, zippo about Henry Jaglom and most people who knew Henry didn't know that much about him anyways. Finally it wasn't until I was listening to the podcast when I realize why Carl Weathers and Sally Kellerman were teasing him about "being in our class." I realized that they were referring to the fact that he was adamant about life going on - and I suspect those who knew this about Henry will continue to believe that is the case - but in doing this work with Jennifer EVERY WEEK for the past ten years, I can report we've had many skeptics, curmudgeons show up to talk to us about how surprised, gob smacked, shocked they were to realize that life goes on. Life goes on. Get over it. Thanks for tuning in.
Do we have a wild movie for you! Jodi Foster and Dennis Hopper in a Dennis Hopper movie about a woman being chased by a mobster who dresses like a vampire! Also this has the wildest cast you've ever seen! Check it out
This week, hosts Reggie Worth and Jason Jefferies discuss the new releases of 9/12 and 9/19/25, including albums by Wednesday, Scott Ballew, Nine Inch Nails and more! Also discussed are film scores and film soundtracks, and a couple of albums from earlier in the year that you might be sleeping on (SAYA by Saya Grey, and Life, Death and Dennis Hopper by The Waterboys). Happy listening!
This week, we cover one of the most ill-advised, weirdest adaptations of any kind: Super Mario Bros.! Released in 1993, this movie was a travesty of an adaptation of the NES Super Mario Bros games. Based on Super Mario World, having been recently released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the movie barely resembles the bright, colorful world that everyone knew with the original Super Mario Bros, released in 1985 on the NES. Brought to the screen by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Samantha Mathis, and Dennis Hopper.

This week, we close out our sequel season with The Crow: Wicked Prayer, starring John Connor cosplaying as Harry Potter cosplaying as Robert Smith if he were a Native American … or something. Rob watched every single crow sequel and reboot in preparation for this episode, and for the sole purpose of defending one of the best revenge thrillers of all time. We once covered the OG Crow movie during good movie week, and maybe Chris will finally come around and realize how it's a cinematic masterpiece, unlike Wicked Prayer which is just a fart in your gas pump. It's September, and to celebrate the fall season, we are doing a month of David Lynch movies. Lynch is criminally under represented in the Top 250, so we wanted to honor the legendary film maker with a run of some of his most acclaimed work. This week, we dive right in with Blue Velvet (1986). Let's go for a ride.
Romero never let the Dead rest, and neither do we. Come along as we discuss how Romero's Dead shuffled into the 21st century. We'll climb into the ivory tower of LAND OF THE DEAD, wrestle with the found-footage chaos of DIARY OF THE DEAD, and weigh the Western-styled grudges of SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD. These films gave us everything from Dennis Hopper's smug capitalist overlord to camcorder-wielding survivors obsessed with documentation, to families so divided they'd rather fight each other than the zombies at their door. While these entries are often debated among fans, they reveal Romero's persistence in pushing horror to say something bigger about society. Join us as we sift through what these films meant then - and what they say now. Get ready folks, it's about to get Spooky!
This week, Shat The Movies heads to small-town Indiana, where basketball is life, second chances are rare, and Dennis Hopper is cold, coach—real cold. Commissioned by fantasy football champion Stephen J., 1986's Hoosiers is one of the most celebrated underdog stories in sports cinema, often hailed as the “best basketball movie ever made.” But does it hold up nearly 40 years later? Gene and Big D debate whether Gene Hackman's Coach Norman Dale is a genius strategist or just a guy yelling “four passes!” while waiting for Jimmy Chitwood to show up. Along the way, we question the town's obsession with high school hoops, the authenticity of Dennis Hopper's Oscar-nominated portrayal of Shooter, and whether the film skips a pretty important historical context about race in 1950s basketball. Was Hoosiers a masterclass in sports nostalgia, or just a paint-by-numbers blueprint for every “inspirational coach” movie that followed? And more importantly, should Ollie have ever touched the ball? Send us a textEveryone loves Keanu, but none of you listened to us talk about him in this episode the first time, so we're trotting it out again. Maybe it was because we were only 10 episodes into our podcast career or, more likely, our enormous lack of talent that kept you all away. Either way; Who cares? In this glorious 90s action flick we are constantly reminded of how cool things used to be in the movie theater. Great stories, great acting, and no unnecessary CGI. Keanu and Sandy are cute as bugs and the ever whacked out Dennis Hopper keeps the joint hoppin for the entire two hrs. Pop Quiz, hot shot. How do make an awesome action movie? Listen in to find out.

On this week's show, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run, spend quality time with new records from Superchunk and Charley Crockett and spin fresh tracks from Ivy, The Last Dinner Party and Margo Price. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.

Julian, Madeline, and Emilio begin a new episode cycle focusing on Audience Interrogation in film with a "View-nanimous" discussion on David Lynch's 1986 masterpiece "Blue Velvet," and are joined by returning guest, multi-talented musician and fellow Lynch fan Lily Desmond for the conversation. Marking their long-awaited first episode on a Lynch film, the group discuss their formative past experiences with "Blue Velvet" and its undeniable staying power, on account of its simultaneous adherence to and divergence from narrative conventions. As the film famously polarized critics upon release, the group also discuss the surprising watchability of its most unsettling scenes, along with distinctly "American" sensibilities tapped into by Lynch and other offbeat filmmakers of his generation, and the desires which underly the dually transparent and enigmatic actions of the film's main characters, Jeffrey, Dorothy, Frank, and Sandy. On this week's show, we send get well wishes to Dave Edmunds, pour one out for the late Terry Reid, and spend quality time with new records from Wet Leg, Ben Nichols, Lord Huron and J. Isaiah Evans & The Boss Tweed. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.
This week the boys are on thin ice – Moleman is back and thinking about evicting them. Can they win him over and convince him to stick around for a movie night featuring one of his favorite directors?Join the gang as they peel back the pastel-painted layers of suburban America's seedy underbelly in Blue Velvet. Do the chicken walk with Kyle MacLachlan, debate whether Curious George has a tail, and find out what Werner Herzog eats for breakfast.Stick around for plenty of gushing over David Lynch's twisted classic, because in Lumberton… it really is a strange world.Leave us a 30 second voicemail and if we like it we'll play it on the show: (949) 4-STABBY (949-478-2229)Next movie announced every Wednesday. This week we're excited to present a conversation with cinematographer Fred Murphy as he discusses Hoosiers. Hoosiers played as part of our recently concluded retrospective celebrating the career of the late, great Gene Hackman. This conversation was moderated by FLC Senior Programmer Tyler WIlson. Few sports films land with the clarity, grit, and emotional lift of Hoosiers. Gene Hackman brings flinty, lived-in authority to Norman Dale, a disgraced coach seeking a second act in 1950s Indiana, where basketball is practically a religion. Directed with unflashy conviction by David Anspaugh and shot in real Hoosier gyms, this underdog story favors restraint over bombast, with Jerry Goldsmith's elegiac score and a quietly shattering turn by Dennis Hopper as a washed-up assistant adding unexpected weight. At its core is one of Hackman's most cherished performances—contained, weathered, and quietly magnetic—in a film that's less about victory than the long, uncertain work of earning it.
Steve & Izzy continue 2025 the Year of the Apocalypse celebrating movies after the fall of man... but due a last minute rescheduling, it's also Nic-August Cage a few days early as they are joined by Ryan McDonald of New Ogden Cinema to discuss 1993's "Red Rock West" starring Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, JT Walsh, Laura Flynn Boyle & more!!! Mike speaks with co-director Fax Bahr and archivist James Mockoski about the stunning new 4K restoration of Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991), the definitive behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling the infamously turbulent production of Apocalypse Now. What began as a Vietnam War epic in the Philippines became one of the most harrowing shoots in cinematic history—captured on 16mm by Eleanor Coppola and transformed into a raw, revelatory portrait by Bahr and co-director George Hickenlooper. Bahr discusses the collaborative assembly of Eleanor's intimate footage, audio diaries, and newly recorded interviews with stars like Martin Sheen and Dennis Hopper.Meanwhile, Mockoski details how American Zoetrope restored the film from the original elements for the first time, regrading in 4K, restoring the original 2.39:1 aspect ratio, and remixing the sound in 5.1. With the full blessing of Francis Ford Coppola, this restoration brings fresh clarity and depth to a film that remains a blistering, essential look at artistic obsession, collapse, and endurance.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

Robin Green is an American writer who has been dizzyingly successful, but she describes herself as a 'clueless girl'. At times, she didn't even realise she could actually write. In the early 1970s when Robin was in her 20s, she had an interview with Rolling Stone magazine's creator and editor Jann Wenner. She initially thought it was for a secretarial role, but instead, he hired her as a writer - and the only woman on the editorial masthead. What followed were Robin's raucous, wild, rock 'n' roll years. She interviewed the likes of David Cassidy, Dennis Hopper and Bobby Kennedy Jr, who she recalls sleeping with on his dorm-room water-bed. After failing to produce a story on him, her time at Rolling Stone ended and Robin began to question her future. It was then that she met the love of her life, an aspiring writer called Mitch. But their relationship fell apart and she spent a decade going from one thing to another.Nearing 40, Robin had an epiphany while watching daytime television and her career as a writer took a dramatic turn. She picked up her pen, and with Mitch, they began writing for the TV show Northern Exposure. They became extraordinarily successful writing partners, winning multiple Emmys, including for their work on The Sopranos - where, once again, Robin was the only woman in the room for most of her time there. When Robin was almost 60, Mitch proposed and now married, they created their own hit show - Blue Bloods.Robin has written a memoir, The Only Girl: My Life and Times on the Masthead of Rolling Stone.Presenter: Asya Fouks Producer: Sarah KendalLives Less Ordinary is a podcast from the BBC World Service that brings you the most incredible true stories from around the world. "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmakers Apocalypse" (1991), the award-winning documentary chronicling the tumultuous making of Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" recently had a theatrical run at New York's Film Forum in a new 4K restoration. In the late 1970s, director Francis Ford Coppola, accompanied by his family and cast and crew, travelled to the Philippines to begin work on what would become "Apocalypse Now". But it soon became one of the most notorious shoots in cinema history, spiraling into a hellish, life-threatening nightmare. Chronicling the drama was Coppola's wife, the late Eleanor Coppola, who shot extensive behind-the-scenes footage of the shoot in 16mm, and recorded audio interviews with her husband and others involved in the movie's making. In the early '90s, Eleanor turned her 16mm footage and audio interviews over to filmmakers George Hickenlooper and podcast guest Fax Bahr, who then interwove it with new interviews with the movie's cast members (including Martin Sheen and Dennis Hopper) and observers (like George Lucas). After a year of editing, the new documentary debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. Says Filmwax Radio guest James Mockoski, Film Archivist and Restoration Supervisor at American Zoetrope, "For the past 30 years, Eleanor's 16mm behind-the-scenes footage has been three to four generations removed from the original elements. For this new release and restoration of the documentary, Francis decided to scan the original sources in 4K. The extensive excerpts from the feature are now presented in their original 2.39:1 aspect ratio, rather than being letterboxed into a 4x3 frame." "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmakers Apocalypse" has been restored by American Zoetrope from the original negative, with a re-mixed 5.1 soundtrack. Co-director Fax Bahr approved the grading, with the final seal of approval given by Francis Ford Coppola. Grading carried out at Roundabout Entertainment, Burbank, California.
Today on part one of the latest episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast we are speaking with musician, producer, entrepreneur and much more Peter Rafelson. Son of director and producer Bob Rafelson & production designer Toby Carr, Peter spent this episode really digging deep and getting into some intense as well as humorous stuff about growing up the son of an easy rider. Or is that a member of The Monkees? No matter. We get into it all and then some on this episode. Fans of the sixties and seventies counterculture will know the work of Bob Rafelson for his associations with very specific touchstones of American film and television thar forever changed the course of the entertainment industry. From The Monkees to Easy Rider, from Five Easy Pieces to The Last Picture Show, Bob Rafelson along with partners Bert Schneider & Steve Blauner ushered in a new wave of independent film in Hollywood that smashed convention as well as the studio system. Along with writer, star and co-hort Jack Nicholson, Bob Rafelson directed films like The King of Marvin Gardens, Stay Hungry, The Postman Always Rings Twice and many more. Bob Rafelson was in the epicenter of films that brought an independent streak to a staid industry and never looked back. Our conversation with Peter centered around the growing up too fast where he learned about drugs, revolution and the FBI is one for the ages. Along the way we talk about Madonna, Abbie Hoffman, The Black Panthers, Dennis Hopper, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sally Field, how he ended up with the Monkees instruments in his bedroom and the death of his sister under troubling circumstances. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you part one of the latest episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast with guest, Peter Rafelson. Take a listen.

Alicia has perhaps the spiderwebby-est story she's ever told, with the 1960s marriage and divorce of actors Brooke Hayward and Dennis Hopper. They were together through the decade and became a central part of the scene - art, politics, music - but the highly combustible nature of their marriage meant it could not last. In the 1960s, Natalie Wood was one of the world's leading actress, her star shining as bright as Elizabeth Taylor's. She'd been acting since she was a small child, appearing in movies like Miracle on 34th Street. She'd starred opposite James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, and she'd been linked romantically to Warren Beatty, Michael Caine, Elvis Presley, and Dennis Hopper. And her husband, actor Robert Wagner, may have gotten away with killing her off of Catalina Island in 1981, during a weekend getaway the couple shared with none other than Christoper Walken.
