In the 1960s, Natalie Wood was one of the world's leading actress, her star shining as bright as Elizabeth Taylor's. She'd been acting since she was a small child, appearing in movies like Miracle on 34th Street. She'd starred opposite James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, and she'd been linked romantically to Warren Beatty, Michael Caine, Elvis Presley, and Dennis Hopper. And her husband, actor Robert Wagner, may have gotten away with killing her off of Catalina Island in 1981, during a weekend getaway the couple shared with none other than Christoper Walken. Back when we reviewed "Throb" last year, Greg and Chico were reminded of this movie a pre-Fast and the Furious Paul Walker did back in 1998. Two loser surf brothers from Hawaii are sent by their father to Yellowstone, where they are mistaken for park rangers and have to do battle with a paranoid Dennis Hopper doing weird Dennis Hopper things. We probably think this is the first time in Disney+ history that more than one person watched this movie at one time.

Today, the Spotlight shines On Mike Scott, founder of The Waterboys. In 2014, Mike stumbled upon Dennis Hopper's photography in a London gallery and fell into a rabbit hole that led to Life, Death and Dennis Hopper, a bold concept album that tells the story of the Easy Rider star from childhood to beyond the grave. It's a sonic movie with guest turns from Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple, and Steve Earle that chronicles not just Hopper's journey but the cultural shifts he witnessed and helped create. This marks a new peak in Mike's ever-changing four-decade career with The Waterboys, from their ‘Big Music' beginnings to Celtic folk explorations and genre-blending surprises to come.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from The Waterboys' album Life, Death and Dennis Hopper)–Dig DeeperVisit Mike Scott and The Waterboys at mikescottwaterboys.comPurchase The Waterboys' Life, Death and Dennis Hopper from Sun Records or Qobuz and listen on your streaming platform of choiceFollow The Waterboys on Patreon, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTubeDennis Hopper's Lost Album: life both sides of the lensThe Last Movie: Dennis Hopper's Curiously Frustrating ExperimentDig into this episode's complete show notes at spotlightonpodcast.com–• Did you enjoy this episode? Look at where our tenacity and dedication have gotten us. All the way to episode 100! It is true what they say: if you stick at something long enough in a sequential order, you will eventually reach EPISODE 100. Don't quote me, but I think Mark Maron said that. But what an episode 100 this is. We look at the seminal work of a visionary, David Lynch, who passed away earlier this year. Starring Kyle McLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Laura Dern, Dean Stockwell, and Dennis Hopper, this is the story about finding an ear and figuring out who it belongs to. And Frank, obviously. Beautiful, disgusting, violent Frank. Little did Laura and Ryan know that we recite Frank's lines more often than not in everyday life, which is probably why people may perceive our relationship as far from golden. But that's your fault; you have no sense of humor. Just shut up and listen to our podcast!
In this episode, we dive into 'Colors' (1988), Dennis Hopper's gritty and controversial look at gang violence in Los Angeles. Starring Robert Duvall and Sean Penn as two LAPD officers caught between community tensions and their own clashing ideologies, the film sparked debate upon release for its raw portrayal of gang life. Listen as we explore its legacy, impact, where it falls in the landscape of late '80s crime dramas, and just how dated the film has become.Send us a textThank you for listening! Dennis Hopper revolutionized American cinema by bringing the counterculture to the mainstream with his 1969 film Easy Rider. But he also lived his life in tandem with his art, on the fringes of society and sanity. His stubborn attitude and crazy ideas quickly transformed him from a hippie prophet into a longhaired loser. Hopper's journey from success to failure and back again took him through jungles, deserts, and mountains, and involved varying degrees of drugs, guns, hallucinations, and ex-wives – all part of a lifelong search to save his career, and his life. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including domestic violence. Lisa Law's still, movie and video images have chronicled decades of social and cultural changes in America. And her film, ‘Flashing On The Sixties,' was described by actor-director Dennis Hopper as “the most compelling, moving documentary of the Sixties”. In 1966, Lisa and her husband resided in the renowned "Castle" in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, a hub that welcomed numerous prominent musicians, including Bob Dylan. She shares stories from Dylan's stay and offers her perspective on the recent film, A Complete Unknown. Lisa was also part of the Hog Farm commune, and they were tasked with keeping the peace at Woodstock ‘69. Yet, her efforts at the festival were integral to its success - from managing the trip tents to mobilizing members of the Hog Farm and other festival goers so that they were able to feed over 200,000 people! She also played a role in the organization of Woodstock '99, and was featured in the recent Netflix documentary, "Trainwreck: Woodstock '99." In our discussion, we explore the stark contrasts between the two festivals and how insights from '69 might have prevented the latter's challenges. Lisa was there for all the seminal pop culture moments of the 1960s, capturing them with her beautiful photos. And she's one of the very few people that can say she's been to all 3 Woodstock festivals! For more information on Lisa, her photos, as well as her book and film of the same name, 'Flashing on the Sixties,' take a look at her website: https://www.flashingonthesixties.com Learn more about your ad choices. With the unfortunate passing of David Lynch, the Four Play hosts decided to dedicate this arc to the director and his unique vision in cinema. The 1986 film Blue Velvet still stands as an all-time classic with memorable performances by Dennis Hopper and Isabella Rossellini and a signature touch of Lynch's surrealism. The film mixes Lynch's love of Americana with a shocking exploration of sexual violence and the dark activities of the criminal underworld.

Hopper's journey from success to failure and back again took him through jungles, deserts, and mountains, and involved varying degrees of drugs, guns, hallucinations, and ex-wives - all part of a lifelong search to save his career, and his life. This episode contains content that may me disturbing to some listeners, including domestic violence. Dennis Hopper brought a rock 'n' roll sensibility to filmmaking. In this episode we delve into one of the signature commercial and critical flops of New Hollywood: Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie. This gorgeous yet impenetrable film was a crucial turning point bridging the early hippie-influenced films of the late 60s with the more cynical and popular mainstream cinema that came to define the 1970s. We are joined by Stephen Lee Naish, author of two different books discussing this week's subject - Create or Die: Essays on the Films of Dennis Hopper, and Music and Sound in the Films of Dennis Hopper. So enjoy listening to someone actually qualified to talk about this stuff for a change! Topics include: American New Wave vs. New Hollywood, Jorge Luis Borges, and Charles Manson.
Blue Velvet established the late great David Lynch as auniquely singular voice in Hollywood, tackling themes rarely seen in mainstream cinema. Zo goes on an ocean cruise. The voyage turns out to be longer than he expected. In fact, he finds out that he's at a time and place where this particular sea voyage will come to an end sometime in the middle of Neveruary. Being on a permanent tour on the ocean has it's perks, like, being so adjusted to boating life that one never gets sea sick. Then there are the downsides like constantly being harassed by pirates, being cheated by men drifting in the open ocean, horrifying mutated sea monsters, and never seeing the site of dry land again. Zo had heard a lot of strange tales while on this trip such as the story of The Mariner who had gills behind his ears so that he could breath underwater and that he was traveling with a woman and a special child who had a tattoo of where dry land could be found. On the one hand, Zo is tempted to find this Mariner and follow him and his companions to there destination. On the other hand, Zo had heard that this Mariner is being hounded by a group of ornery Smokers. Ain't nobody got time to be dealin' with no Smokers, man! Might as well sit back, relax and enjoy the Waterworld.
