Peter shares behind-the-scenes stories about Fonda, Hopper, and the legendary motorcycles featured in the film. The hour closes with deeper reflections on Eisenhower's leadership, the burden of wartime decisions, the changing nature of journalism, and the lessons modern America can still learn from the Greatest Generation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Leatherface is back, Chop Top won't shut up, Dennis Hopper has two chainsaws, and somehow The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is celebrating 40 years of pure horror-comedy chaos. In this episode of Straitjacket Talk, we dive into Tobe Hooper's wild 1986 sequel and ask the big questions: Is this a misunderstood cult classic? Is Chop Top hilarious or unbearable? Did Leatherface get neutered by love? And why is Lefty just chainsawing random wood for half the movie?Join us for a long-form horror movie review full of gore, laughs, arguments, killer quotes, and one very deep hatred of Chop Top.

It's da Mario Brothers in their live action debut! This famous turkey, with an all-star cast including Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper turkey is often called one of the worst movies of all time -- but is it actually bad? We posit that, in fact, it's good. Also, wow, that whole King Koopa thing really hits different in the reign of Trump. This ain't no game!

This week, Patreon supporter Matt Bates, the Black Country Vlogger, brings us Innocent Blood (1992) for our Pain and Pleasure theme -- a film that revels in the push and pull between the two. Innocent Blood (1992) came about in a roundabout way, which is fitting for a film that defies easy categorisation. John Landis had originally been developing a vampire project called Red Sleep -- a wild premise about Las Vegas being run by vampires -- before Warner Bros. passed and handed him a first-time script by Michael Wolk. The film had an entirely different trajectory before Landis came aboard -- Jack Sholder had been set to direct with Lara Flynn Boyle and Dennis Hopper in the leads before creative differences saw all three replaced. Landis cast French actress Anne Parillaud fresh off La Femme Nikita, and filmed primarily in Pittsburgh's Little Italy neighbourhood after a location visit changed his original plan to shoot in Philadelphia. The MPAA initially slapped it with an NC-17, forcing further cuts to secure an R rating. Landis described his vision as "a Hammer film directed by Scorsese." It opened in September 1992 to a modest domestic gross but has since built a devoted cult following among fans of horror-comedy and 90s vampire films.Find Matt here - https://www.youtube.com/c/blackcountryvloggerTRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISIn a world where the streets of Pittsburgh run red... one woman has a code. Kicking off our season on videogame adaptation we've got the notoriously awful Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993. Yes, the one that doesn't look anything like the Mario games and instead feels like if Blade Runner had dinosaurs and was directed by an idiot (or two idiots as it turns out).It does star Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper though, and despite the critical and commercial failure is still a film remembered fondly by many. How will it fare in the Redshirt opinion cauldron? Listen on to find out! Here's how our schedule is shaping up for the next month:- Super Mario Bros. Roger Corman was born 100 years ago this month so to celebrate his centennial and 420, Greg and Bob pair pot with GAS-S-S-S (1970), Corman's hippy-dippy post-apocalyptic stoner comedy. It's definitely one of Roger's stoniest movies, if not quite his best. A doddering US senator unwittingly releases a bio-weapon that kills everyone over 25. With that premise, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern and Dennis Hopper had aged out so we get Bud Cort (RIP), Cindy Williams, Ben Vereen (who is on fire in this), and Talia Shire (then billed as Tally Coppola). They're like the Muppet Babies of AIP druggie flicks. With dirty psychedelic rock by Country Joe (RIP) and the Fish--the second film on this podcast to feature them and their music. Barry "The Fish" Melton kicks ass. Bob also talks about seeing the 4K restoration of Micheal Mann's THEIF (1981) at the Roxie in SF with the sound cranked way up. It's a good thing. And Greg gives us an update on his record room + why do people watch podcasts with aging men sitting around in shorts? What's the appeal? Hell if we know. Hosts: Greg Franklin and Bob Calhoun. Philena Franklin and Cory Sklar are on assignment. NEXT EPISODE: Cory's Punk Rock and Shock Til You Drop with LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982) and FORBIDDEN ZONE (1980) featuring special guest star writer, producer and movie geek extraordinaire Marc Edward Heuck. Kevin Costner spent $200 million making a Mad Max ripoff on the open ocean — and the man has gills behind his ears. That's right. Waterworld's hero is a merman. A gill-having, web-toed, pee-drinking merman. And Cinema Psychos is here to ask the only question that matters: Really That Awful? Brian and John go full deep dive on Waterworld (1995), one of Hollywood's most notorious production disasters and one of the most divisive bad movies of the 1990s. They cover everything: why shooting on open ocean is genuinely suicidal for a film budget, how Kevin Costner fired his own director mid-edit and took over post-production himself, why Dennis Hopper is the only person on screen who clearly knows what kind of movie he's in, and how a world where the polar ice caps have entirely melted somehow still has a drinking water shortage. There are plot holes deep enough to lose a submarine in. There are action scenes with the energy of a kid smashing action figures together with no plan. There is a bungee cord rescue sequence that defies physics, logic, and basic narrative structure and secretly rules. And there is one man. Part human. Part fish. All Kevin Costner. Devin & James are back in the DEN OF CIN with a tribute to actor/writer/director ROBERT DUVALL! Few other artists have had such a long lasting impact on the art form as Duvall, with parts in many of the most important movies ever made, in both supporting and lead roles. We start off with a list of the expected must-see classics, such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, M*A*S*H, and Network (to name just a few), but we deep dive into a selection of Duvall films that tend to get less attention in the modern era than the typical "greatest hits" of his filmography. We start with a look into his supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola's THE RAIN PEOPLE, and then dive into long form conversations about his many starring roles, including the criminally underseen THE OUTFIT, his Oscar winning country music masterpiece TENDER MERCIES, family drama THE GREAT SANTINI, Dennis Hopper's still controversial COLORS with Sean Penn, the self-written & directed THE APOSTLE, and the 21st century western OPEN RANGE. Along the way, we get into side conversations about THX-1138, TOMORROW, THE STONE BOY, FALLING DOWN, JOE KIDD, TRUE CONFESSIONS, and THE JUDGE, as well as probably the weirdest, most random cameo of all time in the remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Join us for all of these, and even a few more, as we celebrate over 60 years of cinema with Robert Duvall!

Straight out of the Necro Phone Recommendations, we dig into OUT OF THE BLUE, a heavy, bleak film directed by Dennis Hopper from 1980. Critically acclaimed, but controversial due to it's frankness with regard to sensitive topics such as drug abuse and incest, the film garnered a cult following and was released on a deluxe, special edition by Severin in 2023. Intro: “Necromaniacs” – Mike Hill Outro: “Hey, Hey, My, My (Out of the Blue)” – Neil Young and Crazy Horse

EDtv opened in third place on March 26th right behind our last movie, Analyze This in 2nd and Forces of Nature in 1st, going on to gross $35 million worldwide on a budget of $80 million. Directed by Ron Howard, it is a remake of the 1994 Quebecois film Louis 19, King of the Airwaves, with a script adapted by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, it stars Matthew McConaughey, Jenna Elfman, Woody Harrelson, Ellen DeGeneres, Sally Kirkland, a frankly Oscar-worthy Martin Landau, Rob Reiner, Dennis Hopper, Elizabeth Hurley, Harry Shearer, Ian Gomez, Rupaul, Michael Moore, Jay Leno, George Plimpton, and Bill Maher. EDtv tells the story of a regular guy whose life becomes a 24-hour reality show. It did modestly well with critics, but it was drowned out by 1998's similarly-premised (but in no way similar) The Truman Show. Anyway, since it's the only 1999 movie to feature Bill Maher, we invited the host of the I Hate Bill Maher Podcast, comedian Will Weldon, to talk about this incredibly confused, frustrating movie, which remains notable for being the start of the McConaughey-Harrelson (possibly literal) Bromance! Will's on Bluesky and other social media @oldmanweldon

Welcome back to Myopia Movies, where we revisit the films of our youth and ask the important question: Were these movies actually good… or were we just children? And today—Oh boy. In honor of the release of Super Mario Galaxy, today we are revisiting Super Mario Bros. from 1993. A film that answers the question no one asked: “What if a beloved Nintendo property… was filtered through cyberpunk dystopia, industrial sludge, and Goombas that look like they escaped a low-budget episode of Doctor Who?” How will Super Mario Brothers (1993) hold up? Host: Nic Panel: Matthew, Keiko, Alex Directed by: Rocky Morton & Annabel Jankel Starring: Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Samantha Mathis, Fisher Stevens, Richard Edson
Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode swap film reels for fishing reels, to ponder why fishing onscreen has got us hooked. The net is cast wide to consider everything from industrial scale fleets showcased in films like The Perfect Storm and long running series, Deadliest Catch, to more leisurely endeavours like The River Runs Through It, and the BBC's Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. With guests, Mark Jenkin, John Lurie and Gagga Jónsdóttir.Mark speaks to Cornish film director Mark Jenkin about why fishing has continued to have such a strong presence in his films, and how the industry has often been romanticised onscreen. Jenkins 2019 feature debut Bait dramatised clashes between tourists and locals in a once flourishing fishing village, and in his newest film, Rose of Nevada, a fishing vessel lost for 30 years mysteriously reappears in a derelict harbour. The actor, painter and frequent Jim Jarmusch collaborator, John Lurie, shares with Ellen how his 90s cult TV show, Fishing With John, hauled away the conventions of late night cable fishing shows, and what it was like onboard with the actors, Dennis Hopper and Willem Defoe. Ellen also talks to the Icelandic writer-director, Gagga Jónsdóttir, about her documentary, Strengur, and some of her unexpected cinematic sources of inspiration. The film follows the journey of four teenage girls challenging traditional gender roles on the River Laxá, as seventh generation angling guides. This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Doug back on the show as they discuss the 1986 sports classic Hoosiers. In this basketball drama, Lex Luthor takes on the task of coaching a bunch of farm boys to the state championship. Dennis Hopper plays his typically great washed up drunk. And for some reason Barbara Hershey is along for the ride. This movie is always mentioned as one of the best sports movies of all time. Does the Exciting & New crew agree? Listen to the podcast and find out.Jason, Andy and Dana will discuss a 1986 movie weekly, breaking down all the nonsense there within. The 3 hosts all work together and everyone else around them was getting really annoyed at all the movie talk, so they decided to annoy the world in podcast form.Check out previous seasons to hear them discuss 1982, 1983, 1984 & 1985 movies, as well as a full season of Love Boat episodes (if that is your thing). This week, we review Super Mario Bros. (1993), Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel's wildly offbeat sci-fi adventure based (very loosely) on the beloved Nintendo video game. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo star as Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi, who find themselves pulled into a dystopian alternate dimension ruled by the villainous King Koopa, played with lizardy menace by Dennis Hopper. With de-evolution guns, fungus-based tech, and a plot that veers as far from the Mushroom Kingdom as possible, this film reimagines the game's bright, bouncy world into a gritty cyberpunk nightmare. Is plumbing the multiverse a pipe dream or just a clogged mess? Dennis Hopper revolutionized American cinema by bringing the counterculture to the mainstream with his 1969 film Easy Rider. But he also lived his life in tandem with his art, on the fringes of society and sanity. His stubborn attitude and crazy ideas quickly transformed him from a hippie prophet into a longhaired loser. Hopper's journey from success to failure and back again took him through jungles, deserts, and mountains, and involved varying degrees of drugs, guns, hallucinations, and ex-wives – all part of a lifelong search to save his career, and his life. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including domestic violence. Movies open a window into our collective soul. In Screen Captures: Film in the Age of Emergency (Lever Press, 2026), Stephen Lee Naish guides us through recent cinematic phenomena that reflect/refract our contemporary political existence. Stephen Lee Naish is a writer, independent researcher, and cultural critic. He is the author of several books on film, politics, music, and pop culture. He lives in Kingston, Ontario. He has appeared on the New Books Network three times for previous books: Create of Die: Essays on the Artistry of Dennis Hopper (2016), Deconstructing Dirty Dancing (2017), Riffs and Meaning (2018) From Star Wars-scope blockbusters and Hollywood coming-of-age comedies to independent horror productions, Naish draws out the ways these movies shape, and are shaped by, their audience's own dissatisfactions. In his discussion of the Star Wars franchise, Naish highlights a conflict between internet discussion-fueled fandom vs the Disney Empire that shares features with the ongoing rebellions depicted in the films themselves. A passionate fan base who can now voice their discontent via the internet is feeding back into the studio's agenda and criticizing the actions of characters within the film and the actors alike. Chapters on the super-heroes genre and disaster movies draw out the climate-based social tensions these reflect. Depictions of masculinity ("Men on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown") on screens large and small bleed into discussions of the work and presence of Nicholas Cage, David Lynch, and Dennis Hopper -- with a side-excursion into Valerie Solanas's strikingly prescient SCUM Manifesto. Stephen Lee Naish's Screen Captures adds a sharpening filter to the film-goer's experience on the big and little screen.
