For many outside the fish keeping hobby it's perceived as a glass box in the corner generally with all the classic hallmarks of a stereotypical fish tank with plastic plants, colour gravel and probably stocked with your typical oversized goldfish in comparison to the volume of water it's in. As we approach the end of the year, the hobby tends to get more popular whilst we spend more time in our homes and the nights close in. For some this time of year is re-igniting that love or at last getting round to buying that fish tank you always wanted or trying something new. For some, myself included it's the time of year I get out of the house and find my local woodland and become a bit more closer to nature. Since the beginning of 2022 I've been going through mixed emotions when it comes to the fish keeping hobby itself. I love the hobby and enjoy keeping fish, the benefits are massive and they give me that focus when I've had a tough day or the enjoyment of caring for the animals I keep. Let take you back a few months ago now to a moment in which I saw someone posting on social media panicking because her fish had spawned 25 fry and wanted desperately to get rid of them as she didn't have the space in her aquarium. A while back I was looking through my social media pages and couldn't help noticing a trend with these absolutely stunning aquariums that there is this desire to pull them apart after only a few months of being setup. What's up everyone, James here and welcome back to another episode of “The Aquarium Podcast” When we look out our windows, go for a walk in the woods we see the vast and vibrant world of nature, colours we perceive of the green grass or blue waters are photons travelling millions of miles from the sun, hitting these objects and bouncing back into our eyes. Our moods often reflect the colours we see and being outside we feel one with nature. Today I wanted to talk about those tiny creatures we often keep in our aquarium, the workforce of any successful ecosystem and in my view an essential part of any clean up crew no matter the aquarium, the snail! What's up everyone, James here and welcome back to another episode of The Aquarium Podcast. A few weeks ago I watched on a local news channel here in the UK a segment about how unethical it is to keep fish in aquariums and the suggestion from the article was that we should be re-releasing animals in fish tanks or public aquariums back into the wild. It sort of made me wonder what they was smoking when this suggestion was thought of as to many including myself this seems like an absolutely dumb idea. What's up everyone, James here and welcome back to another episode of The Aquarium Podcast. Today I wanted to delve into the topic of water chemistry, it's always been a bug bear of mine on what “Should” be when it comes to water conditions for our fish and I feel just as confused now as I did when I first started, why? Well ultimately because the information is so mixed yet everyone seems sure that what we see today with water parameters is law. What's up everyone, James here and welcome back to another episode of The Aquarium Podcast. From the beautiful clear tropical oceans of the indo-pacific and quite possibly one of the most polarising fish within the aquarium hobby today, it's fair to say the clownfish is one we all admire to keep or loathe because of it's commercial success, it has a fascinating story, a variety of patterns, colours and has an amazing symbiotic chemistry with anemones. So lets take a dive today on the fascinating history of this popular marine fish. What's up everyone, James here and welcome back to another episode of The Aquarium Podcast. Today I wanted to take a look at the fascinating world of fish created in some way within the hobby. So what do we mean by that, well essentially what we are talking about today is fish which have been created within the hobby more for ornamental purposes such as selective breeding or genetically engineered to enhance colours. What's up everyone, James here and welcome back to another episode of The Aquarium Podcast. Today I wanted to talk a bit about brands within the hobby, there are literally hundreds of different companies all around the world and in our stores for almost anything our hearts require in terms of fish, but ultimately which ones are good and what are well…a bit pants? Welcome back to a brand new Season of the Aquarium Podcast. "Let's kick things off today with an interesting topic of conversation I overheard recently: “Is it wrong to bash staff at a fish shop” It's an interesting one I think as to why anyone would do this especially in a civilised society. What's up everyone, James here and welcome to another episode of the aquarium podcast. A common question I always seen floating around the online world is “what is the best beginner fish” for an aquarium and I find it's always met with interesting answers from all walks of life and experience. It got me thinking about this question quite a lot and taking some time to sit down and think about the question I think it's fair to say that searching online can give you mixed opinions too. What's up everyone and welcome back to another episode of the aquarium podcast. As we draw to a close on what has been almost a whole year now since the widespread lockdown's of COVID-19 I thought it would be interesting to reflect on some of the impacts the virus has had within the hobby, not only for ourselves personally but the environmental and economic impact that it's had. What's up everyone, James here and welcome to another episode of the aquarium podcast. Today I thought it only seemed right after a few episodes back talking about Goldfish, that I touch on yet another fish which has a fascinating story of it's own, the betta or “Baytah” if you live in the USA. I've briefly touched on this fish a few times within this podcast and on occasion on Youtube but wanted to delve a little deeper into the fish itself and why it's become one of the hobby's most popular and controversial animals today. What's up everyone, James here and welcome to another episode of the aquarium podcast. In this episode I just wanted to relive a memory from about 10 years ago when I visited some countries around the Pacific Ocean and how amazing and awe inspiring it really was. I've always enjoyed exploring the world and in my younger years was fortunate enough to travel around the world on a “Gap Year” so to speak in which, the journey took me to two amazing counties, specifically were many of the saltwater or “Marine” fish we get to enjoy today in our aquariums originate from, namely Fiji and Australia. These countries are more than famous for their vibrant fishes and coral reefs and some of the most visually and spectacular places to experience underwater. Today I want to talk about a fish that most of us probably owned at the very beginning of our adventures in aquarium keeping. The goldfish. Probably to many, the one fish that unfortunately has been so mistreated in its long history. From scientific testing to spending it's day's waiting to be won at a funfair, this fish has certainly been through the works but why and how come? Where did it all begin? If you want to help support my channel/brand/mission then consider becoming a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mrbrightfryed Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCU5VAc5XvyRK_KgRy_1jUvw Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mr_brightfryed/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/brightfryed Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mrbrightfryed
Today I want to talk about the relationship between aquariums and our mental wellbeing. Did you know for instance that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England. Additionally, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (like anxiety and depression) in any given week in England. Those are some scary numbers, it's always been known to us that there is a special relationship here with our health and the fish keeping hobby. But what exactly is it? Do you ever stop in this hobby and think, how the hell did we get to this point? Well it happened to me recently, I noticed when browsing online at aquariums (as you do) that so many designs these days especially the display ones on the boxes are shown full of colour gravel and fake plants, it really dawned on me how far away the industry has gotten from where it started…..This led me down the rabbit hole to think, actually how did the hobby all begin and how long ago? Today is a thought provoking one really on the journey insane of our fish and how resilient they really are. It's funny but up until a few months back I never really spent the time to sit back and really think about where in fact all my fish came from and how in part the amount of stress that is placed upon these tiny animals. We're going to jump right in with today's topic which has been a real focus of mine since starting this podcast and my other social platforms which is being more honest and transparent within the hobby. I've been posting a lot of videos and content throughout my social media platforms for a while now attempting to break the chains on how fabricated a lot of the stuff we see online is. More often than not you will tend to find many people posting content which promotes the good things that are happening in their aquariums. This could be the new light they've just purchased which is going to enhance coral growth or an amazing new fish they've picked up at their local fish shop, but forget to ever talk about the time when something went wrong or a regret purchased they made. You asked for it! We are back and better than ever, get ready to dive deeper into the aquarium hobby like never before. Season 2 coming soon.....
This the season finale episode I wanted to reflect on my journey within the hobby, how I started, where I'm at and ultimately where I'm heading. Today, I'd like to delve a little deeper into something slightly fish related and kind of the reason I started this podcast to help give a more honest insight into this hobby. Recently I've been speaking to a few good friends whom I've met through this hobby online and it's becoming ever more apparent as with anything related I feel with social media about the constant need to be “Liked” or show everyone how popular you are. I feel a lot of this now stems from many people thinking because they have a brand sponsoring them they are now part of the elitist. If you want to help support my channel/brand/mission then consider becoming a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mrbrightfryed Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCU5VAc5XvyRK_KgRy_1jUvw Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mr_brightfryed/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/brightfryed Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mrbrightfryed
In this episode I we're talking tannins. Yes the part of the hobby which kind of gets put to the side due to the often referred to as “dirty” look. Which personally I LOVE! So I'm no expert in the world of botanicals but I have tried a couple of aquariums with a natural style and I have to say I think they look amazing, I love the tinted colour of the water from all the tannins released from either the driftwood or leaves. In this episode I'd like to talk a bit about planted aquariums, what they are and what you REALLY need to get started. A planted aquarium is well…an aquarium which uses live plants. This style of aquarium is becoming ever more popular within the hobby and now newcomers are often ditching the fake plastic plants and treasure chest bubble makers of the past and replacing them to create a more natural feel. As touched on in the previous episode I'd like to chat a little about the world of saltwater aquariums or “Reefing”. As I talked about previously, this part of the hobby is probably one of the most visually appealing and yet everywhere you look within shops or online it appears that you can only introduce yourself into this part of the hobby with a big wod of money.
