Ep 469: Faux Botanicals & Dark Paint with Abigail Ahern

How to Decorate

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2026 62:57

We are thrilled to welcome British interior designer Abigail Ahern to the podcast! Known for breaking all the traditional design rules, Abigail is famous for her signature moody palettes, her bold take on botanicals, and her wildly popular faux floral collection. In addition to her booming interior design business, she has an e-commerce site, five books, and a popular YouTube channel. Abigail sits down with Caroline, Taryn, and Liz to discuss how she got her start working on the picture desk for Sir Terence Conran before her husband's job relocated them to Detroit, unexpectedly launching her hands-on interior design career. She shares her secrets for styling faux florals so they look incredibly authentic, why she will always champion a dark and moody room, and why lighting is the single most important element of any dinner party. Quick Decorating Takeaways: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark: Abigail dispels the common misconception that dark paint makes a room feel smaller. She embraces dark, moody palettes because the deep colors actually blur the edges of a room, creating a cozy, enveloping, and sophisticated space. The Secret to Faux Florals: When styling her famous faux stems, Abigail approaches arrangements with an interior design mindset. She recommends mixing contrasting textures (like pairing a delicate rose with a hearty hydrangea), varying the heights of the stems in your vase, and bending them so they don't just stand straight up. You don't have to be super delicate with them—the goal is to make the arrangement feel wild, organic, and intriguing. Lighting is Everything: For Abigail, the lighting at a dinner party is even more important than the menu. She recommends layering lights at different heights around the room and using tea light holders all over the house to create an inviting, multi-dimensional glow that makes everyone feel relaxed. Natasha helps Helen pack clothes ahead of moving to 5 The Green. Henry's become very organised, labelling all his boxes, whilst Jack is less helpful. They talk about the dairy and Helen's excitement over expanding her herd. Natasha confesses she's almost jealous of Helen's enthusiasm. Driving to Shropshire, Tom points out the irony of using the money from selling retired Tony's Anguses to buy Montey's from another retired farmer. Helen points out how they're saving money by not having to bring them over from France. They then admire the cows in the field and Helen tries to persuade Tom to buy the full herd of ten. Tom points out their mobile dairy would struggle to handle the extra cows and Helen reluctantly agrees to only buy the six they came for. Later, while chatting over a cup of tea, enthusiastic Natasha confesses she has a new business idea for Bridge Farm, to branch out into Botanicals and organic skincare. It could finance sending the twins to private school. Helen tells her to go for it, if that's what they want to do. When Rex catches Alice at The Stables, they agree neither wants to break up. Rex then apologises for what he said to Brian. Alice doesn't know the specifics, so Rex tells her everything. Recalling their fight on Sunday, Alice says she's inherited the Aldridge habit of lashing out. Rex admits to his own flaws and they agree to put it behind them, before Rex reveals his dad texted him, asking to meet Alice. Would she be up for that?

Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace consistently invite us to enter a meditative state. Whatever the medium, each piece seems to raise more questions than provide answers. The artists, respected for their innovative work, have concluded the series for which they are most known, large-scale blown glass fruit and vegetable forms. Their subsequent work includes life-size figurative wood and glass sculptures as well as outdoor bronze installations and glass work that features blown vessels and cast panels with illustrations of the 'first facts' of bird identification realized through applied glass powder drawings. Most recently, the artists have been working on their Botanicals, a body of work that preserves real flowers in composite and glass.  Kirkpatrick and Mace have worked collaboratively for the past 47 years after meeting at the Pilchuck Glass School in 1979. The artists have consistently explored seminal themes: principles of drawing as incorporated into glass, the metaphoric content of human relationship to nature and the appropriation of materials to support a visual idea. They recently installed a large public art project at the Seattle Center in Seattle, Washington.  Kirkpatrick (born in Des Moines, Iowa, 1952) and Mace (born in Exeter, New Hampshire, 1949) have exhibited, lectured and taught extensively throughout the world. They taught for 12 years at Pilchuck Glass School. Their collaborative work is included in collections and museums around the world including the Corning Museum of Glass, NY; The Detroit Institute of Art Detroit, MI; The Boston Museum of Fine Art, Boston, MA; Hokkaido Museum, Japan; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York NY; Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Lausanne, Switzerland; Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, WA; Toledo Art Museum, Toledo, OH and The National Museum of American Art, Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.  Mark Doty, wrote in the introduction of the book, Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C Mace: "This might be the most complex yoking of all, the way that two sensibilities overlap, merge, separate, conflict and resolve. A continuing dynamic, itself both unstable and solid, evolving, transforming materials and processes as it transforms itself." Kirkpatrick and Mace were recognized in 2019 for their outstanding achievement in the field of contemporary glass art by the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass, and have been elected to the American Craft Fellows in 2005, interviewed for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art in 2006 and given the 2001 Chateau Ste. Michelle Libensky Award by Pilchuck Glass School honoring outstanding contemporary artists working in glass. Kirkpatrick served as a trustee on the board of Pilchuck Glass School for 16 years.  Now, the artists split their time between a home and studio in Seattle, Washington, and a farm on the Olympic Peninsula near the Washington Coast. Their current Botanical sculptures grew out of a desire to capture the essence of a plant by preserving it through portraiture. Each plant is harvested as it shares its bloom, brought into the studio, deconstructed, dried and reassembled. The specimen is then suspended within layers of composites and glass. The finished work has been recreated through the artist's hand and dependent on the artist's view of the specimen by observing in life, the plant's structure, the result, a portrait of a flower. Of their Botanical sculpture, Daniel J. Hinkley, plantsman wrote: "The works of Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace capture the improbable if not the impossible, the apprehension of not just a moment reflecting the magic and majesty of our natural world but the abduction and amplification of a precise moment of perfection. To say that the paragon of their subjects has been frozen in time implies incorrectly that what you observe in their work is not simply an expiration and preservation of a plant at its floral zenith. These flowers embody the mystery and beauty, comprehended and embraced by the artists, to such a degree that one might actually perceive its ultimate drop of petal, abscission of leaf or growth of root." A selection of Kirkpatrick and Mace works is also on view now at the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York, in Tough Stuff: Women in the American Glass Studio. The exhibition showcases the groundbreaking creators who shaped the past and future of glass art.

Chefsache – der GZ-Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2026 96:41

In unserer 31.

We made this episode to fill you all in on how the recent herb farm tour went.  In December I took a beautiful group of existing and emerging herb farmers down to Lutruwita aka Tasmania, to visit three different scale organic herb farms.  It was such an incredible adventure that I am still integrating and digesting. We visited a small, medium and large scale herb farm on the tour, having the honour of being welcomed to Gould's farm, Hop Valley Farm, and Marleen Herbs.  My intention was/is to see more potent organic herb production in Australia.  This is such an important thing to be putting our energy into, considering that over 90% of the herbs in commercial circulation are grown overseas. Its estimated that 90% of what you see at most retail outlets, in herbal preparations and herbal/naturopathic dispensaries is imported.Ann Armbrecht in her book The Business of Botanicals, states that herbs can change hands as many as 10 to 15 times on their journey from the original source (farmer or wildcrafter) to the final product on a store shelf. Even with strict regulations in Australia, the herbs that we import are often adulterated, fumigated, irradiated, misidentified and stored in poor conditions resulting in poor quality.  Often the growers/foragers/manufacturers/companies don't actually even like their job, let alone care about the ‘consumer' of the herb.  So imagine what energy is being transferred into the herb! I would like to extend boundless gratitude to our wonderful farm hosts, Greg Whitten, Kala, Monica Francia, Cara, Ronald, Marleen and Emma Van de Winckel. It really was such an honour to be welcomed into the homes and farms of these inspiring, powerful and humble farmers. To be in the energy of their down to earth, salt of the land lifestyles. All of them were so forthcoming and would love to see more herb farmers emerging around Australia. Thanks also to the beautiful souls who came on this adventure and for being so flexible and adaptable with all the twists and turns.SHOWNOTES:The Business of BotanicalsHerbal HarvestEmail me if you would like to purchase a PDF for $40: info@alchemillaherbals. com.au2026 Lutruwita Herb Farm Tour expression of interest:https://forms.gle/RLqNUHSdbwHCbpQW6*BUY ME A CUPPA*If you liked the episode and want more, a cuppa fuels our work and time, which is given for free. Julie takes listeners on a journey from her upbringing in rural Alaska—surrounded by wild forests and medicinal plants—to her global studies in botanical medicine, and ultimately to the creation of a skincare line that celebrates the intelligence of plants.Long before “clean beauty” became a buzzword, Julie envisioned formulations that go beyond the usual staples. Leaf People integrates powerful botanicals like reishi, rhodiola, ginkgo, burdock root, and horsetail, capturing the full spectrum of each plant's chemical and energetic properties. Her approach is holistic, emphasizing whole-plant synergy and honoring the subtle energetics of each ingredient through practices like meditation, Reiki, and blessings by Tibetan monks.Julie also shares her philosophy of ally pairing, inspired by how plants naturally grow together in communities, and how this principle shapes her formulations. Beyond skincare, Leaf People reflects a broader vision of connection—between people, plants, and the environment. What's a Scotch distillery doing making gin? For that matter, what's a Scotch distillery doing making an unbelievably peated single malt in packaging so dark you can barely read it? Douglas Taylor of Bruichladdich and The Botanist sits down with the band to discuss the iconoclastic whisky distillery, their philosophy behind pushing the envelope with locally sourced barley, how they wound up making a London Dry Gin, and how that story involves punching a hole in a building with a wrecking ball.Plus, it was Grand Army's birthday! Damon recaps the party (many Hard Starts were involved) and talks about what it means to have lasted ten years in one of the hardest industries on EarthFollow Bruichladdich at @bruichladdichFollow the The Botanist at @thebotanistgin_usThe Speakeasy is now on YouTube! Kara Reich is the founder of Me Time Botanicals, a clean, high-performance skincare line born out of her personal journey of healing and self-care. After navigating an abusive relationship and battling hormonal acne from stress and burnout, Kara discovered the power of natural skincare rituals in transforming both her skin and her spirit. Her passion led her to study organic cosmetic science and launch Me Time Botanicals—a simplified, affordable skincare line rooted in plant-based ingredients, science, and self-love. Today, Kara empowers women to pause, prioritize their well-being, and glow from the inside out. _________________________________ If you're a skincare lover (or just skincare-curious), this episode is a must-listen! Ektoras Binikos has had quite a life in the New York cocktail scene. From Sugar Monk up in Harlem (which was recently named a 50 Best Discovery) to Bitter Monk in Industry City, the boozy entrepreneur is now at the helm of Atheras Spirits. They're making a bunch of new creations, ranging from a straightforward distillate flavored with fig leaves (which may or may not be pre-used by The Speakeasy's hosts) to an amaro based on the preservatives used in mummification. Ektoras sits down with Damon & Greg to talk about running a microdistillery in Brooklyn, sourcing weird botanicals, and what the customer can expect from these very off-the-beaten-path liqueurs.Plus, it's daylight savings time! Be sure to set the clocks on your microwave and stove ahead this weekend.
