Whelp, looks like Clownfish TV was actually RIGHT about indie animation being the future of the animation industry. Disney vet Dana Terrace (The Owl House) has joined a long list of other professionals who are joining the indie revolution outside of the Burbank studio system. Put another nickel in the jar, please. Disney veteran Dana Terrace joins indie animation revolution with Glitch Productions, signaling a major shift away from traditional studio systems and potentially threatening the dominance of established animation powerhouses. Netflix is distributing indie content without taking rights, allowing creators to maintain full creative control and reach millions of fans, challenging the traditional studio model of content ownership and distribution. Renowned creators like Tom Ruegger, Paul Dini, and more are launching their own indie projects, suggesting a mass exodus of talent from major studios and potentially destabilizing the industry. The animation industry's recent struggles, including LA fires and economic factors, are pushing creators towards indie projects, potentially leading to a decentralization of animation production. The success of indie animation mirrors trends in the gaming industry, where AAA studios are struggling while indie games thrive, indicating a broader shift in entertainment consumption patterns. The rise of indie animation challenges the long-held belief that hit cartoons require large studio resources, potentially democratizing the industry and opening doors for new, diverse voices.

AAA Gaming is Imploding...

Clownfish TV: Audio Edition

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2024 17:24

AAA Gaming seems to be dying in real time. More layoffs have been announced by Sony and EA, and the new PlayStation president vows to make games cheaper going forward. It makes sense, though. There have been high-profile disasters like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League whose sales have been beaten by indie titles such as Helldivers 2, Palworld, and Lethal Company. Can studios afford to take chances on games that take 5-10 years to release and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to produce? ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: The AAA gaming sector appears to be at a crossroads in 2024, grappling with significant challenges that question the sustainability of its current business model. The industry has faced a record number of layoffs, with over 10,500 gaming professionals losing their jobs in 2023, and the trend continuing into 2024 with several thousand more cuts reported within the first few months alone. High-profile companies like Niantic, Epic Games, Unity, Riot, CD Projekt Red, Microsoft, Sony PlayStation, Bungie, EA, and Ubisoft have all made significant reductions in their workforce. This wave of layoffs is indicative of deeper issues within the industry, including falling video game revenues and increasing development costs. The financial aspect is particularly concerning, with nominal U.S. consumer spend on video games showing only a marginal increase in 2023 over 2022 and a real-term decline compared to previous years. This revenue stagnation comes despite the first price hike for premium games in decades, suggesting that higher prices alone cannot offset the broader challenges facing the industry. The AAA gaming model, known for its high development costs and long production timelines, is under scrutiny for its viability in the current market environment. The industry has seen instances where high-profile titles like "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" have underperformed against indie games, highlighting a shift in consumer preferences and the risky nature of betting on blockbuster titles. The pressure to deliver both technologically advanced and content-rich games has led to a scenario where the failure or even moderate performance of a AAA title can significantly impact a developer's financial stability. In response to these challenges, there's a call within the industry for fundamental changes in how games are developed and marketed. This includes potentially moving away from an overemphasis on technical prowess, considering shorter games, and setting more realistic sales targets. The current trend towards live-service titles, where developers can continuously update and monetize a game post-launch, represents a shift in strategy aimed at mitigating the risks associated with the traditional AAA development cycle. As the industry navigates these turbulent waters, the decisions made by major players like Sony and EA, as well as the strategies adopted by new PlayStation leadership to reduce game production costs, will be crucial in determining the future landscape of AAA gaming. The viability of the AAA model is being tested, and the industry's ability to adapt and innovate will likely dictate its success in the years to come. At least, that's what a group of researchers at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University thinks. The team recently published a study in the journal Experimental Biology suggesting that Amphiphrion ocellaris, or clown anemonefish, may be counting. Specifically, the authors think the fish may be looking at the number of vertical white stripes on each other as well as other anemonefish as a way to identify their own species. Not only that — the researchers think that the fish are noticing the minutiae of other anemonefish's looks because of some fishy marine geopolitics.

Lees hier meer over het onderzoek: Clownfish count stripes to distinguish friend from foeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Off the coast of Queensland, Australia, in warm tropical waters, you can find the amazingly colourful Great Barrier Reef. It is home to over 40 different types of sea anemones, which are home to a lot of different kinds of sea life. Clownfish use sea anemones as shelter, taking advantage of their toxin-filled stingers as protection. Yet, while these two are friends, if you touch one as a human, the resulting painful stings can make them feel more like Enemy Anemone by Daniel Newman from New Mill Industries.
