In 2.

Many of us likely have childhood memories of a zoo visit: gibbons swinging above us, lions pacing, a polar bear taking a plunge. Zoos also can play an important role in conservation, particularly for insects. One example is the work done at the San Diego Zoo to help invertebrates by solving mysteries about their habitat and life cycle needs, in some cases bringing back species on the brink of extinction.Joining us to talk about this work is Paige Howorth. Paige leads the Entomology Department at the San Diego Zoo, where she is involved with the day-to-day care of dozens of species of insects, arachnids, and other invertebrates in the zoo's collection, as well as leading conservation programs for rare species. In addition, Paige serves on the steering committee of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Terrestrial Invertebrate Taxon Advisory Group and co-leads the AZA SAFE (save animals from extinction) program for the North American monarch butterfly. She's also been a collaborator with Xerces for many years.Thank you for listening! For more information go to xerces.org/bugbanter.

One of the most common inquiries in this industry is “how do I keep a shark?” This episode is about exactly that! There are a variety of “doable” shark species for home aquariums – none of which will be easy – but they sure do make some amazing pets. Ben, Amy, and Charles discuss a variety of shark species from the genera chiloscyllium, hemiscyllium, and atelomycterus. Bamboo, epaulette, and cat sharks are intelligent and complex animals, and their care should not be understated. They require large enclosures, lots of maintenance, regular enchrichment, and diverse diets. If you’re not willing to provide this level of care for the duration of their lives, consider enjoying them in public aquariums instead! (Or stop by and enjoy our resident sharks!) Please enjoy a popular older episode and I will be back with something new as soon as I can! Aquariums and Zoos have to be ready for all sorts of scenarios in order to keep the guests, animals, and staff safe. We might be surprised by things on occasion, but we try to be methodical about our response so that everything goes smoothly. Hurricanes? Fire? Animal escape? Long time zoo and aquarium educator, Terran McGinnis discusses her passion for informal education from her earliest days as a park naturalist. From great storytelling to laughter, she describes some of the most effective ways to reach audiences of all ages. As she steps down from chairing the education committee for the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums after many years of service to the zoological community, Terran talks about how the industry has learned from its earlier push to share "just the facts" about animals, in hopes of avoiding the appearance of anthropomorphism, to weaving in more of the powerful emotional side of working with and preserving species for future generations.
