Welcome to episode 14! The dos and don'ts of hard drive safety! Today I am talking about how to avoid that pesky exclamation mark in the corner of your images and how to not lose things ever again. First, I want to discuss not moving things on your hard drive. Gone are the days of accessing photos via folders on your hard drive. We will now be viewing and moving images within your collections in Lightroom. By moving images in your folders, you will then see the exclamation mark in the corner of your images. This is because your Lightroom catalog no longer understands where the images are and will then ask you to find said image. The same goes for renaming files on your hard drive. Your catalog will also become confused about those images and will put an annoying exclamation mark on the corner of those images. So, in other words, do not rename or move files on your hard drive. Only move images within your collections in lightroom. You will be able to name your files when you import them. I do recommend using a import preset. I teach how to create an import preset in the eBook. By creating one you will be organizing in collections within your catalog, it will name your files, and include your metadata, as well as organize all of your images within you hard drive. Next, I want to touch base on hard drive safety. Please do not keep all of your hard drive in the same place on your desk. What if a fire happened and all of your back ups and hard drives were gone? Please invest in an off location hard drive. Mirror copy to this hard drive consistently so that if a natural disaster happens you will not lose everything. With that being said it is also extremely important to be backing up! Please mirror copy everything on your main hard drive to a backup hard drive. This way if your main hard drive fails you can pick up right where you left off on a backup hard drive. This is why I don't recommend relying on a cloud-based system. I cloud based system will not back up your lightroom catalog. Therefor if you lose anything you will have to re organize everything again. EPISODE 13: WHY HAVE A HARD DRIVE? 1. NEVER RUN OUT OF SPACE ON YOUR COMPUTER AGAIN-I cannot tell you how many times I have had photographers come to me and tell me that they are so tired of running out of space on their computer. There is a better way to do things friends! Buying an external hard drive will keep you from having to make more space constantly. Gone are the days of being unorganized today is the day that you are going to go out and buy an external hard drive! 2. HARD DRIVES FAIL – Yes you heard me! If you learn anything from this podcast it should be that computers and hard drives fail! Be prepared. So many photographers have lost work and had to make that shameful call to their clients explaining what happened. Don't let that be you. Make sure that you are backing up to at least one other place. I recommend buying two – three hard drives at the beginning of each year. That way you can mirror copy to each. If one hard drive fails, you will have an identical copy to pick up right where you left off. Just think; if you have a hard drive that has three years of images on it and It fails you will lose far more than a hard drive that only has one year's worth of images. 3. CATALOGS BEGIN TO GLITCH WHEN THERE IS NOT ENOUGH SPACE – Did you know that when you run out of space on your computer that you hard drives will begin to fail. This is the most common reason why Lightroom catalogs begin to glitch and fail. Make sure to check your hard drive to see if it is too full on a regular basis to avoid the frustration of having to re edit any work because your hard drive failed. If you are wondering how to do this, I teach this in the Ultimate Guide to Lightroom & Hard Drive Organization. This eBook will teach you how to; - Choose the right hard drive for you - Reformat your new hard drive- Create a Lightroom Catalog- Create a Lightroom Import preset- How to store your preset with your catalog- How to back up and be safe with your hard drive- The dos and don'ts of your hard drive- And most importantly; HOW TO NEVER LOSE ANYTHING AGAIN! 4. ORGANIZATION – Did you know that one of Lightroom's key features is organization? Yes, Lightroom is mostly known for its editing capabilities but my favorite part is the ability to create collections and collection sets. By creating collections, you can organize your images within your Lightroom catalog. Like I said before…Gone are the days of thousands of folders everywhere or multiple catalogs. By using my system from The Ultimate Guide to Lightroom & Hard Drive Organization you will only have one folder on your hard drive and one catalog. If you are ready to be more organized and never lose anything again head to the link below to check out The Ultimate Guide To Lightroom & Hard Drive Organization - https://www.laurenmaevephotography.com/store/the-ultimate-guide-to-digital-asset-management Don't forget! I will be going live every Wednesday to talk about hard drive organization And…. The 50% off sale will be happening this month on May 31st - June 1st! See you all next week same time same place!
Today I am talking about my hard drive and lightroom organization system. This system is THE reason why I haven't lost an image in over 5 years! Remember, it is not IF BUT WHEN you will lose something as a photographer. Are you that photographer that is constantly running out of room on your computer and always having to make more space? Then this is podcast is about to change your life! Gone are the days of having thousands of folders on your desktop full of images. In this podcast I will be covering my 7 step system to never losing anything ever again! 1.BUYING A NEW HARD DRIVE EACH YEAR - Each year I buy 3 new hard drives! Yes, you heard me 3! You are probably sitting there thinking; but why? Each year I have a main, backup, and off location hard drive. This way I can back up/mirror copy to three different locations just in case one of my hard drive fails. Because let's be honest… hard drives do fail. It is our job as photographers to be prepared. 2.REFORMATTING YOUR NEW HARD DRIVE - After buying my hard drives I reformat all of them. Reformatting is just a fancy way of saying erase. All hard drives come from the factory with a bunch of unneeded junk on them. 3. CREATING A NEW CATALOG EACH YEAR – Each year I will create a new catalog. By doing this you will be much more organized. If your hard drive were to fail and you had 3 years' worth of images and catalogs on it that would be devastating. This is why we designate a hard drive and catalog to each year. As photographers our goal is to have an efficient workflow that allows for easy organization. 4.CREATING A NEW IMPORT PRESET EACH YEAR – My favorite thing to teach to photographers wanting to better their organization is how to create an import preset. An import preset will; organize your images within your images folder on your hard drive, apply metadata, name your files, and organize your photoshoot within a collection in Lightroom! 5.STORING YOUR PRESET WITH YOUR CATALOG – It is important to store your preset with your catalog so that you can use your new hard drive on any computer and still have your editing and import preset. If you are like me and go on the road you will be bouncing back between a desktop computer and a laptop.6.CHECKING IF YOUR HARD DRIVE IS FULL – Ok friends, if you are multitasking, please come back to me. Because this next part is important! When your hard drive becomes too full your lightroom catalog will start to glitch and fail. Make sure to check if your hard drive is full on a regular basis so that you can avoid the heartache of a glitchy lightroom. 7.BACKING UP – If you learn anything from this podcast today I hope that it is backing up! Please back up to at least one other location if not two. As I mentioned in step one backing up to a backup and off location drive is THE safest way to never losing anything. I typically mirror copy my hard drives to each other. Did today's podcast open your mind on using a hard drive? If you are ready to apply this system and never lose anything again head to; https://www.laurenmaevephotography.com/store/the-ultimate-guide-to-digital-asset-management This guide will take you step by step through my entire hard drive and Lightroom setup system. I will also be teaching; What hard drive to buy, how to reformat a hard drive, creating a catalog and import preset, storing your preset with your hard drive, and most importantly how to back up! Plus! At the end of each chapter is a step by step video to teach your visually. Just a little reminder, this eBook comes with a hour mentoring session to get you through the trickier parts. I would greatly appreciate if you could hit that subscribe button and leave a review. This will make it so that I can keep creating free educational content for you all! See you all next week same time same place!
Hi friends! This week I am talking about 3 ways to get more bookings! Are you feeling a rut or are just starting out but needing that consistent income? Let's chat about a few ways that I think will help. 1. Show up to events for free and sell prints! Yes, you heard me… do it for free! In the beginning of my career, I showed up to high school rodeos for free and sold prints. After a few years of donating my time, I started to see a return. Many of those families that I made connections with at the high school rodeos later hired me for family portraits and senior portraits. I still work with many of them to this day! When you consistently put your smiling face in front of people within your niche you will grow a loyal client base. Think about it this way, if you show up for them, they will show up for you! 2. Stay consistent on social media. I know I preach this a lot… but honestly, Instagram is where I get 80% of my bookings. By showing up consistently and creating a bond with your followers they will be loyal to you in return. My biggest tip is to post daily and show up in your stories 3 times a day. Remember to show your face as much as possible! 3. Grow an email list! When I need to drum up some business, I always resort to sending out an email to all of my email subscribers. This never fails to drum up some work! By growing your email list, you will have the ability to tell people about upcoming deals and promotions. To create emails and organize email subscribers I use Flodesk, an email marketing system. Feel free to use my Flodesk discount code below to get started making stunning emails! EPISODE 11 - GEAR UP KEEP Hi friends! Today I am talking about camera gear up keep. I know… this may be a dry subject but there are some really great gems in this episode that you can take home and actually use. Firstly, it is important to keep your gear in a cool and dry place. This especially applies to those of you that live in areas with extreme temperatures. Cameras can malfunction when in these conditions. For example, if you live in an area that freezes your camera can freeze and will sometimes have condensation. Heat can also make a camera not work as well. Be aware that temperatures that are 100 degrees plus can make is so cameras will turn off. Next, I want to touch base on UV filters. Attaching a UV filter to your lens will protect the glass from getting damaged or scratched. You do not need an expensive UV filter, you can buy a cheaper filter that does not change the style of your lens. Get your gear cleaned! Getting your gear cleaned once a year is good practice. You will know when it is time when you start seeing dust spots in your images. This is a result from dust on your sensor. By sending your camera in to get cleaned the company will blow air safely into the sensor and clean any dust. Finally let's talk about CPS! CPS or Canon Professional Services is one of THE best things I have ever done for my business. CPS is a service provided by Canon that cleans and repairs your gear. It is a yearly subscription that will ensure that your gear repair and cleaning is a priority. When signing up you will receive; -Priority gear maintenance and cleaning-Priority gear repair -Priority shipping -Goody bag delivered when you sign up There are three different packages that you can choose from. Each package reflects the amount of Canon gear that you have purchased in the past. In other words the more gear the better package! I hope this weeks podcast was helpful! Don't forget to sign up for The LMP Collective Facebook group for everyday tips, tricks, and video tutorials. I will also be going live every Wednesday on The @TheLMPCollective Instagram page at noon to talk about each week's subject. Wanting to dip your toes into the wedding photography industry? What's In My Camera Bag! 70 – 2OO F2.8 This is my bread-and-butter lens! The 70 – 200 is the first lens I grab at each session and couldn't imagine my shoots with out it. This is a massive lens but because of its size there is more compression and with compression comes gorgeous blurry backgrounds. The 70 – 200 is extremely versatile and is great for both portraits and sports. 24-70 F2.8 This is the “small spaces” lens! If you are shooting in doors and need a wider-angle lens this is the lens for you. The 24-70 is a wide-angle lens that does has less distortion than other wide angle lenses. This is also a great starter lens. 35 MM F1.2 I LOVE THIS LENS! Friends, if you are wanting to add a great addition to your camera bag this is it! The 35 mm has an artsy and sharp feel and will include more background because it has less compression. This lens also sings with detail shots and close up artsy like work. It is also a wider angle lens that is great for small spaces. MACRO Although amazing I would recommend purchasing this lens after investing in other portrait lenses. But with that being said… This lens is spectacular for those close-up detail shots. The macro has great compression and will create that sought after bokeh effect in your backgrounds. Invest in this lens later in your career! 50 MM f1.2This is THE most used lens by wedding photographers and is also extremely versatile. The 50 mm is great for portraits and detail shots. If you are struggling on what lens to buy first this is the one! The 50 mm is a great investment and will remain in your camera bag for years. 5D MARK IIIThe Canon 5d Mark iii is my go to camera body! I own two of these camera bodies and have been using it for years. The 5D Mark III has a warmer feel to it that has become my style over the years. Although this is an older camera is a great one! 5D MARK IV My arch nemesis…. Hahaha yep I said it! I bought this camera about a year ago and have been slightly struggling with it's more cool toned style. Although, this camera has some really cool features like Wi-Fi capability and a touch screen. This is an incredible camera and is what I would recommend to all up and coming photographers. If you are needing more help on choosing the right camera gear head to the LMP Collective Facebook group and join the daily discussion on camera gear this month! https://www.facebook.com/groups/641266380363861/
Let's talk relationships! Growing your social media following should be like building a relationship that you want to see last long term. There are five steps to a successful relationship:Five steps of a relationships. 1. Meeting phase 2.Nurturing phase 3. Adding value 4. Being consistent 5. Not ghosting. So, let's talk a little about each of these steps. 1. THE MEETING PHASE. When it comes to that first meeting it is important to have what I call “the wow factor”. Think about what makes you unique and special. Is there something about you that is extraordinary? If so… use it! Talk about it. Wow factors start conversations and conversations lead to getting hired! Next, create a bond. Make sure your followers feel confident that you know your Sh!t! Use question stickers and polls to identify with your audience so they feel involved. Maybe ask what brand of shampoo they use for their horse? This will make your followers feel involved and valued. Knowing your niche and making sure to post things that they relate with – For example, if you are an equestrian photographer post equestrian lifestyle things to your stories. Lastly, work on creating trust with your followers by showing up consistently for them and responding to messages, comments, and stories. 2. NURTURING YOUR AUDIENCE. Nurture your audience by showing up consistently! You can do this by adding stories that include your face. People need to know what you look like in order to bond with the idea of you. A great way to nurture your audience is show up in your stories throughout the day. For example, post a story at 8 am, 12 am, and 6 pm. This way your followers will be seeing your face consistently and be reminded of you. Another way to nurture your audience is to know your audience. Sit down and create a client avatar. Know what this person does for fun, for work, eats, buys, and looks at online. Appeal to that avatar in every way possible. 3. ADD VALUE. Add value by posting tips and tricks that apply to your niche and potential client. For example, create a post on what to wear or what to expect during a session with you. You could also solve your clients' problems by posting a helpful guide on favorite locations. Remember, you should be giving 80% value and 20% pitching/selling. If you reverse that ratio, you will start driving people away. 4. GHOSTING. Think about the times you have been ghosted by a potential new boyfriend/girlfriend…. It sucks right?!? Let's avoid doing that to our followers by staying consistent. By responding to DMs, and comments your followers will feel involved and appreciated. You can also comment on your followers' posts and send messages. The more interaction the better! It is always a good idea to randomly pop up in our followers lives and leave a little happiness. 3 Tips To Making Your Productivity Better 1. Batch Editing Creating content can become super daunting after a while. Having to create all of the time and the pressure behind putting out consistent content starts to add up after a while. After all we are content creators and this is how we snag clients. I recommend choosing one day a week or month to set aside for batching out your social media posts. Wouldn't it be nice to sit down on the first Monday of each month and write out 30 Instagram posts? Even better, have them automatically post using the Later app. This also applies to emails and blog posts. If you are like me and hate blogging then get all of your blogs out of the way in January during the off season 2. Repurposing Content Repurpose everything friends! For example, if you are writing blogs copy and paste some of that content to your social media posts. This also applies to emails as well, grab little snippets from your monthly emails and add them to blogs and social media posts. Remember! Most people are only seeing you in one specific place. Why not post the same content everywhere so it will be more likely seen? You can also repurpose content from your website to your social media, emails, and blogs. 3. Have A Routine I love having a daily routine which keeps me on track. I typically work from 7 am to 11 am and then work out from 11 to 12 and then grab lunch. I am able to have a 4 hour workday because of my routine that keeps me productive. My favorite tip is to work on each of your clients galleries for 30 minutes a day. This way by then end of two weeks (or whatever your turn around rate is) each gallery should be finished. I have also found that this makes for less burn out. I used to edit each gallery until it was finished but I found myself getting tired of looking at the same thing for so long. Next let's talk about learning how to say no to things that don't work for your routine. If you learn anything today I hope that it is that it's ok to say no! Especially if it just isn't something that will better your life. Ok! I hope that was helpful and I can not wait to hear all of your feed back after implementing these three steps into your work life! HOW TO PRICE WHEN YOU ARE JUST STARTING Are you a new photographer wondering where to start out when it comes to pricing? When it comes to pricing I hear a lot of reservations from new photographers. I highly recommend researching what your competitors are charging in your area and then pricing $50 to $100 less. If you are just starting out and feeling stuck with pricing this would be an ideal time to think about buying a mentoring session or sitting down with a good friend. WHEN TO RAISE YOUR PRICESMany of my students ask me; “When will I know it's a good time to raise my prices?” You will know when you are ready to raise your prices trust me! Once that burn out begins it is TIME to raise your prices to a point that makes it more worth your time. When you become busier and you are having to turn down work because of the lack of time then you are officially ready to raise your prices. I would urge you to raise your prices every year slightly for the first 3-5 years when starting out and then every other year after. MY PRICES I typically charge $450 per portrait session. This session includes an online gallery and 60 + images. I urge you to either charge similarly to others In your area or that are within your niche. UP SELLING I also wanted to touch base on the thought of up selling. Up selling is more popular in some areas and less in others. But with that being said it is a lot more common in the English horse disciplines than it is with the western from my experience. Up selling is where you chare an initial fee for just your time and talent. That fee does not include the actually digitals or rights to prints. After the images are edited it is common that this photographer will meet with said client and present the images in person. The client will then purchase their favorite images as either prints or digitals. IMPOSTER SYNDROME you are feeling anxious about charging too much because of your lack of experience remember that many have stood where you stand and have eventually become successful in their careers. There is room for each one of us in this industry weather it is over saturated or not. Do not under cut yourself because of your lack of confidence. I guarantee if you charge what you think you are worth you will be hired! PRINTING PRICESMuch like basing your prices off of your competitors I would also recommend checking out what others are charging for their prints. Either sit down with a fellow photographer friend that knows the industry or pay for a mentoring session and ask for some help when it comes to what to charge for sessions, events, and prints. Want to set up a mentoring session? Click the link below!https://www.laurenmaevephotography.com/contactSee you all next week!XoXo, Lauren
