Hello to the What's New in Adapted PE listeners! We have been on a little bit of a hiatus for the last few months as we felt it was time to rethink the direction of the podcast and give it a fresh focus. Today I am talking about my hard drive and lightroom organization system. This system is THE reason why I haven't lost an image in over 5 years! Remember, it is not IF BUT WHEN you will lose something as a photographer. Are you that photographer that is constantly running out of room on your computer and always having to make more space? Then this is podcast is about to change your life! Gone are the days of having thousands of folders on your desktop full of images. In this podcast I will be covering my 7 step system to never losing anything ever again! 1.BUYING A NEW HARD DRIVE EACH YEAR - Each year I buy 3 new hard drives! Yes, you heard me 3! You are probably sitting there thinking; but why? Each year I have a main, backup, and off location hard drive. This way I can back up/mirror copy to three different locations just in case one of my hard drive fails. Because let's be honest… hard drives do fail. It is our job as photographers to be prepared. 2.REFORMATTING YOUR NEW HARD DRIVE - After buying my hard drives I reformat all of them. Reformatting is just a fancy way of saying erase. All hard drives come from the factory with a bunch of unneeded junk on them. 3. CREATING A NEW CATALOG EACH YEAR – Each year I will create a new catalog. By doing this you will be much more organized. If your hard drive were to fail and you had 3 years' worth of images and catalogs on it that would be devastating. This is why we designate a hard drive and catalog to each year. As photographers our goal is to have an efficient workflow that allows for easy organization. 4.CREATING A NEW IMPORT PRESET EACH YEAR – My favorite thing to teach to photographers wanting to better their organization is how to create an import preset. An import preset will; organize your images within your images folder on your hard drive, apply metadata, name your files, and organize your photoshoot within a collection in Lightroom! 5.STORING YOUR PRESET WITH YOUR CATALOG – It is important to store your preset with your catalog so that you can use your new hard drive on any computer and still have your editing and import preset. If you are like me and go on the road you will be bouncing back between a desktop computer and a laptop.6.CHECKING IF YOUR HARD DRIVE IS FULL – Ok friends, if you are multitasking, please come back to me. Because this next part is important! When your hard drive becomes too full your lightroom catalog will start to glitch and fail. Make sure to check if your hard drive is full on a regular basis so that you can avoid the heartache of a glitchy lightroom. 7.BACKING UP – If you learn anything from this podcast today I hope that it is backing up! Please back up to at least one other location if not two. As I mentioned in step one backing up to a backup and off location drive is THE safest way to never losing anything. Abstract: Touch-based object recognition relies on perception of compositional tactile features like roughness, shape, and orientation. However, it remains unclear how the underlying spatio-temporal information from tactile sensors is integrated to form such percepts. Here, we establish a barrel cortex-dependent perceptual task in which mice use their whiskers to discriminate tactile gratings based on orientation. Multi-electrode recordings in barrel cortex during task performance reveal weak orientation tuning in the firing rate of single neurons during grating exploration despite high cortical firing rates. However, population-based classifiers decode grating orientation in line with concurrent psychophysical measurements and correlate with decisions on a trial-by-trial basis. For better decoding performance, the precise temporal sequence of population activity is necessary during grating exploration but becomes dispensable after decision. Our results suggest that temporal sequences of activity in barrel cortex carry orientation information during exploration. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis, the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.Endocannabinoids and cannabinoids are also found at the intersection of the body’s various systems, allowing communication and coordination between different cell types. At the site of an injury, for example, cannabinoids can be found decreasing the release of activators and sensitizers from the injured tissue, stabilizing the nerve cell to prevent excessive firing, and calming nearby immune cells to prevent release of pro-inflammatory substances. By understanding this system we begin to see a mechanism that explains how states of consciousness can promote health or disease.In addition to regulating our internal and cellular homeostasis, cannabinoids influence a person’s relationship with the external environment. Socially, the administration of cannabinoids clearly alters human behavior, often promoting sharing, humor, and creativity. By mediating neurogenesis, neuronal plasticity, and learning, cannabinoids may directly influence a person’s open-mindedness and ability to move beyond limiting patterns of thought and behavior from past situations. Reformatting these old patterns is an essential part of health in our quickly changing environment. How CBD Interacts With the Brain:At least 60 biologically active molecules have been isolated from the Cannabis sativa plant. Cannabidiol(CBD) is one of the two primary cannabinoids found in the plant. You have probably heard of the other one, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It’s what produces the “high” associated with marijuana.Your brain has protein receptors all throughout it that respond to endocannabinoids. When a person ingests cannabis, the cannabinoids from the plant bind to these receptors. It’s similar to a key fitting into a lock. Exactly which receptors are affected, and what parts of the brain get involved, vary for each individual depending on their genetic make-up, drug-taking history, and expectations about the experience (the placebo effect). According to research, CBD interacts with the brain in numerous beneficial ways:1.- CBD Reduces InflammationWhile inflammation itself is necessary for your survival, an overactive inflammatory response isn’t good. Neuroinflammation plays a role in many neurological conditions. Research has linked inflammation to a range of issues from depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease, and memory trouble to stroke and epilepsy. There is some evidence to suggest that inflammation may also play a role in fatigue and brain fog.Preliminary studies suggest that CBD slows down a body’s overactive inflammatory response. He’s a sought after director when it comes to producing quality magic acts and has consulted on films and TV shows like The Mentalist and Spider Man 3. This is in addition to many TV appearances, his most recent being a performance on Pen & Teller’s Fool Us. There’s almost too much to mention about Jon, like his comic series Smoke and Mirrors, his products for magicians, and his involvement in the Academy of Magical Arts. Thubten Chodron, a long time Western Buddhist Nun, and founder of Sravasti Abbey in Washington State, took time with us to discuss her work as a teacher, including all of the work she has done with students online. She shared with us the potential down-sides of having a purely digital relationship with a teacher, as one doesn’t have the opportunity to see experience teacher as a living example. Chodron also commented on an issue she sees our society having with spiritual practice, in that we tend to want things to be easy and quick. Her, and other teachers, have observed a tendency to want a kind of “push-button enlightenment”. The truth, she says, is that there aren’t any shortcuts when it comes to transforming the mind and realizing suffering and it’s cessation. We finish off our conversation with Chodron exploring what has changed as Buddhism has come to the West. She mentions that much of the packaging has changed, but that it’s always a tricky process differentiating the packaging from the teachings of liberation. What is culture and what is the dharma? She gives her opinions on the subject, and shares some of the ways in which her community is trying to change with the times. We continue our discussion with the Venerable Thubten Chodron, a long time Western Buddhist Nun, and founder of Sravasti Abbey in Washington State. In this dialogue she shares with us the vision behind Sravasti Abbey, discussing the benefits of living the monastic life and using community life as a means to continue to deepen practice. She also discusses the importance of monasteries in western culture, and maintains that monastics can serve as the conscience of the society, citing the recent events in Burma as an example. She also holds that monasteries are a place of hope and optimism, and that many people feel inspired and challenged by the monastic lifestyle. Before closing off the conversation she also touches on the importance of the dharma being offered freely to all people, especially with regards to gender.
