Better Fuji Photos Episode 34: Camera Bag Essentials There are just some things that photographers should always have with them, and I like to break this up into the "must haves," "nice to haves," and "situation-dependent." I'm also a big fan of the modular system - using organizers like those from Think Tank Photo and Shimoda to keep all related items together for quick transfer from one bag to another. You can read more about all of these things in the accompanying web article: https://www.jmpeltier.com/camera-bag-essentials/ Must Haves: Lens cleaning kit Extra battery Extra storage (SD) card Appropriate smartphone apps Nice to Haves: White balance card Lens cleaning solution Small tripod Tablet and external storage Rite In The Rain notepad & pen Portable battery charger Situation Dependent: Polarizing filters Cable release Red headlamp External flash (& kit) Rain cover Please subscribe, rate, and review wherever you prefer to listen to your podcasts so we can keep this show going. The Shutter Brothers are back - and Wayne has his Normay camera bag with him! Today we get to find out what gear he plans to take with him to Norway in May. We also hear about Wayne's travel plans and what he expects to photograph there. Before we get to look inside Wayne's camera, however, it's time to empty the mailbag and read some listener mail. Listener Roger gives a tour of his "mini camera museum,' which you can see by going to our show notes. We also read two emails that refer to Pentax cameras, and as a coincidence, Kevin relates his recent fist time experiences with the Pentax Spotmatic SP and the Pentax ME Super. Meanwhile, Kevin talks about his second attempt at creating a darkroom space in his small condo, and Wayne shares more of his "Thoughts from the Field." Happy Photography!
Do your fam & friends ever act like you've kinda, uh, lost your mind when it comes to photography?! Like, you talk about a lens or the lighting inside a restaurant and you just get a buncha confused polite stares. It's not even that they're unsupportive but more so that they… just don't get it. To them, photography is just a job. It's a thing you do to make money, to survive, and to live your life. But to you, it's a lot more than that. It's the unlocking of something beautiful. It's the culmination of all of these different light frequencies to tell a story. It's the magic feeling you get when you've captured something you'll never forget. So, in the spirit of community (and no gatekeeping, ever), I wanted to remind you that this is always, always where you can come to ask questions and find out all the secrets… … a few of which I'm sharing in this podcast episode — AKA, an episode with all of the must-haves every new photographer NEEDS in their camera bag. Camera gear is equally exciting as it is stressful. There's a lot of options, some of them are very expensive, and sometimes it's confusing on what kinds of products you should be investing in. This is The Digital Story Podcast #839, April 19, 2022. Today's theme is "Camera Bag Odd Couple: GFX + MFT." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue I'm planning a couple outdoor preflight camping trips in preparation for our upcoming Eastern Sierra Workshop, and I had to laugh when I looked down into my camera bag. What I saw was the photography version of the Odd Couple. How did I end up here? Stay tuned for the first story on today's TDS Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show.
Some of the best camera gadgets that will make your photography more enjoyable.
What's In My Camera Bag! 70 – 2OO F2.8 This is my bread-and-butter lens! The 70 – 200 is the first lens I grab at each session and couldn't imagine my shoots with out it. This is a massive lens but because of its size there is more compression and with compression comes gorgeous blurry backgrounds. The 70 – 200 is extremely versatile and is great for both portraits and sports. 24-70 F2.8 This is the “small spaces” lens! If you are shooting in doors and need a wider-angle lens this is the lens for you. The 24-70 is a wide-angle lens that does has less distortion than other wide angle lenses. This is also a great starter lens. 35 MM F1.2 I LOVE THIS LENS! Friends, if you are wanting to add a great addition to your camera bag this is it! The 35 mm has an artsy and sharp feel and will include more background because it has less compression. This lens also sings with detail shots and close up artsy like work. It is also a wider angle lens that is great for small spaces. MACRO Although amazing I would recommend purchasing this lens after investing in other portrait lenses. But with that being said… This lens is spectacular for those close-up detail shots. The macro has great compression and will create that sought after bokeh effect in your backgrounds. Invest in this lens later in your career! 50 MM f1.2This is THE most used lens by wedding photographers and is also extremely versatile. The 50 mm is great for portraits and detail shots. If you are struggling on what lens to buy first this is the one! The 50 mm is a great investment and will remain in your camera bag for years. 5D MARK IIIThe Canon 5d Mark iii is my go to camera body! I own two of these camera bodies and have been using it for years. The 5D Mark III has a warmer feel to it that has become my style over the years. Although this is an older camera is a great one! 5D MARK IV My arch nemesis…. Hahaha yep I said it! I bought this camera about a year ago and have been slightly struggling with it's more cool toned style. Although, this camera has some really cool features like Wi-Fi capability and a touch screen. This is an incredible camera and is what I would recommend to all up and coming photographers. I'm going to preface this post by saying that none of the established manufacturers are making bad camera bags. We'd know; we've reviewed the most of any photography publication. Just take a look at all our camera bag reviews! The bags are all varying degrees of mediocre to good, but none of them are truly awful. Even if they can't be used as camera bags, they can be used for something else. But the modern camera bag industry has a big problem. I'm going to partially credit the idea for this post to my friend, Michael. One day, Michael said that there were too many camera bag manufacturers. And I agree with this. Michael specified that there are so many camera bags, but camera brands are making fewer and fewer cameras these days. While the camera industry shrunk, the camera bag industry grew. How does that make sense? Honestly, I don't know. But I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Kickstarter. Brands have been using Kickstarter for years to fund their products. This helps brands that otherwise might not have made it to market have a fighting chance. And that's great for them. The newer camera brands have done some innovative things that have changed the photo industry. Without them, the camera bag industry would be incredibly plain–more so than even vanilla. It would be plain like Greek yogurt. So why is this a problem? Well, it's becoming tougher for things to become more unique. The problem was already plaguing the camera world. But in the camera bag industry, manufacturers copy one another in some ways all the time. Some stand out from others through materials. Some have pretty different and innovative designs. I think you get the point. What do we do about it? This is a tough question. There are only a few types of bags that make sense in the camera bag industry: backpacks, slings, messenger bags, duffels, and roller bags. I haven't seen a lot of totes do a fantastic job at being camera bags. But I did some research into what types of bags could work. The Bucket. A bucket bag is sort of like a giant lens cloth. Just imagine one with dividers in there. It wouldn't need to hold a laptop, but it could work as a messenger bag or sling style bag. Randoseru. A special type of backpack with quick access. Plus, there's a hard front shell. Who wouldn't want this? Battle Bag: From the same website as above, these could be modified with the right know-how. I tried to years ago, but I failed. Guitar bag: I used to carry guitars and basses with me. They were awesome. But creating a larger bag that could hold lenses, cameras, lights, etc, could be pretty awesome if it would have a definitive shape. Further, lots of brands don't use materials like canvas and leather because they feel they're too heavy. But with the right design and support, they can work much better. Most camera bags are made from nylon. In recent years, other materials have come up. What about hemp? Or why not silk? Or how about recycled scarf materials like wool and cashmere? I think brands need to try new things.
If you have more than one camera and one lens, you probably have a camera bag. While you can toss your gear into any old sack, a thoughtfully-designed and well-built camera bag will enable you to carry your gear more which should lead to more photos and more photos is good! In this episode we attempt to make sense of all of our options for carrying cameras. We discuss the good and bad of shoulder bags, sling bags and backpacks and how the best camera bag is several camera bags. In this episode I discussed my 10 year history with Photography equipment and when to decide on whether to purchase equipment or rent equipment. Yes artist and honestly as people we thrive off of getting new things staying with the trend but in Photography that's not always the best thing to do it's more about who you are is an artist and what you're trying to say with your images that's really what determines what equipment you get are you doing this as a hobby is this your passion are you going to turn this into a career all of those factors help you decide when to rent or to buy .
Sure, you need to bring a camera and lens when you're going shooting, but what else should you always carry with you? Are there any little things that are easy to toss into your camera bag so you have them when you're out shooting? Yep! That's what today's 5 Quick Tips episode is all about.
If you listen to this podcast for very long, you know that it isn't really about camera gear, but this week I did want to focus on the five most essential pieces of gear you should always have in your camera bag. Luckily, you can get all of these pieces of gear for little to no money, and many of you might even have them already around the house. The purpose of this equipment is not to add to your physical gear, but rather to shift your mental approach to your photography. Each one of these pieces of gear is about changing your approach to your work so that you can focus on the most favorable results, embrace any opportunity, and find motivation when things fall apart.
The 5 Quick Tips episodes are designed to be shorter and right to the point. We cover things photographers want to know about and this time it's all about getting the right camera bag and there are bound to be some things you just haven't thought about. Enjoy!
