This week the Deadpod stays right in Jersey City, for this wonderful show from August of 1976. This show too, took place at Roosevelt Stadium on August 4, 1976. We start out with a long, dreamy 'Sugaree' - clocking in at over 14 minutes. Jerry is in good voice at this show, and you will notice that Phil is quite up front in this recording as well. These songs are all played at the slower pace characteristic of 1976, but I find the recording as well as the ensemble work quite pleasing. Other highlights for me include a lovely 'Row Jimmy' and a sweet 'Looks like Rain', Donna's voice here is quite lovely and compliments Bobby so well. 'Loser' is a personal favorite, always. A rockin' 'Music Never Stops' is followed by a great version of 'Scarlet Begonias'. This version, not yet coupled with 'Fire on the Mountain', displays some unique twists in this almost 15 minute version. QUOTES 01:08 "Kerik believes the killing is a graphic example of a decline in the quality of life in New York City. 'We're going right back to where we were,' he told Henry. 'This homicide is reminiscent of the things that went on back in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s, and people ignore it.'" 07:00 "Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said that Kays got the break of a lifetime when the judge sentenced him to home incarceration. But Kays remained committed to his self-defense argument. 'I never got no break I don't think,' Kays told reporters as he left the courtroom after his sentencing." 07:51 "The man was identified Friday as Delvin Pollard and he has been charged with assault with intent to kill, assault on a police officer and unlawful possession of a firearm. 'Looks like he tried to assassinate a couple of our police officers,' Newsham said." 10:27 "It wasn't all that popular nationally, in part because local departments had to pay the expenses for travel and weeks of lodging for their officers to get federal immigration agent training, but it sure was a hit in Maricopa County." ------------------------------ SUMMARY In this episode of the National Police Association Podcast, crime is growing rampant as Bernard Kerik blames anti-police policies for rising crime in New York and a convicted would-be cop killer also gets zero jail time. In the capital, a man who opened fire on two volunteer police officers lands behind bars and President Trump revives a plan to deputize local law enforcers in a bid against illegal immigration. ------------------------------ HIGHLIGHTS 00:26 Bernard Kerik slams liberal policies for spike in NY crime 03:17 Convicted attempted cop killer will not serve jail time 07:26 DC man opens fire on volunteer officers 09:27 Trump to deputize local law enforcement for immigration crackdown ------------------------------ RESOURCES http://nationalpolice.org/

Here's a pretty little set to send out the month of May in style.. This one comes to us form May 17th, 1978 at the Uptown theater in Chicago Illinois. This one starts with the first ever 'Mississipi-Half Step'>'Franklin's Tower' combo, and one that showcases some really nice licks from Mr. Garcia (and I should add some very nice work from Mr. Weir as well). The next two are Bobby's - 'Me and My Uncle' into a tight 'Big River'. Lovely versions of 'It Must Have Been The Roses' and 'Looks like Rain' showcase the more laid back side of the Dead as well as what Donna Jean could add in terms of backing vocals. A rolling "Tennessee Jed' follows, with Keith adding some nice color and Jerry adding some spirited vocals to make for a real good time. Bobby encourages the crowd to wish Mickey and Billy a Happy Birthday.... then they play a full on Funiculi Funicula... They close with a nice 'Lazy Lightnin'>Supplication'... Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 5/17/78 - Wednesday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:24]> Franklin's Tower [14:19] ; Me And My Uncle [3:04] > Big River [5:44] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [6:53] ; Looks Like Rain [9:05] ; Tennessee Jed [8:57] ; Funiculi Funicula [1:25] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:20] > Supplication [6:38] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod053119.mp3 As always, I want to acknowledge and thank the kind folks whose support makes the Deadpod possible.. This week we go back to the start of a legendary run that took place in the Spring of 1972, in New York City at the Academy of Music on March 21st. Off and on there are a few sonic problems with the tape - Garcia's vocals are buried in the opening 'Bertha' and there is a hum here and there, but overall well worth a listen. Garcia is on fire throughout and while some of the songs are still being developed the band is clearly evolving toward the Europe 72 sound you are probably very familiar with. Love the 'Playing In The Band' one of the first versions with some really out there jamming after the first verses. 'Looks like Rain' features Garcia on slide guitar and Pigpen is fabulous throughout. 'Cumberland Blues' is simply explosive. Grateful Dead Academy of Music New York, NY 3/21/72 - Tuesday One Bertha ; Black Throated Wind ; Sugaree ; Next Time You See Me ; Greatest Story Ever Told ; Loser ; Mr. Charlie ; Looks Like Rain ; Tennessee Jed ; Playing In The Band ; You Win Again ; Cumberland Blues ; Chinatown Shuffle ; El Paso ; Good Lovin' > Casey Jones You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031618.mp3 Hope you enjoy this week's Deadpod. My thanks for your support!
I think this is a real barnburner.. a date in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium in January of 1978. When you look at the set list and see that Minglewood is the opener you might dismiss this set, but don't.. give it a listen .. you can tell right away that Jerry is going to fire this thing up. A nice 'Dire Wolf' follows.. and then a sweet 'Looks like Rain' with nice Donna backing vocals. This matrix tape is nice and bright for the most part and really puts you there at the show.. Big River follows and goes into El Paso for one of the rarer segues - not sure if they ever did this combo in this order before or since.. Brown -Eyed Women and an outstanding Let It Grow close this first set.. we'll listen to the second set next week.. Grateful Dead Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, CA 1/11/78 - Wednesday One New Minglewood Blues [5:16] ; Dire Wolf [3:41] ; Looks Like Rain [7:54] ; They Love Each Other [6:48] ; Big River [5:47] > El Paso [4:03] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:44] ; Let It Grow [11:31] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011516.mp3 Thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod, as well as your comments and requests.
Happy New Year! Well close enough ;) that said I decided to bring out one of the band's famous NYE performances for this week's (and next week's) Deadpod. This is from 12/31/79 at the Oakland Auditorium Arena in Oakland CA. While many would argue that this was not the best show of this NYE run (after all 12/28/79 was released as Road Trips Vol 3 #1, and 12/26/79 was Dick's Picks #5) there is still something magical about these NYE performances. This week we will listen to set 1, then sets 2 and 3 next week. Set one starts off strong with a great Jack Straw (listen to what sounds like the reference to Clive Davis of Arista Records in the "We used to sing for silver.. line :) Jack Straw flows into a big Franklin's Tower, albeit Jerry blows more than one lyric here.. Other highlights in this first set include a very nice 'Looks like Rain' and a rockin' Promised Land which closes out set 1... Grateful Dead Oakland Auditorium Oakland, CA 12/31/79 - Monday Set One Jack Straw [6:05] > Franklin's Tower [16:53] ; Mama Tried [2:36] > Mexicali Blues [4:42] ; Tennessee Jed [8:40] ; Looks Like Rain [8:09] > Alabama Getaway [7:04] > The Promised Land [4:46] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122713.mp3 Thank you for listening to the Deadpod in 2013, and I look forward to the shows to come in 2014! Thanks to those of you who have kindly contributed to the Deadpod that keeps us on the air! Happy New Year to all my friends! Be safe and happy!!
