Retail is enjoying a fintech Renaissance of sorts -- from BNPL and other new forms of payments to a maturation of the ecommerce checkout experience. Fast is building one-click checkout on merchant sites across the internet. Much like Uber made payments invisible, Fast is doing something similar for shopper identities. Creating accounts on sellers' sites has always been an impediment to the payment flow. Fast takes away that friction with an elegant solution that shares user information with merchants and also integrates to include SKU-level data. Allison Barr Allen is co-founder and COO of Fast. She joined Fast from Uber, where she was head of global product operations for the Money Team. As my guest on the podcast, Allison describes some of the challenges inherent in ecommerce payments. We chat about the opportunity to go both global in scale as well as niche down into specific industry solutions. Allison Barr Allen is my guest today on the Tearsheet Podcast.

St John Ambulance is facing a 'code black', with the service at peak capacity. Respiratory illnesses and sickness in its own ranks is piling the pressure on too. Last week alone there was an 11 percent jump in 111 calls, and a 7 percent increase in ambulance responses. That is compared to what is expected during the winter months. Dan Ohs, St John deputy chief executive for ambulance operations, says they have had to stand up a special emergency command centre to deal with demand.
Zachary Karabell, president of River Twice Capital, says that short-term bottlenecks and supply-chain issues are not systemic inflation, and while he foresees inflationary spikes, he does not believe that long-term upward price pressure is about to change the broad economic picture. In a wide-ranging Big Interview, he notes that the global economy could see a series of rolling recoveries, leading to repeated cycles of good news as the world re-opens from the pandemic. Also on the show, Catherine Golladay of Charles Schwab and Co. discusses the latest 401k Participant Survey, in which Americans discuss just how much money they believe they must amass to live out their days comfortably, Chuck answers an audience question on passive investing and, in the Market Call, Bryan Koslow of Clarus Group talks about the exchange-traded funds he favors now.

Often worn by influential women including Michelle Obama on the red carpet, 12-year-old fashion brand Sachin & Babi is best known for its eveningwear. But luckily, prior to the pandemic and the mass cancelation of formal events, founders and married couple Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia had started to expand their product focus. “For the last three years, we've been looking at the business to see how we can make it a little bit more 'all things occasion,' [for] day or evening,” Babi Ahluwalia said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. “We made a deliberate attempt at [around] the start of 2019 to showcase how you could wear certain pieces of clothing during the day. [So] that gradual shift had started. And the pandemic helped us to push it a little further, faster.” Now, Sachin & Babi customers can shop styles from linen shorts to peasant blouses. What also changed during the pandemic was the brand's sales-channel split, moving from 60% wholesale to 60% DTC e-commerce sales. “It's [all] such a shift at the moment, and every month is a different game,” said Babi Ahluwalia. “So here we are, weathering the storm of fashion.” In addition, she spoke about the dwindling importance of fashion week, as it stands; the future of formalwear; and the way she and Sachin Ahluwalia were able to get a second fashion company, The Good Kloth Company, off the ground mid-pandemic.

Alan Gayle, president of Via Nova Investment Management, says that the light at the end of the pandemic's tunnel is getting brighter and that as conditions improve the astronomically high expectations for economic growth keep moving higher, as do the already heightened expectations for Standard and Poor's 500 earnings. 'The overriding theme,' Gayle says, 'is that the fundamentals continue to improve,' creating the proverbial rising tide that is lifting all boats. Also on the show, Brian Dress of Left Brain Investment Research discusses what growth investors should be thinking now that volatility has made the ride much bumpier, and Ted Rossman of CredtCards.com covers a new survey showing that many parents helped their children get through the pandemic financially, but to the detriment of their own finances. In the Market Call, Andre Weisbrod of Quantum Financial Advisors makes his debut on the show discussing stocks and ETFs.

Rep. One 'coyote,' in the evening, she brought in two young boys, [ages] 7 and 10, and five girls, 11 to 17," he says."None of them were related. They were being overwhelmed. They have run out of resources," the Arizona Republican adds.A "coyote" is a slang term for a person who smuggles illegal immigrants across the U.S.-Mexico border.Gosar also discusses Arizona Gov. A cash-strapped cafe in Auckland that provides meals and outreach to people experiencing homelessness have been saved after a surge of community support. Lifewise's Merge Cafe on Karangahape Road was about $60,000 short in funding, after Covid-19 cancelled their annual fundraiser - Auckland's Big Sleep Out. Merge has been a space where customers can buy a meal for themselves and someone else at the same time. The pay-it-forward system helps provide for those customers experiencing hardship. But for months the cafe had been running at a loss after Covid-19 lockdowns meant fundraising events were cancelled, and there have been fewer paying customers in the CBD. After sharing their story at the beginning of March, the fundraising response was overwhelming, Merge's manager Manu Kahlon told Checkpoint. Hundreds of businesses are hanging on for New Zealand and Australia to establish a quarantine-free travel arrangement, Auckland Airport's chief executive says. There have been months of negotiations between the two countries, but nothing has quite got off the ground, with borders slamming shut after news of community Covid-19 cases. Across the ditch some states have allowed New Zealanders in without quarantining - but New Zealand has not returned the favour. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says Australia moved the goalposts which has exposed more complications. Now it appears Australia is looking to a new dance partner - Singapore - with reports suggesting the pair could have its own bubble up and flying by July. Auckland Airport chief executive Adrian Littlewood told Checkpoint it is a real risk New Zealand could miss out altogether.

In this week's episode, Lucinda talks you through the ways in which you can better prepare for remote appraisals. Also, Lucinda gives practical guidance on how to evaluate fairly in what has been the most abnormal of years. KEY TAKEAWAYS Indeed, remote working has thrown up many challenges, including wellbeing, home schooling, or remote working itself. In many cases, we have spent more time at home than we have in the office. Certainly, we must consider how different the last year has been in terms other than geography. Many factors are actually the same, but simply feel different. Without clear objectives, or diluted milestones due to geography, it can be increasingly difficult to assess or appraise performance. Therefore, we must look to other markers. Furthermore, behavioural evidence is increasingly important for organisations, and yet without face to face contact, many find it difficult to assess this. But even when working remotely, we still have a sense of interaction.
