Pearl Jam found time after No Code to take a bit of a breather during 1997 to get out of the spotlight, recalibrate and record their next record Yield. The tours that had been utilized without the usage of Ticketmaster were put on pause for the year, but they found a way to get a couple shows in with the help of rock 'n' roll titans, The Rolling Stones. For four dates in November, Pearl Jam opened for the Stones in Oakland playing hour-long sets and showcasing some brand new songs from the Yield record.  We continue this week with the second set from August 5, 1979 at Oakland California.  This set starts with a fine 'Scarlet>Fire' - a warning there is a cut in the Scarlet (sadly there are several on this tape but I feel that the show still deserves your attention). The transition to 'Fire' is wonderful, as is Garcia's solo there. 'Estimated' and 'Eyes of the World' follow, then we are treated with Hamza el-Din in Drums, and a nice transition into 'Not Fade Away'. As we sit here only mere weeks after Matt Cameron stepped down as Pearl Jam's drummer after 27 years, it's completely understandable to be a little bit anxious for what the future of this band holds. While Cameron has been a staple since taking over for Jack Irons in 1998, there were a very small handful of times that we got to witness the band perform shows without his presence. In 2022, Cameron had to pause on touring in order to deal with a positive covid test. The band had about 24 hours to scramble and plan with the knowledge that he wasn't going to be available, so in stepped three drummers to help - Josh Klinghoffer who had just joined the band a year prior and was opening the show with solo material, long time friend and bandmate of Jeff Ament's in RNDM, Richard Stuverud, and a lucky fan who was plucked out of the crowd to be involved with a once and a lifetime experience named Josh Arroyo. As Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's most recent collaboration, Sinners, is dominating the domestic and worldwide box office, we thought it would be a good time to look at their first project together, Fruitvale Station. Fruitvale is partially the telling of the tragic story of the killing of Oscar Grant in Oakland CA on New Year's Day 2009, but it's so much more. Beyond being a mere recreation of events and the conveying of the awful facts, the film is a beautiful portrait of a young man who is struggling against a system that is set against him and his own difficulties. In addition to being a star making vehicle for Michael B. Jordan, the film features incredible performances from Melonie Diaz, Octavia Spencer, and Ariana Neal. Coogler and co. received a lot of critical praise for the film which set him up to helm massive projects like Creed and the Black Panther movies for Marvel.
