Snow White? More like “s'no successful MOVIE!” I tell you about a bunch of movies in the pipeline; some good, some bad. (Mostly bad) I went to see Refused at the historic Shrine Auditorium, and also took a gander at the house that Bugsy got his eyeball blown out in. I had a myriad of thoughts about both.
It's Awards Season yet again. Here on the Holmes Movies Podcast that means, it is time for the Alternative Oscars episodes! It was held March 25th 1991 (the year of Anders's birth) at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. It was hosted by Billy Crystal.Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves, which went head to head with Martin Scorsese's film Goodfellas, won 7 Oscars out of the 12 nominations it got. It was also the year Kathy Bates won a Best Actress Oscar for her mesmerising performance in Misery. Ghost, starring Demi Moore, went home with two Oscars. One for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Whoopi Goldberg. How do you think we would have done things that night? Listen here to find out. Det är januari 1998 och just i år är intresset för den annars lite sömniga kategorin årets latin extra stort.– Now you think after 25 years, the American Music Awards would have seen it all. But something really unusual happened in this category.– For the first time ever a father and son, Julio and Enrique, are competing for the same award.22-åriga Enrique är märkbart nervös, där han sitter och svettas bredvid sin mamma i en av de röda bänkraderna. – It's really a tight race. So let's take a look at the three favorite artist for latin artist.Huruvida pappa Julio, vars smokingklädda ryggtavla tornar upp sig några rader längre fram, är lika nervös är svårt att avgöra. Men faktum är att far och son inte pratat med varandra på över ett år.– And the winner is Julio Iglesias!Med ett vant leende kliver den legendariske smörsångaren fram till mikrofonen.– Well, this is funny because, you know when they tell you that your son is against you in competition, you feel a little like, eh, your brain is in another place, because I adore my kids. Kamerateamet missar inte chansen att zooma in på Enrique som sitter och gapar i sin stol. Avgudad är det sista han känt sig av sin framgångsrike far. – And more than anything, to tell my son, and my new sons, that as much I will be on a stage, as much I will compete with them. Thank you so much.Medverkande: Anders Bagge och Margret AtladottirProgrammet är gjort av Joanna Korbutiak i december 2024Producent Robin JonssonExekutiv producent Lars TruedsonSlutmix Fredrik NilssonProgramledare Siri HillP3 Musikdokumentär produceras av Tredje Statsmakten MediaLjudklippen i programmet kommer från VH1 Behind the Music (VH1, 2011), Sábado Gigante (Televisa Univision, 1995), American Music Awards (1998), Eurovision Song Contest (1970), RTVE (1982), La movida del verano (Telefe, 1996), ZTV (1999), The Howard Stern Show (WRX, 2000), CNN (2001), Making The Video (MTV, 2001), Al Rojo Vivo (Telemundo, 2014) och youtubekontot Nathan Fernandez.

"Reflecting on the Grateful Dead's Capitol Theatre Shows and Toby Keith smoking with Willie Nelson"Larry Michigan discusses the Grateful Dead's historic show at the Capitol Theatre on February 19, 1971. Larry reminisces about the atmosphere of the venue and the significance of the performance, highlighting the debut of several iconic Dead songs. The discussion delves into the band's evolving musical style, particularly the transition from psychedelic blues to Americana influences. He explores the historical context surrounding the show, including Mickey Hart's departure from the band and the impact of manager Lenny Hart's embezzlement. He also touches upon the significance of the show's release in the "From the Vault" series and discuss other notable releases in the Dead's catalog. Additionally, Larry provides updates on Bob Weir and Wolf Brothers' postponed performances with the National Symphony Orchestra and share news about upcoming music releases. Grateful DeadFebruary 19, 1971 (53 years ago)Capitol TheatrePort Chester, NYGrateful Dead Live at Capitol Theatre on 1971-02-19 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive The second of the legendary six night run at the Capitol Theatre in late February, 1971:Feb. 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, and 24 INTRO: Loser Track #3 2:55 – 4:24 Hunter/Garcia tune that was released on “Garcia”, Jerry's first solo album, in January, 1972, the last song on side one of the album. It was a standard first set tune, part of a rotating number of Jerry first set ballads including Candyman, It Must Have Been The Roses, High Time, Row Jimmy, To Lay Me Down and others. A very sweet melodic tune that tells a great story by way of a beautiful piece of music. SECOND time playedPlayed a total of 353 timesFirst time: “Last”night 2.18.71Last: June 28, 1995, The Palace of Auburn Hills, outside Detroit THIS SHOW: Last year we covered the Feb. 18th show famous as the debut for Bertha, Greatest Story, Loser, Wharf Rat and Playin In The Band and the Beautiful Jam out of Wharf Rat and back into Dark Star. It was also Mickey's last show before his almost three year hiatus before he returned for the final 1974 show before the band's 1975 year off February 19th show is just as historical: The band's first show without Mickey since he joined the band in 1967. Many people theorize that this was Mickey's response to his father, Lenny Hart who was the band's manager stealing almost $155,000 of the band's assets before disappearing. Although he was eventually located by a private detective hired by the band and arrested in San Diego on July 26, 1971, convicted and spent six months in jail, the money was never returned. The song, “He's Gone” is based on Lenny Hart's embezzlement and disappearance. Ashamed by his father's actions, Mickey left the band after the 2.18.71 Capitol Theater show returning full time in 1975. Lenny died of natural causes on Feb. 2, 1975. According to Dennis McNally, "Mickey went to the funeral home, cleared the room, took out the snakewood sticks that had been his inheritance, played a traditional rudimental drum piece, "The Downfall of Paris" on Lenny's coffin, and split." Starting with this show, the band became a very lean mean fighting machine with just five members (Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Bill and Pig) until Keith jointed the band seven months later in September. On this night, the band played the five songs debuted the night before and debuted Deal and Birdsong. Pig also has a strong showing this night leading the band through four standouts: Hurts Me Too Smokestack Lightning: the third to last time it would be played with Pig in the band Easy Wind: the second to last time it would be played without Pig in the band Good Lovin This really marked the beginning of the band's hard shift away from psychedelic blues (Primal Dead) to the more Americana style music that began with Workingman's and American Beauty. Within a year, Pig would be very ill with just enough energy left for the Europe '72 tour. But this night, he was rocking the house like only he could do. Here is the first of his four featured songs: SHOW No. 1: Hurts Me Too Track # 5 2:08 – 3:42 Great showcase number for Pig featuring his singing and harp playing. We got just a bit of Jerry's lead but all this great music is too long to fit into one clip – don't want Dan getting mad at me! "It Hurts Me Too" is a blues standard that is "one of the most interpreted blues [songs]".[1] First recorded in 1940 by Tampa Red in Chicago, the song is a mid-tempo eight-bar blues that features slide guitar. It borrows from earlier blues songs and has been recorded by many artists. Release on May 10th with Tired of Your Reckless Ways on the B-side. In 1949, Tampa Red recorded a variation of "It Hurts Me Too", titled "When Things Go Wrong with You".[9] It was recast in the style of a Chicago blues, with electric guitar and a more up to date backing arrangement. The song was a hit and reached number nine on Billboard'sRhythm & Blues Records chart in 1949.[10] (The original "It Hurts Me Too" was released before Billboard or a similar reliable service began tracking such releases, so it is difficult to gauge which version was more popular, although the former's title won out over the latter's.) Although the song retained the refrain "When things go wrong, so wrong with you, it hurts me too", Tampa Red varied the rest of the lyrics somewhat. This would become the pattern for future versions, in which succeeding artists would interpret the song with some of their own lyrics. Noted covers: Elmore James Junior Wells Grateful Dead – with Pig singing the vocals. Was first released by the Dead on Europe '72 album. After Pig left the band, the song was retired. The Dead played the song a total of 59 times First: May 19, 1966 at the Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco Last: May 24, 1972 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London (last show of Europe '72 tour “FROM THE VAULT”: This entire show was released by the Dead as “Three From The Vault” in 2007. The “From The Vault” series, launched by the Band in 1991 with One From The Vault – August 13, 1975 at The Great American Music Hall, with first live performance of the songs from Blues For Allah. In 1992 the Dead released “Two From The Vault” – August 23 and 24, 1968 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Then, along came Dick Latvala and his Dead scene changing Dick's Picks series which was wildly popular, so much so that the In The Vault Series was put on hold. For 15 years. Until 2007 when they circled back to the original series of live releasees with Three From The Vault which features the same show we are talking about today from the Capitol Theatre. That was it for In The Vault releases. The Dead did have several other “Vault” like releases – multi-track recordings including Hundred Year Haul, Dozin' At The Knick, Fallout From the Phil Zone, Terrapin Station, Live At the Fillmore East 2.11.69, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Grateful Dead, Nightfall of Diamonds, Trucking Up To Buffalo and so many more. They just stopped calling them “From The Vault”. Dick's Picks, of course would go on to have a total of 36 releases, the last few releases coming after Dick's death in 1999. Which led into the still wildly popular Dave's Picks from David Lemieux who took over for Dick and now has 49 releases and still going strong. And “short” lived, but generally popular “Roadtrips” series. And all of the box sets that are all amazing but too numerous to name except for the Complete Recordings, the four-night run at the Fillmore West from Feb. 27 to March 2, 1969 – four shows with the band at the peak of Primal Dead, and Europe '72 which consists of the live recordings for all of the shows on that tour. Another milestone for the Dead in terms of their ever expanding reputation for Jam Band, psychedelic, and amazing song catalogue, even at that “early” stage of the band's existence. SHOW No. 2: Playin In The Band Track # 7 2:23 – 4:05 By: Weir and Hunter "Playing in the Band" is a song by the Grateful Dead. The lyrics were written by Robert Hunter and rhythm guitaristBob Weir composed the music, with some assistance from percussionist Mickey Hart.[1] The song first emerged in embryonic form on the self-titled 1971 live albumGrateful Dead. It then appeared in a more polished form on Ace, Bob Weir's first solo album (which included every Grateful Dead member except Ron "Pigpen" McKernan). The instrumental break of "Playing in the Band" was introduced as early as the February 19, 1969 "Celestial Synapse" show at the Fillmore West, in which it appears somewhat indistinct from the preceding and following jams.[5] The completed song was also included on Mickey Hart's 1972 solo album Rolling Thunder within "The Main Ten", making reference to the song's time signature of 10/4. "The Main Ten" appears on Dick's Picks Volume 16, from their performance at the Fillmore West on November 8, 1969. On that set, it appears in the middle of "Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)".During a Bob Weir and Wolf Bros concert livestream on February 12, 2021, Weir credited David Crosby with the composition of the main riff. Weir stated, "David Crosby came up with the seminal lick... and then he left. We were out at Mickey's barn. So Mickey said, 'Make a song out of that'. Next day, I had it" It has since become one of the best-known Grateful Dead numbers and a standard part of their repertoire, usually as a second set pre-drums jumping off point for jams to who knows where. According to Deadbase X, it ranks fourth on the list of songs played most often in concert by the band with over 600 performances. If you download this show from Archive.org, and play this track, at the 3:20 mark during the mid-song jam, they get to the point where they would normally dive back in but instead, Bobby plays on for an almost additional 30 seconds and then just dives back in to the song. He is clearly still working it out. Over the course of the Europe '72 tour, it was played almost every night as Bobby finally worked it outThis is all really good stuff. SECOND time ever played 661 times (No. 1) First – “last: night's show, Feb. 18, 1971 Capitol Theatre Last: July 5, 1995 at Riverport Amphitheater, Maryland Heights, MO outside of St. Louis. SHOW No. 3: Greatest Story Ever Told (The Pump Song) Track #13 Start – 1:41 By Weir, Hart and Robert Hunter (some give credit to Rev. Gary Davis) Reverend Gary Davis, also Blind Gary Davis (born Gary D. Davis, April 30, 1896 – May 5, 1972),[1] was a blues and gospel singer who was also proficient on the banjo, guitar and harmonica. Born in Laurens, South Carolina and blind since infancy, Davis first performed professionally in the Piedmont blues scene of Durham, North Carolina in the 1930s, then converted to Christianity and became a minister. After moving to New York in the 1940s, Davis experienced a career rebirth as part of the American folk music revival that peaked during the 1960s. Davis' most notable recordings include "Samson and Delilah"[2] and "Death Don't Have No Mercy" Released on:AceRolling Thunder, as "The Pump Song"Dead SetDick's Pick's, vol. 6Europe '72 box setLots of other releases Per Hunter: "Also known as "Pumpman" and "Moses"--I wrote this to the rhythm of the pump in Mickey Hart's well." Released on Ace on May 1, 1972 First song on the album with Bobby setting a rocking tone Another tune that was played almost every night of and refined during the Europe '72 tour 283 times First: “last night” 2.18.71 Last: June 27, 1995 at the Palace at Auburn Hills outside Detroit SHOW No. 4: Bird Song Track #15 :42 – 2:15 By Garcia and Hunter Second song on Garcia Robert Hunter originally wrote the song as a tribute for Janis Joplin. Phil Lesh now sings "All I know is something like a bird within him sang", transfering it Jerry Garcia instead A regular for the Dead, and still played by Dead and Co., Bobby and Phil and Friends. Beautiful song, even for the fist time you know it's going to be special. Played 301 tines First: This is it! Last: June 30, 1995 at Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh, PA OUTRO: Deal Track #17 Start – 1:33 May 16, 2023 by Chris Huber of Chill One of the Grateful Dead's live staples, and many gambling songs is the Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia collaboration, “Deal”. First performed on February 19th, 1971, the song was in regular rotation until the end, both for the Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band.“Deal” saw studio release as the opening track to Jerry Garcia's 1972 debut solo album, Garcia, which also contained several other classic Grateful Dead live songs including “Sugaree”, “Bird Song”, “Loser”, and “The Wheel. Although it would move around a bit in the set list early on, this debut version is consistent with the ultimate tradition of the song closing out the first set. Even in JGB sets it was a first set closer. And would always leave you waiting through the break to see how they were going to kick off the second set and keep the show moving along. For a first time played, this version stays true to the version we all know and love from a few years later. Barbie is a 2023 American fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.[6] Based on the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, and follows the two on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis. The film also features an ensemble cast that includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. A live-action Barbie film was announced in September 2009 by Universal Pictures with Laurence Mark producing. Development began in April 2014, when Sony Pictures acquired the film rights. Following multiple writer and director changes and the casting of Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway as Barbie, the rights were transferred to Warner Bros. Pictures in October 2018. Robbie was cast in 2019, and Gerwig was announced as director and co-writer with Baumbach in 2021. The rest of the cast were announced in early 2022. Filming took place primarily at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in England and on the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles from March to July 2022. Barbie premiered at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on July 9, 2023, and was theatrically released in the United States on July 21, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures. Its simultaneous release with Oppenheimer led to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon on social media, which encouraged audiences to see both films as a double feature. The film received positive reviews, and has grossed $382 million worldwide. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

Tread Perilously's summer Grab Bag month continues with its first look back at Space: Above and Beyond -- an episode called "Level of Necessity." When an operation on planet Daedelus ends with heavy casualties, Lt. Colonel McQueen notes Damphousse's "anomalous intuition" for saving the 58th Squadron. The notation in his mission report attracts the attention of Colonel Matthew Burke, chief of the largely-discredited Psy-Ops department. He's convinced Damphousse's intuition is the proof of precognitive abilities he's been looking for and arranges for the squad to return to Daedelus for a hit-and-run mission. Will putting the grunt in danger unlock the secret powers of her mind? And will anyone survive their fifth trip to the alien-controlled world? Erik and Justin can't get over the episode's notion that lovable character actor Richard Kind can play a heavy. The pair also recall the monthly Comic Book & Science-Fiction Convention at the Shrine Auditorium. Erik's doppelganger ends up part of the discussion. The cast of Space: Above and Beyond prove to be knock-offs, off-brands, and potentially the greatest problem with the series as a whole. Erik and Justin attempt to recast Colonel Matthew Burke. Dan O'Bannon makes another unexpected appearance and Giovanni Ribisi becomes a psychic friend.

Host Scott Ramsay's longtime friend, Jim Harrington, had three amazing music stories, one being his ConcertZero, so Scott had to bring him in. For his ConcertZero, Jim saw Eric Burdon and the Animals, at the Shrine Auditorium, in the 60's. Speaking of the 60's, Jim sat second row for Jimi Hendrix, at The Forum, and may or may not have bootlegged that concert. Jim also tells a great story about a young Boston based band performing at Cal Jam in 1978.

Five miracles are documented in this book. In the end, Gary learned the true and innocent motive of his father's mistreatment and realized that his dad loved him after all. He only wanted to make his son tough and perfect. This story becomes an understanding, forgiving tribute to his old country American father. *** AND NOW *** The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.com The ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewspaper.com The ‘X' Zone Universe - www.xzoneuniverse.com

Arianna "Ari" Afsar is a composer, singer, actress, activist and entrepreneur. Ari wrote the music and lyrics for "Jeannette" -- a new musical about Jeannette Rankin, the first woman in Congress, which was recently workshopped at the Eugene O'Neill National Music Theatre Conference. Hamilton fans know Ari as the original Eliza in the Chicago production of the show. Before that she was on American Idol (at age 16!) and was crowned Miss California just a couple of years later. She has a degree in ethnomusicology with an emphasis on jazz vocals from UCLA. She went directly from college to writing music for TV and film. And she has been an activist her whole life, starting with founding an organization bringing teens to perform at senior centers, and more recently has done extensive work with the ACLU an other human rights causes, including working on The Women’s March and opening for Michelle Obama at the Shrine Auditorium. This is all in addition to her new EP, “Somewhere I thought I’d Be,” released this Spring, which is available on Apple Music, Spotify and everywhere else you buy or stream music.

In the late '90s, Julia needed to mix it up. Her romantic comedies were box office juggernauts, but she needed something more. After all, she didn't get into acting to pretend to love Dermot Mulroney. She needed an Oscar. Stepmom was not the film that would help Julia achieve her goal, but it got her on the path to Oscar glory. It also acclimated audiences to the idea that Julia could convincingly play a mother. In 2000, Julia landed her Oscar vehicle: Erin Brockovich, the true story of a hard-working legal assistant trying to take down a corporation for polluting the water. Big speeches! Female empowerment! A background role for Aaron Eckhart! Erin Brockovich had it all, and in March 2001, Julia marched up the steps of the Shrine Auditorium to collect her Oscar. Join us as we discuss Julia's chemistry with Ed Harris, whether Stepmom would be better if it were about lesbians, and the much-debated Roberts v. Burstyn Oscar showdown. Hosted by Michael (@cateblanchetttt), with Kevin Jacobsen (@kevin_jacobsen) and Drew Murray (@drew_murray12). Please let us know your thoughts on the new miniseries by leaving us a review on iTunes! The Oscars were stolen, the Oscars were stolen! The 72nd Academy Awards got off to an inauspicious start when over 50 Oscar statuettes went missing. But for the Oscars that were handed out at the Shrine Auditorium, several went to American Beauty, [redacted] won Best Actor for American Beauty, and Hilary Swank won Best Actress for Boys Don’t Cry. Meryl, meanwhile, was nominated for her performance as a verbally abusive white lady who teaches young inner-city kids about the violin. Join us as we discuss one of the greatest best supporting actor lineups of all time, Angelina Jolie’s award-winning performance in Girl, Interrupted, and Cameron Diaz’s perm in Being John Malkovich. We're going bi-weekly in November with our interview with author, Jesse Jarnow. In episode 009 (Listen HERE) we talked about Jesse's background as a Dead Head and writer and how the two streams combined. Then we began tearing into a survey of the recorded history of 1967 Grateful Dead. That's where our conversation picks up this time. There's a fair bit of music left to discuss so we get right on into it. Segment 1: 1967-09-29 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA Golden Road > New Potato Caboose Segment 2: 1967-10-22 Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA Morning Dew, Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment Segment 3: 1967-11-11 Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA Alligator > Caution (Do Not Step On The Tracks) 1967-11-14 American Studios Dark Star It was a pleasure chatting with Jesse and whipping this show together with him so I hope you all enjoy it. I strongly encourage you to check out his books:Big Day Coming: Yo La Tengo And The Rise Of Indie Rock (amazon) and Heads: A Biography Of Psychedelic America (amazon). This week's Deadpod features the second set from October 15th, 1976 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. I think this set has several very interesting moments. The first is the fine transition from the opening 'Eyes of the World' to 'The Music Never Stopped'. This was a the only time they ever played these two in this order, but I wonder why when listening to this performance. A long He's Gone leads into a short drums but then a mighty 'Other One'. The 'Comes A Time' that follows is one of the best, and probably the highlight of the set. A great 'Franklin's Tower->Sugar Magnolia' which closes the set is marred a bit by the fact that we only have the audience tape here. I hope you enjoy this performance from the Fall of 1976.. Grateful Dead Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, CA 10/15/76 - Friday Two Eyes Of The World [10:05] > The Music Never Stopped [5:54] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [6:26] % Samson And Delilah [6:40] % He's Gone [14:30] > Drums [5:12] > The Other One [13:27] > Comes A Time [10:08] > Franklin's Tower [12:22] > Sugar Magnolia [8:24] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102116.mp3 My thanks for your support of the Deadpod.
How about a show this week from 40 years ago out in Southern California? The boys' first trip back since their 'retirement' found them playing a pair of shows in L.A. at the Shrine Auditorium. Despite some heavy handed law enforcement, they delivered a solid performance, especially here on the 2nd night - October 15th, 1976. The first set which we feature this week, starts off with a surprisingly good 'Might As Well' - I especially enjoyed the ending jams! The set is consistently well played. I always love 'Loser' - Jerry's guitar has that plaintive wail that is just perfect. I also enjoyed Keith's piano throughout. 'Bertha' has an interesting pacing. 'Lazy Lightning->Supplication' is well played with some very nice licks especially in the transition and Jerry follows with a smokin' 'Sugaree' which is probably the highlight of this first set. They close with a nice 'Promised Land'.. Grateful Dead Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, CA 10/15/76 - Friday One Might As Well [5:58] % Mama Tried [2:36] % Row Jimmy [8:43] % It's All Over Now [5:50] % Loser [6:55] % New Minglewood Blues [4:55] % Bertha [6:09] % Lazy Lightnin' [3:18] > Supplication [5:37] % Sugaree [10:23] ; The Promised Land [3:59] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod101416.mp3 There are some audience patches here, but I don't believe they detract too much from the overall experience.. Thanks so much to the kind folks whose financial support makes the Deadpod possible. I hope you can enjoy the beauty of the world in this season of change.
I think this is a real barnburner.. a date in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium in January of 1978. When you look at the set list and see that Minglewood is the opener you might dismiss this set, but don't.. give it a listen .. you can tell right away that Jerry is going to fire this thing up. A nice 'Dire Wolf' follows.. and then a sweet 'Looks like Rain' with nice Donna backing vocals. This matrix tape is nice and bright for the most part and really puts you there at the show.. Big River follows and goes into El Paso for one of the rarer segues - not sure if they ever did this combo in this order before or since.. Brown -Eyed Women and an outstanding Let It Grow close this first set.. we'll listen to the second set next week.. Grateful Dead Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, CA 1/11/78 - Wednesday One New Minglewood Blues [5:16] ; Dire Wolf [3:41] ; Looks Like Rain [7:54] ; They Love Each Other [6:48] ; Big River [5:47] > El Paso [4:03] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:44] ; Let It Grow [11:31] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011516.mp3 Thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod, as well as your comments and requests.

Ask and you shall receive.. at least sometimes.. :) this week's Deadpod was the result of a request just posted on the Facebook page for 8/23/68.. this is a great performance and a pretty damm good tape.. it took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles CA the night before 'Two From The Vault' was recorded.. this features the Dead during one of their most creative periods. I just love the energy on this tape.. the opening Other One on this tape just crackles with it.. The Dark Star is full of Pigpen's funky organ in that characteristic early opening.. The Eleven is one of my favorite versions ever.. and there's really no words to describe the Alligator->Caution.. this is the highlight of an incredible show.. dig it. Grateful Dead Shrine Exhibition Hall, Los Angeles CA 8/23/68 Cryptical Envelopment [1:50] ->Drums [0:14] ->The Other One [4:08] ->Cryptical Envelopment [6:33];[0:06]%[0:03] ;Dark Star [15:26] ->Saint Stephen [4:39] ->The Eleven [10:53#]Death Don't Have No Mercy [#8:02] ;Alligator [3:40] ->Drums [6:54] ->Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks) [20:28] >Feedback [3:09] you can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042315.mp3 A very special thank you to the Sisters and Brothers who support the Deadpod.. City” “Brutal”, and “Great Train Robbery”, that track also played on a popular video game Grand Theft Auto. Sadly in 1990, due to ill health, Sanda “Puma” Jones passed away of cancer. They made an award winning music video for the track “Tip Of The Iceberg” featuring rap star Ice-T in 1992.This time there was a lawsuit brought amongst the group over the band's legal rights in Los Angeles county court. Derrick Simpson won.As the new melenium approached there came a new lead singer yet again from Waterhouse named Andrew “Bee's” Beckford. They released two albums. Unification was produced by King Jammy & Dynasty was produced by Fitzroy Francis & Duckie. They went on a worldwide tour featuring Sly and Robbie and had the famous producer Scientist as its road engineer. Andrew Bee's then went solo. In 2007 Duckie & Michael Rose reunited after twenty years. They performed in Jamaica and did one international tour and released the single “Dollars”. Of all the bands that tenor saxophone giant Stan Getz put together, this one is the least documented. It was formed in 1953 and worked on the East Coast but Stan bought a house in Los Angeles and took the band out there to play gigs in that area. They made three recording sessions for Norman Granz in July and August 1953 and we'll hear some of the results of those. They were first issued on Granz' Clef and Norgran labels as "Interpretations #1 #2 #3 by the Stan Getz Quinttet".The group consisted of Getz, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Johnny Williams, piano, Teddy Kotick on bass and the underrated drummer Frank Isola. Getz and Brookmeyer had a unique musical chemistry that allowed them to weave lines together and improvise collectively almost like a modern Dixieland band, Pianist Johnny Williams' contributions to this band are enormous as he plays with the stabbing intensity of Horace Silver and Russ Freeman but sounds like only himself. Bassist Teddy Kotick was Charlie Parker's favourite and Bird called Teddy..."my heartbeat". Frank Isola was a subtle and swinging drummer who kept everything light and very swinging.Jimmy Giuffre said that this quintet was Stan Getz' best band and you'll hear why. It broke up in the late Fall of 1953 because of a lack of work but Getz re-united it for his legendary Shrine Auditorium concert in November 1954.
