They Said I'd Never See My Kids Again. Got Them Back Sober w/ Ian Day | The Hopeaholics Podcast #349Ian Day grew up a standout athlete in a one-stoplight town in Indiana with one bar. His first drinks were sips of Miller Lite off his grandpa's lawn mower. By 17 he was smoking weed every day and panhandling in his high school hallways for lunch money because he'd spent it all on drugs. By 26 he was in Maricopa County tent jail in pink underwear and it was a country song in the jail chapel that finally broke him open for the first time in his life. He was told he'd never see his kids again and he got them back while fully sober. Ian shares his experience in the fork in the road between homeless, prison, and the halfway house, 90 meetings in 90 days, waking up at 4am to work a food bank before heading to a tattoo shop in the evenings, and what it looked like to slowly build a life he never thought was possible. Ian is now 8 years sober, owns Everlasting Inc. tattoo shop in Phoenix next door to a sober lounge, goes into intake prison on Monday mornings, and is raising his kids with his wife, Christin DayFollow the Hopeaholics on our Socials:https://www.instagram.com/thehopeaholics https://linktr.ee/thehopeaholicsGo to www.Wolfpak.com today and support our sponsors. With the upcoming Midterm elections and the balance of power in Congress up for grabs, people are concerned that the Trump administration will meddle in election results. On today's show, guest host Tony Castañeda speaks with election expert Stephen Richer, who says we should have confidence in the free and fair elections process that our local election officials oversee. In Richer's recent article for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, he reaffirms the 2020 presidential election results in Wisconsin. There were several post-election audits that found no cheating or mass fraud. But Richer's criticism of a Trump supporting group's audit of the 2020 Maricopa County election results earned him the ire of the President and MAGA supporters. There are real concerns coming from the federal government, from Trump's executive orders on election administration that are held up in the courts to the scaling back of cyber security services that are provided to election administrators. Richer says that the success and security of primary elections this year is a good sign, and he encourages listeners to get involved as temporary election workers, share facts with their friends and family, and reach out to election administrators if you have concerns. At the end of the day, election officials are your neighbors, and we should be concerned not only by the lack of trust in free and fair elections but by the lack of trust in our communities. Stephen Richer is a Fellow and Lecturer at the Harvard Kennedy School, Legal Fellow at the Cato Institute, former elected Republican in Maricopa County, and former lawyer. He's also on the board of the Democracy Defenders Action. Featured image of a ballot machine via Flickr (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0). Did you enjoy this story? Early tallies for the midterm primaries show that Arizona Republicans have put their trust in MAGA-style candidates for the top three spots on the November ballot. For the most part, the primary races were decided soon after an unexpectedly smooth election day. Voting in Maricopa County, a hotbed for election denialism and backbiting over election responsibilities, went off without any major glitches. This was the 273rd meeting of the Green Grassroots Emergency Election Coalition Zoom call, hosted by Harvey Wasserman and featuring discussions on election protection and global citizenship. The meeting opened with Arthur Kanegis presenting his documentary film "The World Is My Country" about Gary Davis, a former Broadway actor who became the first official world citizen and advocated for global governance through the United Nations. The film highlighted how Davis's actions helped lead to the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The discussion then transitioned to election protection issues in Arizona, where John Brakey and Ken Bennett explained their concerns about the state's hand-count audit system, particularly how pre-selecting batches of ballots for verification could potentially compromise election security. They detailed how 80% of Arizona ballots are cast by mail, with Maricopa County (containing 2.9 million registered voters) being particularly significant for state elections. The conversation covered various aspects of voting infrastructure, including the use of paper ballots versus ballot marking devices, and the challenges in maintaining election security across different states with varying systems and regulations.

CannCon and Ashe in America take apart a Deseret News profile that positions Steven Richer, the former Maricopa County recorder behind the infamous "Drawer 3" ballot scandal, as the trusted Republican voice on why California's elections are secure. They walk through his claims about audits, fraud detection, and mail-in deadlines, pointing out that the very system he defends prioritizes ballot access over ballot accuracy. A philosophy clip on the structural impossibility of proving election fraud sparks a deeper conversation about why the design of the system, not any single data point, is the real evidence of intent. The bulk of the episode is dedicated to a detailed reaction to an interview with Nathan Taylor, cofounder of the Election Truth Alliance, where CannCon and Ashe scrutinize his heat map methodology comparing US elections to Russian vote-rigging patterns, question his claimed cybersecurity credentials, and point out that the interviewer never asked a single hard question. They close by noting that despite years of public invitations, groups like ETA still refuse to appear on the show, a pattern they argue reveals selective, partisan motives rather than genuine election truth seeking.

Shomari Jackson was raised in East St. Louis, but he spent most of his childhood and teen summers in Arizona visiting his dad. He went to college in Arizona, but as he puts it, "Arizona chewed him up and spit him out." He returned home, experienced some major life events, navigated mental health issues, and finally grappled with the questions that would move him forward: Who was he? What was he capable of? How had trauma (historical, generational, personal) affected him? And most importantly, how did he want to carry himself into the world? Shomari went on to complete both his bachelors and masters degrees, and he's been advocating for equitable change in Arizona ever since.Today, Shomari is the owner and executive director of The South Mountain W.O.R.K.S. Coalition, a nationally recognized substance use prevention organization that focuses on systems change and building resilient communities in South Phoenix and throughout Maricopa County. He is the 2021 recipient of the Arizona Innovation in Health Equity Award, and on this episode, he shares what it means to reshape systems of inequity and support communities with an equity lens.
