This week we're happy to present the second set from the band's performance back on March 22, 1973 at Utica New York. The set starts with a rockin' 'Big River' and then the early 'Wave That Flag' and 'Me & My Uncle' before getting down to business with a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. The heart of the set follows with long jazzy versions of  'Truckin', 'The Other One' and 'Eyes of the World'. 'China Doll' always offers a sweet soulful splashdown as they end the set with the 'Sugar Magnolia'  There were apparently 2 encores, but we only have one on tape, 'One More Saturday Night', nevertheless there is a heaping measure of prime Grateful Dead here, and I hope you enjoy..    Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/22/1973 - Thursday Two      Big River [4:20] Wave That Flag [5:27] Me And My Uncle [2:54] Here Comes Sunshine [9:09] Truckin' [13:56] > The Other One [19:21] > Eyes Of The World [15:01] > China Doll [6:21] Sugar Magnolia Encore      One More Saturday Night Casey Jones (Missing)  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032825.mp3   May March go out like a lamb for you :)

On this first Friday of 2025, we continue with the conclusion of the Grateful Dead's New Year's Eve concert from December 31, 1971 at Winterland in San Francisco.  A long, fun if somewhat sloppy at times show, the enjoyment the band was having is evident throughout.. After a Bill Graham intro they go into Truckin' then Billy really goes off as they go into a Other One jam, then quite interestingly enough into Me & My Uncle before going back into The Other One.. Some other highlights here include the first ever version of Big River, and the last Pigpen version of 'The Same Thing' which the band would not bring back for 20 years... There is some great high energy jamming in the 2nd half of the set, which apparently went on until 3:45 AM.   Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 12/31/1971 - Friday Two      Truckin' [8:45] > Drums [3:07] > The Other One Jam [6:01] > Me And My Uncle [2:50] > The Other One [10:19] Space [1:53] > Black Peter [8:38] Big River [3:32] The Same Thing [7:22] Ramble On Rose [5:45] Sugar Magnolia [6:42] Not Fade Away [6:09] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:08] > Not Fade Away [3:00] Encore      Casey Jones [5:24]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010325.mp3  My sincere thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!  Here's to a healthy and happy 2025!

Here's a bit of a Christmas present from the Deadpod - a great second set from December 12, 1973 at the Omni in Atlanta.  This features a fine combination of classic tunes and some unusual combos (see Mississipi Half-Step into Me & Bobby McGee, as well as Wharf Rat> Me & My Uncle>Eyes). All the songs here are first rate - the China >Rider is wonderful as is the GSET.. then we get a complete Weather Report Suite..Eyes of the World into Morning Dew is one for the ages..    Then, after this massive set, I've included the soundcheck for this show, which has some really fun versions and even some Holiday sounds! Hey Now! This week the Deadpod takes us to Portland Maine, for a show that took place at the Cumberland County Civic Center on September 17, 1982.  This 12 song first set is a concise reading of many of their standards. Brent and Phil are upfront in the mix and overall I find these quite enjoyable. There is a false start in 'Me & My Uncle' which is quite unusual, and we have 'Dupree's' 2 weeks in a row- I'm sure that's a Deadpod record ;)   Grateful Dead Cumberland County Civic Center Portland, ME 9/17/1982 - Friday One      Bertha [6:25] > The Promised Land [4:02] Candyman [6:31] > C C Rider [8:16] Althea [7:47] Me And My Uncle [3:15] > Big River [5:36] Dupree's Diamond Blues [5:48] It's All Over Now [7:04] West L.A. This week's second set from the August 6, 1971 at the Hollywood Paladium is a classic.  It opens with 'St. Stephan' - they'd only play this one five more times before 1976.. a nice 'Truckin' goes into drums, then they roar into 'The Other One' and segue flawlessly into 'Me & My Uncle' - the first time they tried this and it worked perfectly.. they then go back into the 'Other One' but if you listen you can hear a WRS prelude tease before they do... Things mellow a bit with 'Deal' but the rest of the set is just as intense with 'Sugar Magnolia' then a great 'Morning Dew' and Pigpen lets it loose with a 23 minute plus 'Lovelight'..      Grateful Dead Hollywood Palladium Hollywood, CA 8/6/1971 - Friday Two      Saint Stephen [6:16] Truckin' [6:50] > Drums [3:56] > The Other One [7:29] > Me And My Uncle [3:08] > The Other One [5:41] Deal [5:05] Sugar Magnolia [6:18] Morning Dew [10:42] Turn On Your Love Light [23:38]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081624.mp3 Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod!

This week we continue with a show from 52 years ago today - 7/26/72. We will pick up with the ending of set 1 then work into the second set..  We start with a sweet  'Playin' In the Band' - Donna is introduced before hand and its a fine start to this week's Deadpod. They close set one with ' Casey Jones'. Set 2 begins with a strong 'Promised Land' then goes into 'He's Gone' which had debuted only a few months before. 'Uncle' follows then 'You Win Again' which would only be played 2 more times before it was retired in September. A high energy 'Greatest Story' follows and we close this edition of the Deadpod with some fine Garcia work on 'Ramble on Rose'..   Grateful Dead Paramount Theater Portland, OR 7/26/1972 - Wednesday One (continued)     Playing In The Band [12:27] Casey Jones [4:48] Two      The Promised Land [2:58] He's Gone [8:46] Me And My Uncle [3:05] You Win Again [4:02] Greatest Story Ever Told [4:57] Ramble On Rose [6:09]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod072624.mp3  Stay tuned for the climax of this show on next week's Deadpod!   thank you for your kind support!

I think we have a good one to send you off on your Memorial Day weekend - this comes to us from May 30, 1980 at the Milwaukee Auditorium in Milwaukee Wisconsin.  The first set starts with a fine 'Jack Straw' - the first minute forty is supplied by an audience tape but hold on because the rest is a fine soundboard. The transition jams from Jack Straw to Franklin's Tower are off the chart.. Jerry is in fine form here.. as evidenced by the hot Uncle and Big River that follow...  They include a 'Passenger' here, without Donna of course, but still smokin'... then Brent does an early 'Easy to Love You'. They bring down the house with a set closing 'Music Never Stopped'.   Grateful Dead Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI 5/30/1980 - Friday One     Jack Straw [5:29] > Franklin's Tower [11:15] Me And My Uncle [3:06] > Big River [6:11] Friend Of The Devil [8:36] Passenger [5:10] Easy To Love You [3:29] Althea [8:31] The Music Never Stopped [7:45]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052424.mp3  I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day.. take a moment to pause and remember what the holiday is for..

This week we go to the wonderful Greek Theater in Berkeley California for the band's performance on May 21, 1982. I think this was one of the better years in terms of the band's history and this is not only a fine recording but a well-played set that I'm sure you'll enjoy.  The first set starts with a 'Bertha>Greatest Story' combo, one that was fairly new at the time. Jerry slows it down with a 'Friend of the Devil' but the 'Uncle'>'Big River' that follows benefits greatly from his nimble guitar. A nice 'Bird Song' flows into Bobby's 'CC Rider', then we have an excellent 'Althea', not only is Jerry in fine voice, but his delivery is just exactly perfect. Bob delivers a nice 'Looks like Rain' and they close with a boppin' 'Might as Well'.      Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/21/1982 - Friday One     Bertha [6:35] > Greatest Story Ever Told [3:50] Friend Of The Devil [8:44] Me And My Uncle [2:55] > Big River [5:09] Bird Song [10:45] > C C Rider [7:27] Althea [7:47] Looks Like Rain [7:35] Might As Well [4:01]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051024.mp3 Thank you friends for listening and for your kind support.

I think this week's Deadpod brings March in both as a lion and a lamb = this first set from Cleveland on March 3, 1981 has some great rockin' tunes and some sweet ballads to please the most discerning Deadhead.  Don't be put off by the start of 'Feel Like a Stranger' - the audience patch only lasts for a short bit - the rest of this tape is a fine sounding soundboard in which you can hear the interplay between the members most clearly.  A sweet 'Peggy O' follows then a fine 'Me & My Uncle' into 'Big River' highlighted by some nice Garcia work. That continues in the 'Bird Song' that follows.. and leads into 'Looks Like Rain'  -this one builds to a nice crescendo. The rockin' returns with a great 'Big Railroad Blues' - nice work here by Brent. A long 'Little Red Rooster' follows.. Brent adds some nice B3 work here. The set closing 'Deal' ramps things back up properly..    Grateful Dead Cleveland Music Hall Cleveland, OH 3/3/1981 - Tuesday One     Feel Like A Stranger [8:33] Peggy-O [7:49] Me And My Uncle [3:01] > Big River [5:16] Bird Song [11:08] > Looks Like Rain [7:47] Big Railroad Blues [4:50] Little Red Rooster [10:06] > Deal [7:22]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030124.mp3  All the best my friends....

This week the Deadpod goes back 51 years to February 15, 1973 when the Grateful Dead played a massive show in Madison Wisconsin. this first set clocks in at about 100 minute... it starts with a song they debuted about a week earlier 'Loose Lucy'. They are still warming up when they then 'Beat It On Down The Line'. Several favorites follow, but things really get rolling with a fine, up tempo 'Row Jimmy'. The highlights of the set follow, with a wonderful 'China Cat >I Know You Rider' and a jamming 'Playing In The Band'.   This week's Deadpod features a historic performance - it occurred on the night the band was 'busted down in New Orleans' - January 30, 1970 at The Warehouse in New Orleans, Louisiana. Also historic as it was the last show that Tom Constantin played in the Dead.. but aside from that this is a fine show and I think you'll enjoy hearing this very good tape..  The tape is missing part of the opening Casey Jones, nevertheless good vibes here and on the following 'Me & My Uncle'.. 'Black Peter' is wonderful.. I also think the 'High Time in this set is absolutely perfect. 'Cumberland Blues' is hot.. hotter than you think that song should be ;) and is there a better song to pull out here than 'Easy Wind'?  The 'Cryptical Envelopment>Other One>Cryptical' is hard driving Dead!  They do a sweet transition into 'Cosmic Charlie' - sadly this one is cut as well... .   Grateful Dead The Warehouse New Orleans, LA 1/30/1970 - Friday One - 1:33:00      Casey Jones [#1:27][0:47] Me And My Uncle [3:09][0:29] Black Peter [9:51][0:15] Hard To Handle [5:26][0:05]%[0:07] China Cat Sunflower [3:13] > Jam [2:34] > I Know You Rider [4:19] > High Time [6:25][0:15] Cumberland Blues [6:21][0:04]%[0:03] Easy Wind [10:13][0:12]%[0:10] Mama Tried [2:36] > Good Lovin' [1:49] > Drums [0:40] > Good Lovin' [5:26][0:16] Cryptical Envelopment [2:17] > Drums [5:22] > The Other One [9:41] > Cryptical Envelopment [9:10] > Cosmic Charlie [0:34#]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012624.mp3  Thank you for your kind support!  The days are getting brighter!

This week on the Deadpod I've decided to feature the second night from the historic 'From Egypt With Love' run at the Winterland in October of 1978. While the opening 'Sugaree' is patched for about the first minute, don't let that dissuade you this one- the sound is crystal clear throughout afterwards, and the band is listening to each other and the result is a dynamic, lovely evening of music.  Donna Jean in particular provides some lovely backing vocals on "Looks Like Rain' and 'Music Never Stopped'.  Jerry is on point here with several delicious solos as well.   Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 10/18/1978 - Wednesday      One      Sugaree [#13:32]   Me And My Uncle [3:06] > Big River [5:48]   Peggy-O [7:45]   Looks Like Rain [8:16]   Stagger Lee [6:15]   New Minglewood Blues [5:53]   Candyman [6:52]   The Music Never Stopped [8:06] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod100623.mp3    Thank you for your kind support.

The Fall of 1972 was an interesting transitional period for the Grateful Dead. They began to explore longer shows with more exploratory jamming. This week's Deadpod, from September 9th of that year, showcases some of these changes. In this week's first set, we have plenty of classic songs, as well as some intense jamming. Some of the highlights for me include the sweet 'Sugaree', 'Bird Song' and Keith's transitions in 'Black Throated Wind'. Of course I have to mention the almost 19 minute long 'Playin In the Band' - long a vehicle for exploration during this period. As you'll see next week, it was not alone in this show.      Grateful Dead Hollywood Palladium Hollywood, CA 9/9/1972 - Saturday      One     The Promised Land [3:02] Sugaree [7:04] Me And My Uncle [3:02] Bird Song [11:24] Black Throated Wind [6:32] Tennessee Jed [7:26] Mexicali Blues [3:30] Deal [4:42] Playing In The Band [18:25] Loser [6:44] Johnny B. We're stepping it up this week.. yes! believe it or not, this week's Deadpod is probably even hotter than last week's show from 1973! This one comes from May 25, 1974 at Santa Barbra California. A beautiful afternoon show that must have seemed to go on forever...  The first set starts with a U.S. Blues.. a great way to start a show and start this 13 song first set! The entire set is smoking hot, and it has a pedigree - as it comes from Dick Latvala's cassette, so the sound is great.  Some of the highlights include a wonderful 'Jack Straw', a stand alone 'Scarlet', Weir 'takes a bottle, cracks him in the jaw' on 'Me & My Uncle', but the true highlight of the set and probably the show is the mind-bending 'China Cat>I Know Your Rider' , in particular the great jamming in the transition - not to be missed. Happy Cinco de Mayo! As we roll into the first weekend in May, I wanted to bring out the customary tribute to the Kentucky Derby with a fine 'The Race Is On'. This show does that as well as pays homage to the new, fat,  'Here Comes Sunshine' release from Grateful Dead Productions (Here Comes Sunshine from Dead.net). This show does both, although it takes place in early spring of 1973, rather than in May.  This is a huge show - the first set alone has 17 songs that take over one hour and forty minutes of  prime Dead. There are too many highlights to mention. As most of you know I love the sound of the band during this period. I invite you to pay attention to Bill's work here - it really sparkles!   Of course there is 'The Race Is On', and a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. But I enjoy Donna on 'You Ain't Woman Enough', and just when you think that they must need a break after a fine 'China>Rider' they roll into a 15 minute 'Playin' In The Band' to close the set..    Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/21/1973 - Wednesday One     [1:39:37] Bertha [5:32] Me And My Uncle [2:57] Wave That Flag [5:30] Looks Like Rain [7:35] Tennessee Jed [7:34] Box Of Rain [4:46] You Ain't Woman Enough [2:59] Jack Straw [4:37] Row Jimmy [7:38] Beat It On Down The Line [2:58] Here Comes Sunshine [8:05] The Race Is On [2:44] Loser [6:33] El Paso [4:09] China Cat Sunflower [7:18] > I Know You Rider [4:31] Playing In The Band [15:11] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050523.mp3  We'll enjoy set 2 next week...  " "Well hop in the hack turn on the key Pop in the clutch let the wheels roll free Come on honey, let me sing them away Come on honey, let me sing them away Oh, honey, let me sing your blues away"

Well, I think that groundhog saw his shadow, but I've got a show for you this week that is sure to warm you up.. this one comes from way back in 1970 - from February 28, 1970 in San Francisco. While this was probably one long set, I'm going to play part 1 this week and part 2 next week.  The show starts with an unusual 'Lovelight' to open, and it has a different sound to it in this spot, a bit more uptempo from the start, but quite fun to hear. After going into a 'Me & My Uncle' and 'Cumberland Blues' Jerry announces that they want to bring things 'down' a bit with some acoustic numbers. The next three tunes are just lovely renditions of 'Monkey & The Engineer', 'Little Sadie' and 'Black Peter'. The rest of the set is electric, starting with a smoking 'China>Rider'. Jerry slows it down a bit again with 'High Time' but we'll end this week's Deadpod with the always delightful 'Dire Wolf'.  Grateful Dead Family Dog at the Great Highway San Francisco, CA 2/28/1970 - Saturday One Turn On Your Love Light [#12:47] > Me And My Uncle [3:02][0:11] Cumberland Blues [4:53][2:06] Monkey And The Engineer [1:40][0:27] Little Sadie [2:47] > Black Peter [8:35] Tuning [0:43] China Cat Sunflower [3:13] > Jam [3:09] > I Know You Rider [4:20] > High Time [6:35] > Dire Wolf [4:35][0:10]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod020323.mp3 Thanks for listening!

"Being summer, I took off my shirt...." well I'm not taking my shirt off but I am bringing you a summertime treat I think, with an excellent audience recording of the band's performance in Denver on July 14, 1981. As I listened to this tape it just struck me that the feeling of being there that a good audience recording gives you was perfect for this time of the year, when many of us have been lucky enough to experience some live music in person.. I do hope you have! This show has some excellent energy throughout, the Minglewood has a couple very nice Jerry solos, the 'Cassidy' is nicely paced, and leads into a sweet 'To Lay Me Down'.  Weir has some fun with 'Me & My Uncle' which is blistering.. as is the outstanding 'Big Railroad Blues'  The highlight of the set is the Birdsong>Sailor>Saint, however. It is only the the 14th electric birdsong since 9/15/73, and the only time that Sailor comes out of Birdsong. It is excellent.    Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 7/14/1981 - Tuesday One     Cold Rain And Snow [5:40] > New Minglewood Blues [6:41] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:00] ; Cassidy [5:05] ; To Lay Me Down [8:53] > Me And My Uncle [2:55]> Mexicali Blues [4:30] ; Big Railroad Blues [3:48] ; Little Red Rooster [8:23] ; Bird Song [11:48] > Lost Sailor [6:42] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:25] > Don't Ease Me In [3:06]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071522.mp3 Thanks for your kind support. This week's Deadpod is a short but very sweet show from June 7, 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. This week's first set is 'relatively' acoustic, that is the first two songs are acoustic, but Jerry uses an electric guitar and Weir acoustic on the remainder of the som et. Frdeadlists.com:  " David Nelson plays mandolin on Cold Jordan and Swing Low, and he and Marmaduke contribute backup vocals. Before Cumberland Blues Garcia says "we're gonna do a few semi-electric numbers. We've got a million new labels." There is a short cut at 2:48 of Cumberland. Marmaduke adds backup vocals to Me And My Uncle." This week's Deadpod is from a marvelous sounding tape (with one or two issues) from the Spring of 1971. This set has Phil all over it - I especially love his sound on 'Bertha'. Pigpen does a wonderful 'Next Time You See Me', and 'Hard to Handle' (although it has a very tragic tape flip that loses the end of the song). The boys are tight and their playing is crackling with energy.  No jazzy spacy jams here, but plenty of electric, down and dirty rock and roll. Hey Now! This week we will explore the first set from a great show that took place during a historic run at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester NY back on February 20, 1971. This was during the famous 'ESP' experiments, and it was also the second show without Mickey Hart who had left the band after the first show of this run.  This show contains a number of 'new' tunes (at the time) and you'll see that some have yet to be fully developed (Playin' in the Band for example).  However the band is tight, Pigpen is on and it is really a fine set. I especially love the ending of this set with the Cryptical>Drums>Other One>Wharf Rat     Grateful Dead Capitol Theater Port Chester, NY 2/20/71 - Saturday     One     Casey Jones [4:18] ; Me And My Uncle [3:10] ; Hard To Handle [7:38] ; Bertha [5:30] ; Playing In The Band [4:40] ; Bird Song [6:53] ; Big Boss Man [4:43] ; Cryptical Envelopment [1:53] > Drums [3:51] > The Other One [10:53] > Wharf Rat [6:58] ; Sugar Magnolia [5:15]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod021122.mp3  Thanks for listening and love and best wishes to all!

We head into the new year with a show from the Winter of 1979 - this comes to us from the Nassau Coliseum on January 11, 1979.  The first set starts off with a wonderful version of 'Sugaree' - Garcia sets the tone for this set right out of the gate.. some wonderful runs here. 'Me & My Uncle' and 'Big River' follows and the latter, in particular, delivers more Jerry magic. Things slow down a bit with a long 'Peggy-O', and Bobby does a nice 'Cassidy' to follow. 'Friend of the Devil' and the 'New New Minglewood Blues follow'. Donna does a rare version of 'From the Heart of Me', before they break into the crowd favorite 'Ramble on Rose'.  The highlight of the set, in my mind, follows with a smoking version of 'Jack Straw'. Despite Weir stepping on Garcia's incredible solo, this one is sure to please. Jerry heads into the break delivering a rocking 'Deal'.  Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 1/11/79 - Thursday One     Sugaree [13:50] ; Me And My Uncle [2:54] > Big River [6:20] ; Peggy-O [8:59] ; Cassidy [4:58] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:50] ; New Minglewood Blues [5:35] ; From The Heart Of Me [3:50] ; Ramble On Rose [8:01] ; Jack Straw [6:12] > Deal [6:13]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010722.mp3   check out Bobby's ad libbed lyrics in 'Jack Straw'...    Stay warm and healthy my friends, and thank you so much for your kind support..

This week we go back to some good ol' Grateful Dead from December 1970. The boys are young and full of spunk on this one as they run through some of their early numbers. Pigpen is in fine form here and the 'Hard to Handle' is classic. The 'Deep Elem' has a unique and very pleasant arrangement to my ears. 'Cumberland Blues' showcases Phil's talents as always and a great China>Rider could be the highlight of the set. Here's to cowboys, and here's to gold…"John often used to tell the story behind Me And My Uncle. Years ago he began receiving publishing royalties from a song on a Judy Collins record with which he was unfamiliar. It was titled Me And My Uncle. He called Judy to let her know of the mistake because he hadn't written any such song. She laughed and told him that about a year before, in Arizona after one of her concerts, they had a tequila night back at the hotel with Stephen Stills, Neil Young and a few others. They were running a blank cassette and John proceeded to write Me And My Uncle on the spot. The next day, John woke up to the tequila sunrise with no recollection of the songwriting incident. Judy kept the cassette from that evening and then, without informing John, recorded the song for her own record. Over the years the song was recorded by several people, and eventually became a standard of the Grateful Dead. John used to joke that, little by little, with each royalty check, the memory of writing the song would come back to him."Freight Train - Elizabeth Cotten Fallin' Rain - Neville BrothersBurnin' Streets - Joe Strummer & The MescalerosGoing Places - Paul WellerPure Smokey - George HarrisonThe Nearest Faraway Place - The Beach BoysThere's A Honky Tonk Angel (Who Will Take Me Back In) - Elvis PresleyA Song For You - Gram ParsonsWhen I Hold You In My Arms - Neil YoungBullet Proof Soul - SadeRanglin's Diamond - Ernest RanglinMe And My Uncle - John PhillipsTombstone Shadow - Creedence Clearwater RevivalBaby Ride Easy - Johnny Cash & June Carter CashFriendly Gates - Carlene RouthSomeone Like You - The KnittersWhen I Stop Loving You - Felice & Boudleaux BryantThis Girl's in Love with You - Aretha FranklinClose To You - Phyllis DillonLove Letters - Elvis Presley

I originally thought I would play Brent Mydland's last show with the band - 7/23/1990 - but at the last moment decided I would bring you something much happier - the famous soundcheck from the Watkins Glen festival that took place on July 27, 1973.  Long a favorite among Deadheads, you've likely heard this before - but this is one of those performances that deserve to be listened to again from time to time - like using that good china that is collecting dust in the cabinet. This is a fine recording of the complete soundcheck - including Bill Graham's introduction - that captures what made this band so exciting during this peak period of their evolution.  Only a few words are needed here as this will speak for itself.. listen to how animated Phil is right out of the gate - he drives that Promised Land and continues throughout! Bird Song has some wonderful moments where the band starts to take off into uncharted territory - a harbinger of things to come.  Of course the 'star' here is the jam following Uncle.. this is paradigmatic Grateful Dead - unexpected, new, never to be repeated. The 'Wharf Rat' that follows is just what is needed to bring things back to earth.. then !bang! 'Around and Around' to end things up...  Grateful Dead Grand Prix Racecourse Watkins Glen, NY 7/27/73 - Friday   One      The Promised Land ; Sugaree ; Mexicali Blues ; Bird Song ; Big River ; Tennessee Jed Two     Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo ; Me And My Uncle ; Jam > Wharf Rat ; Around And Around   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod072321.mp3    Enjoy.

This week we present the second set from the band's historic run at RFK Stadiuim in Washington D. C. the weekend of June 9, 1973.  This is a fine, long, wall-of-sound, show and it's no wonder that it ranked highly in Dick Latvala's estimation (https://gdsets.com/latvala/1973_06_09.jpg).  While there is some confusion over the exact start of this setlist, I'm choosing to include the Greatest Story Ever Told as the opener. The band then moves into an excellent China>Rider, although some have thought that Jerry was a bit too 'relaxed' in singing the 'wish I was a headlight' line. The 'He's Gone' that follows is slow and soulful, but the pace picks up in the 'Truckin' that follows. If you listen to the transition into the excellent 'Playin' In the Band' that follows you'll hear a nod to 'Here Comes Sunshine' .. while there is no drums/space in this set, the jam that happens in 'Playin' is an excellent substitute.  Of the rest of the set, 'Big River' is very hot, and the 'Eyes of the World' is just exactly perfect. The 'China Doll' that follows is soulful, to say the least. Sugar Magnolia follows, I'm not sure if that was an encore or whether they were simply exhausted on this hot, humid day in D.C.   Grateful Dead RFK Stadium Washington, DC 6/9/73 - Saturday Two      Greatest Story Ever Told China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; He's Gone [14:12] > Truckin' [12:09] > Playing In The Band [20:19#] ; Loser [6:07] ; Me And My Uncle [2:52] ; Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [6:36] ; Big River [4:15] ; Eyes Of The World [11:21] > China Doll [5:23] ; Sugar Magnolia [7:01#]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061821.mp3   Have a fabulous week! and thanks for your kind support!

Long considered a classic show, I decided to start off our November here on the Deadpod with this gem from 1972.. from November 19th in Houston Texas. While this tape does have some faults I think overall it is well worth a listen.. The band was originally scheduled to play this show with the Allman Brothers, but the tragic death of bassist Barry Oakley the prior week left them to fill the evening alone - and they more than did..  The opening 'Bertha' suffers from poor mixing but that clears up in time.. nice versions of Uncle, Sugaree and BIODTL follow but things heat up with a wonderful 'Bird Song'. A still relatively new 'Black-Throated Wind' is quite entertaining. Another highlight is one of the best versions of both 'Box of Rain' and 'Tomorrow is Forever'.. Of course the 20 minute long 'Playin' In The Band' is a highlight for any of us who enjoy the spaces the band explores..      Grateful Dead Hofheinz Pavilion - University of Houston Houston, TX 11/19/72 - Sunday     One     Bertha ; Me And My Uncle ; Sugaree [6:47] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:02] ; Bird Song [10:44] ; Black Throated Wind [6:28] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:10] ; Mexicali Blues [3:20] ; Box Of Rain [4:40] ; Tomorrow Is Forever [5:21] ; Big River [4:07] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:04] > I Know You Rider [4:46] ; Playing In The Band [20:12] ; Casey Jones [5:48]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod110620.mp3 Thank you for your support of the Deadpod !

We close out October.. and welcome Halloween :) with a great second set from October 21st, 1971 in Chicago. While this may be Keith Godchaux's second night of his tenure with the band, he sure doesn't sound tentative here - especially on his first 'Dark Star'! This one is made even more unusual when the band goes into 'Sittin' On Top of the World' then back into the Star.. (the first Sittin' since 11/5/70).The 'Brown Eyed Women' is only the 3rd time they've played it, and this is the second time for 'Ramble on Rose'.. The band is clearly stretching out and trying those new tunes that will come to perfection in the great shows of 1972.  An unusual 'St.Stephen' leads into 'Johnny B.Goode' as a double encore - they'd only play Stephen twice more in '71 before putting it on the shelf until its return in 1976.   Grateful Dead Auditorium Theatre Chicago, IL 10/21/71 - Thursday     Two     Casey Jones ; Me And My Uncle [2:48] ; Dark Star [15:09] > Sittin' On Top Of The World [3:16] > Dark Star [2:03] > Me And Bobby McGee [5:56] ; Brown Eyed Women ; Ramble On Rose [6:06] ; Sugar Magnolia [6:08] Encore     Saint Stephen [5:49] > Johnny B. This week we set the way-back machine to 1972, and travel to Waterbury CT, for a show the band played on September 23, 1972. The first set, which we will hear this week, while fairly standard for the period is still quite long compared to later day Dead sets.  The start off with a still-new 'Big River' and I think this is a fine opener, shame they didn't leave it here more often.. There are a passel of great standards here in the first set, including Sugaree, a speedy 'Friend of the Devil', a very nice 'China>Rider' and a wonderful 'Bird Song' (aren't all '72 Bird Songs' wonderful?).  There is some silly if unintelligible banter  before 'El Paso' and they boys leave us with one very exploratory jam in the set closing 'Playin' in the Band' - listen to how Garcia stretches this one out.      Grateful Dead Palace Theatre Waterbury, CT 9/23/72 - Saturday     posters     tickets, passes & laminates One - 1:36:00     Big River [4:41] ; Sugaree [7:21] ; Mexicali Blues [3:27] ; Friend Of The Devil [3:19] ; Black Throated Wind [6:41] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:36] > I Know You Rider [5:26] ; Me And My Uncle [2:58] ; Tennessee Jed [7:40] ; Jack Straw [4:53] ; Bird Song [10:11] ; El Paso [4:29] ; Deal [4:15] ; Playing In The Band [17:55]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091820.mp3  Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod!  "Seasons change and roses die... This week we travel to the home of the celebrated jumping frogs - Calavaras county - to bring you the band's performance from August 23, 1987.  I find this to be quite an enjoyable first set as it features many songs not often broken out, including a set opening 'Box of Rain'. The 'Jack Straw' and 'West LA' are both solid and well played. 'High Time' is really a pleasant surprise but the highlight of the set, when they really let loose, is when Carlos Santana, who opened for them, joins them on stage for 'Iko Iko' and 'All Along the Watchtower'.  You can really feel them open up as Jerry and Carlos trade licks on these two standards. We'll listen to set two next week   Grateful Dead Calavaras County Fairgrounds Angel's Camp, CA 8/23/87 - Sunday     One     Box Of Rain [4:28] ; Jack Straw [5:21] ; West L.A.  Here's a long and strong first set from that great year in Dead history - 1972. This comes from Sacramento California from August 12, 1972. This is an especially long first set with some nice surprises therein. 'Sugaree' is tinged with some bluesy elements, and I find it quite enjoyable. There's some interesting chatter to the crowd before 'Uncle' :) and the 'Bird Song' that follows is nicely melodic. Another highlight of this set is the 'Playin' In the Band' which has some fine improvisational spaces in it. I do have to warn you that there is a brutal cut in 'El Paso' which then leads into an cut into 'Tennesse Jed'.. I decided to leave what exists here in the interests of completeness. A beautiful 'Stella Blue' makes a first set appearance. 'Big Railroad Blues' and 'Cumberland Blues' are as rockin' as usual. The 'Casey Jones' that ends the set is quite nice as well. Bobby introduces Keith and Donna, (although Keith had been with the band since the Fall of '71), and explains that Pigpen is home ill :(    Grateful Dead Sacramento Memorial Auditorium Sacramento, CA 8/12/72 - Saturday     One     The Promised Land [2:54] ; Sugaree [7:16] ; Me And My Uncle [2:57] ; Bird Song [10:25] ; Black Throated Wind [6:31] ; Deal [5:14] ; El Paso [2:51#] ; Tennessee Jed [#2:33] ; Playing In The Band [12:30] ; Big Railroad Blues [4:05] ; Cumberland Blues [6:42] ; Stella Blue [7:26] ; Jack Straw [#3:38] ; Casey Jones [6:26]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081420.mp3   Thank you so much for your kind support of the Deadpod..   "A broken angel sings.... from a guitar"..

A energized show from 49 years ago highlights this week's Deadpod, from Winterland on May 30, 1971. We only have a partial second set from this Sunday night show but its in fine quality and the band is in top form for this period. The recording starts with a partial 'I Know You Rider' and you immediately wish the entire show survived. A fine 'Sugar Magnolia' follows,  and then 'Cumberland Blues' rocks out. Pigpen makes himself known with a powerful 'Big Boss Man'. 'Me & My Uncle' and 'Deal' follow, displaying the usual energy they were played during this time. 'Truckin' brings a big response from the crowd, but it leads into the highlight of the evening, a 15 minute plus 'Turn On Your Lovelight' that is pure Pigpen at his peak. 'Uncle John's Band' follows and then 'Casey Jones' closes out the set. A very energetic 'Johnny B Goode' ends the evening at must be well past the 2:00 AM curfew that Bill Graham warns us about following 'Lovelight'.    This was released on a limited edition vinyl record store day release in November 2012. However this comes from the Charlie Miller tapes.    Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 5/30/71 - Sunday Two     (MISSING) China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Sugar Magnolia ; Cumberland Blues ; Me And My Uncle ; Deal ; Truckin' > Turn On Your Love Light ; Uncle John's Band ; Casey Jones Encore     Johnny B. Might you need some energy after some time cooped up with 'social distancing'? Well I think this show will have you covered.. true primal Dead here.. the frantic scorching solos from Garcia on most of these might not be everyone's cup of tea, but this is a great presentation of where the band came from and what the sound was like back in 1967. This was the third time they had played Winterland and the day after their first album had been released. The Pigpen tunes here are real gems. He sounds on top of his game. Chuck Berry was also on this bill, and played between the 1st and 2nd Dead sets.  The second set in particular is fascinating. Check out the great electric versions of 'Cream Puff War' and 'Viola Lee Blues' they practically blow the roof off the place !   There are some understandable flaws in this recording and a couple cuts.. still I hope it brings a smile and gives you a respite from our dystopian present.   Grateful Dead Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA 3/18/67 Set 1 1.  Me And My Uncle 2.  Next Time You See Me 3.  He Was A Friend Of Mine 4.  Smokestack Lightnin' 5.  Morning Dew 6.  It Hurts Me Too 7.  Beat It On Down The Line 8.  Banter 9.  Dancin' In The Streets Set 2 1. Boy is this one going to eat up my quota! There is almost 2 1/2 hours of smokin' Grateful Dead music in this week's Deadpod, from the second set on 2/23/74 at the Winterland in San Francisco CA. I'm bound to overlook something that you will enjoy in this set, nevertheless I'd call you attention to the wonderful opening set (Row Jimmy through Stella Blue).. as well as the HUGE segment from He's Gone through Eyes of the World.. that 'Other One' is fantastic, including a 'Slipknot' sounding segment.. this recording is excellent for listening to the individual contributions, especially Phil the bombardier here!   I would have loved to have been there... can't imagine how everyone felt going out of there after this night of music!       Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 2/23/74 - Saturday Two     Row Jimmy [8:34] ; Weather Report Suite Prelude [1:16]> Weather Report Suite Part 1 [4:15]> Let It Grow [12:21]> Stella Blue [8:13] ; Big River [4:36] ; Ramble On Rose [6:45] ; Me And My Uncle [2:41] ; He's Gone [13:45]> Truckin' [7:55]> Drums [3:24]> The Other One [20:41] (1)> Eyes Of The World> One More Saturday Night ; Casey Jones Encore     Johnny B. This week's Deadpod celebrates the season with a show from December 23, 1970 at the Winterland in San Francisco CA. I have three different sources for this show, each of them slightly different - I decided to put two of them together. I'm sure the order is probably not right, but the recordings each sound quite nice and I'm hoping that you'll enjoy them this week, as we celebrate the holidays and the fact that soon the days will start to grow lighter each day.    Here's the combined setlists:  Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 12/23/70 - Wednesday first tape: Hard To Handle Candyman Me & My Uncle Cold Rain and Snow Second tape: Deep Elem Blues ; Beat It On Down The Line ; I’m A King Bee ; Me And My Uncle ; Cumberland Blues Me & Bobby McGee Dire Wolf Good Lovin' Casey Jones> Uncle John's Band                   Benefit for the Montessori School and Bear    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122019.mp3      (Sorry about the duplicated Uncle - didn't feel like trying to chop up the sets..)   I hope you enjoy this fine serving of classic Dead, and hopefully enjoy some relaxing times with friends and family.    thank you all for your support. Here's a show that I attended and found to be quite magical at the time.. it is from December 1st, 1979 at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh PA. A beautiful, small venue, the energy on this night was unmatched and I'm sure it comes through on this nice recording. The show starts with a smoking 'Jack Straw', which Jerry then takes into a long and beautiful 'Sugaree'. After this we know we're in for an evening of great jamming, and the boys don't let us down. 'Uncle>Big River', is even full of life, and 'Loser' always a favorite of mine, is perfect. Brent, still new on keyboards, sings a nice 'Easy to Love You'. Bobby's slide work in the 'Minglewood' that follows, could be better but a great 'Althea' saves the day and the band ends this first set with a wonderful 'Music Never Stopped'.. We'll hear set 2 next week...   Grateful Dead Stanley Theatre Pittsburgh, PA 12/1/79 - Saturday One     Jack Straw [5:36] > Sugaree [16:52] ; Me And My Uncle [2:53] > Big River [6:18] ; Loser [7:21] ; Easy To Love You [3:43] ; New Minglewood Blues [7:21] ; Althea [11:33] ; The Music Never Stopped [8:44]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120619.mp3   Peace, health and happiness to all of you during this season.   thank you.
