This week's Deadpod starts out with a unique Scarlet>Fire that was released back on Dick's Picks 13 as a 'hidden track'. This one doesn't sound like your usual Scarlet>Fire, the jam is unlike any other and Brent plays, I think, a bigger role (as he does throughout this set). I happen to dig it, hope you do as well. The rest of the (long) pre-drums set contains a fine Samson, a quite long 'Terrapin' (albeit with a small audience patch), and again, an interesting and unique 'Playin' with a jam familiar from that in the 'Scarlet' that preceeded it. Post-drums has a nice 'Black Peter' and a very lively 'Good Lovin' to close the set.      Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY Two     Scarlet Begonias [17:45] > Fire On The Mountain [16:23] ; Samson And Delilah [6:49] ; Terrapin Station [11:#19] > Playing In The Band [16:50] > Drums [6:04] > Space [3:54] > Black Peter [9:#43] > Good Lovin' [7:14] Encore     U.S. Blues [5:12]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011720.mp3   Take care of each other, and thanks for your support!

Hey there, Dead Freaks! It's October and although I'm ready for cooler weather, I'm still into talking about September. Specifically, September 1990. We're looking back to that first run of shows at Madison Square Garden with Vince and Bruce joining the Grateful Dead on the keys. While this era is often maligned, there's great stuff to be heard. In fact, this run has spawned a Dick's Picks (#9) and a Road Trips release! We're combing through what's to bring you some great playing from the dawning of a new era. I completely failed to mention the merch in this episode (AGAIN) so I'll just add here, you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site. Happy New Year! Well close enough ;) that said I decided to bring out one of the band's famous NYE performances for this week's (and next week's) Deadpod. This is from 12/31/79 at the Oakland Auditorium Arena in Oakland CA. While many would argue that this was not the best show of this NYE run (after all 12/28/79 was released as Road Trips Vol 3 #1, and 12/26/79 was Dick's Picks #5) there is still something magical about these NYE performances. This week we will listen to set 1, then sets 2 and 3 next week. Set one starts off strong with a great Jack Straw (listen to what sounds like the reference to Clive Davis of Arista Records in the "We used to sing for silver.. line :) Jack Straw flows into a big Franklin's Tower, albeit Jerry blows more than one lyric here.. Other highlights in this first set include a very nice 'Looks like Rain' and a rockin' Promised Land which closes out set 1... Grateful Dead Oakland Auditorium Oakland, CA 12/31/79 - Monday Set One Jack Straw [6:05] > Franklin's Tower [16:53] ; Mama Tried [2:36] > Mexicali Blues [4:42] ; Tennessee Jed [8:40] ; Looks Like Rain [8:09] > Alabama Getaway [7:04] > The Promised Land [4:46] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122713.mp3 Thank you for listening to the Deadpod in 2013, and I look forward to the shows to come in 2014!
